One of my regular spots south of Portland for a cold one and a chat. The beer is good and the service is fine. Don't come in expecting great food. It's just solid pub food, usually executed pretty well. Cajun tots and a burger are right in their strike zone, but sandwiches are also good and they make a decent bowl of an African peanut stew, if you like that sort of thing. They usually have some food specials which are a pretty good option. There are a variety of beers to try and a lot of comfortable seating, including outdoors on the patio for the warmer months. It does get surprisingly busy here on week nights, as an after work hangout for folks who maybe just aren't quite ready to go home yet. We all need a place like that right? read more

If you think you're having a bad day, you should read the The Ballad of John Barleycorn by Robert Burns. [1] Sort of The Passion of the Christ, Scottish style. But I really can't conjure up much passion, bloodlust or deadly rage towards this particular McMenamins. It is hard to think of another chain that has more variety. These are not cookie cutter establishments. The pinnacle for me is Kennedy School. Absolutely love the place. And if I'm on my way to the Gorge, I'll usually work in a visit to Edgefield. John Barleycorn's is just a restaurant and bar with a nice patio. No movie theatre, golf course, spa, hotel or other special attractions that make some of the other McMenamins a true destination. This isn't a renovated historic building although this location has always reminded me of Dracula's castle. The stone work, vaulted ceilings and tapestry curtains make a nice setting. What mainly struck me on my most recent visit was that aside from the crowd pleasing Communication Breakdown burger, I've rarely had food I consider good at any McMens. So the fact of the matter is that I'll put up with the food and beer at some of their more interesting properties, but for the most part I'll take a pass here. Came for dinner with the family, ordered our drinks and waited 20 minutes for the waiter to come back with them. Went looking for assistance and the same lady that greeted my family earlier told me to sit at any clean table, before I had any chance to explain that my family was already seated she walked away, she literally gave me no chance at all to speak to her. When I come to any McMenamins I don't expect fast or even great service. I expect to get a decent meal at a little more than a fair price but you get the ambiance for the place. It was a hot day and our party of six decided to sit out on the patio since the building shaded the whole patio. Hot day means drinking iced tea so I ordered that and an American Dip with side salad. Woefully disappointed in the size of the sandwich, seems to have shrunk lately. However.... sitting outside on a 90+ degree day and not even being offered a refill on a iced tea? He came back and refilled the beers, he acknowledged me when I held up my glass but never ever came back. So, I think I will repay the favor by never ever coming back to John Barleycorns. read more

What was up with the cook here on 12/27/14? We ordered happy hour cajun tots ($2) & they were crunchier than Ruffles potato chips & lacked cajun flavor. Disappointing starter. We also ordered a Durham Ranch Elk burger ($13.50) & The Quantum Leap ($10.75) which both were overcooked. The elk burger came out well done even though McMenamins supposedly cooks their burgers medium rare. Also, an elk burger should not be topped with lettuce, tomato, & red onion. The Old Gold in NoPo serves a scrumptious elk burger so maybe the cooks at JB should take a lesson from them. The Quantum Leap had great flavor from the Hammerhead bbq sauce & the portion was large but the house-smoked pulled pork was very dry. The Bloody Mary's here are delicious but $6.75 for maybe a 12 oz glass is uncalled-for. Seriously, give me a pint glass with a little less ice & more Bloody Mary. I had that drank before the appetizer came & I've never drank Bloody Mary's that fast. We liked our server much better than our food but we didn't come here for our server. The food was just too overcooked & that was the key factor in this two star review. I think everything would've tasted great if it weren't for that. read more

Came in for a light dinner February 4 2021 at about 7:46. My date and I were seated immediately around 7:50. Ordered our food by 7:55 but didn't receive our food untill 8:45. We've patiently watched other patrons who were seated after us get their food and drinks way before us repeatedly with refills while we weren't even asked for a refill yet. Mind you, all we ordered was stake bites and a salad. Bu any means not a meal that requires alot of time. Worst service EVER!! read more

