I have always been going to Costa Mesa to visit friends and I have always parked on the street next to the Memphis Cafe. More often than not, this place is bustling with plenty of road traffic and sometimes a line. Because of its location, I always assumed Memphis was a dance club of sorts and I could have not been more wrong. Memphis Cafe is a tasteful little restaurant that caters to brunch and late nights in the bustling part of Costa Mesa. The floor itself is on the smaller side which makes it pretty packed fairly easy. The parking lot doesn't do justice either by having compact spots and streetside parking but the service is worth it and the drinks fantastic! I am not a very sociable person at bars since I enjoy drinking and people watching or just relaxing, however the bartending staff here was incredibly friendly and knew their drinks. My favorite seasonal cocktail was the Fallen Tree. I can see myself coming back here! read more

Apparently you go here for brunch, but I just had an item off the lunch menu. = L O C A T I O N = It's located slightly off from the LAB, and has it's own lot. However, the lot is pretty small so you might have trouble parking. Inside is pretty small and dark. There is some patio seating but the day we were there was a group having a baby shower outside. They showcase local artists' work on their walls. Okay so I've been to Memphis before and had a great experience but, hello? Brunch? On a SATURDAY when everyone else is doing Sunday? Yeah. I'm in. 100% The in house Bloody Mary mix is fantastic - making it superior to a lot in the area (hate an overpowering mix) I had the traditional egg breakfast and the bacon was super crispy, the potato cake was perfectly cooked and the chives were a nice compliment. I was really looking forward to going here again since we haven't been back in 7years. First the service was ok. The food and drink were the problems. I initially got an Arnold Palmer and it had a weird manure after taste. Thankfully, I was able to change it but it just spirals downward. I order the beet and goat's cheese salad with a side of grilled chicken. For a salad that cost $25 it was the worst salad I have ever had! First no taste on mountain of bland arugula covered in oil. Then a really dry dry piece of chicken. I thought they would at least season the beets but no. Since the salad was blah at best I had some of the pulled pork sandwich and again everything was under sauced unsalted. It was also very warm yesterday and we were seating in the back patio area. We had another friend who ordered the club sandwich and she just picked at it and tore it apart to eat the ok parts. I don't remember it being so bad. Probably my favorite breakfast spot! It does get crowded after about 9am on weekends I recommend making reservations through yelp. The parking usually gets crowded after that time but they do have you valet. Food- they have a lot of options to choose from my favorite is the first item on the menu which is the 2 egg breakfast. The servings are really filling and the food tastes really authentic and fresh. The inside is very dark and a bar like ambiance (they actually do have a bar) and outside it's more brunch vibes. Came for brunch and got the bbq shrimp and grits. They have some good grits but the bbq shrimp was fairly basic. There are also only about four shrimp pieces so if you expect a real shrimp dish, browse on! Altogether alongside the salad it came with, the dish was a solid meal. I came back to Memphis to try their brunch. I visited on a weekday and there was no line. There was no hostess, no server that greeted us like my last visit. Instead, one of the waiters, while mopping down a table by the restroom, told me to sit wherever I want. The weather was so nice, so I opted to dine outside. The restaurant was really dark inside, like they didn't have any lighting besides the sun from the windows and doors. The atmosphere here is really laid back - a little too much for my liking. The servers generally leave you alone and only check up on you when it's time to order and pay. Our waiter was so tall..kinda awkward to tilt my head all the way back to talk to him. He just stood there like he didn't really care. I've seen other waiters get more personal and take a seat in adjacent empty tables. I thought the food here was just average. While I enjoyed the buttermilk fried chicken, the waffles did not live up to the same great taste as its partner. The waffle was too thick. It looked like it could have been a Belgian but did not taste