Atmosphere was great! You have 3 different options for seating. We chose the dining room which still had TV's to be able to watch sports. The menu covers anything you could possibly desire. I had the Ruben with a side salad and ranch.... I've never had such tender pastrami before. The side salad was very fresh and the ranch was delicious. My husband had grind burger with a side salad. The burger was so flavorful and tender. He had honey mustard dressing which is house made. It had a little zing to it which made it even more delicious. For and App we had the loaded tots... the house made IPA cheese sauce was a little thick and heavy for me. But overall they were great! For dessert we had the brownie sundae. OMG!!! The brownie is house made gluten free dark chocolate. It comes with black raspberry ice cream ( we had vanilla instead) chocolate sauce, walnuts, whipped cream and a cherry on top. It was a perfect ending to a delicious dinner! I do recommend to be hungry when you go as the portions are perfect... the service kicked ass... The food was amazing.... the atmosphere was great with a very diverse crowd. We arrived at 10pm and it was still packed with people with more coming in. If the waves of Narragansett Bay swept up and slammed together all the cool upholstery, delicious food, and tasty beer kegs in the area, this would be the result. The building itself is just awesome. The main floor is centered around a giant tree, the top floor is a celtic-style billiards pub, and the bottom floor is a tavern covered in autographed dollar bills (see the pics). It's essentially Rhode Island's Disneyland of food and drink. The food menu is sublime. My fare of choice rotates between the eclectic burgers, massive calzones, and the ever-famous lobster mac and cheese. Though I've never tasted it myself, the pizzas here are served up on a nice platter and quite drool-inducing as well. The famous '69 Beers on Tap' selection includes 69 of the most deliciously ever-adapting brews. I almost always spend more time looking at the beer menu than the food menu. There's also a great wine and scotch selection if you're more into sipping with the pinky out. Not a bad thing to say about this place and my mere mortal words don't do most of it justice. Probably through getting WASTED and stuff... Anyways at some point in the night I thought it would be a charming idea to start sourcing the bartenders' tips from all the holla holla dolla dolla bills taped to the ceiling and walls. I mean: WHY NOT?! Right?! Right? And I'm not sure but I may have gotten kicked out, and my ex didn't think my antics were so funny anymore... Neither of us got laid that night. He cringed, I sulked. There was some lame after party and that's all I remember. Fast forward nine years! Ok cool, RHODY FARM FRESH BURGER - Grass Fed too?! Excellent. I'm stoked. WOOD FIRED PIZZAS?! Really?! I had vaguely remembered getting a delicious spinach and bacon salad years back, but this... this... this was a menu I could roll with. Legit! Supreme! They're catching on to the locavore movement and bringing us happy meat made from free range cows. I'm feelin it... Beer selection is ace. Especially if you like IPAs, and Belgian brew - wow, they even have Delerium Tremens. My Favorite. Lots of the beers come in 7-9% alc content, so, watch it. Pizzas were thick and too chewy and the cheese was plentiful and bland. So that sucked. I was sad we ordered two of them: I really did't want to eat them. I could barely muster a slice, and the buzz was already there, AND I'm a pizza-holic. So yeah - we ordered the basic one, and then some other kind loaded with sausage - blech. I ordered my roady burger medium rare. If you like your burgers medium rare, just order them rare. Mine came brown and dry and way cooked through. Always better to be able to just cook a burger a little more than throw one away. I ate it, but it was sad. Sweet potato fries = no flavor. My friend got the Thai Peanut Salad and was disgusted by it. Especially when a carrot slither accidentally fell on her arm... It seems like there are only two reactions to the words "Mews Tavern." Either you love it, or you've never heard of it. Seriously, I'm not sure what kind of Jonestown, Heaven's Gate, Apple Store cult they're running down there - but I've never met a single Rhode Islander that's ever been to Mews that wasn't constantly telling me about how it's the best bar in the universe. Mews is largely a college bar with a typical bar menu and a decent number of beers on tap. I think this is the source of it's allure to Mews partisans. Many of them have fond memories of Mews because its where they went to drink in college, and confuse that with it being an objectively good bar. Also, I think Mews got on the whole tons of beer offerings train early, so for a long time if you were a beer lover it was one of the better places to go in RI. However, now that so many other bars have gone that route, Mews isn't necessarily that special. I'm not saying that Mews is bad. It's a good bar. If I were a URI student I would love it. If I lived in the area I might go there occasionally. It's even worth taking a trip down there every now and then to visit friends in the area of just to go somewhere different. But if, like me, you've been hearing that Mews is the Holy Grail of pubs from your friends - just understand the context and then everything will make so much more sense. read more

