Another customer exiting the building said that someone would let me out after my purchase. The shelves were full of packaged mainstream breads you would find at your supermarket at reasonable prices. Don't expect bakery outlet prices here. Found Melrose Baking company on yelp and stopped by there today after reading the great reviews. I have been looking for a bakery for the longest time that sells squaw bread and was so happy today that I found it here. Was greeted by the owner who graciously showed me the available overflow items and even gave me some complimentary wheat hamburger rolls thanking me for driving out to try them out. The bread loaf is hugh and so soft! Can't wait to make sandwiches with it. Looking forward to trying everything and next time will definitely go to see them at the Torrance farmer's market on Tuesdays then they have a booth there. read more

I was visiting family in Passedena. Breakfast at a local restaurant was served with the best gluten free toast that I have ever tasted. The waitress told me the bread was from Melrose Baking Company. I tracked them down and was able to bring two loaves back to Chicago with me. This gluten free bread is dense and not fluff. It has a great flavor, it does not fall apart when used as a sandwich or when toasted. It is by far the best gluten free bread that I had had in the 12 years that I have had to eat gluten free! I was nearby this bakery so decided to give a try. On Sunday afternoon arrived around 2:50pm-3pm, I followed the instruction on yelp to find the parking lot. After I parked, I was still confused about finding a red door to go in. So here is my adventure... Location: if you use google gps, type in Pedro Builder which def will be more helpful than typing actual address. Once you are on the Painter Ave, you will see a sign directing you to the alley! So pay attention to the sign. ( I should've taken a picture). Drive along the alley you will find the parking lot on your left hand side. You shall see their vans already. Then you know you are in the right place. Park your car and look for the stairs to go up to the office. ( At least that's what I was told today). Yes it can be intimidating when the sign says employees only. The office is located on the second floor. I walked in and there was only one lady who was working. She was busy but very polite to tell me that it may be awhile. I waited there only a few minutes. She led me downstairs to choose the bread. Many sourdoughs left which isn't my fav. There were also brioche bread, honey wheat, marble rye etc. there were no signs for the prices. She was very patient with me to answer my question. Tip 1: The bread doesn't have preservative so can only last 3-4 days so put them in the frig :) Tip2: Go there early BEFORE 2 PM. ( I went to late, the girl was still very nice to let me buy bread since it was really late 3pm) They don't over make breads because they don't want to waste the bread. They do also give to church people at the end of the days. It was so kind when I heard that. I only had $3. The honey wheat is $4. She let me just pay $3. Tip 3: credit card is accepted but may have some extra charges. So BRING CASH. read more

Update: So I decided to update this to 5 stars. I toasted the sour dough and shared some with my brother and we decided this place is legit... Original review: I've seriously tried to find this place 2 other times before today in the last few years and never could find it! However, I was nearby and remembered my mom was looking for a place to buy marble rye bread and I thought they would have some here. Sure enough, they did! It was the biggest loaf of bread I've ever purchased... at least 18 inches long and 7 inches tall. I also got a sourdough bread bowl and a couple croissants. Bread was good and fresh but the croissants were better toasted. Finding this place is an adventure... I got lucky and saw the sign to show the alley the bakery is at while driving with my GPS... previously, I was sent on a goose chase and could not find it. I was always directed to the street with formal businesses but it was on the other side so I had given up. When I got to the lot, it looked like a back entrance and no signs to give a hint on where to go. No one was around so I actually left and drove around thinking there was another entrance but came back and a bumped into a worker who told me to knock on the upstairs office door. I'm sure there is a review that says how to do this but I didn't get a chance to look over them. I was on a mission! The lady who helped was nice. We really like the blueberry muffins. They are moist, tasty with a good amount of blueberries, and not too sweet. I was not able to get any goodies today, but I was able to place an order for pick up on Wednesday. They do not bake on Sunday or Tuesday is what I gathered for public consumption. That was fine. I was able to place an order for almond and chocolate croissants at less than $2 each with Melissa. Service is good they are always nice and ready to help. Only thing is It's hidden down a small driveway, they do have a small parking that's mostly filled with delivery trucks so parking can be tough just remember they are a full time bread company that supplies restaurants so you will be walking into a warehouse full of bread. Absolutely amazing! You would not have expected for there to be a bakery open to the public around this area, but this is truly a hidden gem. It's a little difficult to find but there's a sign on Painter pointing to the entrance. I ended up getting 4 pastries: Ham and Cheese Croissant (5/5): probably one of the best and freshest ham and cheese croissants I've had! It was soft and flakey on the inside with a nice crunch on the outside. The ham wasn't too salty like some ham and cheese croissants can be and they used good quality real cheese and not American cheese. Blueberry Muffin (5/5): this was sooo good! It was so soft and moist. The blueberry flavor was strong and abundant. One of the best muffins I've had! Cream Cheese Danish (4.5/5): love this as well! They definitely do not go cheap on the cream cheese center. Chocolate Chip Scone (1/5): this was the only miss for me. Scones are one of my favorites and I'm familiar with their texture. The scone I had today was beyond dry and flavorless. I suspect it might've been day(s) old since it was the only pastry wrapped up. The customer service here was the best I've received! She was so patient and enthusiastic about showing us the pastries. The gentleman was also super friendly and inviting. The staff here really made my day today, thank you! Melrose baking company primarily sells their products to other businesses, so I appreciated the time the owner took to sell us his fresh bread. It was a little hard to find the bakery since it's located off a small street. We got the dense sweet french bread, sourdough, and breadsticks. The french bread was amazing, slightly sweet and very fresh. The mouthfeel was fluffy a with a thin crust for contrast. The sourdough was tasty as were the upper scale restaurant quality breadsticks. The bread is solid and I would be happy to consume their baking goods at any local restaurant. read more
