No Mews is good Mews We ate here before seeing a show at the Theater By the Sea. This place is aMAZEing, I mean it was a maze to get to the main tavern. We sat at the pizza bar by mistake until they told us how to get to the main bar. I guess it's all about which door you go in. No big deal, just added on to my unpleasant visit. We ordered a beer and an appetizer each before our entrees, and even before the apps came the manager came up and asked us to cash out because of a bartender change. Really? She couldn't live without her $4.00? I usually offer to do that if I over hear it happening but to be asked to do it is classless in my opinion, Anyways.. that irked me. Then we decided on their pizza and ordered them and waited and waited had another beer waiting and waiting. Now I'm watching my watch and all the time cushion I'd built in evaporate. Eventually the bartender came over and explained something must of happened with the system and our order never went in. (no fault of hers of course) She said she put it in again and was sorry. My point is, she walked by us 100 times while we were waiting and it never dawned on her we've been waiting forever. Lack of job skills.. We said sorry we have to make curtain call and left without any substantial meal. By the end of the show we were famished and at 11:30 pm around there we were reduced to McDonalds. Yuck. I probably won't be back and will find a different place when we go to the theater next time. read more

I've easily been here between 5-10 times over the past year or two, and I live easily 40 minutes away. I'd heard such good things for such a long time. It has totally lived up to my expectation. I've literally even kayaked there and left the boat by the water to go in and eat. I've had plenty of flights, the nachos are bomb, the mac and cheese, pizza, pulled pork, sandwiches, and more. It's always all been good. The service can sometimes be a little slow, and I've always had to wait at least 15-20 minutes, but its overall worth it. So many different atmospheres to sit in, it's a great place. Can't wait to go back! read more

A mecca for on-tap beer and scotch/wiskey selection. There is something that will appeal to anyone and the selection does rotate, both based on season and based on bringing in new beers to try. They still do have some of the old favorites (Sam Adams), as well as more rare selections. My boyfriend and I like to get a rack (4 7oz beers) to be able to try a few things. Dining/drinking options give you a traditional beer tavern, a sitdown dining room, and a Celtic pub. (I miss the martini bar....please bring it back!) The wood-oven pizza has a thin crust that I haven't been able to replicate at home -- likely the heat of the oven. I've had nearly every pizza on the menu and, depending on your mood, you can't really go wrong. The burgers are big and filling. My go-to is the blue cheese burger wtih mushrooms. Or the buffalo wing burger with blue cheese crumbles....maybe there's a pattern there? If none of the above appeals, the menu is quite large and diverse. It was usually always busy around dinner time and into the late night. There are no reservations. Parking can be tight -- but there's street parking too. Mews Tavern has 69 beers on tap at all times. This alone calls for multiple stars. There are some canoes, some kayaks, and some trees. I am not sure why, but I dig. It appears to be one third Irish pub, one third pizzeria, one third Mexican cantina, and somehow succeeds at all three. I came here for lunch but it seems like they have plenty of fun themed nights. A good friend of my boyfriend's went to URI and introduced him to the Mews, which he then introduced to me. We love trying different types of beer, and this place is perfect for that! You can pick a sampler of 4 beers from a list of 69. Although I must say that it's not too uncommon for them to tell me they don't have one of the beers I've chosen, which is always a bummer and forces you to quickly choose a replacement beer on the spot. The food is pretty good. I'd say your best bet is to go with the pizza, calzones, or burgers. It's kind of pricey for anything else. We love the location, the atmosphere, and the food... but most of all, we love the beer! read more

I really dig this place. The atmosphere is great especially for laid back south RI'ers. The bar area is really unique and fun with dollar bills stapled all of the ceiling and tagged with peoples names and messages. The dining room has a huge tree in the middle of it making it a bit whimsical. I just love the feel of this place. Aside from that, they have a great beer selection and a menu with funny dish names. Just started coming here recently with my fiance but for her its been an old watering hole since she went to URI around here. Great beer selection where they offer flights of beer to sample. The food is good with a great selection of pizzas. Service is good sometimes the waitresses are a bit spacey...meaning that we would order some beers and comes back with nothing in her hands and asks if we want something...but maybe she had an off night. The atmosphere is very unique where there are different levels and sectioned off bar and eating areas. Would definitely come here with whoever feels the need to enjoy good food, great beer selection and all around good time! read more

I'd like to speak with the manager please. No really! I want to know how he juggles 5 different bars and two different restaurants filled with every kind of person on a saturday night? I was amazed! The service was great and the options were many. Almost too many. There really isn't much I can say that hasn't already been said. I had the Cuban sandwich and my date had the Shepherds pie, both of which were quite good and both of which are oft screwed up in many other restaurants. I would go again if it wasn't an hour away. This place is OK, just OK. Most of the stars come from the massive beer selection, beer tasting racks and their fajitas. Everything else is two star worthy. The decor is not bad, the general feel of the place isn't bad, most of the dining area is wide open and the decor is interesting to look at. It's usually pretty loud so it's not a bad place to bring kids and large parties. My major complaint is the lack in food quality; flavorless sauces, frozen ingredients, overcooked pasta, really just nothing all that great, except the fajitas. Go just for the fajitas and and beer and you won't be disappointed, don't expect to be impressed with anything else. read more

