It's a nice departure from regular yellow cheese Tex mex. they have some delicious authentic dishes like Cochinita Pibil or Pollo con mole. This was my first time at this restaurant. I love my Tex-Mex. I was disappointed. We weren't asked where we would like to be seated. So unknowingly we were seated at the tall cafe style table and bar chair. My friend she is 5'1". Uncomfortable seating. The staff did their job but nothing above and beyond. I ordered enchilades and rice. It was served cold. I waited to tell waiter but he was no where to be found. Rather than let food get colder, I ate it. Bet it would have been good hot. Chips were okay. Never bothered to refill chips or salsa. Her diet drink never got refilled either. Prices were reasonable. Probably won't return. So Hilda was our waitress and when she found out it was our first time eating here and that we are from Atlanta she brought us back a a handmade corn tortilla filled with delicious guacamole on the house. I ordered the Chile Relleno and it was superb. Lots of different flavors within the dish. Black beans, white rice a blend of cheese stuffed pepper in a very tasteful sauce topped with carnitas on top. 10/10 would get it again for sure. read more

Image one is the Carne Asada. Menu description is "wood-fired marinated steak, homemade sweet corn tamal, crema mexicana, charred salsa, queso fresco, black beans." The steak was good, pretty good. It wasn't really anything better than many other places I've had it (or similar style) like On The Border, Chili's, Matt's, Chuy's, etc. For today, it hit the spot because I was craving red meat that was properly cooked. The sweet corn tamal was pretty awesome. I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a side or a dessert. Either way, I could've eaten six, ten or even more. The beans were good too. I'm more of a refried bean kind of guy but these black beans didn't disappoint. Image two is the Herradura Salmon. Menu description is "tamarind-glazed scottish salmon, charred brussel sprouts, crushed piquin, chile guero-chayote puree." My wife had this dish. She really liked the salmon and brussel sprouts. I tasted the salmon and thought it was good but nothing overwhelming and exciting for my tastes. I'm not a huge brussel sprouts fan either but these were done well. Image three is Pastel de Chocolate. Menu description is "moist oaxacan dark chocolate cake with fresh corn ice cream, warm chocolate rum sauce." This dessert was damn near awesome! I could've eaten the entire thing myself but alas I had to share it with four other people. What could have made this awesome was being filled with warm chocolate sauce akin to those lava cake types. However, get this if you want dessert here. Image four is Pastel de Moras. Menu description is "skillet baked blueberry cake with mexican vanilla ice cream, blueberry drizzle." This dessert is passable. It looked and sounded way better than it tasted. The flavor could have been better and the cake was pretty soggy. It almost seemed like it was under cooked. None of us were fighting for the last bite of this dessert. Now onto the restaurant and service. We were served by a server-in-training and her trainer. She was very nice but wasn't fully informed on everything about the menu. Not a big deal. I know learning the menu takes time. She was very personable and what she didn't know, her trainer was more than welcome to "highly recommend one of his favorites" from the menu. The only problem we really had was the attentiveness to our table in the sense of drink refills. I'm a drinker. I don't drink alcohol but I do chug my Diet Coke like water. I like to have a refill pretty close to being almost done and DEFINITELY before I start having to chew on the ice! My other guests had to wait as well for their simple drinks of water and tea. This is unacceptable and I tend to base the server's tip on how well they keep 'the drink' flowing, at least partially. I'm also aware of how busy the restaurant is and allow some leeway. However, we were eating around 2 p.m. and the restaurant wasn't that busy at all. She still got a pretty good tip from me because that's the kind of patron I am. The only really negative thing that was bothersome was a about fifteen minutes before we left. A family, maybe multi-family, with young children sat in the booth next to us and then next to it. Their five kids sat in the booth next to us and were loud and obnoxious. They yelled, stood in the booth and reached across the table all while their parents just sat in the other booth. They were so loud sometimes that we could barely hear our own conversations at our table. If Meso Maya wants to be a higher-end restaurant like they seem to want to be, I would rein that shit in but not a single manager was around to proactively settle the little heathens. If we weren't leaving, I definitely would have said something to the management and parents. I felt like when I've been to the local Cici's and the parental figures there allow their little sh*ts to run around the restaurant like they're at a playground. Management doesn't want to say anything there because they'd probably get shot. Anyway... FINAL VERDICT: It's definitely worth a try. They have some variety on the menu and we will probably go back to try a few more dishes. I'm in no rush because I just wasn't overwhelmingly awed but it definitely has some respectable taste and flavors with the food that I could hit this place up again. read more

