I've been wanting to try Meso Maya since it opened because I love Mexican food and finally got the chance this past Friday night. As someone who had been to Chic from Barcelona a few times, I cannot believe what they have done to this space. It's so open and inviting, a very comfortable atmosphere. We started off with the shrimp cocktail which was quite good. It is made with larger shrimp and served in a rich sauce with blue corn tortilla chips. For my entree, I had the Budin Azteca with chicken. It was delicious and the roasted tomatillo sauce had a nice little kick to it. I could totally see craving this in the colder weather. For dessert, my boyfriend wanted the Crepas con Cajeta and I didn't think I'd have any because I envisioned an overly sweet, heavy dessert. Wrong! It was so tasty and served with a fantastic homemade vanilla ice cream. I'm really looking forward to going back and exploring more of the menu. I loved the food a lot, but I want to go back and try some more before I make it a 5 star. Honestly though, everything was great. The Ceviche was delicious, great lime and cilantro taste without overpowering the seafood. Also got some of the Poblano Queso, which was different from what I was suspecting but still good. It was much more creamy and light than I thought it would be. The entrees were the highlight though. I got the pork shoulder, which was amazing and juicy. I didn't even need a knife, it just pulled it apart with my fork. It came with a habanero salsa which I loved. But despite how good that was, Brisket quesadilla was absolutely the best thing I ate that meal. I don't even know how to describe it, it was just so good. Finally for we had a blueberry dessert with ice cream. It was nice and light. Great way to finish things off. This place is new but I know it will do well. After a long day of work, I was starving and talked a coworker into some dinner. He suggested Meso Maya after we ran through the usual list. The interior of this place is beautiful! I was really surprised with the build out. It's quite spacious with really nice touches and decor. Chips and salsa were addictive. Our waitress was nice but we definitely had some small snafus. Wrong soda refill, inability to describe if any drink specials were available. Meh, you win some you lose some. I got the brisket enchiladas which I will fully disclose are not a picture worthy food. Visually, I didn't find it very appetizing but the flavor was pretty good. I liked the blue corn tortillas used and felt they held up better than other enchiladas I've had. My coworkers chicken salad looked fresh and enticing, as far as a salad can! I'll have to look into happy hour more since the bar looked really appealing! read more

Updating my review since management was able to fix the payment issue after several attempts. The waiter never apologized for the confusion when we returned. The food was decent but not exactly good enough that I would bother dealing with substandard or dishonest waiters again. First review : The food was okay and we really enjoyed the Pozole. However, at this point, management has not yet been able to fix the overcharges charged to us and we don't see ourselves returning to this establishment. MAKE SURE TO REVIEW THE ITEMIZED TABS BEFORE PAYING! My mom, myself, and my sister visited Meso Maya on Thursday, December 20th for lunch around 2 pm. My mom spoke very highly of the restaurant and had always had a wonderful experience. Her and I decided to share a plate. In total, all three of us ordered 2 enchilada plates, two cups of soup, queso blanco, a margarita, and 2 lemonades. My mom and I split the bill and each paid $35 plus tip. After paying the tab, we realized it seemed rather high for what we ordered and reviewed the itemized tab. We noticed that the waiter had charged us for 3 enchilada plates instead of the two we ordered. Note that they brought us our split up enchilada plate on two plates, one enchilada on each plate. The waiter showed no concern about the overcharge and DIDN'T EVEN OFFER TO FIX IT. The manager Omar (we think that's his name) stopped us as we were walking out obviously bothered. We explained what happened to him. He borrowed my mom's credit card and stated he reversed the $35 transaction and then recharged the correct amount of $22 to her credit card. It's now two days later and her bank account shows two transactions charged from the restaurant, one of $40 and a second of $27. Combined with the $40 I paid, we have now paid over $100 over a measly 2 enchilada plates. We called again today on Saturday and spoke to Bobby. He acknowledged that a refund wasn't made by Omar and that my mom's card was charged twice. We gave him her CC # for them to process the refund yet it hasn't shown up on her bank account yet. They explained that this takes some time, however at this point, the establishment has inconvenienced us greatly and caused us more headaches than an enjoyable experience. This mechanism of conducting business is unlawful, unjust, and unfair to customers. Make sure to check your bill before paying. read more

