First time tried Mellow Yellow. Food was okay. White pizza was very bland. Would not go back.

We were seated at lunchtime. Sat at our table with two young children. Nobody came to the table to offer drinks or otherwise provide any service. Left after 20 minutes of not being served. There's mellow and there's so apathetic you lose sales. read more

Mellow Mushroom is one of my family's favorite restaurants to go to. The pizzas have always been so delicious and we can't get enough of their pretzel bites with beer cheese for an appetizer. Since I've been transitioning to veganism, I was worried I wouldn't be able to have their pizzas anymore....HOWEVER I had tried their pizza with the Follow Your Heart vegan cheese and it was so. Flipping. Good. The only thing was that the waiter I had was not able to tell me if the dough was vegan or not. I wasn't too strict with it at the time but the pizza was still phenomenal. Over priced and under flavored. We stopped in at 11:30 and were seated right away. We got our drinks and the waitress said she would be right back to take our order and disappeared. About 15 minutes later she re-appeared and took our order and told us it takes longer for their pizza (she was right). We ordered the House pizza thin crust. The food is always good. I've been a fan of the chain for a long time and was excited to hear about the opening closer to me. I always get a calzone with vegan cheese and it's always bomb. Although the food is fantastic, the service is just...awkward. All of the wait-staff are very young with little experience. I asked if I could have a sharper knife to actually cut through my calzone but the girl told me the only have dull butter knifes??? I don't understand that. Ate here last weekend, since my son won a free pizza at school. One of our pizzas was over-cooked. In the sake of transparency, the burnt pizza was presented to us by a manager as an option along with the other ordered pizza, or we could wait for another one to be made. At that point, we were hungry, so we ate it anyway. I think the better play would've been to offer the burnt one at a discount or free, but we were charged the full amount. Ive been here a few times since it opened and can say they got their act together. There were long waits for pizza at the beginning, but now it is getting much better (still 30-45) which is ok in my opinion. Also great selection of brews on tap including local and national brands. Have tried different pizzas and wings and quality has been top notch. Price is up there, but in line with other Mellows around and worth it for consistent quality. Staff is friendly and knowledgable. Also getting better with time. To avoid long wait times they are now using "no wait" app so you can get your name on list ahead of time. read more

I have eaten here several times and had a wonderful experience each time. The managers are incredibly professional and accommodating. The decor is really cool and was all done by local artists. Really disappointing! Visited the new Mellow Mushroom and I expected much more. It has a cool vibe but the music volume kept getting so loud, you had trouble hearing people at your table. When we asked the waitress questions about items on the menus, she did not really know what they offered. I will give them a break because this is a new staff. But because this is a chain restaurant, I would have expected the kitchen staff to be able to cook their basics. I have had better pizza in a mall food court. The two orders of calzone at our table were under cooked and the dough inside was still raw. To make matters worse, they serve calzone on cold metal pizza pans and the butter knives they give you would not cut through the food. On a positive note a friendly new manager, Theresa came to our table and explained that they are working on the issues. Finally, one the people at our table ordered a bowl of mushroom soup to go, they got a half filled container (about a tea cup.) Until they get the food right, I would skip this one. read more

Great service and straight forward happy hour menu with good choices. The mushroom soup is loaded with flavor. The classic crust large pizza was just ok. I ordered garlic as a topping and only detected it in one bite. While they look delicious, None of their pizzas have much character in the taste profile. We waited over an hour for our food, the waitresses were not helpful, and they sat us in the corner...we all got our meals comped it was rough!! Tuesday night at 6pm shouldn't be this slow. I went to the "Mellow Mushroom" on Cary Street in Richmond, VA and absolutely LOVED the pizza. But the "Mellow Mushroom" on Huguenot Road was just okay. The pizza was okay. We order a 2-topping pizza and a vegan pizza. The vegan pizza tasted like someone used cream cheese on the pizza, but I guess that is the way "vegan cheese" must taste. Shocking disappointment. Went in for lunch on a Sunday. No wait which was great. That should have been the first sign. I am a wine drinker. Their house wine is something off of skid row. Cool. Most people drink beer with pizza. My dining companion ordered a vodka and cranberry mixed drink. PLEASE check out the pics. That's what he got. Vodka and cran. No ice. "Well you didn't say you wanted it on the rocks". Ok let it go. She brought plates and 2 used napkins (the previous patrons had doodled on them probably trying to keep their sanity). Let it go. When we looked at his drink like "what?" she actually looked at us like who would expect ice in their mixed drink? I was about to come unglued. Plus she was wearing a dirty looking beret that had lint in it. Our pizza came and we asked for a box. It was best I get out if there before letting loose on this girl. Paying was a nightmare. Just like another review, we also had a problem with the gluten-free option. We were with a large party of 12. We were seated in a relatively short time for as busy as they were, around 4:45. We had a couple of straglers so everyone was ready to order by 5:10. My girlfriend and I are gluten-free and vegan. The rest of the party didn't have any dietary restrictions. Since our diet is very restrictive and not everyone understands what is involved, we wrote down exactly what we wanted and confirmed with the waitress that she understood what we wanted. Since they only do small size gluten-free pizzas, we got 2 veg outs with vegan cheese and tofu. This was probably at about 5:20. They were busy and I know they don't start making the pizza until it is ordered so we were expecting about a 45 min wait. The pizzas started arriving at about 6:00, right on time I thought. Once all of the regular pizzas arrived, the waitress assured us our pizzas would be out soon. She advised us that the tofu was processed on the non gluten free side of the kitchen and there could possibly be a small chance of cross contamination. We said that was fine. My family tried to wait for us but we told them to go ahead and eat. We kept waiting. Still no pizza. Finally a manager came by to tell us there was a mix up with the ticket but the pizza was now in the oven. This is after the waitress had checked on our order several times. We kept waiting. The rest of my family finished eating. Still waiting. It is now closing in on 7:00. The manager comes by again, says it will be out soon and he removed it from our bill. By this point, we are starving. I don't usually complain but this was rediculous. Finally at about 7:05 the manager shows up with our pizza and it is totally wrong. It had pepperoni and Italian sausage on it and no tofu. It was all I could do to not yell at him. Sorry we are busy, blah blah blah is all we got. When I looked at the bill, it even said vegan option and right under it pepperoni and Italian sausage. We waited close to 2 hours and still didn't get to eat. Another manager came by to ask how everything was and I had to let it all out. I guess I was being a bit loud because he rushed us to the door. He gave me his card and said if we came back within the next month or so he would make it up to us. Probably won't happen. Given our diet we don't eat out too often so when we do, we want to go somewhere we can be sure the order will be right. We usually go to the Cary street Mellow mushroom because they are on top of things. This has left such a bad taste in my mouth we probably won't go back. Don't offer things on your menu that you can't deliver. I would give 0 stars if I could. read more

