Sadly, it was no where near as good as I remembered. Food 2/5: the food was so underwhelming. We asked for medium rare for the meat, they gave us well done. We shared a parillo Argentina, which came with bread, fries, and salad. The bread also came with some oily sauces, which I'm woefully underinformed on, but complemented the bread nicely. This place offers the real deal for Argentine cuisine. It's part of a small chain here in the SFV. I prefer the one in Northridge because it offers a more extensive menu, and is a tad more elegant, making for a pleasanter stay, instead of the "eat, pay, and get out", zero ambiance this place gives off. That said, though, the wait staff are very nice and helpful. There's a fun teeny-tiny grocery here with various imported Argentine treats. In Argentina, it's all about the meat. It tends towards dry, over-cooked, and tough, as opposed to tender, and juicy, and that's a kinda ingrained thing if you were born there. I wasn't, and there weren't enough other menu items that appealed to my husband and I to warrant going again. Tip: The branch on the southeast corner of Nordhoff and Corbin makes THE BEST empanadas. Creates an excellent entree for those times you find you're hosting a lunch or dinner and have no time to cook. Make a salad and have an assortment of enpanadas with it. There are none finer, and that includes that super-popular Cuban bakery, whose empanadas have excellent pastry, 'natch, but almost non-existent fillings. Bonus points: they freeze beautifully. Still memorable. I just was interested in three of them, the chicken, the spinach and the corn. They do have high end empanadas, angus beef, for example, they're not in the hot case they will have to be ordered at the register, and are more pricey. So how was it? If you compare Granada Hills, to Van Nuys, I would say that the empanadas taste exactly the same, from the ones that I have tried, that come out of the hot case. I got the Thursday special with merluza. I used to do a lot of traveling to Europe. I have not had a classic dinner like this since then! I've traveled on Woodley Avenue a lot in the last 25 years, but never saw Mercado Buenos Aires, which is on Devonshire Street very near the Woodley/Devonshire intersection. Looked like a great place to try when I noticed it recently. Wifey was up for trying it out this weekend and we were very pleased with the experience. The food was excellent! I had the Lomito Foccia sandwich and my wife had the Lomito Avocado sandwich. The filet mignon in our sandwiches was tender and yummy. Nice portions too, as we both took half of our sandwiches home for enjoying there. We also had an order of French fries, and they were plentiful and some of the best fries we've eaten, anywhere! They also have a nice little market with Argentine favorite baked goods, candy, cookies, and other food products to take home and eat. The waitress and other employees we encountered were all very nice and welcoming. The ambiance is not fancy, but we really liked the place and will now be regular customers. First time trying this location of Mercado Buenos Aires and it did not disappoint. The chimichurri alone is worth the visit--easily the most flavorful I've ever had. Bread came out soft and fluffy with a perfect crisp on the outside. Ordered the steak medium and it came out spot on--cooked to perfection and full of flavor. The compound butter on top had some solid herbs and seasoning that just brought it all together. We also tried the provoleta (grilled cheese), which was super crispy and rich--really good, but definitely something you share, not finish solo. Coffee was solid too. Not a coffee spot, but it did the job. Service was great, friendly and attentive. Parking was easy--located in a little plaza with plenty of spots. You can taste the quality in everything here. Food is always good here! That isn't my problem. I came with friend for dinner before watching a movie nearby. We have ourselves a two hour window to enjoy our meal. My friend arrived about 12 minutes before, he ordered 6 empanadas as appetizers. It took them a further 15 minutes to actually arrive. Ok cool cause they were good. One of the empanadas was wrong so we wanted to change it, took the waiter another 25 minutes to come back to put table. We had to tell another waiter about the mistake cause the other gentleman was too busy attending to other customers who showed up after us. Other tables got food before we were even asked if we were ready for our main meal. By then it's been a further 15 minutes of us just sitting there waiting. In all we were there for approximately 85 minutes to only be served empanadas. We had to get up and have our check closed because he never bothered to come back, but he did to other tables. I've been a faithful patron for over 10 years and never had we had such pathetic service. For my friend having had drove for over 45 minutes to dine here in the rain, this was an embarrassment of an experience. read more

We went to the other location first. So we thought we'd try this one. It is much smaller. I think I counted 11 tables inside and it was too cold to eat dinner outside. So we had to wait about 20 minutes on a Saturday night. I had forgotten to try the creamed spinach at the other location so I was excited to try it here. I came with my mom and good friend to get lunch on a Tuesday around 2:30pm. We walked in without a reservation and the place was not too full so we were able to get a booth inside right away. This is a cute and casual restaurant off the 405 which serves a variety of Argentinian food. He accommodated all our requests and was very attentive of our table. We did not order any drinks and then were given this deliciously fluffy baguette with salsa criolla and chimichurri on the side while we waited for our food to come. I tried -Spinach empanada: delicious! Baked empanada with a filling of spinach, egg, and a little bit of cheese. The pastry was perfectly crispy on the outside while holding a nice level of moisture on the inside. The filling was flavorful and generous. This is one of my favorites! -Ham and cheese empanada:Fried empanada which comes full of cheese and bits of ham. This one was amazing!!! I had not had a ham and cheese empanada for a while but this one hit the spot. The pastry had a nice buttery flavor, crispy crust, and was not oily at all. The filling with generous cheese provided a perfect savory and creamy balance. The bits of ham added an umami punch. I would have ordered 4 more of this had I had room! Delicious! - Honey mustard chicken salad: this salad was so filling and generously sized. It came with a lot of diced grilled chicken, fresh crispy lettuce, tomatoes, onions, avocado, Spanish rice (which added a wonderful texture and brought hints of cumin and tomato paste), and a really delightful honey mustard dressing. I ordered the dressing on the side since I was worried it would be too sweet and it was lighter than I expected! The portion was huge and I could not finish all of it but it was a very nice light option. - Alfajor: for dessert, my mom and I split a homemade alfajor. It was a little hard to cut at first because of the chocolate covering but once we cut it, it was delicious! This dense biscuit was filled with decadent dulce de leche and had chocolate sauce on the side. This may have been a little too dense and rich for my taste so I am happy I split it with someone else. My mom and friend had steak dishes which they liked. My friend got a parilla chica which came with skirt steak, ribs, chorizo etc and he got a side of creamed spinach instead of the fries. The portion was large and he took a lot of it home. My mom got the 6oz lomo with a side of salad. She said it was good steak but definitely not the best she has had. Overall, their food is good and prices are pretty fair for how much you get! The staff is super warm and patient, and the place is really chill (there were two girls sitting next to us who hung out for 2 hours eating a piece of cake, drinking coffee, and playing board games)-- they will not try to kick you out, especially if it's quiet which I really liked ! Next time I want to browse the imported product section they have a little better since I'm sure I could find some great additions to my kitchen pantry.
