We had lunch at the Mellow Mushroom in Midlothian for the first time. I pass by here often when going to Lowes or Costco from 60 but the sign and building windows that face my commute look like it's under construction or an abandoned building. I honestly thought it went out of business months ago.. The ambiance is so cool. We entered through some gigantic doors and the inside is fantastic. The ceiling, walls, furniture are decorated by local artists in a colorful shroom induced style.. love the golden couches... Even the menu has a super 70's colors surrealist vibe. (Teenage Dali on Shrooms) We ordered a half Mighty Meaty and half House Special large classic crust pizza to spilt ($25). I was very happy that our waitress Jeanette brought us a pitcher of water right off the bat.. She was knowledgeable about the dishes and building. She explained that our wait would be about 25 minutes since everything will be made fresh. I appreciate knowing this in advance. The pizza was good, but not great. We liked the Meaty one better but I'm not sure I could tell the difference between a frozen pizza and this one. Next time I'm gonna go with thin crust and probably the Kosmos one. I love the atmosphere and service so I am determined to find something I like here. I'm my world of pizza there are two categories: The New York thin crust slice and everything else. On my quest towards trying new restaurants in RVA, I stumbled across Mellow Mushroom. Prior to going a few days ago, I heard great things about the restaurant from friends and family who had been before. Because I like to live life on the wild side, I decided to take a chance and see if I would be a fan of the restaurant as well. How did my experience go? To find out, read below. The Good: Service- The service was one of the few highlights of my experience. The server was able to answer any questions that were asked and did not need to be hunted down to refill a drink. Taste of Pizza- While I didn't order the pizza, I was able to taste a slice from those that were part of my party. The pizza was hot, ingredients were fresh and the taste was overall pretty good, way better than Pizza Hut or Papa Johns pizza. The Bad: Wait for Food- I wanna say that the wait for food was well over 25 minutes. If the restaurant were busy then I could see why the wait would be so long. But the restaurant wasn't even at 25% capacity when the order was placed and there were at least 5 cooks in the kitchen during this time. Taste of the Steak and Cheese Sub- When I finally received my food, my Steak and Cheese sub was stone cold. The cheese that came with it had already solidified. On top of the cold sandwich, the steak on the Steak and Cheese had absolutely no flavor. No type of seasoning nor any time of greasy taste to it. The bread that was used was a little thick for a Steak and Cheese sub. Overall, this is not something that I would order again. Overall- The service and taste of something that I didn't even order was the only reason that I didn't give this place One Star. But the wait for the food as well as the blandness of a $10 Steak and Cheese was pretty bad. Because of the great service, I could see myself giving this place another chance. But I would hope that they improve the quality of their Steak and Cheese for the future. TWO STARS. read more

I probably enjoy the salads more than the pizzas. I got the regular greek salad with no feta and added tempeh. They put the tempeh in tin foil, and it wasn't a good amount at all. Only like 3 pieces but that's okay because of the stress they're under during these times. Otherwise very delicious. read more

