The only good car buying experience I've ever had! We agreed on a great price via email, I sent over my license, and when I arrived, the car was gassed up, cleaned, and all the paperwork was ready to go. It was such a relief after dealing with sleazy dealerships that promise one price and then sneak in "transportation fees," "tariff fees," and other nonsense. There were no games at McGrath--no "let me talk to my manager" tricks. As a single mom, it's hard enough to juggle everything, and it's even harder when businesses try to take advantage of you--especially when you're buying a car for your son. Jeff Goldman and Lou Perruffel were absolutely wonderful--kind, patient, and genuinely helpful. Lou was on the phone with an older client when we arrived and showed such respect and patience--it really stood out. I was immediately at ease and could tell I was in good hands. Thank you, McGrath. McGrath has no intention of honoring warranties or packages purchased through them. They won't add the interior/exterior package that I purchased with my '22 Certified Preowned Outback Touring to my account. I purchased the 4 in 1 covering the wheels and tires, and they won't replace them even though they are rated as 65k and are worn out at 25k. They won't even do the work on the muffler that has a very obvious loud sound. I left my car with them for 3 days and all they did was an oil change and installed a new seat cover. However the receipt says that it was installed as "A one-time goodwill gesture." because the finance department won't add the interior/exterior to my account. It's not goodwill if you just pocketed the money. I am thoroughly disgusted with this disgraceful display of greed and negligence. read more

Worst dealer experience ever, not the premium service you pay for. Service advisor Cody has no communication skills, was unable to explain what was wrong with my car. They left muddy footprints and fingerprints in my interior and didn't wash my car. No respect. Pricing is opportunistic, $500 for a radiator hose. Great place to get your Subaru repaired. Comfortable lounge area (though I do miss the crunchy snacks they had a cpl years ago--coffee machine is nice). The techs keep you up-to-date and explain things in laymen's terms. Been going to them for past 10 yrs because of great service. One PitA is that I sometimes have to get work completed at another Subaru and wish they linked all their systems (company I work at could do that). Tech said I needed 60K check-up and I had to look through my printed records when i got home bc they didn't have in their records. I got brand new Subaru 2024 crosstrek sport here November 2023. It has 1900 miles, and the bottom is all eroded. I got in today, talked/argued with 5 people, got pushed back and forth between service and sales. 2 guys in the process commented "yeah it is REALLY rusted". But upper managements find different reasons to say no and try to convince me that it is normal. This is so frustrating. I was treated rudely and got yelled at, they are not on the custom's side. It's a 4 months old car, parks in my indoor garage and erodes like this. They try to convince me it's normal. I'm going to call Subaru to get the issue resolved. We have been taking our Outback here for service since we purchased it from them in 2018. Quality seems to have declined since the change in ownership of the dealership. On a recent visit where we spent $1k on service, we asked - twice - that they check the inflation of the spare tire as we are passing the car to our daughter. They confirmed they would both times. After we brough it home, the undisturbed dirt on top of the spare left me suspicious that they did not touch it. I pulled it out myself to check, and instead of the required 60 psi, it was just 15 psi. Makes me wonder what else they did not do. read more

I test drove the car and was ready to buy it but the sales person informed me that the Subaru Certification fee was another $1,595.00. The staff at McGrath Evanston Subaru were a pleasure to work with. Herbie was our salesperson and he made our car buying experience easy. He was attuned to what we wanted. We never felt pressured to buy right away and when we felt like it was time for us to purchase, he helped us get our car registered and set us up with our insurance. Evan, the sales manager, was amicable and popped in to check on us. David in Finance was personable, answered all our questions and walked us through the daunting task of understanding the financial paperwork. Weeks later we were invited to schedule a follow up consult with their Tech spokesperson Brendan. Brendan went over all the ins and outs of the car and helped us get familiar with our electronic settings so all car features offered were customized to our liking. I'm unsure if other dealerships do this with their clients but the extra level of care definitely steps it up a notch when it