fluffy like one. The chicken didn't really need the extra gravy, but that was a nice touch. My eating partner ordered the shrimp frittata. It tasted really sweet and was really lacking in shrimp, which was pretty disappointing. Note: There are restrooms behind the curtain/veil. Came here for Sunday brunch. The indoor portion of the restaurant was pretty dark with a casual retro diner feel to it. Pretty nice! I could hear 80's alternative flashbacks playing in the background (KROQ classics like Morrissey, Depeche Mode etc) The nostaglia almost brought a tear to my eye. Since it was warm, we decided to eat outside in the covered patio area. The outside portion of the restaurant was cool and laid back with a no fuss atmosphere. Our server was friendly and attentive, yet quirky and hip. The crowd was cool, no trendy attitude or anything, just a nice laid back Sunday morning crowd enjoying good southern style brunch fare. Menu selections for breakfast/ brunch were pretty decent and reasonably priced, as well. The alcohol menu for brunch was quite huge! I was impressed! Crawfish omelet was loaded with mouthwatering crawfish. I recommend dowsing it with a generous helping of Red Rooster hot sauce! The Red Rooster gave the omelet a much needed Cajun kick of robust flavor! YUMMMM The deep fried mash side was absolutely amazing! It was crispy and crunchy on the outside yet soft and smooth on the inside! Bliss! The Chorizo skillet special was also kick-ass with loads of well seasoned chorizo mixed with peppers, potatoes and topped with melted cheddar cheese. The chorizo came served with three warm tortillas and a side of fluffy scrambled eggs! I had my first fried chicken and waffles experience at Memphis, and it was scrumptious! The waffles were good, although the Buttermilk Fried Chicken was the star. I loved that it was a boneless piece, perfectly fried and really flavorful with the gravy. The eggs completed the dish as I could dip my bite in the runny yolk. For brunch they offer $3 orange or hibiscus mimosas which were good, but their breakfast cocktails are beautifully crafted with amazing flavors. Those are the way to go. The restaurant opens at 10am on Sundays for brunch and it didn't start filling up until 11. The patio is very refreshing and the interior has a cute vintage feel. I hear the soul of Memphis is music - country,rock, and blues. It's supposedly a raw town compared to the well heeled Nashville. Memphis supposedly has down home good grub. So I took a young, non-drinking friend I know from martial arts for one of his 21st birthday dinners. To get things stated, he had a Hurricane and I had a coke. I felt kind of guilty suggesting a Hurricane this time. I saw the bartender gabbing and I think he threw in extra stuff to kick it up a notch..It tasted awesome and kick butt strong. Could my friend handle it? Ha ha - surprisingly yeah! To eat, he ordered a Pulled Pork Sandwich ($16) with sweet potato fries and cole slaw. I had the crab cake ($5) and bowl of gumbo ($5) - both were a special Happy Hour price. I was saving my tummy for beer and nachos and dessert and coffee at Gypsy Den next door after dinner. This was my second time here. Both times, the food was fairly good. but the place itself is tiny and cozy so you could hear other parties. This night, I heard one drunk guy mumbling something about his love of Mary Jane Weed to his friends. Next to us were the strapless dress wearing cougars complaining about their cheapskate boyfriends. The building is old and kind of run down. So don't come her for the ambiance alone, though the service was definitely four star. The food came out in 15 minutes. My gumbo was awesome with a Mississippi mud colored broth with bits of sausage and shrimp and yummy broth with a scoop of white rice in the middle. Just like I've had in N'awlins. The crab cake was okay. I prefer crab cakes like they are in Maryland where the meat takes over, and there is minimal breadcrumbs and no overpowering spices that hide the mellow sweetness of the crab. My friends pulled pork was better. It was sweet, tangy, and juicy. In my previous visit, I had the crispy fried chicken ($17) with two sides, and it's my favorite entree so far, Service was very good. We had a very cool waitress who refilled the coke and my water regularly and gave good descriptions of what we were considering. I was surprised that my non drinker friend could walk and be coherent. after a large Hurricane The Gypsy Den cafe did have open mike that night, and challenged musicians and singers always