Oh my goodness!!! This was my first visit here and I had no idea what to expect. It was absolutely wonderful. Some of our group had lunch and some had brunch. Off the brunch menu, we had the Chirizo Migas which was amazing and the Mexican Toast (French Toast) with fruit and cinnamon sauce. Their queso was perfect. What a magical experience! This place is unlike any other Tex-Mex joint in Dallas -- because it's authentic Mexican food! We started off with the Queso Poblano and Chicharrones. Talk about a kick-ass beginning! The queso was good, but the chicharrones were even BETTER! Soooooo addictive. Everyone needs to try this. My fiancé had the Bistek Oaxaca and I had the Brisket Tacos. Both were delicious, but his was unforgettable! The rice, beans, and elote were delicious too. Not cliche and boring like other Tex-Mex restaurants -- theirs is unique and flavorful. I had the Del Mar enchiladas without cheese. They were served with no "jumbo lump crab meat" at all. I sent it back and it was served with a thin paste of what looked like dregs of crab. The shrimp had been reheated which made it tough. It was disgusting. Total waste of money. I recommended this place and brought my friends for dinner and won't do that again. read more

Went on a busy Friday night at 6. Got a spot for me and my friend right at the bar. No wait, no problem. The bartender quickly brought one of the cucumber margaritas. I had a Texas Martini once my dinner came. I ordered the ceviche and have been thinking about it ever since. It is the best ceviche I've had ... atleast recently. It's on the appetizer menu, but is plenty big, great to share (and I usually wouldn't agree to do this) but it's a must have - really flavorful. The price was really reasonable. The parking is in a shopping center next to a few other retail shops. It seems most of the cars are going to be fore people at Meso Maya. It was PACKED. read more

Went here last night for dinner. Sat at the bar first for a drink. The beer is served with a chilled glass which is nice. Bar tv location isn't great, with only two flat sceeens positioned at opposite ends of the u shaped bar. Friendly bartender. Two domestic 12 oz bottles was about 14 dollars- a little on the high end. Sat down at our table and informed waiter it was first time dining there. The gm then made a friendly greeting and offering of complementary guacamole appetizer. The guacamole was fresh and flavorful, and I was impressed by the gesture. I had heard the queso was outstanding- and it did not disappoint. Poblano peppers mixed with savory brisket comes served with fresh tortilla chips. I added some firery habenero salsa to give t more of a kick. The temperature of the queso was warm but not piping hot. I would have preferred it to be a little hotter, but maybe this is how they usually serve it. Our affable waiter recommend cohcinitia pitbil , a Yucatán pork mixed with rice and beans and habenero salsa. I went with It. It was excellent and I would definitely get it again. Lots of food. Took some home. My friend got the chicken tacos and stated they were very good. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience here. The hospitality and service was clearly above average. The food was tasty and reasonably priced (beer seemed a little high but oh well). The restaurant had ambiance and was clean , spacious, and busy for a Wednesday night. If your trying to eat at the bar and catch the game this may not be the ideal spot to do it. I will be back. read more

This is a dirty, poorly managed restaurant. I arrived solo on Saturday about 4:30 p.m. There were very few customers in the restaurant at that time. The bar counter had numerous dirty glasses and dishes on it--I had to wait for the bartender to clear a spot. Once I sat down I noticed dish tubs on the floor under the bar counter that were piled high; likely not cleared since lunch hour. The men's room was filthy. The floor was sticky. Numerous puddles of urine were under urinals/toilets. Trash baskets were full. A maintenance person came in, but instead of emptying the trash bins, he stomped them down, compacting the mess to avoid emptying a while longer. He did not mop or do anything about the mess on the floor. Back at the bar counter, it was difficult to get the attention of the bartenders. The service was lacking. The restaurant and bar were not busy until around the time I left, about 5:30 pm. With the highly unsanitary conditions in the front of the house, what would it be like in back of the house? read more