I love a good MM pizza...other than here. I live two miles away and have been here three times since they opened. Each time was NOT an acceptable experience. Amazing the difference in this location and Carytown. Came at 1:30. Three people were eating at the bar. Within 10 minutes, 3 employees told me the bartender would be back to take my order. Another 10 minutes later, the bartender showed up, washed some dishes and told me my to-go order would be out soon. Of course, I hadn't ordered and it wasn't to go. Mushroom soup and small pizza. They brought me about 1/2 cup of soup; said it was all they had left. In other words, we scraped the bottom of the barrel. No thanks. I ordered 5 toppings on my pizza and got 3. I just walked in there 30 minutes ago. We were placed at a table. No one came to greet us or give us water. All the waitresses/waiters looked at me sitting there waiting to order and they all walked right on by. Still sat there for another 15 min. No one came to take my order or give me at least any water. No one. Gave it a few more minutes and got up to leave. The hostess said Good bye. She didn't even ask why we were leaving so soon or ask whether or not we have been helped. She also mumbled under her breath "I'm so done with today." Context of the restuarant: huge venue with only 5 tables being served excluding me. Empty tables everywhere and waiters standing around and chatting with eachother laughing while some were cleaning empty tables. Still we were ignored or unnoticed. I was really excited that they put a Mellow Mushroom in Midlothian! I had actually only been to this restaurant down in Tampa, FL. Hadn't had the chance to check out the one in Carytown or the one in Short Pump! We came here on a Sunday late afternoon. As soon as we walked in, I immediately noticed the vibrant decor. It was very unique and interesting look! We were sat promptly even though it was very busy. Our service was great. The server taking care of us frequently checked on us and made sure we were taken of, always with a smile on her face. We started with Garlic Cheese Bread, it didn't last long. lol I also ordered a lil' Greek Salad (minus onions) with an herb vinaigrette. So, let me just say, this is not a LIL' anything! It was huge! I ate some of it and ended up taking the rest home. It was super yummy though with feta, kalamata olives, & banana peppers... Mmmmm! As for the pizza, I chose the House Special minus some toppings (yes, I am that girl!), which still left several toppings! It was delish! Overall experience was subpar and most likely will not repeat. Service: Overall average service by the wait staff. Nothing spectacular, but nothing great. The kitchen was the let down tonight. Food: The pizza was alright for me, but we had issues with others in our group. Chicken wings arrived to us cold, the burger arrived well after everyone else's food arrived. The burger didn't even come with the side (tater tots). There was even an oddly long delay between the arrival of the pizzas and calzone and a house salad. Not sure why they couldn't get the order out at once. One item that was ordered was never made and brought out. Atmosphere/Misc: Groovy 70's decor, chairs at our table were uncomfortable. We decided to try this, the newest Mellow Mushroom location in the Richmond area, and we weren't disappointed. As the location just opened a few weeks ago, we knew it would be busy and that was an understatement. The location is beautifully decorated, clean and upon arriving we were quickly greeted by their friendly staff and seated to our table. The server, Lauren, was outstanding! She quickly introduced herself and took our drink orders. We perused the appetizer menu and ordered the garlic cheese bread when she returned with our drinks. We also ordered a meatball hoagie and a medium pizza with our choice of vegetable toppings. The appetizer, a cheesy french bread concoction with a side of red sauce for dipping, came promptly and hit the spot while we waited...and waited..and waited a little longer. 20 minutes later the main orders arrived. The meatball hoagie was a hit..large tasty meatballs smothered in sauce and topped with cheese served on a crusty french roll with a side of chips. The star of the show and well worth the wait however was..the pizza! Mellow-licious!! Let me tell you..the crust is phenomenal. Handmade and cooked on a stone..yowza!.. Throughout our dining experience our server checked on us frequently, refreshed our drinks, was friendly and professional and made our first trip to the restaurant memorable. Solid Mellow Mushroom. We sat in the bar for Father's Day and had great service, great pizza, and a great atmosphere. The bruschetta (not pictured was delicious) and the house special pizza (pictured - though missing two slices from hungry eaters :)) was a hit. After a long work week, T and I wanted pizza. So we intentionally went to this side of town for errands and Mellow!! We were greeted when walking in, and were immediately sat on a Friday night around 8ish. It was perfect. Our area of the restaurant was clean and I loved the decor -- the dim lights made it feel cozy and surprisingly, though it was hot outside, it wasn't a complete icebox inside (I mean, seriously, the worst is trying to eat dinner but being so cold, you can't enjoy it!) Summer was our waitress. She was friendly and attentive. We ordered the bruschetta which I have never ordered at MM, and man, it was amazing. Tasted really fresh and was served on garlic toasted bread. Yum. Of course, we went for the classic, Mighty Meaty. the pizza wasn't overwhelmed with sauce (which is the best -- never fun to be swimming in sauce while eating your pizza!). It is such an amazing restaurant, they have fancy chairs nice benches amazing outdoor seating and really awesome and nice people and like waitresses and waiters. Plus the food is absolutely amazing. Lunch with a friend I arrived around 1:15 on o Wednesday afternoon and was greeted and seated immediately while I waited for my friend to arrive. There was a little confusion as to who had my table since I sat for a few minutes and no one acknowledged I was there.. I did want some water while I waited.. tea or something. It got better though. Our server came over immediately because the place was busy. They have lunch specials between 11-2. The place seemed much less busy around 2 as we were leaving. As other reviewers stated the parking is a little challenging. Once the construction on the other building is complete this should help. I was able to get a spot in front. Now for the food. My friend ordered the lil Greek salad and the small House Special pizza. Wow that lip greek is enough for 2. The pizza was a nice size too. I ordered the Veggie Calzone (Hugh) and the lil Greek salad. We were both satisfied with our food items. Absolutely delish. Tasted freshly made. We did not have a long wait even though the place was busy. The actual restaurant is pretty and a little whimsical. It's worth a visit and we will definitely return. read more