Not a fan of the new vegan cheese! Loved the calzones when they used Daiya cheese but the new brand/ the way they cook it is awful. The texture is like snot and it barely has any flavor. I'm really sad to review this so badly because the other locations (tech Center & Carytown) are absolutely awesome!! Our waiter was astonishingly rude. Asked what we wanted to drink and eat and didn't come back to check on us until we flagged him down. But wait, I flagged him down to ask for a new glass because mine had LIPSTICK STAINS on it... he says "oh yeah" grabs It from me, brings a new one out "sorry about that". Sees my friends drinks and fails to ask if they need refills. However the group of men beside us were visited constantly checking if they needed anything, if their meals were up to standards and If their drinks were in need of a Refill. So anyways, besides the terrible service we waited for our food for what seemed to be forever, probably seemed longer because we were running out of our drinks too! The food finally came out, the bun was cold, the presentation was very poor & the food overall was not very tasty. Finally, the manager had gone around checking on most of the tables but skipped right over us -- we were in an older crowd so I'm sure we looked too young to give an adequate response compared to the more seasoned. I really expected better from almost every aspect that this restaurant had to offer but it failed to meet even the minimal expectations set. Walked in to order take-out for a gluten-free pizza on a weeknight around 6p. I'd enjoyed a good GF pizza at the Cary location, so wanted to try this one since it's close to home. It wasn't that busy, but they said the wait was going to be 25 minutes. NP, sometimes GF crusts take longer. Waited at the bar and was pretty much ignored by the 2 employees who were doing barback stuff. Folks to the left and right of me (the only other people at the bar) were well attended...it appeared they were either regular customers, off-duty coworkers or friends of the bartenders. I was 3 feet from where the 2 people were working, so there's no way they couldn't see me. When they finally walked close enough for me not to shout, I asked one of them if I could get a glass of wine, and it was brought to me. When I finished, my glass sat empty as they continued to work and serve the other 2 customers. My pizza was brought out to me and I sat there, money in hand, for at least 5 minutes. Every time I geared up to say "excuse me", they walked just far enough away that I would have had to shout or interrupt their conversation with the other customers. I finally found my opening and paid for my wine. The pizza was good, but at over $17, it wasn't really worth it when you add in my experience at the bar. Blaze seems to have the same GF crust, you can get unlimited toppings for $12 and the wait is usually about the same. Sorry MM, but I won't be back unless I'm with a group. read more

I'd give them a 5 for customer service on take-out. I ordered three pizzas online from the Midlothian location. One large, one medium, and one small. The two larger ones were custom orders; the small one was a plain cheese. All of the pizzas were delicious, all items correct. I actually walked out with 4 pizzas, because the medium one, which was on a thin crust, had a hole in it. I would not have known that until I got home. They let me know when I picked up the pizza, and had made a small one exactly like the medium one to make up for the hole! Now I call that great customer service. I can't think of any other pizza place that would have done that. The "hole" only really affected one slice, so I got bonus pizza. Also, they have the best bacon for pizza that I've had anywhere - and I almost always get bacon. Their bacon has this great smoky flavor, more flavorful than other places - and big pieces of bacon to boot. I've eaten here in-house, and this was my first take-out from here. In-house is also great on service and pizza, and the only reason it isn't getting 5 stars across the board is for the lackluster salads. A little more attention to quality to those and they'd be 5 all the way. read more