I like this location. Odd Aztek-like statues and decor...stone work...in a really cool building but odd location in Tigard right off the freeway. There isn't much to say about a McMenamins establishment...you've seen one, you've seen them all so to speak. A bit smaller venue in comparison to some. Tried out their Delta Double IPA...was almost a bit too hoppy which is weird for me to say. Still a decent beer none the less. They also sell Purple Haze here which is a fave. My standard half-turkey sandwich with soup is always a pleaser. Note to self: get without cheese next time. It takes away from the delish smokey turkey flavor and cranberry sauce. Their Chili...so good. Like wasn't expecting it to be good...but damn. The servers are all friendly here but when there's a lunch rush it's hard to grab their attention. I have a love hate relationship with McMenamins. As a vegan, there usually isn't much variety with food. I came here with a couple of friends for snacks. I was pleasantly surprised that there was asparagus with basalmic and lemon zest and baked chickpeas. Both very delicious! Waitress was very nice and accomodating! read more

It was just ok. The beer during happy hour was cheap, and there are two happy hours daily with a break during dinner hours and restarting at 10:00 pm. We got there about 9pm, but eventually hit the happy priced drinks. Good beer, and during HH, pretty cheap. The food sucked. My friend had chicken tenders, she ate one, looked reflectively at it, and said, "Hmmm, it tastes kind of like shrimp." That's not good. I had the Captain Neon burger, bacon and blue cheese. There were two very tiny itsy bitsy pieces of charred bacon, and a watery sort of blue cheese sauce that tasted more like sour cream. The french fries were limp and cold. The guys had cheeseburgers, but they'll eat anything so they had no complaints. The service wasn't exactly friendly, but all the important categories of taking the order, serving the order, and asking how it was, were met. I wouldn't go back for food. I would only get beer during happy hour. It sure isn't worth driving for 1/2 hour from the 'burbs to eat or drink there. read more

When: July 5, 2015, Party of 4 Adults - 6:00 pm Yes, its another establishment of the McMenamins Brewery empire of restaurants, pubs etc...so pretty much, you know what to expect with few surprises. The lineup of standard and seasonal McMenamins beers are offered on tap, with the standard fare of food offerings. The inside of this establishment is rather dark & drury and if it weren't for the 90 degree temperature on the outside, we probably would have opted for the patio seating. Service was prompt and friendly. Food ordered on this occasion was the Fish & Chips, with Tots instead of fries, Mac & Cheese and the Cedar Plank Roasted Wild Salmon. All were done as requested and tasted fine, without any complaints from any party. With this Tigard location, easy on/off access to the I-5 is fast and convienient. Located in a Business Park area, majority of the patrons, I would assume, is from the surrounding businesses, during the work week. On this Sunday evening, it was pretty much a steady flow of regulars and visitors. read more

This is my Friday night hangout. My sister and I have clam chowder dates every friday. Their ever revolving specials menu keeps things interesting and new. Definitely helps avoid getting tired of the same old thing. And the atmosphere is so relaxed. I've never felt rushed when I visit and it's always packed with fellow pub goers. Ordered takeout from here and was very disappointed in the full dinner size salad. The burgers are good, you've got to be pretty bad to mess up a burger though. Don't order salads here and pay the nearly $7 for meat added (ie steak) - they will only give you 3 small pieces in a small bowl of lettuce that already cost $13 on its own! The manager informed me that they've reduced portions but of course prices aren't reduced, they are the same. He didn't offer a fair customer service solution when I told him that it was not sufficient for the price paid. Seriously the lousiest $20 salad I've ever had. read more

I came in late and from out of town. Luke at the bar took great care of me getting me feed. I came in for a drink because called and knew they were closing. I asked about places to order food back to my hotel. Their kitchen staff stepped up and made me dinner. I asked for it to go, but they brought it on a dinner plate and said enjoy and take my time. I can't recall her name but she was having a bad day cause she somehow got a splinter in her finger and during our time there had to get it removed. I laughed when she said, I had a small tree removed from my finger but I'm fine and had a really great attitude and personality. I recently moved across town and I will definitely miss John Barleycorns. It's part castle, part old church. There are plenty of nooks to sit in, away from others or if you prefer there's an outdoor area. I especially like their menu (I know McMenamins are different but slightly the same usually). Their menu includes steak bites with a blue cheese dip which I love. It's a nice little restaurant with a bunch of character. read more