The girlfriend tells me that my 100th review is a milestone and needs to be treated as such. So what better way to celebrate a Yelp milestone than by reviewing one of my old favorites that has somehow escaped being reviewed? Reading some of the recent reviews it seems as if the Mews has fallen victim to the old joke "No one ever goes there anymore because it's always so crowded". As a man who hates a crowded establishment I know why you look negatively upon a place that makes you wait an hour to be seated so let me give you some advice on how to have a great evening and how to beat the crowds. When my friends hit the Mews we aim for a late lunch/early dinner. We are always immediately seated when we arrive at 3 or 4. After thoroughly enjoying our meals and brews we pick up a six pack and go for an evening trip to the beach. Doing it that way, you avoid the crowds at the beach too! I love a place with a big beer selection. These days more and more places are offering a wide selection of quality beer so the Mews isn't unique, but still, 69 beers is 69 beers. Try a flight of 6 mini-beers, order something new, or go with one of your old favorites. Two of my friends claim that the gizmo pizza is the best pizza they've ever tasted. I'm not sure that I agree, but their pizza is still pretty damn good. And while I "only" think it's very good, knowing that there are at least two guys out there who think it's the best they've ever had has to count for something. The subject of calzones, on the other hand, is a different story. Their calzones are the best that I've ever had. The pink panther is my favorite but their other offerings never fail. The Mews has its faults. You'll have to wait longer than you want to. You'll have to pay an extra buck or two than an item is actually worth. But the bottom line is that I've never gone there and left disappointed. I've never been there and failed to have a good time. I always leave happy and satisfied. read more

I've been several times and have never been impressed. If you must... Go here for the beer- get a burger if you have to eat. Don't expect the food to be good Atmosphere: It is always crowded- families and large groups of college age students flock to this place. It is often a long wait. I suppose it is so busy because it is one of the few "big" non-chain restaurants around. NOT because the food is great. If you're a small group I recommend you go to the tavern side of the restaurant. When I went with two other people the wait for dining was 40 minutes, we walked right into the Tavern and chose our seat. We waited 20 minutes before the server took our order, then another 40 minutes before our food came out. Don't order anything from the pizza or calzone menu that includes chicken- it is always dry and tastes like freezer. Thoroughly unimpressed with the "gourmet" pizza. A wood-fired pizza should have a nice crust and should look like it was wood-fired. My pizza came out with a pale crust and could have easily been just cooked/reheated in a regular oven. The toppings were gross- the chicken as I mentioned was dry and I'm not sure what they were going for with the Jamaican Jerk Chicken- it had no flavor (besides freezer flavor) I ate half of a piece and sent it home with my brother. I've also gotten the lobster mac = awful. Very little lobster, no real flavor - I ate the few pieces of lobster and 2 bites of mac and was grossed out. Convinced I'd just ordered bad items, I went back to Mews yesterday I got the Pink Panther calzone- inside came had a handful of shell pasta in what tasted like a jarred Alfredo sauce (with a hint of tomato)- rather than penne with pink vodka sauce. The prosciutto could have easily been some cheap chopped deli ham with no flavor & again, the chicken (same frozen probably precooked chicken breast) was dry and flavorless. The Idea was great! Here is what the Mews is: It's a pub. You get great beer, that's what makes the Mews stick out on the map. And you get pub food. Now I've eaten in many pubs, across the world (literally) and for fresh American mixed cultural foods, the Mews gets it done. I would not say it's very expensive (Have you eaten at Spain?) I also wouldn't say it's the cheapest. The place is popular with many, local, transplants, even the college crowd. You will find a wait at times, but often it's only 5-10 minutes as they find a table in the place. We were told there was a wait last time I went, but they suggest the Irish pub would have tables... sat down in one minute and the same food, restaurant, etc. Seating is wooden booths so conversation is ok, even with the noise level of a big place like it is. There aren't many open seating tables so for large groups, this can be problematic. The place touts itself for the beers but also the fact that it's a sports bar, so ambiance is more road house than upscale. Don't come expecting the Rembrandt's on the wall, but the decor is fun (a big tree growing out of one area) canoes, posters, that kind of thing. I am a foodie, I like it good, fresh and well prepared and presented. When we have friends in, this is one of the places we take them. Don't let the other reviews throw you off. And despite someone saying something about board of health, the reality is that EVERY restaurant will have a board of health review and will often have complaints. This place has had many good clean reviews for many years and is an quite amazing restaurant for it's kitchy, eclectic bar atmosphere. So, go, enjoy and drink a Blue Moon or something new and interesting and remember: It's a BAR. Not for the kiddies (It's a bar), it's not going to have the best food on the planet (It's a bar) and it's not going to be big wide tables with white table cloth: It's a BAR!!! read more

