We came to Meso Maya a few weeks ago for brunch after hearing about their awesome service. Must say, our waitress was certainly friendly and knowledgeable, but the food was a bit much. Here's why... Maybe I'm that kind of guy who looks at food in a different light. I'm not out for "volume," but rather, quality, freshness, and flavors of the food overall. I like the subtle flavors of foods that help to distinguish each bite (like each musician in a symphony), rather than one group that drowns out the other with overwhelming power or punch. To put it another way, Meso Maya certainly has a nice variety of food, but their sauces are almost exhausting to the palate, and makes it difficult to truly distinguish the actual flavors and contents of the dish. Alex was our waitress, and was absolutely enthusiastic about educating us on what Meso Maya (M.M.) was all about. She quickly made some personal suggestions, discussed the labor-intensive work that went into some of their Mole sauces, and the fact that M.M. made their "own corn tortillas." So, for starters, we opted for a large Guacamole. Within a few minutes, we were served a nice heaping bowl of photo-perfect guacamole. Adorned with some finely julienned radish (new in my book), it was fresh and well balanced with bits of tomato, onion, jalapeño, and cilantro. Chips and their salsa were also served alongside our guac. However, we love guacamole with hot corn tortillas, so we asked the lady (who served our guacamole) if we could have some corn tortillas. She looked a bit puzzled, said something about a "small order," and returned within a few minutes with piping hot hand-made corn tortillas. They were a nice accompaniment for the guacamole, but had a softer-than-usual feel to them. They almost felt like flour tortillas in consistency, and lacked a more hearty and decipherable taste of standard corn tortillas, Still, they were quite good, and went well with our appetizer. For her, an order of the "Budin Azteca Camaron(es)." An oblong stack of tortillas in casserole-style with layers of cheese throughout, topped with nicely cooked shrimp, and resting in a pool of tomatillo sauce. For me, I opted for the "Enchiladas Del Mar," that were stuffed with nicely cooked cooked shrimp, crab meat, and cheeses, also resting in a pool of tomatillo sauce. Both had a nice presentation overall, but the sauce (amount) was a bit much. Simply put, it was overbearing and saturating. I love tomatillo sauce, and make it at home every so often. It is supposed to have a bit of a "sour" taste (acidic), but should never be too overpowering (at least not to me). Unfortunately, M.M.'s version of this sauce was simply that -- overpowering and overwhelming, so much so, that it was difficult to discern the individual ingredients of the Budin or Enchiladas, especially with the subtle flavors of crab meat and shrimp - both of which were lost somewhere within. I managed to scrape away most of the sauce from my enchiladas and finish them. Her Budin was a bit too rich from the sauce and cheeses, but the managed to harvest the shrimp off the top (which tasted quite good on their own). At the end, we asked to samples of some of the various sauces, and our waitress was quick to accomodate us. We both really enjoyed the pipian rojo sauce (pumpkin), and the oaxacan mole, but the rest were a bit too rich and overpowering. They were the kind of sauces that would be nice to lightly dress over an entree, but not to ladle-on. Perhaps it's in the making of the sauces? I was told that one of the moles had approximately "52 different ingredients." Now, I'm no expert on mole, have only made it a handful of times, but I'd say that the average number of ingredients is 12-15 depending on the type. At 52, I think someone is probably overdoing it a bit, and it tastes like it. I'm not saying Meso Maya is bad, no...not at all. But it could certainly use some reconsideration for their preparation. The food is overtly rich, and a bit too overwhelming to my palate. The food gets lost entirely in the sauce in the process, and is a real shame because I think it could be so much better. Oh, and those corn tortillas for our guacamole? We were charged $3.00 for 4 tortillas. Not cool. May or may not be back. Will definitely rethink our orders if we do. read more

I have been to this establishment two times in my life already with my sister and father, and for someone who is not a big fan of Mexican food, this place absolutely blows away all my expectations! Again, not a Mexican food lover, but for this place I make a special exception! First off, their QUESO!!! I only know two restaurants with really delicious queso appetizers in my entire life, and this place is one of them! Truly, if you are looking for really good, AUTHENTIC Mexican food, then "Meso Maya Comida y Copas" is the place to be! My husband and I love coming to this restaurant! We are always greeted at the door and the staff is always so enthusiastic about being there. We have been there for birthday parties, group meetings & casual dining. All experiences have always been great and if there is ever an issue it is resolved immediately. The food is always delicious and consistent. My favorite is the variety of cocktails and the amazing appetizers! The outdoor patio is great too and I love the covered patio as well. Well, they closed my beloved downtown location, and this one is even farther west, so I probably won't get over here much. But awhile back I was over here for some work related garbage, and managed to drop in one night. I've got a windy, TLDR kinda review on the page for the closed one, so read that one if you want because I ain't going into it again, but I will give you the cliff notes version. Great food, great drinks, and currently, still the best chips and salsa I know of at the moment. I've always sat the bar, got great, friendly service. The high end margy's I get are really good, they're serious drinks, served right in a cocktail glass instead of a large glass full of mix like the margy's they serve the rookie poser customers. Apps are good, entree's are good, every one of them I've had. Soups are good. Meso is my place to go right now if I'm looking for more than greasy tex mex. read more