comes to providing quality customer service. Lastly, I would like to mention how Subaru lives up to its motto when they say they are "More than a car company." Their fuel efficient vehicles are built in Eco-friendly plants thus reducing their carbon footprint. In their 20 years, they have donated more than $190 million to humanitarian causes like Feeding America, Books for Kids and their Adopt-A-Pet program. Had a 9:30 appointment for what I was told was a 3 hour job. I relayed to the service manager I had to be at work so I had to bo out of there by 1am at the latest. At 1 am they didn't even start the work. The service manager, Adam, lied to me repeatedly, was very rude and I ended up leaving with no work being performed. The general manager was very nice and tried to rectify the situation, but I will never return to that dealership. I was personally insulted and treated very poorly by the service department. The dealership lied and tried to charge me for items not added to the vehicle included some brake lights safety items and windshield treatment said were on the car. Had to push the dealership to get these cost refunded. It also took almost 3 hours to meet with the financing folks to finalize the suv purchase. A couple of weeks ago I made an appointment to fix an A/C problem with my 2014 Subaru Forester. I was always happy with my service appointments prior to McGrath taking over this location. I decided to wait for the diagnosis in the waiting area. After a couple of hours the service adviser indicated that I needed a new condenser and compressor. My car only has 44,000 miles on it.... Ok... Then he pulls out this slip of scrap paper with a list of labor and part prices. Is that how they do service estimates here? No formal written estimate? Ok.... When I talked to the service advisor I ask if there was any wiggle room on their estimate. He said he would talk to his service manager.... I told him I would call him the next day so we could talk about price and I could make alternative ride arrangements with a friend and drop the car off later in the week. I went home and checked pricing for the repair as well as "Subaru" parts, and I found the 'estimate' to be $1000.00 higher than it should be. When I called and left a message for this guy the next day, he called and wasn't willing to negotiate price. I asked him to ask his service manager and to call me back. He never called back.....I would have met him halfway if he was just willing to be reasonable.... I didn't want to go anywhere else. I never want to be a Karen, so I tiptoe around these situations so I don't piss anyone off.... I guess you have to take it or leave it when it comes to the service prices. I was watching the older crowd in the service area thinking to myself that they are just lambs to the slaughter waiting for their little slip of paper..... too bad... Complete waste of my time going to this dealership. Their website shows their inventory for 10 Subaru Crosstreks, including 1 with the sport trim I was after. I inquired online about a Suburu Crosstrek with a specific colorway, and their internet sales manager replied to me about additional vehicles that had coming in for August. I replied to his e-mail and said, "I'm headed over to the dealership now to take a look in person and perhaps do a test drive. Do you have the 1 Crosstrek Sport on the lot listed on your site?" He replied, "Great, looking forward to seeing you." And followed up with an appointment e-mail for the same day 4:30PM". I replied again asking, "Is that a no on the Crosstrek Sport at the dealership?" and got no reply. I arrived to the dealership to find out not only did they not have the Crosstrek Sport at the dealership, they did not have any Crosstrek at the dealership that wasn't already sold and could be test driven. Why was an appointment made for me? To come in an have some coffee and chat it up? Mark Wodika gave me a half ass apology and said he just didn't read my e-mail. So he's just blindly replying see ya soon to his e-mails? It was a two sentence e-mail, he saw that I was coming in to the dealership, but somehow missed the fact that I was coming in to test drive a vehicle he knew they did not have on the lot, or ANY of that vehicle regardless of trim level? Why would I be coming into the dealership then? It honestly makes no sense. At best it's completley careless... but really just felt like he purposefully ignored my question about inventory to get me in the door. The only solution the manager could come up with was for me to test drive a 22' Crosstrek, which I don't understand how that is seen as a solution in any sense. I ubered to the dealership, wasted my time and money. At a minimum you would think the manager would atleast offer to cover an uber back for me after the trouble and carelessness of his internet sales manager... but of course that was never offered. I would not waste your time at this dealership, I know I won't. I'll find another Subaru dealership that actually cares to have your business... because the one thing that was evident from my experience is that they do not care at McGrath Evanston Subaru. read more

