I really, really wanted to try Meso Maya after finding on the Dallas Eater list. Unfortunately none of my friends in Dallas wanted to join me! Their loss. After trying three separate times on my trips to Dallas I decided to venture out on my own after finding this Meso Maya location near my hotel. What a great choice it was! They start with a huge basket of chips and delicious salsa which I ate too much of, but I was really hungry after skipping lunch. I usually try to steer clear of upscale Mexican spots but I tried Meso Maya for lunch with a group of co-workers. Off the bat, the chips and salsa were excellent. I ordered the Budin Azteca with carne as it looked like an intriguing change of pace from the ubiquitous tacos and enchiladas. When it came out it wasn't quite what I had pictured in my mind (Yes, I should have tried to find a picture on Yelp). It was waaaay saucier than I had expected but no matter. The sauce had a good flavor, but I wanted it to be richer in depth. I could taste all the spices but it seemed like the base was tomato sauce and water rather than a more flavorful broth. The dish came with two squares consisting of layers of corn tortilla and cheese stacked together almost like a lasagna. These were by far the best things on the plate. The issues I had with the dish were the following: The "cubed filet" was not in uniform cubes but rather misshapen scraps of widely varying sizes which made me question the quality of the meat. One piece of meat was so tough and gristly that I had to spit it out. The other issue I had was the cookery of the potatoes and black beans. The potatoes were barely cooked through and too firm - they were small pieces and I still couldn't break them using the edge of my fork. As for the beans, some of them were cooked fine but others were underdone and had a hard, grainy interior. I'm not sure if my co-workers had the same issue but I saw many of them leave their bean sides unfinished. On the positive note, the service was attentive enough and the atmosphere was nice. I think my Budin could be a 4-star dish if it had been properly executed but I'd rate what I got as a disappointing 2.5-stars and wouldn't try ordering it again. read more

This was by far my most different experience at a Mexican restaurant. For starters, this is not tex mex! If that's what you're looking for, this isn't your place. That said, I went here for a team dinner, it was myself and 5 others. We had a reservation so we did not have to wait. Our waiter was kind and prompt. We were served chips & dip and ordered mango magaritas. I wasn't impressed with the margaritas, not sure if it was the tequila or the sangaria that was mixed with it.. Probably one of my worst margaritas. For our appetizer we ordered the queso poblano, which was amazing. I'd come back for that alone. It's full of cheese and we went as far as adding the brisket along with it. I ordered the mole poblano which was a chicken enchilada, with minimal cheese. The chicken was very flavorful, and I honestly ended up picking most of that out and eating it alone. The blue tortilla kind of threw me off. They have some sort of chocolate sauce that is on top of it, with a side of black beans and white rice. Overall, the dish was flavorful but wasn't what I was expecting. I would return to this restaurant but would try something different with more cheese. Also the customer service was great. Oh, and they don't have fajitas. :( read more

Having eaten at the location in downtown Dallas and really liking it I was excited to try this location much more local to me. Upon entering the atmosphere is inviting and the decor very on trend and very clean. Only a handful of people were there at the time we visited. Service was good and quick. Queso is probably one of my favorites. Our meals were just okay but considering the price I expected it to be better. I used the women's restroom and was thoroughly disgusted by what was piled in the corner of one stall - definitely need to add trash cans to each stall for feminine products. Dirty paper towels were all over the floor by the door. Restroom cleanliness is a dealbreaker for me. read more

I went during lunch and ordered the guacamole, and the soup and enchilada lunch special. Both were solid. I didn't enjoy my frozen house margarita because I couldn't detect the liquor, but my friends drink was delish. I would come again if I'm in the mood for Mexican. read more

I walked out of this place tonight. As I walked in I saw that not one person in the exposed kitchen was wearing a mask. Not were any of the waiters in sight. We were escorted to our table by a man who was also not wearing a mask. Very concerned I asked him very pointedly if he could assure that anyone who approached my table would be wearing a mask. He gave me a story that would have sounded great two months ago. Those who were vaccinated would not wear masks. The two employees who were unvaccinated would wear masks. I confronted him with the knowledge that their logic was out of date and now dangerous and it made his restaurant a super spreader location. He repeated the same nonsense and I told him his approach was insufficient and that we would eat somewhere else. The county wide mask order stands. Even if it doesn't I will be damned if I will sit there and be served COVID with my tacos. It is absolutely irresponsible to not allow/require your employees wear a mask in this current environment. It was a special occasion for my son. We walked in and saw that not one employee was wearing a mask. This is my best friend's favorite restaurant, but I always cringe a little when he says meet him there. I've tried several items and nothing is fantastic. The food here is just okay at best and way too salty. I couldn't even finish my enchiladas last night because of the saltiness. The guacamole had way too much salt as well. The service is always slow and inattentive. Nobody acknowledged me for at least five, maybe ten minutes when I arrived. And then drink refills were slow. As in my drink sat empty for long periods of time without anyone noticing. My tea gets refilled waaaay quicker at Luby's and those refills are FREE!! . I considered just going to the bar and ordering from the bartender directly a couple times. And my other friend's dinner got sent back TWICE. The first time it was explained what was wrong and sent back. Arrived a second time wrong as well. I told my friend his steak was going to be cold by the time they got his order correct! On a plus note, though....the atmosphere is fun and energetic. And apparently tons of other people disagree with my review because the place has been packed every time I've been there. So you should probably check it out. Just remember you're not at Luby's so don't expect someone standing behind you ready to provide a refill when your drink is half gone. read more