I love this place so much! Have enjoyed the Dallas locations many times the Fort Worth location does not disappoint. Decided to branch out and try something different- I usually get the mole enchiladas, which are amazing- so I tried the Budin Azteca - layers of homemade corn tortillas with cheese covered with sautés vegetables in a creamy tomatillo sauce . It was really good and definitely enough for two people!! My son and daughter each had their usual- brisket and veggie enchiladas respectively, and both delicious as always. Usually the service is slow, already been couple of times that I get a table and wait up to 20 minutes for service or at least for a server to come to the table. The food it's ok and sometimes not at the right temperature, definitely the drinks are great! Would recommend to get a spot at the bar, some appetizers and will get a better experience. read more

We met a friend from out of state here at Meso Maya. We started with the ceviche and the Chicharone. Both tasty. Then we ate the carne asada. It was very delicious, juicy and tender. Best avocado margarita! As a Californian, I appreciated this. The wait staff is very friendly and kind. On our first time there, they gave us a sample of their guacamole and homemade tortillas. We have been in to eat 4 times now, brunch on Sunday twice and late lunch once and dinner once. This place has been amazing every time. We love to come in on the slower times and days, (I feel this is the best advice for goin out to eat anywhere.) The service is great! The food always hot. One busy brunch we came with friends and one order was wrong but quickly fixed! And a manager delivered the food. They have there stuff together here. The drinks are amazing. We love the novella cocktail. It's spicy and sweet. Everything here is good. We love the grilled plantains. They have Mexican cream and queso fresco on them. Black beans, white rice. The tortillas are house made fresh every day! Their sauces are to die for and each one is different in flavour. Honestly my girlfriend and I were pretty pumped to try this place based on the reviews but here we are in a chik-fil-a drive thru because everything we got was terrible. I ordered carne asada, which was both cold and so over seasoned that it had an 1/8" layer of seasoning on both sides, plus the server gave me the wrong kind of tortillas. My girlfriend got the chile relleno but we were (up)charged for and were brought the short rib relleno. The actual poblano was soggy and cold. The short rib was plain ole nasty and the rice was very bland. It also didn't help that it took roughly 15 minutes to get a refill every time. For $75 before tip, it wasn't remotely worth it considering we both left hungry. For full transparency, the black beans, salsa, and the queso were alright. read more

I would definitely recommend giving this place a chance. I heard great things but was a little skeptical after reading some of the yelp reviews. As the name suggests the food is more central Mexican not tex-mex, so go with appropriate expectations. They give free chips and salsa for the table. The chips seemed like they were made in house and the salsa had a nice, smoky flavor but was a tad salty. We got the mole enchiladas and salmon coco, both of which were delicious. The server let me try the mole beforehand to make sure I'd like it, which was kind. The salmon was not over-salted or over cooked and the coconut rice was flavorful. I would also recommend the chocolate cake with corn ice cream for dessert! The cake might be a little on the sweet side for some but I have a sweet tooth so I loved it. I wish I remembered his name so I could give him a shout-out but our server today was great! Here for lunch on a Tuesday. We were greeted with a smile upon our entrance. The server was very pleasant and as it was our first time here, provided information regarding the restaurant and food. The chips and salsa were very good. The salsa was different as it had a smokey flavor. We both liked the salsa. We ordered the Budin Azteca with Carne. I liked the red chile guajillo sauce, but my friend thought it had too much acid. The beef had good flavor, but several pieces in mine and a few pieces of my friends had gristle. It took another 15 minutes for him to bring my beer (minus the lime I'd asked for) and their refills. One of the glasses hadn't been washed and had lipstick on it. Fast forward 20 minutes with no contact from our server. We finally asked another staff member to notify him that we were waiting to order dinner. After a while, someone brought out 3 entrees but had the wrong table and only one entree ended up being ours. A few minutes later, someone brought a 2nd entree. We made the drive over to Mezo Maya on Hulen in Fort Worth from Arlington. We were promptly greeted by the host, and then seated us on the patio. Maria was our server. She took our drink order and was back quickly with our drinks and chips. Maria was knowledgeable about the menu and house specialties. She took our order and our food was prepared very quickly. It was amazing. Maria was friendly and had the perfect balance of being aware when something was needed without hovering over our table. We will be returning soon with our friends! We each had a mimosa (yummy) and Bloody Mary (also super yummy with the tajin) Shared the queso-flavorful and spicy He had the Serrano Enchiladas. Omg. The sauce is so citrusy and flavorful, there was a good amount of meat inside and the tortillas were super fresh. Beans and rice were yummy.