Mew's Tavern is apparently a staple of South County - the place where everyone goes to hang out, drink, and have a good meal. And this place did a pretty good job of this. First, their beer selection: impressive, and the one my partner tried was apparently very good. The waitress was knowledgeable - a must with 69 beers on tap! - and that went a long way in the drink department. The food is bar food - admittedly, very good bar food. Wings, nachos, and anything else you could expect is there. We had a good dinner, but what bothered us was the slow service. It took far too long to get the meals after our appetizer, to the point where we were sitting there, bored. The restaurant is extremely big and easy to get lost in (believe it or not!). Once you sit down, make sure you know where the nearest bathroom is, or else you may never find your table again! Finally, the parking lot is simply ridiculous. Not enough spaces, and the traffic flow is a nightmare. The place gets 3 stars for now because of the slow service and decent food. I would like to go back when it is not as busy. Perhaps we will get sit in a less abandoned part of the restaurant and receive our food in a more timely fashion. There is certainly potential, though. read more

Oh the amount I love this place. Mews is great for a sit down dinner, drinks in the money room or one of the many event nights they have during the week. My favorite thing on the menu is the Buffalo Chicken Dip, it is seriously out of this world. My favorite drink is the blueberry pomegranate margarita, so tasty. The beer selection is also very great. I used to come the the Mews in the early nineties. At that time it was just the tavern side and a great dive that served better than expected food. It has since become a destination for people that are used to chain food. Sure, they have a great beer selection and one of the best Scotch offerings in New England but this does not justify a forty minute wait for food that is only slightly better than Applebees and service that sucks. The Mews is one of the more solid establishments in the Wakefield area. While many have come and gone, the mews is a URI area mainstay. The MEWS is a bar first and a restaurant second, but both good. Like most really popular places, it's best to visit the Mews Tavern during the week. The food will be much faster and no wait for a table. I'd especially recommend sitting at a table in the bar area. This is where the real atmosphere is found. I regularly go on Monday nights, with several restaurants in the area closed for the day. The menu at Mews is enormous. Some of the food is just ok, but here are some winners: Nachos! Every good bar has to have them. These are piled high and heavy on the cheese and sour cream. Don't bother to get chicken or beef, it doesn't add much value here. Steak Fajitas. The plate comes out sizzling and soon everyone within 5 feet will be going home smelling like delicious sirloin tips. You won't find any thin strips of beef here, but huge chunks of meat, heavy on the flavor with seared onions and peppers. You will have to ask for more tortillas; there's just too much food. Shepherd's Pie. A homestyle classic that will remind you of home. It comes in a wide shallow baking dish for lots of crispy edges. On the downside, I would avoid the fish tacos. It's like baked cod with soft tacos on the side. Flavorless and Odd. The strength of the Mews is its beer selection. Focused almost completely on draft beer, the selection has changes periodically. New menu, I get it. Times Change, market customers change. But as I've said before, and has clearly been voiced by other reviews, why can the menu items that seemed so popular? My most previous visit was a Saturday night; we arrived around 7:50. Shockingly, there was no wait. NO WAIT ON A SATURDAY AT 750. That says something. There was a large sign saying that the upstairs pub was Mostly part of the dining room now. This is incredibly disappointing. I used to count on getting a table up there knowing that it was 21+ and was first Come first serve. I truly don't get what your doing here. Sure, your still getting seats at a table BUT there's a good chance the families you sit there and drink( we all Know that's where money is made). So we had our dinner. It seems as though there has been some turnover in staff as the service the last 2 times has been incredibly slow. We did get out app rather fast HOWEVER one person got their meal (boneless wings that were Ordered as a meal) with the appetizer. No apology or any resolution offered. After our app we waited 45 min for our dinner to arrive. Most ordered wings or calzones which seem to be the only thing they haven't ruined. I ordered a special pizza with Gorgonzola, pork belly, roasted reds and some other toppings. The pizza was Smothered with Gorgonzola and was quite overbearing. A few crumbles of Gorgonzola would have been nice But the massive amounts killed The other flavors. It's very difficult to see mews make big changes. I've been here twice now and I wouldn't hesitate to go back. It's been solid both times. My husband is happy with the draft list and I've been happy with the cocktails I've gotten. They serves mostly pub food but it's well done. So far I've tried the Tot-poutine, the fried pickles, the nachos, the Mexi-turkey burger and the buffalo chicken sandwich. No complaints. It's huge, with a lot of seating, but the first time we went was during off hours and we still had a bit of a wait. I did not realize that the Mews had restructured their menu and my heart was broken to learn they no longer had my all time favorite lobsta mac n cheese. i settled for the shrimp mac n cheese; however, just didn't compare... portion was smaller and lacked the flavor i came to love. i completely understand re branding and going for a "made from scratch" menu. My chicken parmesan calzone was amazing, probably one of the best I've ever had. The atmosphere was great- you really can't beat the feel of this place. I got a little lost coming in the wrong entrance though (come up the stairs near the back parking lot!). Huge drink menu with