Were given no menus, then in the next 10 mins we watched servers clean off dirty tables without acknowledging us once. I've eaten here twice in the last three days. Tuesday night the service was great! The food prompt and hot. I had the Elk (burger) and truffle fries. There was some confusion amongst the employees as to whether it was still available as I arrived late in the evening. Ultimately it was served and it was excellent. Tonight I visited again and sat by the bar. Big mistake. The bartender was buried and my food took over 20 minutes to come out. I had to ask a lady, who may have been the manager, to check on my food. She promptly brought it out leading me to believe it had sat in the window for a while. This was confirmed with almost warm truffle fries and a lukewarm Elk burger. To his credit, the bartender came to check on the food and brought out hot fries to replace the soggy almost warm ones on my plate. My beer was empty so I ordered a second at that time. Oatmeal stout which was excellent. I had to go to the bar to request my checks. Not a great experience, but at least the Tuesday night visit was good. read more

While I really do like the McMenamin's restaurant chain, this particular one has seen better days. The service is absolutely atrocious and unreliable even if you are asking somebody to find your server. This is not a review based on four somewhat consecutive bad experiences. One of the experiences was so bad the manager wrote off the entire meal in part because we couldn't find anybody to let us pay. They did not seem busy it was not because they were understaffed it's just seemed like the servers just did not care. Perhaps in future they will have staff that is interested in selling to people. I don't know. Eventually we will go back but not soon. read more

I enjoyed my first visit to this particular McMenamins. At first I was a little put off by being seated but no menus or beer menu handed to us, nor asked if we want one, so I grabbed a couple paper ones that were near where we were seated. Turns out they burn these after a person touches them. Wasteful. No cases of Covid have been traced to using a paper menu as far as I have heard/read. Despite that rather sad beginning, my mom and I had a very nice time, people were seated good distances apart, and the service was pleasant and timely. I would have loved to sit outside, it looked lovely! But my mom would have been cold. read more

First time visiting a McMenamins and have heard many good things about a lot of the locations, mainly being the buildings and revamps of the old style places. This was a great location and the building was very cool, however, that's pretty much where it ends for the good reviews. Service was attentive and polite and wasn't delayed in any way but a little forgetful about certain items. Had a chipped glass with a pretty sharp edge and could have easily sliced my mouth but saw it before drinking out of it. The food was pretty much the lowest reason for the low ranking, tater tots had an overkill of the cajun spice dumped on them and weren't anything to write home about, had a burger that came out lukewarm and almost cold. The beef patty looked like a packaged beef burger from Costco so it wasn't good at all. I've worked in the beer industry and have traveled around the world trying new and different beers and these were nothing special either. All in all the building was the main reason this is two stars and not a single, place looked great even if it was so dark I could barely read the menu. If I were to title this, I would title it "Undoing A Decade Of Disappointment." Because that's what our visit to John Barleycorns did tonight. For the past decade plus, we lived near the McMenamins in Mill Creek, Washington. Common themes were disinterested support staff, average-at-best food, and excessively long waits for, well, everything we hoped to have a change moving to Oregon. Next up was a McMenamins about a mile from the house in a strip mall near Whole Foods. Everything from Mill Creek was amplified. This was my last hope. We'll get to the food in a sec, but the positive experience starts and ends with our server, Lexie. Exceptionally attentive, genuinely friendly, and helpful in all regards. We felt like the team was genuinely glad to have us there. Now to the food - we opted for the weekly special menu, and found everything to be fresh and prepared as well as we could've wanted. The fellow that brought out the dishes was every bit as friendly as Lexie was toward us. We started with the tots - every meal should start with tots, especially theirs. So yeah, we'll definitely be back. The food met the high bar that the service set. After enough misses with other McMenamins, this one is a hit! read more