I wasn't a huge fan of this location for dinner. It was of course busy, but not so busy to get service or drinks or food at a respectable time. Walking into the restaraunt I was not greeted right away and kind of had to navigate around to find the right area since the eat in and take out were in the same spot. I ended up finding a table by the bar, but no one came to take orders so we got our drinks from the bar and then someone was sent over to take our orders. The pizza took awhile to come to the table, while I looked at the front counter and take out orders were going left and right, and didn't seem to be any wait. I wondered why these orders were going out so fast. The drinks were hit or miss with the time it took to get them and refills, and also accuracy. I understand it was busy but it seems like this place is always busy and they should be ready for anything that happens and adjust to the busy times. It is probably not a location I would come back to unless a group of people were meeting. *Edit* I was contacted about my review by the owner because he thought I was confused about where I was and that I had the location wrong... Ordered large pepperoni w double mushroom added to one side for the hubby and kids. I indulged on the pepperoni slice. I was pretty good as we jammed to the 70s and 80s music playing overhead. I've been to plenty of pizza places in my 31 years of life. The best ones are usually cheap, greasy dives with single slice options, but Mellow is a funky middle finger to traditional (and that's a good thing). I have been to quite a few 'Mushrooms all over the east coast, and used to live a block away from the Carytown location, but as my new local hangout, this one seems like one of the most spacious and intricately decorated locations I've ever been to. With a huge dining room, a covered patio area and expansive U-shaped bar, there's usually little to no wait and plenty of seating available. The menu is a mix of traditional (pizza, salads, wings) and creative (pretzels, hoagies, vegetarian dishes). With tons of pizza toppings ranging from pepperoni to jerk chicken, if you can dream it, Mellow can bake it. Offering specials and activities almost every day ($3 kid meal Mondays, karaoke Tuesdays, wine Wednesday, trivia Thursday, live music on the weekend and brunch specials on Sunday). Shout out to my boy Walter for holding down the karaoke with a literal phone book full of songs, and the bartenders and waitstaff for always being pleasant and cheerful no matter what day it is. The server was doing the absolute best to deal with beverage and food orders but was honestly over his head with as many of us as there were. An observant manager should have recognized that this was a nightmare waiting to happen and to only provide assistance to the delivery of the food items, so serving of beverages was very slow and food item even slower. Most of this group was pleased with the food but some left much to be desired. A policy of one server waiting on a maximum of 8 to 10 people should be considered because more than that service will certainly suffer as it did with our group. The service was amazing and our server ( Samantha, who is also a bartender) was amazing with the drink menu and actually made jalapeño margaritas for our table and they where spectacular. The food is better than I could have imagined, the salads are an entire meal in itself and the wings are some of the best wings we have ever had. Plus if you get them naked they are gluten free!! So for Juneteenth this year my job was having a special webinar presentation at 1pm. Me and my coworker decided we would get a pizza for the event. Mellow Mushroom is near me so I figured I could pick it up on the way to work. My coworker placed the order for a 1215p pickup. I arrived around 1210p and they told me it would be about five more minutes. Okay cool. My job is just under thirty minutes from where I was, so I'm thinking I still have time to get there by 1p. So it's now 1225p and I'm asking how much longer and they say he's boxing it up now. But still no pizza several minutes later. So I express I have to be at work at a specific time. I requested 1215 pickup. So they're excuse to me was the order said extra crispy crust. So they were trying to crisp up the crust some more, which is all completely understandable. But if the pickup time was 1215p, why are you still working on the pizza at 1230? Needless to say I was late for the event. But the pizza was pretty good. I just feel the website shouldn't ask a customer what time they wanna pickup an order if the order isn't going to be ready for pickup at the designated time. That's a huge issue for me. But overall the pizza's are decent and worthy of a repeat. read more

I have been to the Carytown location several times and loved it. The Midlothian location, however, is one that I will not be visiting again. My guard went up when the table next to us had to track down a server to get plates. Pizza was delivered. No plates. We ordered pretzels as an app, I had a salad and my husband had a hoagie. The server said he would bring my salad (a large salad) out asap. I said, "No. the pretzels were the app and the salad should come out with the other entree." He said ok and went away. Soon, a small salad arrived. I had the server take it away. Then the server said the manager was aware of the problem and was looking into where the pretzels were. Pretzels arrived 15 minutes later. Then entrees. The pretzels were slightly undercooked. Asked for two boxes, got one. Asked server for the bill and he wandered off to front of restaurant.Manager didn't stop by but I flagged him down when he visited a table nearby. He issued an insincere apology for the poor service that was so insincere that he should really practice that facet of managing a restaurant...What a disappointment. read more

I have come to this location since they opened and started ordering to go during Covid. Unfortunately the kitchen is overwhelmed consistently and pizzas are consistently late. The staff is trying. But I am going to have to take this Mellow Mushroom location off my list until pizzas are ready by the requested time - not 30-60 minutes late. There is also no opportunity to send feedback on the website. Food is good and location has fun theme. Just plan on everything taking awhile. read more