sound better with booze. Let me start by telling you that 1. Zak said more than three times he wished we lived near this place while we were there. and 2. We were RAGGED in more ways than one and my trusty YELP app sent us to a place called "Old Vine Cafe". I could go on and on about how crowded the parking lot was and how Zak thought it was a Yuppy farm, etc. But I wont. We just turned around and slowly dragged ourselves back to the car with little hope we would find a place that was just right for our last OC meal before heading back to the Bay Area on long Sunday drive... But... There it was. "Memphis" 4 solid stars and? RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET! It didn't look like much from the outside... Gravel parking lot in front... no windows. no windows?! haha I told Zak "4 solid Yelp stars and chubby older white people walking out on a Sunday morning - they HAVE TO SERVE A GOOD BREAKFAST!" So in we went! Super friendly right from the get go! "Patio?" the girl asked as we looked around. "YES" we replied in unison. Oh my God it was THE perfect spot for us! It was dimly lit inside and you could hear the cook's clangin pots around in the kitchen so we knew we were in for a treat.. There was a pretty loud buzz of talking amplified from every angle, but somehow it was just the right tone to not make the hangover headache worse. We were seated in the corner of the patio outside and then... my jaw dropped. As she handed me my menu upside down my eyes (naturally) went to the words "BRUNCH COCKTAILS" . Oh yes, people! There is a whole NUTHA section of cocktails dedicated to wet your whistle for Brunch time! Bellinis... $11 bottomless Mimosas! and then the kicker for me? 2 for 1 Bloody Marys with entree purchase. Oh my God I was in heaven. And those of you who follow me know that I order my Bloody Mary with Extra OLIVES everytime and I mean EXTRA when I say Extra. To me this means 6 Olives and I'm happy. Well, folks... I got 2 Olives in my drink and a Whiskey glass FULL of Olives on the side! SOLD! Memphis is the best. But wait... I haven't told you about the food yet?! Holy CRAP! I couldn't believe how good it was! At a nice restaurant you would have accepted less. and here we were at this divy dingy little place and Zak was ooooohing and OMGing over his French Toast with Carmelized Apples gently placed in a little pool of some kind of insanely sweet sauce that I spooned into my mouth a few times from across the table. I had the Southern Benedict. Corned Beef and a thick egg atop a slice of Texas Toast with the Hollandaise sauce and the whole Nine. Just heaven I tell ya. HEAVEN. Those Bloody Mary's were pretty clear too if I do say so! I told our server how fricken BADASS I thought it was that we stumbled in and that we just love everything about it right down to the stiff morning cock-tails. "Our 1st priority is good food here, but we DO like to get people drunk too!" She is just as SWEET N Badass as the Memphis itself! She's been there for 8 years and LOVES IT. First time at Memphis, and not even two minutes on the barstool and the very eger bartender calls me out to move over three seats putting me in the kitchen service counter because he wants me to be 6ft. Which I already was based on the guy to my left then he was me to set behind a plastic partition. And of course, his regulars are shoulder to shoulder with no 6ft between them and or plastic wall. So of course he was a total ass hole to me. I feel totally discriminated against. I asked for a French Martini original he gave me a raspberry syrup not good it should have been Chambord. Very disappointing. I tend to agree with most Yelp ratings, but after my dinner Wednesday night, Memphis left me unimpressed. While I really liked the design of the place (cool interior, intimate, dim lighting, patio area) and service was generally pretty good, I thought the food was mediocre and overpriced. Pulled Pork Sandwich - It was okay, but I wouldn't get it again. The pork was dry and flavorless. I had to drench it in bbq sauce to enjoy it just a little bit. The bun they used was sort of tough. I would of preferred a soft potato bun. The pulled pork at Lucille's is better and not as expensive. Mac & Cheese (side) - I'm more of an ooey gooey cheese fan than a bake in the oven until it's completely hard and dried up type of fan, so I wasn't in love with this mac & cheese. Potato Pancakes (side) - GROSS!!! I was expecting something along the lines of an Ecuadorian potato pancakes or the potato pancakes at Claim Jumper