Went to dinner before a night out as a group of 4 and was taken care of by our server Alfredo. He was so attentive and extremely friendly to us. He made us feel real comfortable and made sure that our table was always clear since it was a smaller four top. He recommended a special margarita and entrees that did not disappoint! A really cool place with a great atmosphere and food to match. Cochinita Pibil is to die for. I have never had such tender meat. The Story : We went there within a couple of weeks of the opening. I had emailed the owner about reservations and veggie options and she said she would "take care of us". We arrived at a packed restaurant were told they don't take reservations. duh? Anyway I showed them the email I was sent by the owner and they called the owner over and she got us a table mighty quickly. Real nice of her. We ordered the Queso poblano and looked around to see if it was kosher to lick the bowl.. it wasnt :( They do have some veggie options like the Spinach enchilada. They also were gracious enough to make us a Veggie Quesedilla. However that was only because the owner said she would do so in her email to me. She later said the Chef doesnt lke to customize. The Mrs and Sister in law did go and thank the Chef later so hopefully we set a precedent for the rest of your veggie people. Great food, great environment. Cool place. Will be back. read more

Modern and welcoming and a definite departure from the typical kitschy Tex-Mex restaurant interior. There are no chotchkies here. Some of the best salsa in the metroplex. Roasted, rich, and fresh. Delicious. I nearly exploded from my uncontrollable consumption of the stuff. I had mixed feelings about my dish, the Budin Azteca de Camaron. The shrimp were cooked beautifully and the roasted tomatillo sauce did its best to bring the entree to life, but the layers and layers of cheese and tortillas, which the server described as Mexican lasagna, were just not my schtick. The wife, however, knocked one out of the park with her Brisket Enchiladas order. The tomato guajillo sauce was righteous! House margaritas were light, authentic, and fresh. No pre-made S&S mix in these; just all the tequila, lime, agave, and salt you need. I hear the Avocado Margarita won a "Best of" award in D Magazine. That will be my next order. Based on all of the decent reviews, I would like to give this place the benefit of the doubt. I showed up around 9pm which is about 30 minutes before they were going to close. We were seated immediately and served with some fresh chips and salsa. The salsa although spicy was probably some of the best I've had at a restaurant. After reading all the reviews I opted for the $20.00 Carne Asada. The meat had excellent flavor, but it was cooked to death!!! The waiter didn't ask me how I wanted it cooked, and I didn't tell him so maybe that was my fault. In addition to the meat having a beef jerky texture, the portion size was absolutely ridiculous. It gave "strip steak" a new meaning. I literally got three to four bites off of that steak. Not to mention although decent, the portion of black beans on my plate was laughable. Again, based on all the good reviews I'm going to chalk this one up and say that because it was near closing time, I got the short end of the stick. This restaurant does not feel like 99% of the "authentic" mexican restaurants that I'm use to going to. It has a trendy, upscale atmosphere and not a sombrero in sight. I had the Mango Iced Tea...nice. The tortilla chips were warm and appeared to be home made. The salsa...unbelievably unique flavor...almost had a tinge of licorice to it. I asked the server to make a recommendation between two dishes. The Coconut Salmon or the Budin Pollo. He said both were very good but if I wanted something with more flavor, to go with the Budin. This was an entirely new dish to me and I had no idea what to expect. It was amazing. The chicken was nicely shredded but not so much that it lost its texture. I took my boyfriend to Meso Maya for his birthday and we absolutely loved it! I did have to make a reservation, wait time is too long without it, but we were seated promptly. Our waitor asked if it was our first time and the manager promptly came over to introduce himself. He thanked us for stopping by and brought us complimentary guacamole tacos, such an amazing detail! The food was delicious! I ordered pozole and my boyfriend ordered the cochinita pibil, by which he was amazed. I also got the cucumber margarita which was really good!!!! I first visited this location in 2012. Wow! Excellent then, still excellent now. This location is always