This is the worst service department I've dealt with, including third party shops. I had a check engine on so I dropped my car off there. Within 30min I get a text from the service tech (Jon Tan) and he tells me that I need a new transmission and it's going to cost $7900+. My Subaru is a 2014 with almost 120,000 miles on it. He tells me the transmission fluid is burnt to the point they won't swap it for fear that it would "shock the system" and fry the transmission right away. I ask what my options are, he tells me that's my only option. I told him I had a lifetime power train warranty that's supposed to be good at any Subaru dealership nations wide. He tells me they don't accept there (100% lie confirmed by his service manager). He tells me I have to go back to the dealership I purchased the vehicle from (another lie confirmed by his boss and another dealership). I said ok and drove my car (with absolutely no problems) 1.5 hrs north to Subaru city in Milwaukee, after paying the absurdly overpriced diagnostic fee of $160 (the highest diagnostic fee around, the dealership I took it too later was $90 diagnostic). When I arrive, their service techs ask me why I drove all the way up here from Chicago and told them what the other dealership said and they told me they're not allowed to refuse my warranty. After they spend almost 2 days inspecting my car, they tell me that the transmission isn't blown and that is was a valve body on the transmission that's $1,300 (not a new transmission for $7900+). They also covered it under my warranty so it cost me $100 of a deductible, not $7900+ with no alternatives. I asked them to change my transmission fluid and they did with no problem. I asked them if the transmission fluid was "really burnt", they said it was a little dark but "really burnt" or black. Tried calling them for a refund, which they agreed to initially, as long as I provided evidence, which I did. Dropped it off and then it took 3 weeks to get a manager on the phone to ask about my refund. He then denied my refund and told me "his tech gave me the best option for repair". Which is ridiculous because the other dealership said that in no way did I need a new transmission. They're probably okay at oil changes but I would never let them repair. read more

If only zero stars were an option. I purchased my car at the Evanston Subaru dealership in December 2017. Every service that I have needed, I would get serviced at this location. I have rarely had any problems with service even after they were taken over by McGrath. However, I deeply regret bringing my car in for service on Saturday January 25,2025. I came in for sensor replacement, which I was told when I initially made the appointment wouldn't last more than a few hours. I was fine with waiting since the technician told me I would have it by EOD. As a matter of fact, they were kind enough to shuttle me to my house since I left my credit card at home which they needed on file in order to provide me with a loaner. Later on in the day, I get a phone call stating that the service would take longer since it looks like they have found other problems with the car. I was fine with that information as long as I wasn't being charged for the loaner and also as long as I was given a reasonable time frame as to when I'd get my car back. Initially the service technician Matthew (who was actually courteous), said I would get the car back later in the week. That never happened. Each and every time, I would have to initiate contact and inquire about the status of my car. There would be a couple of instances where I wouldn't even get a response. Normally , I would be ok with this if I was told ahead of time an actual realistic time frame especially since allegedly there are so many problems with the car. However , each and every time, the technician made it seem like the car would be ready in a couple of days. Essentially kicking the can down the road. Multiple family members and friends have informed me that this is not normal to have a car in the shop for a month with such inadequate follow up. So I call the shop today (2/24) and asked to speak to a manager. A manager named Rick answered my call and erroneously claimed that the facility has been responsive and that it is not their responsibility to provide daily updates. (As a matter of fact, he was touting the fact that the last update was on 2/19/25) However , the facility has rarely provided ANY updates even though I was promised periodic updates. I would always have to reach out. If one is unable to provide periodic updates, one should not promise that. Although , the courteous thing to do would be to do so. Rick was basically defensive , lacked empathy and was a total gaslighter. He would not let me get a word in edgewise and absolutely refused to listen to my concerns. It has been a month since I have not had my car and all Rick said was "there have been cars here for longer than a month". I proceeded to tell him that I have been patiently waiting for a month and he had the gall to say "no you haven't". Long story short : please avoid this place due to lack of communication from the staff and total lack of empathy from the manager Rick. The other employees have been kind in all my interactions (although not responsive). However, I can't help but feel that that particular rot starts at the top with a manager like Rick. read more