where its fried crispy on the outside and there's a soft, moist potato center. These things were made from super dry mashed potatoes and tasted like fried bits of cardboard. Mashed Potatoes (side) - Better than the potato pancakes, but nothing special. Not seasoned nearly enough and not creamy at all. Tasted literally like they just mashed a potato and put right in a bowl. Down Home Gumbo - Probably good if you like gumbo. I was never a fan, but my friend thought it was okay. Corn Bread - Free! Can't really complain about free corn bread, but the deep dish corn bread at Z'tejas is way better. Okay, so to be fair, I have only tried a couple things on the menu. I still would like to come back to Memphis to try their Fried Chicken. $17.50 for fried chicken is way steep though. That's like 2 buckets worth at KFC! However, if you go on a Thursday, the chicken is half off. It's also worth noting that BBQ items are just $11.95 on Sundays (normally $15.75). read more

So came in and they were sat already. Service was good and took my drink order right away. So scaling the menu they had some yummy sounding things but nothing really jumped out at me. My gf started with two appetizers. Some skrimp dish and crab cakes. It was alright but the food smelled to fragrant to me and when seafood has that smell it instantly makes you wonder was this seafood in the back on its way out! How have I not reviewed Memphis? This is a travesty. Memphis is pretty much my go-to place when life just seems too hard to go anywhere else, or I just want some relatively cheap eats, good tunes with some good friends. Everything is good. Sometimes it's better than good. Sometimes it's okay. They're reliable that way. The drinks are always pretty right on time. The music has better days and so-so days. Sound like a mediocre review? Well I wouldn't take my parents there, but it's very freakin' homey and satisfying. And I love that. Go there for that. Great food, staff and drinks (not some place to impress your parents or to go on a first date or to celebrate graduation or some crap like that). Lazy Sunday = Memphis, dimly lit drinks on a weeknight (late night happy hour, yes plz) = Memphis, late Saturday lunch = Memphis. Got it? Now. A few things. The fried okra will change the way you think about okra, it's pretty amazing. The cobblers here will make you smile and be smitten, and the fried chicken is damn good. Have it on a waffle or on some greens and mashed potatoes. They have specials and are very accommodating for special requests. And if you stay here past 11pm, your princess gown might turn into a douchey tribal tattooed shirt. I'm not a fan of the late night at all. But that's fine. I didn't come here to dance. We were fortunate enough to get here about 15 minutes before happy hour was up, so we decided to split a few of the smaller bite plates and get a feel for this venue. Definite winner of the night for both of us, I think, was the Pork Sliders. The bread to meat ratio was perfect, the sauce amount was just right, and the slaw wasn't so strong that it overwhelmed the rest of the sandwich. Soul burger was very tasty. We opted to get everything but the BBQ on the side, since I'm not a huge fan of spicy food, but my husband enjoys it. The meatloaf itself was really good, but the bread it came on was hard, so I just removed it completely from it. Duck quesadilla was a miss altogether for me personally. It was very greasy, messy to eat, had an odd flavor, and just wasn't for me. But hey, this is why we did the small bites and paid happy hour prices! Drinks were good, service was great, and atmosphere was very homey. I just had a bowl of gumbo and a beet salad for lunch. I'm not an expert of Southern food, so this is strictly my personal taste/opinion. The gumbo tasted like gravy sauce. I had one there a long time ago (pre pandemic) and thought it was great. What happened?? Beet salad ($13) had about 5 little pieces of beets. I had to ask more. Had my expectation been too high? WARNING: Sorry people! My pictures suck. Thanks John L.! i was a bit hesitant in coming to Memphis Cafe just because of my past experience with their Santa Ana location. I tried suggesting other locations but my friend was adamant that we eat at Memphis Cafe. I made sure to catch a later lunch so that I wouldn't be so hungry come dinner time. This location is a lot more "intimate" than the Santa Ana location. There was literally one waitress on staff that night BUT she held it all on her own gracefully. Our waters were always filled and our