I hadn't been to a Mellow Mushroom in forever - I went tonight, and it's still just as good as I remember. Groovy ambience, attentive wait staff, and quick service. We got a Kosmic Karma pizza and a peanut butter cookie for dessert - and the cookie is a decent size, I split it with my boyfriend! Made with Reese's Cups and warmed up just slightly. The pizza was phenomenal, my favorite part being the crust. It's probably their most well known pizza. To top everything off, a man I assume is the manager came out to our table and asked how our meal was going. I saw him go to another table after us, and I saw him visit another table right before we left. I've been to a few locations, this was my first at this location. I enjoy their laid back atmosphere and their pizzas are great! Came in on a Sunday for late dinner, we were on a time crunch. Group of 5. It was slow, a few tables and lots of employees. Micah was our waiter. I signed up for their rewards that morning so when he came by I asked for an order of pretzel bites. I mentioned I signed up online, showed him my email code. He took our order and left. We saw a few staff bring out the same appetizer but placed at other tables. A few min later a personal pizza came out. The manager Kristin brought the pizza to our table and noticed the other 4 in the group didn't have our food. We flagged down our waiter and asked about our pretzel bites, he said he didn't realize I wanted an order- he went and added it. 2 of us ordered salads, 1 person ordered wings and we had a kids plate- all missing! A different waitress walked by and we asked to speak to a manager. The manager never came. Our missing salads, wings and kids plate finally came. Our appetizer never showed up. The food is good - when you finally get it. Every time we order from this place the difference between the pick up time and the actual time seems to be at least 20-30 minutes. Went here for lunch this weekend and (as always) was not disappointed. The atmosphere here is always fun. It's consumed by color with so many cool things to look at. We were seated immediately (no wait time- even on the weekend). The staff is amazing. They go out of their way to be attentive, making sure everything is perfect. Now ... on to the food! Started out with some "munchies". First up was the Meatball Trio and the Cheesy Garlic Bread. "Heaven" is an understatement when describing the meatballs. The Cheesy Garlic Bread is something that's technically not on the menu anymore, but it's still available and equally delicious. Finally, we ordered a half-and-half pizza. The new Mellow Mushroom is a cool space that doesn't really resemble any other MM location that I've visited. The feel here is definitely upscale, but still holds on to the MM funkiness with the paintings that they have hung on the walls and the ceiling. The bar area is fairly large with plenty of seating at the bar itself as well as bar tables. The patio is also large and can accommodate many tables as well. The food is good...a creative selection of pizzas, calzones, hoagies, salads, and appetizers. The service was very attentive (from multiple employees) and our server (Sara) took care of our every need. The beer selection is vast, with a wide variety of drafts, bottles, and cans. We decided to have both the garlic butter w/ Parmesan as well as the cinnamon sugar w/ honey pretzels as an appetizer. The cinnamon sugar ones were absolutely scrumptious but a tad bit tough. I've been to this brand new location twice now - once for carry out, and once for dine in. So here goes 2 reviews for the price of one! The Carry Out Experience Let's face it, pizza is always a good decision for dinner (or breakfast.) Sometimes you want to eat at home though. Since the Mush doesn't deliver, then you have to go pick it up. When you get there, walk past the reception area and the bar to the dining area where you can see the cooks. There's another counter there with two cashiers. They're all setup for taking care of your order, or just picking up. I went on a TH night, and the place was slammed! But I only had to wait 2-3 minutes to pick up my pie. Success! The Dine-In Experience My wife and I went for a nice lunch this week. We sat outside to take advantage of the beautiful weather. I'm hard pressed to name another establishment in Cary that has a better outside dining experience. For one thing, it's a huge space. Secondly it's got both opened and covered spaces. We'll have to see what happens when the weather turns colder, but I"m assuming they'll have those huge standing torch space heater thingies. We had no wait and our choice of tables. If you don't want a long wait - don't go for dinner! Same story at the Raleigh location for that matter. Our food and drinks we're ordered and delivered w/o incident. I asked for jalepenos to be added to my BLT sub, and there they were! My waitress even asked to see if they had gotten enough on there. Excellent! On our way out, my waitress ran up to me with my to-go box - I had left it on the table! So I have to save 5 stars for service. The other reviewers have been pretty harsh, and I think that's to be expected. Go at