I had high hopes for Meso Maya. Maybe it was too high. I really wanted to like this place since there are several locations in DFW, and just assumed that the food would be fabulous. I visited Meso Maya with my co-workers as our company outing. We ordered ceviche as appetizer, which was just okay. I ordered steak as my entrée, and the meat was cooked well and had good flavor. We did have a good time, but nothing was really outstanding. Will I visit again? Not sure. If someone invites me to Meso Maya and pay for the meal, I would consider visiting again. read more

First off, I can't praise Louis enough for his excellent service he gave my husband and I. We were visiting Dallas on a business trip and he was our server. This was our first time visiting MesoMaya, and everything about our experience was positive. The food and drinks were exceptional but we wouldn't have had such a great time if it wasn't for Louis's professional skill set. He is by far the best server we have ever had. I will definitely be back! 4/11--Today I stopped in for a late lunch (3pm) because I had not been in a while. I won't ever be coming back. I can't stand when a restaurant is not consistent. For starters I had hair in my guacamole. They brought out some new guacamole but I was terrified so I picked all through it. I ordered one enchilada and double rice. The rice was hard either from not being probably cooked or sitting out all day. So now my stomach is in knots. I feel like I might have food poison. My sister and I were in town for a wedding and were looking for a great place to eat. We stumbled across this place after reading out it on a food blog - omgsdfwfood.com. The food was delicious. We started with the avocado margarita and it was delicious. I thought it would be a weird combination but was actually great. We ordered the guacamole and it was creamy and buttery. Delicious! We also had the chicharrones appetizer and that was probably my favorite dish of the night. I'd go back just for that. We both had enchiladas - I had the del mar and my sister tried the mole poblano. Both were excellent dishes. The restaurant was clean and had a great atmosphere. The bartenders and our waiter Carlos and the manager were friendly and attentive. The only hiccup was with the hostess stand. We checked in and they said it would be a 40 minute wait. We headed the bar. After an hour and 15 minutes I checked back and they told me I was next. We closed out the bar tab and went back to the hostess stand and waited an addition 15 minutes. When I checked in again, they were quite rude and told me I'd be sent a text when my table was ready. I explained that I understood the process, but had been waiting well past the original noted wait time. Turns out our name had fallen off the list somehow. We were then seated immediately and the manager came to check on us. This resulted in 2 free appetizers, which I was happy with. I'd go again and encourage you do try it! read more

I was pretty excited to try this restaurant after seeing all the great reviews, but I'm leaving a 3 star for Meso Maya. To preface this, most of our table are from California and have a type of Mexican food we like. The wait at 6:30 on a Saturday night was 25 minutes, so not bad at all! I was satisfied with the greeting and the staff at the door. A waiter immediately came to help us. The vibe and atmosphere of the restaurant is elegant. Service was excellent! I ordered the vegetable azteca. It was phenomenal. The sauce was perfect. My friend ordered the cochinita pibil. It was great. Now... for the not so good part, and why this restaurant only gets 3 stars. First... the ladies room was filthy. No toilet paper in either stall. Second... the elote wasn't anything special. I love elote so that was disappointing. Third... the guacamole was average. Fourth... the mole poblano enchiladas sauce was not very tasty... it wasn't bad, but my friend wouldn't order it again. Fifth...the tacos weren't hot enough. The shrimp taco was good. The carne taco... meh. The tortilla was fresh, but everything else didn't stand out. We came here for our group dinner while we were at our off-site department meeting. The food here was the highlight of our off-site. The drinks were good, the food was excellent and the service was outstanding. There were over 20 of us at dinner and dessert went off without a hitch. Visiting from North Carolina and decided to stop here from reviews. The food was good, we had the queso fundido, carne asada, the Serrano enchiladas, and the churros. I wish they would have been more descriptive with the menu. I ordered the Serrano enchiladas and they weren't spicy at all and instead had tons of lime juice in them. I can have small quantities of lime juice but I have allergic reactions to tons of lime juice in general. So...my whole face became numb that night and the next day. Couldn't feel my face or lips for probably the next 24 hrs. No where in the reviews nor on the menu did it say that the enchiladas would be loaded with lime juice. I mean it felt like I was sucking on a lime. I mean don't get me wrong, the dish tasted amazing but I wouldn't have ordered it if I knew it had that much lime juice. The carne asada has an amazing marinade, definitely a must try if you like flank steak. I would say the best item on the menu were the churros. The churros tasted like sugared donuts with their homemade ice cream. Their ice cream is a bit sweet but can't beat the dessert. Another tip is to have a drink if you wanna drink. A Mexican restaurant with no hot sauce. Really? I feel like Mexican food just isn't the same without hot sauce. Her food comes out and she just would not eat her tenders. It's dipped in like a bad tempura flour and the chicken was really tough. Also they're nugget sized. And no they don't have fries. The only option was rice. Okay I get what type of restaurant I'm in but 98% of other restaurants out there at least have fries and apples for the kids. Then my Pollo Serrano Enchiladas come out. The rice is dry and flavorless and the beans are mushy slop. The flour tortilla tasted as if it was stale. It was a struggle to cut it with a knife. The chicken tasted like chicken chunks out of a can. I couldn't believe I didn't like any part of this meal other than the salsa and guacamole. When my food comes out, a guy in a blue shirt walks to the table next to me with a complimentary appetizer for then because it was their first time there. I was never even asked that.. I felt like I did overpay because of everything else, though everything wasn't that expensive. It I guess shame on me this time. I was here for lunch with my wife. Our food was wonderful and the service was even better. This was our second time here but I must not have done a review on our first visit. So, both experiences here were excellent. This is not your typical Mexican or TexMex restaurant. If you are looking for that you might be disappointed.