First and foremost, DO NOT use the app to see wait times and a place to put your name in. We checked and it said "no wait right now" and there was an hour wait when we got there. Ugh. But that was only for the restaurant area. Luckily, as we walked through the tavern area which is first come, first served, a booth became available. Good selection of beers (would be excellent, but they were out of a bunch - we'll give them the benefit of the doubt that this would not be the case in mid summer) with a lot of different types and different breweries. Food was above average, generous portions. Three of us had burgers, all different, we liked them all. Burgers seem to be the specialty. This is really a 2 1/2 star rating bit I'll give them a break on past experiences. Now I may be showing my age but I remember when you parked in front of the Mews, where that room with the tree is now and I remember when upstairs was an apartment. Over the years they've expanded and then expanded some more, this has not always been for the better. You get a full array of beers to select from and your gonna need em to wash down the lousy food. Unfortunately the food has really declined a lot. For a place that serves pretty standard bar food, they need to do better!! read more

We used the online app to order, it said our food would be ready in 30 minutes. When we got there we clicked the link that was texted to us to let them know we were there. After about 10 minutes someone came to our car and asked our name. She told us there was an issue with them receiving the orders so it will be a little longer. After waiting 1 hour and 20 minutes they called and asked us to go in and pick it up. Our food was cold. I understand this is a different process for them but they need to figure out a better system. The Mews Tavern is a casual dining establishment with a certain flare for turning the obvious into the interesting. They have, beer pizza, burgers, wings and other great pub delicacies that they manage to package in a fun atmosphere. The interior is deceptively larger, even cavernous compared to what you can see from the street view. The decoration is is rustic, if not a bit kitchy. * 69 Beers on tap. Imports and micro brews. Very reasonable prices on pints. When you are out of beer, you flip the license plate sign to NEED BEER from HAVE BEER. It works. * While we did not have the pizza we got to watch the brick oven pies being made while we waited. There was a 25 minute wait for a table on a Monday night. Every pie I saw looked delicious, it was sort of torture having to wait while these were flying by. * Burgers were what we were after and what we got. The basic hamburger, but they have some nice add-ons. I got the G.F.Y.S. Burger. It had bacon cheddar cheese and jalapenos. The "F" stands for what you think it does. They have a turkey burger. * They had straight cut, slightly thick fries, that were better than the curly version. The Onion rings are thick, good but not stellar. * Salads were decent, I had a side ceasar that was tasty and larger than I expected. * We didn't get to the wings this trip, we will be back. * Get dessert: The Turtle Cheesecake was the best. * Wide-screen TVs all over we watched the Sox from our table. * Service was acceptable, we had a few items they forgot but those did not show up on the bill. The environment is fairly chaotic, and large parties are the norm not the exception. Summary: A fun place with reasonable prices. From my observation of the locals, this is the sort of place your mom and dad take you to when you are a kid and you keep coming back with your friends after you have left the nest. I've been coming to the Mews for years and I have always found it to be pretty consistent. The place has a relaxed atmosphere, diverse group of patrons and both a food and beer menu that offer plenty of different options. I would give this place 5 stars alone for their great beer selection. They rotate some great choices in on draft and if you want to maximize your tasting opportunity I highly recommend ordering a flight. When it comes to food I've had some hit or miss dishes. My favorite by far are their nachos...baked to melted delicious perfection. At the same time I've also tried both their version of poutine and the Flyin Hawaiian pizza both of which were good but not exactly the best I've ever had. On weekends (especially when URI is in session) this place gets packed pretty easily so expect a little bit of a wait and for service to possibly be a little bit slower than normal. In my visits the servers have been friendly and for the most part rather attentive. Overall, the Mews is a good choice if you love craft beer and are looking for a bite to eat. read more

It's the best place to go get a beer on tap in RI if you love to try something new. Being in a college town the prices are reasonable and they have large portions for hungry students/sports fans. I have always had a great experience when eating at mews. I love the atmosphere and the staff. Also, they always change up the menu and have a huge array of mixed drinks and beer. The only downfall I think is the prices. Some of the items on the menus are extremely over priced. read more