rush-hour times to a brand new restaurant with a brand new staff - you're going to have issues. I have no doubt all of this will be taken care of shortly. If you have a problem, the owners and managers have their business cards at the main entrance - give 'em a call! My initial impression is that they aren't prepared to deal with the volume of business they're getting at this location. They are swamped day and night, with a full parking lot and long waits for tables. The first few times we tried to get take out, they weren't even answering their phone. After 30 minutes we gave up and got Papa John's instead. Last Sunday we were finally able to get through and ordered the bacon chicken BBQ pizza and some cheese bread. It took about a half hour from the time the call was placed to when the pizza/bread was ready, so it's a bit longer wait than your typical pizza place. The chicken bacon BBQ pizza had all the main ingredients gathered toward the middle of the pizza, with a swirl of BBQ sauce on the top. The toppings were actually really good, I just wish they weren't all centered in the middle. Also, there was no sauce on the pizza, just the swirl of BBQ. So once you get to the outer 4 inches of the pizza, it gets pretty dry and bland. My son loves Papa John's cheese sticks, but he was not a fan of the cheese bread here. The french bread was a bit stale, and they put the sauce container directly on the cheese topping, leaving a little circle indent on the top. I don't know of any other restaurant I've ever been to that puts containers or dishes on top of the food like that. My husband is a huge fan of other Mellow Mushrooms and he keeps insisting that this was not indicative of their typical service and food. I do plan on giving them another chance, this time ordering a calzone which he says is much better than the pizza. So when I get there 15 minutes later than I was told the order was not ready. I waited about 15 minutes after I was our old it would be 5 more minutes and still not ready. Almost thirty minutes after I get here and it's still not ready. Wtf? I really wish I had known it would be another hour and I wouldn't have left a tip. It was an ok pizza place. I did like that you were able to order local beer. I always love the choice to try something local. I went with an ale and I really enjoyed it. We ordered the meatballs and I liked that there was melted cheese in the middle. We ordered two types of pizza. One of a blue cheese base with sausage and chicken. Another was a white based pizza with feta cheese, spinach, tomatoes, and a couple other ingredients. They were both good but just ok. Nothing out of the ordinary. Apologies in advance for the long post. My family and I have been to this MM multiple times over the years and have always had a good, if not great experience. However, tonight was a big disappointment, although the manager made things right in the end. It started with getting seated. We followed the host to be seated and upon seeing an available booth, I asked if we could sit there instead of a 4 top table. He responded by saying he didn't think that was possible. When I asked why not, he said, "Because it hasn't been cleaned yet." There were no dishes or glasses on the table. It just needed to be wiped down as there were the typical crumbs and smudges. I then said that I didn't mind waiting a few minutes for someone to clean it. He then gave me a confrontational look and said, "I don't think that's going to happen." We had been standing now by some table for what seemed like 3-4 minutes. I then said, "We can just sit in the booth and wait for them to wipe it down; we don't mind." He then said that he couldn't allow us to do that "due to some health safety regulations." This guy must have thought I was born yesterday and had never gone out to eat before or had to wait a minute for a table to be cleaned. I was about to make a scene, but I controlled myself, and just said we'll sit at the table he brought us to, as this ridiculousness had gone on long enough. Then, we ordered our drinks. My son ordered a coke. Our server, Chris, came back and apologized that their fountain machine was low on coke syrup, and would he like a different drink. My son ordered a sweet tea. We also then ordered our food. My son ordered a small plain cheese pizza and pretzel bites with marinara sauce. I ordered the medium Buffalo chicken pizza. My son's tea came, but it was unsweetened. We told Chris, and he apologized but the tea was having problems too. Thankfully, there was nothing wrong with my Blue Moon beer. My son then ordered a root beer...that was good. About 30 minutes later, his cheese pizza arrived. It was mushy, and the crust wasn't the usual great crust...it was too thick and doughy. We told Chris he didn't care for it, and he took it off the bill. Another 15-20 minutes went by, and I still hadn't received my Buffalo chicken pizza. Chris had been apologizing for the delay, as he obviously knew the kitchen was having issues, and I wasn't annoyed with him. But because of our experience with the host when we arrived, and now the issues with the drinks, food, and the excessive delay, I told