busy. Highly recommend their margaritas. They have an excellent tequila selection. First, I appreciate this location for accommodating our party last minute, due too their other location booking someone over our reservation that I had put in a month in advance. Second, when I had called the manager, "She" was not warming whatsoever. "She" accommodated us, but made it evident that we are calling last minute, for most of the call and I told her that I understood plenty of times. Never once did I get an warm feeling about being in their establishment. Third, the food was good. Definitely did not have a wide variety of food, but it was enjoyable. Fourth, the service was terrible. Christian was very rude too my parents and grandparents table. He was not warming and looked upset the whole time. I'm a server myself and the way he served their table was very rude and disrespectful. He told a person of my party, "to just try it and see if he liked it", I didn't like the tone and how he approached my family member about his plate. If he did not want to serve us, I would have rather had someone else apart of our joyous occasion. This is one of my favorite places to go out in Dallas, and we take friends and family here very often. We've recently driven from Allen just so we could take my parents. When you walk in, you are immediately greeted by an awesome aroma, which makes your tummy very happy you walked in. Not even a minute after that, they host/hostess greets you and (since we always make reservations) shows you right to your table. The atmosphere is very nice and inviting, making it easy to spend time here having great conversations and sharing a meal. The service is great. In addition to the quick seating, the servers are attentive and excellent about making sure you have plenty to drink (both water and from the bar). For drinks, my absolute favorite is the Serrano Berry Margarita. It is sweet and spicy and everything all at once. It is one of my favorite two mixed drinks to order in all of Dallas. After being seated, you are given chips and salsa. The salsa is the perfect amount of spicy for wimpy me. We also have a few appetizers we sometimes like to order. The queso fundido is one of my husbands favorites because it is something you to play with a little. I love the ceviche - the tart flavor with the avocado pieces to bring it all together. The guacamole is also a nice addition to the standard chips and dip. For the main course, I almost always order the Carne Asada. I don't know how I can explain it, but it is flavored to perfection, cooked extremely well, and very tasty. I also love the sweet corn tamale that accompanies this. Sometimes I order extra to take home for a meal later in the week. This dish is what we always recommend to friends, many of whom will ask us later if we can eat here again just because of this dish. Today may be the last time I come to this place. Went in for brunch with reservations at 11 am. I was early so when they said they weren't open yet it was no prob. I sat on the bench outside and waited til 11:02 am. ( and their menu still states brunch starts at 10 am) When I went in and asked to get a table by the window she seemed be put out and wasn't "sure if the area was ready". When I asked if they were going to open the patio up since it was a great 72 degrees outside I was blown off. When the waiter came over we asked if we could get something without cilantro, he said "nope". We finished our drinks, paid, and walked over to Dough for lunch. I used to love this place. We tried this place for the first time today for lunch with our friends and their two kids. Honestly, we would feel much better about it and rate it higher if the value were better. But it is so ridiculously overpriced that it's infuriating. The mango margarita was nice, but certainly not worth the double digits price tag for its size. Same thing for the Ensalada Mercado de Pollo--it's a basic iceberg salad that had two tiny pieces of bacon with some grilled chicken on top. Good, but $13?! We don't think so. The vegetable enchiladas felt likely the only 'fair value' dish because they were nicely cooked, tasted super fresh, and had a great sauce and beans. We split the bill with our friends, and it came to $75 total, which is ridiculous for lunch for what we got. This place isn't La Duni and shouldn't cost as much as it does, even if the decor is "fancier" than somewhere like Taco Diner. We have no desire to go again for future Dallas visits. read more

I liked that the waited made sure i was ordering the queso I wanted by asking a couple of questions. They quickly brought out chips and salsa. The salsa was good. The chips were amazing. Warm, crispy, and perfectly salted. I could have made a meal of the chips. For my lunch, I ordered ala carte. I got the Shrimp taco and chicken enchilada and a side of black beans.