I flew to Chicago from Washington, D.C. to purchase a Subaru Outback at McGrath Subaru in July of 2021. At that time I was told that McGrath provided the first oil change for my Outback. Since I lived in Virginia I was told that next time I came to Chicago with my Subaru to call for my free oil change. When I called McGrath in July of 2025 and told them that I was planning a trip to Chicago and wanted a chance to get my free oil change and perhaps trade in my Subaru for a new model, I was treated like I was a scammer. I was told that there was no way that anyone at McGrath could have promised me a free oil change. Further, I was told that at the time I purchased my Subaru in July of 2021 that it was not a McGrath dealership so the new owner could not possibly honor the offer to get a free oil change. I asked why my paperwork said McGrath Subaru but my question was ignored. I also asked to speak to the Sales Manager but was told that he refused to speak with me. I am still travelling to Chicago, but will certainly not consider dealing with McGrath for my new Subaru. I would caution anyone dealing with McGrath Subaru to not count on any promises made. And I was shocked that McGrath Subaru would treat a returning customer so rudely. What a disappointment! read more

I just wanted to write and say thank you to the Paddor family and to our salesperson Herbie (and Pepi) for my new car! I had my previous scion for almost 12 years and was so hesitant to part with him because of all the adventures I had with him. I cried like a baby and I'm sure the salespeople think I'm psycho but I love and will always love that car! I needed an AWD vehicle (good for snow) and all my friends recommended the Subaru (7 people close to me have them). I decided on the model I wanted and my dad was able to place an order and obtain one. I'm very happy with the car and I wanted to thank Evanston Subaru for making it happen. Our salesperson Herbie was helpful and even had my things packed in boxes (in the trunk of my new car) while we were signing the paperwork. He made super corny jokes but was pleasant to deal with. From the hidden damages to the car they didn't disclose on the inspection report, like a damaged windshield which is a safety issue, and refusing to do anything about it, to the whole buying process and lying about the warranty of the car and trying to sell me extended warranty, to the whole customer service experience and how rude their used car sales manager Brent is. I purchased a used car here in April. They seemed great to deal with. Well it has mechanical issues that I guess they covered up. Bad starter, bad battery, and bad brakes. No way they didn't know about the issues as they started becoming an issue right away. Because of their negligence, I got stranded 6 miles from home They didn't care. Don't care. Won't use them again. Recommend others stay away ETA: Omar did NOT reach out to me the next day. He did after prompting, but his response to the issues my car was having - that the car wouldn't start and then did - was "weird". I never told him it was just a battery issue bc how would I know if it was a battery issue when the car wouldn't start for 3 days and then did. The person responding to messages seems to be ready and willing to lie to customers. Why would anyone want to buy a car from someone who lies instead of fesses up to their mistakes? Look at most of the recent reviews. All 1 stars Now the owner is acting like the facts aren't the facts. The problems started 35 days after I bought the vehicle. I have driven approximately 10 miles total in less than 2 months (I purchased the vehicle less than 2 months ago, not 3 months as he claims) and "maintenance" isn't why the car has had issues from the start and they hid the issues. I am including screenshot so everyone can see he DOES NOT CARE about customers and is willing to blatantly lie even when the lies can be proven false by sales docs that show the sale happened on April 23 and it is now June 16. ETA 2: After nearly $1300 in repairs, the car is is still having issues. These aren't normal maintenance issues. These are problems with the car that weren't disclosed.