Great happy hour deals from 3-6 and 10-close: pints and wells for $3, burgers for $4, and fries for $1! (Lots of other options too.) Standard pub atmosphere with a wood stove to keep things warm. They have a nice patio area with heat lamps that's a lot of fun. However, the unexpected 3 inches of snow shut it down today. OMG I love McMenamins. I moved away from Portland 3 years ago much to my chagrin. I am ecstatic that I am moving back this month! In preparation i brought a load of my stuff in a UHaul to PDX in mid Nov and made a point of finding a McMenamins near to my storage unit. After a 11 hour drive and 2 hours of unloading into the storage unit I was ready to cry as my *blank old out of shape body was screaming. I found Barleycorns via Yelp and staggered up to the bar during a crowded time. I was served a truly decent old fashioned and had a burger and was soooooo happy. Called in an order on a Friday around 11:30. Ordered tots, got fries. Paid $15.50 for a philly cheese steak. It was o.k.ish. The sauce on top was mayonnaise based and not emulsified properly, so I could still see chunks of white mayo. Mcmenamins used to be a blue collar joint with blue collar prices. Hipsters have ruined that. I was looking for a decent sandwich at a decent price and got a sub-par sandwich at a premium price. I've had $12 phillys that would knock your socks off. I'll start with the positive: Ruby beer is the best beer ever made. This and the Terminator Stout keep McMenamins in business--Like, the only thing. The negative: I feel like McMenamins puts on their job postings, "Will only hire surly, grumpy and unhappy employees. If you are qualified, please apply-but don't smile. We won't hire you." This pub is great, its within walking distance to my house and close to where I work, the only problem is that when my dad and I ate there they double charged his credit card because they were trying to start a tab and kept doing a new charge rather than appending the new item. Anyways it got resolved after he called them up. They've got good beers and tater tots. Don't let the tater tots touch paper because then you'll get some idea of how much grease you're ingesting. I let my tots sit for a minute on some napkins to cool down and allow the grease to soak out a bit. I was also dipping them in pepper-corn ranch dressing, so its a wash anyways... The place has a nice big stove to situate yourself near for dinner or a pint. The waiters and waitresses are extremely helpful and accommodating. read more

So I admit, the homogenizing of the McMenamins menu is kind of a bummer. I remember when each store had their own menu and specials. BUT the patio here is too cool for school on a warm day when traffic on I-5 South is bumper to bumper. HOPPY HOUR is 3-6: So here was my excellent plan that came off without a hitch. Take my car to Leif's (now doing oil changes and maintenance) for a 3:00pm (get it?) $ 10 oil change, get an estimate on a paint job, and have a beer and burger at Barleycorns while I wait. Other than the Cajun tots being a little TOO spicy...burger was perfect, beer was cold, service Ok...and beats the hell out of waiting in the lobby at Leifs. Two pints of IPA @ $ 3.25 ea, cheese burger@ $5, LARGE Cajun Tots @ 2.50= $ 14 plus tip. Good deal. They say they have live music on first Sunday of the month. Not a huge fan of most McMenamin locations. Beer is average. Service usually average. Food usually a bit above average. Stopped in with a buddy for a beer and tater tots last night. Had great service at the bar. Again, the beers were average (compared to what else is out there for in the Micro Brew world). Tater tots were....well, it's tough to mess up tater tots. We tried this place on a Saturday afternoon around 3pm. Turned out it was happy hour - pleasant surprise. We ordered a heiferswizen, a cucumber margarita, pretzel stick and cheese fondue, elk burger, and wings. Here are our review: Heiferwizen: I really liked it. It has a higher IBU than the typical wheat beer you will encounter. But that's how I like them. Margarita: it tasted really good. Portion size a bit small for a cocktail. Pretzel stick and cheese fondue: probably my favorite food item. The pretzel sticks were freshly baked and piping hot. Elk burger: the burger was good. But the fries were terrible, lumps of it stick together. Half of it was over fried and turned dark, the other half under and soaked up so much grease. Wings: pretty typical buffalo sauce. The wings are really really small. There were barely any meat stuck to the bones. It was a little over fried, probably because they were so small. read more