dishes continuously came out at the perfect time. Fuzzy Navel cocktail: The bartender made it super strong. I got buzzed after drinking half of it! You get more bang for your buck. Popcorn shrimp: You don't get much but it is pretty tasty. The batter is different. A lot more grainy and the shrimp were tiny as heck. Crab cakes: I've had better but the actual cakes weren't tough and dry and you could taste the corn kernels. The crab cakes were probably my favorite. Zuni frybread: I can see where they thought this would be a good dish but I was thoroughly disappointed with this one. I even gave it a second chance and ate a second slice but it still left me disappointed. It tasted funky and it was just plain BLEH. Mediocre. Steamed mussels: The white wine-tomato broth was most excellent. I just wanted to pick it up with my hands and gulp it down. The bits of andouille sausage gave the broth a nice spicy kick to it and it gave the mussels some great flavor to kind of balance out the seafood taste. Grilled pork porterhouse: What a pleasant surprise. I don't like meat much, especially big pieces of meat like this big, thick slab of pork. I thought the polenta was mashed potatoes but I was surprised when I tasted cheese. The braised red cabbage was my favorite part of the dish. I owe it all to the braising! Had it not been, it probably would've been plain and nasty. The porterhouse was a little rough but when I was able to cut off a piece, it was more than I expected it to be. Make sure you soak it up in the balsamic reduction. That's what brings out the flavors. Molten chocolate cake: The cake itself was pretty dry with the exception of the side which looked to be some sort of chocolate frosting. It's garnished with fresh fruit along with chocolate sauce and powdered sugar. It was decent but I wasn't too impressed. Overall a decent meal but I'm not sure if I'd go out of my way and come back. Buttermilk Fried Chicken- GET IT! This chicken was perfectly fried, crispy and juicy. Mashed potatoes were delicious and I could have just ate a bowl full of those on my own. The greens were seasoned great! The entire dish is composed so well! We were in a large group and the service was excellent, our waitress did not miss a beat. But seriously, get the buttermilk fried chicken! You won't be disappointed! AND this dish is $10 during one of the days of the week. (maybe Thurs? Sat and waited 25min, not even a drink order placed. Looks good, probably good food. But, wouldn't know because of the amount of time it took for them to walk passed us, we left. This place has had a few bad reviews lately so we went in open minded tonight but left pretty pleased with the experience. For a Saturday night, we were happy to be seated right away. We realized after watching others sit down, we somehow missed out on the cornbread. Later we heard another table mention that they didn't get any, which was strange. Our server helped us pick great options to share which was great. We started with the quesadilla, pulled pork sliders, and Mac and cheese. All three starters were flavorful and hit the spot perfectly. We then shared the fried chicken which was some of the best fried chicken I've had. The mashed potatoes were a perfect match on this dish as well. Overall, the prices seem very high for the amount of food you actually get. The cocktails were all $10 as well even though they were small. The dining room is also very cramped and you're sitting extremely close to others. read more

We came here for a work lunch since we were in the area. First time here and it is a cool little spot. Parking lot is not too big but for lunch it wasnt too packed. We walked in and we selected to sit and eat in the patio area. It was a hot day but felt ok out there with all their fans. Service was nice and drinks and food were brought back in a good amount of time. I ordered the meatloaf. To me, it was really good! The wine in the gravy was really good as well. It comes with cheese on top of the meatloaf which is on top of mashed potatoes and greenbeans. You guys did a great job with it. Didn't try any of the drinks just had water but would like to come back again when in the area to try more items. It was a good experience. read more

What an amazing hole in the wall bar & grill. Reminds me of a rejuvenated 50's diner with a bar smushed in, and a back patio sprung up. Very unfinished in a good way with a real OC vibe. Nonpretencious good fit being located next to the anti-mall. I like the soul food meets Cali beach scene vibe. read more