In a place like Rhode Island, there are many great restaurants to choose from. Narrow It down to really good restaurants with a bar-like atmosphere, you get none... until Mews came in. If you eat there, the eating space is so big, it should have its own country! The main room is centered around a huge tree that has taken the tradition of being carved by couples and crowds of all ages. But in the chance that you take your meal to go, or prefer your couch to the bright lights of the bar, their food tastes just as good! While many of the people you may ask will say to not get sandwiches for takeout, because they may be soggy, I say that you don't always have to get sandwiches! The Mews Tavern has a variety of foods, ranging from mac and cheese for the big guys, to the savory salads for the vegetarian. On a good note, the Mews is a must have for a reunion with the bros or girlfriends, or to watch the big game. Is it possible to give 10 stars? I have a serious Mews problem as in I'm there at least once a week. Absolutely get the Muggle Pie. If your a vegetarian they have plenty of build your own toppings. Their homemade balsamic dressing is unlike any I've tried. Literally have never had a bad experience out of the 30+ time I've been there. If there is a wait (there usually is) head upstairs to the bar on the second floor (ID required to get in) or check out the money room. Our first time at the Mews! Greeted immediately and brought to a table. Lauren, our waitress, was there very quickly. Great selection of beers which made my husband very happy. Awesome buffalo chicken dip, it was so good! My husband loved the bbq chicken and I had the fish and chips. Would definitely order them again. Lauren was very pleasant and offered suggestions. Mews is so lucky to have her, she was genuine and really good at what she does. Dan, the manager, checked in and wanted feedback as a first time customer. He shared some history about the restaurant. Great restaurant for just about any type of food. I had the grillhouse pub burger, which was a solid 8.6/10. The mew's signature sauce on it was excellent and the bacon just made the taste even better. The curly fries were very good, I just wish I wasn't so full when I wanted to eat them from the burger and wings I had previously. The wings I had were the honey hot flavor and they were pretty good, just wish there was more of a balance between the sweet and spicy as the buffalo seemed to over power. A side note and maybe the biggest yet still very minuscule downside was the buffalo chicken sandwich my girlfriend ate. It was still very good, but there wasn't really too much buffalo sauce on it, really just a light drizzle. All in all was a great experience, just wish I was helped by the host to find the "NO CRAP ON TAP" shirt. read more

It has been since Covid since we came to the Mews....was always good food....lots of people and an active bar. URI rules here. We came back to try it again last night after an antique show we did. Beer....Rise...was of course good. Staff attention was fine and the place was busy but not jammed (sunday night 7pm) . What was not good was the degradation in the quality of the wings....way too much breading and hard as a rock....no flavor other than the slight sweetness....no chicken flavor. Something has happened....perhaps they are buying them pre-breaded and not paying attention to detail any more. My girlfriend had a salmon burger...which sounded wonderful but it exploded on her plate and was overwhelmed by a sweet overpowering tartar like sauce. Disapointing. My 14 dollar wedge salad was fine but 14 bucks? My chili was little more than some chunks of overcooked beef in a tomato sauce. Was not happy with the meal. Everything else was fine. The Mews - locals will tell you it's not what it used to be. This was where locals would come to talk, enjoy inexpensive, simple pub food and a variety of craft brews and regular live music. The live music is long since gone (or very infrequent), the food and beer is expensive. Many pubby menu favorites are gone. There are continual reconfigurations of the seating plan designed to crowd more people in and rake in more dollars. The music in the downstairs 'dollar bar' trends toward pop and rap, and most nights is so loud you can't hear the person next to you. The Mews has a long beer list and is centrally located, but that's about it, in my opinion. If you're looking for what the Mews used to be, try the Charlestown Rathskeller. read more

This is an old college favorite, and continues to be so when I make my travels down to South County on occasion. It's perfect if you're a group of URI kids looking for a solid meal in place of the dining hall, or a good place to gather with friends for drinks, food and fun. There is usually a wait, so expect that...they do have a bar area to wait in and grab something. The main dining area is really eclectic and is known for the big "tree" in the middle with somewhat odd decor hanging from the ceiling. I love that you can get a beer tasting flight with the dozens and dozens of beer on tap, I've actually never gotten a mixed drink here because the beer is so good. In terms of food, you'll find the menu is pretty large and diverse. My go-to here is usually wings, burgers and sweet potato fries. The SP Fries I still find to be the best I've had...perhaps because it was at the Mews that I had my first try of them (...just realized that was 15 years ago...wow) Whether you're a family, big group of friends, going on a casual date night, or want to hit a bar with some buddies, Mews is perfect! The Mews holds special spot in my heart. Call it nostalgia or what have you. But this place is just darn awesome. It's a large place that brings in a descent crowd during peak hours. There are several rooms with funky decor, solid wood, yellow lighting and different seating options for whatever you are in for. Whether its a few drinks with friends, a bite to eat with family or both! Every time I come here is a new experience and I feel that there is always a room I have yet to dine or have a couple of beers in. I'm not the biggest of beer drinkers, but I have to say there is a wide selection of beers that is bound to tickle your fancy. Even if you are a wimpy beer drinker like me. Although they are pretty big on the beer they have some awesome bartenders that can create any mixed drink you want. Even if they have never heard of it! Just tell them what you want and they will make it! I had an out-of-state friend request a signature (I say this with the utmost endearment) masshole drink and the bartender made it perfectly!