I thought I had ordered all vegetarian options for the family meal but I had read the menu incorrectly- they still fixed my order within minutes and gave us additional queso and guacamole (even though this mistake was definitely my fault). Easy to find location with plenty of parking. We were quickly seated and given a menu. The menu was big with many items that I had never heard of before. I asked our waiter for explanations but couldn't make out much of what he was saying. He was masked up with a heavy accent and I'm a little hard of hearing. Bad combo. I just took a shot in the dark and ordered. The food was delivered quickly. Refills came without asking. My pulled pork was really good on their corn tortillas but the beans on my plate were cold. The spice level of everything was perfect for me. I might go back but prob will give others places a go before I do. We have been to this location many times and have always enjoyed eating and drinking at the bar. Food is always good and service is usually good as well. Last night was the FIRST time in our life that we left ZERO tip. Sat at the bar and waited for someone to clean the last patrons glasses out of the way. Waited to the point we were getting ready to leave. Manager came behind the bar and cleaned it off once he realized they were not ours. He took our drink order and our dinner order. We had zero communication with the bartender. When our dinner came, my husband had to get up and get silverware and napkins off the table behind us (other patrons had to do the same). Bartender ignored us the whole time and continued to chat with coworkers constantly. We literally had to wave our hands at him to get us the check. He never checked on us to see if we wanted another drink, we were never asked if we wanted chips and salsa, really never said anything to us until he brought the check and that was "was your dinner ok?". I approached the host stand assured that I placed a reservation in advanced and then I'm told that they did not have my table, apparently I called and cancelled my reservation. To make it short they had confused me with another party which was a little inconvenient. I must say though that they quickly scrambled to get a table for me which I was happy about. There is a considerable and noticeable difference here compared to my usual Preston/Forest visits. I was head over heels excited about Meso Maya opening close to home. It makes me so sad from one location to another there is a two star+ difference for me. I have to say if they allowed half stars on Yelp, I may have strongly considered giving this location 2.5 stars-- GASP! First the service is much slower, and the servers are either ill or completely uninformed of the restaurant and menu items. My first visit here, I was told "we don't have salsa verde." WRONG, that is clearly stated on the menu. My next visit, I was served salsa verde at the table to eat with my chips and salsa. It was never refilled, and I was charged $3 for it. Totally understand being charged, but if you are going to charge a customer, please inform them especially when there is lack of consistency between locations. I always order salsa verde at the Preston/Forest location with no problems, they will refill it as many times as needed, and I am NEVER charged for it. Of our 7 dishes, two were completely wrong when delivered to our table, and a mysterious dish 8th dish they attempted to deliver to us. Secondly, Meso Maya restaurants are loud, louder than most restaurants. It can be difficult to hear the whole table if you are in a group of 4 or more. My first visit to this location was a completely dizzying experience-- servers were running around confused and disoriented, screaming patrons in the restaurant, and almost busting my head open on a table because of two children chasing each other tripped me. Definitely a busy place, and the parking lot is proof positive of that. My second visit, I chose to sit on the patio. It suited me much better this time because it seemed to be more relaxed. I think the day of the week (Monday) and the time contributed to that (about 8 pm). I've had the brisket tacos here which were very good, and I love the flavor of the brisket. Very tender and flavorful meat. Then I finally tried the mole poblano enchiladas that I hear everyone raving about. They were good, but I think as much as I try to love mole, it's just not for me. These two Lakewood experiences (10/15, for my mom's birthday, and 10/17) gave me a completely different view of Meso Maya. If I go back, I think I will drive the extra miles and stick to the more relaxed atmosphere the Preston/Forest location offers. read more

Great service from start to finish! The queso was delicious. I had the chicken enchiladas and they were so good and authentic. I also had the Avocado Margarita and it was so delicious!