Chris I wanted to speak with the manager. When he came to our table, I explained the issues. He was very apologetic and professional. He even offered to comp our meal except for the beers, as he was aware of the challenges they were having. I thanked him for that but told him I wasn't looking for a free meal, but that I just wanted him to know what was going on, including the very strange seating experience. He insisted on comping the food, which I greatly appreciated, and I gave Chris a good tip, as these issues weren't his fault. We will go back, as the manager did the right thing. Hopefully they'll get their issues worked out. Part of the reason for telling this long story is that most people, including myself, don't want to complain. But sometimes you need to in order to make things right. Most managers (the good ones) would rather have a chance to make things right than to have an unhappy customer boycott their restaurant. read more

I've been to this location and the one in Wake Forest, and honestly, it's better than the 'fast food of pizza' places but it's nothing to knock your mom over to get too. In general it also seems a bit expensive when you're done, and their crust is more on the soft side for my taste. I have been a Mellow Mushroom customer for a long time. I ordered my pizza online and went to pick it up curbside. When I arrived, I was told my pizza came out "wonky" and they were making a small pizza to fix the issue. I confirmed on the phone what toppings were on the pizza. When I received the pizza, my original large pizza that I ordered was not right and the small replacement pizza was missing toppings. I have ordered this exact pizza from other locations with no issues but was told that it was a "ordering system problem" why my pizza was not right. The manager that came out to speak to me was also very rude. No offer to fix my issue, just that I was wrong and they were right and next time I should call to order. And not only were the pizzas not what I ordered, but I have never received a pizza from Mellow that looked and tasted as bad as this one. It was super thin, barely had any crust and no parmesan. The picture is missing some pieces because I had to reheat the pizza before eating. The pizza I received is not the pizza I know from Mellow mushroom. Our server was nice, but we did have to wave him down a few times. MM definitely has some quirky decor. They seem to have several areas of seating at this location: family-oriented cushy booths, a bar, a semi-outside area where they can slide the windows open, and patio seating under the umbrellas. We chose to sit in the semi-outside area at some really cheap tables. Once they opened the windows, our napkins and straw wrappers were flying everywhere. I wonder if they could try cloth napkins or have the servers take our trash every once in a while? I swear my pizza didn't taste as good as the last one I had at the Durham location. We went to Mellow Mushroom in Cary last night and it was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. We waited nearly an hour to be seated and then ordered. To be fair they were quite busy with Holiday diners but it became obvious that the kitchen staff not only didn't care but were visibly ignoring the multiple orders that they clearly had. We watched as one employee tossed the same piece of dough for over an hour while the other kitchen staff just sat around apparently just watching the customers wait endlessly for their food. We waited over an hour for our pizza and the waitress finally came over and informed us that the kitchen staff were very backed up. We asked if our pizzas had even been put in the oven and she said, "probably not." Unfortunately there were no managers to speak with unlike other times when we have dined at this location). There seemed to be no one supervising anyone and certainly not the possibly drugged out kitchen staff. I love heading to Mellow Mushroom for some pizza. Not cheap on pizza or drinks, but I'd say worth the money. I have tried the Philosopher's pie, the White Rabbit and one other--the white rabbit is a speciality but was my favorite. The staff is good enough but we usually have to wait so this past weekend we sat at the pizza bar--which is first come first serve. It was a busy night and there was DRAMA in the kitchen! It was like watching hells kitchen. Could be an awkward place to sit and it's not always the best service--the people next to us were forgotten about or their ticket was misplaced and were still waiting for their pizza when we left--after 45minutes or more. The restaurant is quite large with lots of seating. I was a bit surprised because for some reason I was expecting a tiny place with only a few tables. There is enough room for large groups. The gluten free crust is great. I never would have known it was gluten free. I've had some flimsy GF crusts with finely chopped toppings, but this was substantial enough to support a lot of full size toppings. The Veg Out was nice, but the House Special was awesome because it had lots of meat on it. The others in my family had some of the gluten free pizza and never commented on a difference.
