I wrote a review for the Mellow Mushroom on Cary St. back in March of 2014 and gave it 4 stars. Having moved to Midlothian I was tickled pink that I would now have a Mellow Mushroom on my side of town. YAY! Being the Yelp Elite snob that I am it's important to get this review right. I know the owner is reading these, hello David! Well first let me quote the website... "Mellow is a state of mind, a culture, a way of being. Our mission is to provide delicious food in a fun and creative environment. We are the originators of hand tossed, stone baked classic southern pizza. Our spring water crust is unique and flavorful, and all our pies are made with high quality, fresh ingredients. Our philosophy is to elevate the dining experience with a higher order of pizza. Mellow out..." So how was my experience? All of the above. The environment is clearly creative and has this hippy vibe. I'm a native to California. My parents *ARE* grass smoking hippies so I got a kick out of the vibe here. Is that crust unique? It sure is. I'm not exactly sure what spring water crust is, but I'm good with it. Many of us think it's whole wheat but I think it's the presence of molasses that makes it somewhat brown in color. This is what I said in my 2014 review so we'll stick with that. How about those fresh ingredients? They are spot on. My girlfriend has a strong preference for thin strips of onion with crumble sausage and thin cut green peppers. The toppings on this pizza could not have been more perfect. For me, this is probably the best gourmet style pizza in Midlothian. Did I mention the killer beer selection here? It's excellent. So, now comes the balance. These things you call "pretzel bites" are misleading. I'm not the only one who feels this way. Carly K. and Adina B. also feel the same way. Beer cheese made with PBR is disgusting. You give this away for free for a reason; it's crap. You can get free pretzel bites with a Yelp check-in or if you join the eClub. So let's just agree that the "pretzel bites" are not the flagship munchie of this fine establishment. You know what the flagship munchie is? The Spinach Artichoke Dip! Moving past that small criticism let's focus on the good which is literally everything else. Mellow Mushroom make a fantastic pizza with premium ingredients. They carry some of the best local RVA craft beer such as the Hardywood VIPA and Falcon Smash from Triple Crossing. The wait staff are super polite and have some hustle in their step. What's not to love? You'll be seeing much more of us. read more

We Ordered a thing crust pizza to pick up with just sausage and cheese. When we picked it up, the crust was burnt and there was not much sausage on the pizza at all. We asked to speak to the manager and Esteban kindly explained that the thin crust is more prone to burning and he agreed there were not enough toppings. He explained the portion size of sausage was correct if there were many toppings on the pizza, but with only one topping it was not enough. He offered to remake the pizza with the normal dough, and with the right amount of sausage. He offered us drinks and made sure the order was VIP. We had no wait to sit but definitely a wait for the food. In my opinion it was probably no fault of the kitchen and probably our servers fault. The appetizer and meal came at the same time and had most obviously been ready and just sitting. There was a film on the beer cheese with the pretzel bites. She was very good at hide & seek as we waited even longer after all of the food arrived, by a different server nonetheless, to get Parmesan. Not to mention apparently they don't have silverware so we had to go to the front desk to get plastic ware. Looks like everyone around us with her as a server had the same issue but every other table seemed to be getting top notch service. We dine at this spot all the time. I prefer it to the Carytown location, in that there's a lot more space and a ton of convenient parking. This space is great for entertaining - small parties are welcomed (even little ones) and the pizza is pretty consistently good. The customer service has been consistently pleasant, and if you come often enough the staff tends to remember you. I'd say about 60% of the time my order is done exactly right and to my liking. Most instances, if I speak up, the problem is rectified; but beware, on a busy pizza night (Friday, Saturday, Game days, for instance) it can be a big challenge to get things fixed. If you want delicious pizza, lots a toppings variety, and a cool, trendy atmosphere, go for it! No better local pizza on this side of town at all. read more