a great beer selection. Pretty much nothing bad to say. Okay, so I should feel guilty about indulging in a big, fat burger and beer for a weekday lunch, but since I rode my bike instead of driving I decided to cut myself some slack. We started at the bike path in West Kingston, and by the time we arrived in Wakefield we were HUNGRY. M suggested we go to Mews Tavern, and I jumped on it. Nobody ever has to twist my arm to go to a tavern, especially one that has 69 beers on tap ALL THE TIME. The menu is large and covers a lot of ground; lots of good sounding items here. M started with a Coke, but (not surprisingly) I indulged in a Flying Dog Doggie Style Ale. :-) We ordered a burger (with smoked Gouda, apple bacon & BBQ) and a Thai chicken wrap to share. Delicious! I took a trip down to South County with the sister for her birthday and she really wanted to go to this place. I had never even been to Wakefield much less the Mews, but I will be back! There are 3 or 4 different sections of the complex--it's all built in a big old barn, and we ended up eating in the downstairs tavern area. The atmosphere is pretty excellent, a highlight being a ceiling covered in one dollar bills with messages written on them. We estimated based on looking at a square foot and counting, that there is about 15,000 dollars stapled to the ceiling. If you are a burgler with a lot of time on your hands, cut me in, you heard it from me. The beer menu is pretty damn amazing. Really wide selection. One of my friends who is a regular commented that she has tried to find a couple selections on the menu in liquor stores and other restaurants but has only found them here. For starters, I really enjoyed the calamari, which was just slightly battered and extremely tasty. I had one of their burgers and I will be hard pressed to try something different next time I go. Now brace yourself, this may come as a shock... but I don't flock to Mews for the beer. *gasp!* Sure the beer selection is great, in fact they have 69 constantly rotating taps, but for me that's just a bonus. What I'm really dreaming about while driving down that never-ending stretch of Route 4 into Wakefield is the Firehouse Calzone. I'm fairly confident this calzone will be my undoing! I don't know what it is about this delicious doughy pocket that makes it far superior to any other buffalo chicken calzone I've ever had. Maybe it's the dough. Maybe it's the combination of buffalo sauce, pepperoni and pepperoncini rings. Maybe they lace the entire thing in crack. I don't know. What I do know, what really separates this calzone apart from it's inferior counterparts, for me at least, is the use of grilled chicken over fried chicken. Don't get me wrong, fried chicken tenders covered in buffalo sauce do have a place, but not in my calzone. The service here can vary, the prices are a tad inflated due to the proximity to URI and the wait time can be borderline ridiculous Friday/Saturday nights. However, with all of that being said, once that Firehouse Calzone is placed in front of me, all of that goes out the window for I have reached buffalo calzone nirvana and nothing else matters. This place is more than just a good place to go because there is nowhere else to go in Wakefield but it isn't worth more than one trip from providence. If you are a good New Englander, meaning you find variety overwhelming and hate good beer, then stay away from Mews Tavern. Don't be fooled by the 69 beers on tap, this isn't only a "drink a beer bar." Of course it is a great place for a beer with nearly all general types of beer represented and then some. Surprisingly, though, they manage to hold nearly as much liquor as they do beer. That menu at your table is not for food, it is an endless list of liquor varieties. The atmosphere is comfortable for almost anyone but certainly not terribly hip. The price is right though, with many quality beers under $5.00 Mew's is a great place to go if you are in the area, and worth the trip if you are craving that one hard to find beer or just feel the need to have 69 different beers instead of the 69 Budweiser's you usually down in a night. read more

It's always ridiculously loud - music is blasting, 10 TVs playing 10 different channels, and of course people yelling to try to hear each other. If you're going for dinner on a Friday or Saturday night, plan on waiting at least an hour before you're seated. It's much less crazy during the week- which makes the experience much more enjoyable. They have 3 bars and a restaurant. The main bar is where happy hour happens and a fun place to hang out with some booths and tables. The restaurant is cool with a tree in the middle and separate enough from the bar area to make it family friendly. There's a small bar in the restaurant area that's good if you like things a little more quiet. Upstairs they have an area that's set up more like a martini bar or lounge. Often it's pretty empty up there, so if you go with a bunch of friends it kind of feels like your own VIP room. They have 69 beers on tap and great specials all the time. There's no better happy hour in the area. They have different free happy hour food daily, but the best time to go is when they serve their awesome pizza. They have a solid food menu with good quality overall even if it is a little overpriced. The most popular night is definitely their monthly pint night when you get a free pint glass when you order a pint of that month's beer. read more

My one lament is they seem to have switched the fried chicken as of late and I would love to see well breaded, crispy chicken make a return! Never disappoints! It's not often you can find a place that serves Mac and cheese, quesadillas, pizza, and southern bbq and seems to do a good job with all of them.