First time eating here and I absolutely love the whole wheat fresh baked pizza. We had the BBQ chicken pizza and the biggest steak and cheese calzone that I've ever seen! The restaurant is new and the decor is fun and interesting. It felt like you were eating somewhere really unique. There are several people that have complained about the wait... look it's a new restaurant if you don't want to wait come in a few months when it isn't so new. We came when the first opened and we were in and out in under an hour. When we left the wait was about 45 minutes. They are a new staff... new management team and they are working things out, give them a break... how good were you the first few weeks you started a new job? Garlic bread was not that good or properly cooked. Pizza was really bad so they put lot of veggie and did make pizza well done. So veggie and that made so soggy and not good taste. Also veggie was not backed well in oven. And all 4 people felt same. As per server it's new item and not in menu. So I say it was not well thought item from their side. Also order came too much late. This place is a funky little chain who's ambiance reminds me of the Experience Music Project in Seattle... don't know if that reference helps at all. But what really matters is the food, right? We ordered garlic cheesy bread and a 10" pie with sausage, meatballs, green olives and the roasted mushroom trio. I would have enjoyed more garlic on the bread, but this is Richmond after all, where they love their sugar but not so much their spice. Still, it was a good appetizer, with plenty of savory herbs. It was served with a tomato sauce that went well with the bread. The pizza was excellent - the crust was thin and chewy, but strong enough to hold everything on the pie. You could taste all the toppings, and I'm here to tell you that the roasted mushroom trio is a winner. The staff was outstanding. When we first walked in, the Mrs. wasn't exactly feeling all that chipper, with a slightly upset stomach. The staff went out of their way to make sure she was taken care of, and once we got some ginger ale in her stomach and a bit of food, she was feeling better. The staff still made sure she was OK, and bent over backwards to ensure she enjoyed her meal. One question I had - they have a wing special on on day, but they don't have wings on the menu. My mellow experience is usually top tier but today wasn't quite the same. First off I love there salads..I know I know it's a pizza place but they usually give you a good amount of salad and food for pretty much anything you order. A kids meal is the size of an adult meal. But, on this last visit ordered pretzel bites and they gave me such a small portion I was very confused how I paid $8 for maybe 10 little bites. This was the first Mellow Mushroom that reserved space for the boys and the management/host staff were so great so work with-very accommodating and helpful. The ambiance and decor was really cute, colorful and fun. The Hostess at lunchtime was great; she sat us at the "fancy" table and I thought that sweet of her. All wait staff we dealt with were so kind and eager to assist us; it's was extremely refreshing. Shawn, our server, was great, very personable and super laid back yet attentive. I ordered a "Lil" Greek salad and split a medium pizza with the Hubby, half "House" and the other "Great White". Salad was delicious and a nice portion; I couldn't finish it. The pizza was really good. Not the best in town(especially for the prices) but they can compete. Final word: The ambiance and specialty pizzas are enticing. Our first time at the Mellow Mushroom. We went to the Huguenot Rd Midlothian location. We had a lovely time. Our server was over the top professional, attentive, and friendly. Our food was delicious. We had the naked wings with a variety of sauces, a Greek salad, a Funky Q Chicken pizza and a build your own pizza. Our drinks were coke and a lavender lemonade!! Really enjoyed the atmosphere inside. Loved the decor. However the food wasn't great. It didn't have much flavor to it. Pizza, Stromboli, was lacking serious flavor. An a okay option but definitely not my first. We got takeout amid the COVID19 crisis and I wasn't super impressed by the service or my meal. Two others were waiting in the lobby for food and had not been acknowledged until I walked in and waiting an additional minute or two. I feel like you need to have someone working up front at all times regardless of the circumstances but especially in a time where social distancing is a requirement. I would come here again if I were a vegan because the vegan pizza was amazing. I'm not though so I won't be rushing back. I got the cheesesteak and I was pretty disappointed. The peppers weren't cooked at all which made for a weird crunch in what's supposed to be an ooey gooey sub. The lettuce was more like spinach or Roma and I prefer iceberg on a cheesesteak. The best pizza I have had in Virginia since I arrived 6 weeks ago and I have had pizza 5 times since then. I wis I could remember the name of the pizza I ordered but it had pesto sauce as the base and portobello mushrooms. I thought I died and landed in pizza heaven! The menu was creative and extensive. I liked the flavor of the dough which told me that they let it rest overnight. Most really good dough is rested like that. Yum! That crust was perfect with a nice bite that was both crunchy and soft. Oh my gatos, this place was really cool! The Service: I want to start out with the service because it was truly the best part of our experience. Sidney (I hope that's how she spells her name) was amazing! Not only was she hilarious but she was super personable and sweet. That girl made the entire experience wonderful and we will only come back if she's working, that's how awesome she was! Give that girl a raise y'all! The Food: My fiancé got the gluten free pizza and he said it was by far the best he's had. So that's impressive on its own. As far as my pizza, I got a 10 inch pepperoni and it was very good! My lil Caesar salad was also very good but the croutons were ehh. We also got a free pretzel bite appetizer for checking in so that was dope! Make sure you check in fellow yelpers - it was pretty good! The Atmosphere/Vibe/Decor: Oh man, it definitely goes with the mushroom theme ;) I was impressed by the decor and flabbergasted by the art work & lights. As I have mentioned on other Mellow Mushroom locations reviews I'm not a huge fan anymore of mellow mushroom regular pizzas (just has a little much bread for me). However, I have seen locations that late night do a new York style that is incredible. I don't know if this location does that as I haven't been late night yet. But I will say this is one of the nicer Mellow Mushrooms I have been to. Especially the bar and the outdoor seating (and outdoor bar window). Very nicely designed. And you will have to review the pizza for yourself - many love it (and I did originally). read more

Took the kids here one Saturday evening to be greeted with a distracted server who was stressing out about a large party about to come. Welcome to Mellow Mushroom, I guess. I look around and it has the look of Cheesecake Factory but the feel of Cheeseburger in Paradise. No joke. Let it be known, this is a children's restaurant. I repeat, please do not come here for date night lest you be inundated with screaming babies and pretzel bites. Just want to set expectations for you. Upon being seated, we were greeted again by stressy server who was whining about the large party that was about to come in. Am I going to be able to relax and enjoy my dinner or should we just leave? I mean, service 101, guys. The good news is they have happy hour everyday and so I put that wine order in quick. My kids ordered the cheese & pepperoni French bread kids meals and I opted for the small Holy Shiitake Pie, which was actually pretty great. Crust was about 80% of the pizza. I would say the Mellow Mushroom, in general, is comprised of about 90% carbs, 5% sugar soda, and 5% high school wait staff. Again, setting the expectation bar where it need be. My son ended up spilling his drink at one point and they were very prompt and gracious about cleaning it up. Stressy server disappeared for awhile and we suddenly had a new kid server who I guess took over his tables. Nice enough, just lots of calamity, chaos and disorder here. Not exactly a welcoming place you want to stay and enjoy your meal so we got the hell out of there pretty quickly. For the life of me, I can't understand why they have such a beautiful, well-appointed bar inviting patrons to come and have a drink at basically a Chuckee Cheese.
