What caught my attention about this place was that many people are saying that Mexico Tipico is better than El Farolito, so I came to try it myself. They have a huge menu here with so many options to choose from which is already a plus compared to El Faro. I decided to get the carne asada regular burrito with a side of chips. The rice they put in the burrito is very moist, drenched in flavor. I can tell their chips are made fresh here bc of the different texture. Also to mention, their green creamy salsa here is bomb!!! As a burrito-lover and a frequent jet-setter to the Mission District, how the heck did I miss this place? Obviously, this is a very tiny restaurant with an occupancy of maybe 20 patrons the most. And this place can easily be missed if you are driving. But the food and the friendly hospitality from the workers are very welcoming. For lunch, I had my usual grilled steak burrito. For a reasonable $9.00, I get a choice of cooked meat, rice, beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, cilantro, melted cheese and grilled onions in a white flour tortilla. Not many places offer the grilled onions in the silver bullet. But it is a difference maker. The chips from here is from the Mi Rancho company. And the chips are lightly-salted with a tasty crunch. My probable next visit, I will definitely get the nachos. Beer is automatic with my burrito. But since I was working, I had to settle with a bottle of Jarrito fruit punch flavor for $3.00. Menudo is served on the weekends and seems to be a very popular dish from here. That will also be on my bucket-list on my next visit. Plus with the recent cold weather, it wouldn't also be a bad choice either. This outer-part of the Mission district is the family part. The workers treat me like part of the family. Arrived for early lunch at about 11:00am. Parking was easy to find, the dining room was sparsely populated. A server clocked in while I was eating. It is true--the lengua here has a depth of beefiness Taq' Guads does not have. It has a more velvety mouthfeel...melting like a meaty terrine, and it exudes a collagen rich nectar that has you licking your lips and fingers. I chose the Super Burrito. Good, but the other ingredients were simply distractions from the lengua. Each time I bit into a knot of chunked lengua, I collided with a moment of euphoria. On retrospect, the other reviewers were absolutely correct-- the regular burrito would showcase the lengua far better. The salsas were also a notch up in authenticity. Somehow, the chilies and herbs were edgier and had greater contrast. I was practically drinking the creamy avocado enriched salsa verde and I liked blending the salsa roja with the bright green tomatillo salsa. They serve a tortilla chip here that is puffy--I prefer the translucent thin variety. The large TV might have been tuned to Telemundo? A football (soccer to America) match was going that had the attention of just about every guest in the room. Watching the man behind the counter craft each order with immense pride was a great fun. He often hung back to watch us devour our food with a satisfied grin--almost like being fed by family. All the staff were attentive and uber friendly--they glance at you periodically as they moved about the restaurant to see if you need anything. They were very patient with me and eager to answer my questions. The place is alive with Spanish speakers with broad economic diversity. I chose to speak English the entire time I was there. By the time my meal was ending, I half expected to walk out to a dusty litter lined-street and white painted tree trunks in Mexico. I am looking forward to my return. When I do, I shall have to order a taco trio of the other meats--chorizo, carnitas and tripas just to see how they stack up. ADDENDUM 6/19/2016--the trio of tacos was educational. The chorizo is the typical, red tinted greasy tangy mess that is satisfying as it is messy. The Carnitas is good with moist chunky bits of caramelized flesh. The Tripas is actually very good with crunchy crackling bits and creamy clean interiors--no barnyard after flavors. I would suggest that you ask for the salsa on the side as the salsa is distracting for all three meats. A spritz of lime would have done it. At the end of the day, the lengua reigns supreme here. read more

I didn't think it would happen. I didn't think I'd give 5 stars to another taqueria on mission street. So far, that's been reserved only for La Taqueria. But life can, & will, surprise you. Being dissatisfied w Taqueria Guadalajara every time, I opted to try Tipico. It seemed, from my Yelp friends, that by my taking this adventurous risk, I might be rewarded w some straight up unbelievably fresh & delicious tacos. And rewarded I was. My fish tacos were positively 5 stars. The fish was fresh, tender, full of flavor, & cooked to perfection. Just the right amount of dressing. Enough to add moisture & flavor, without overpowering the tacos. Too much would kill the whole thing. They nailed it. And the lettuce? If you told me they had just picked the lettuce from a garden in the back & shredded it 2 minutes before they filled my order, I'd totally believe it. These tacos only reinforced my confusion as to why Guadalajara is so highly rated. My man ordered the carne asada burrito. He loved & inhaled it accordingly. I did get 2 bites, & they were delicious. There was a kick in the sauce, the steak was tender, & it was full of flavor. The chips, however, are completely forgettable. As are the salsas. But the food? Convincing Jamie W. to go to the Excelsior for Mexican is no small feat since he is a creature of habit, but when I saw the reviews for the weekend menudo here, I became determined to drive over there and give it a try. This stretch of Mission is a bit dicey even at around 9PM, but I was lucky to find a parking space just a few yards away. We entered to see the yellow and orange place abuzz with activity. It appears to be a favorite with locals since most of the tables were filled. I spotted one table and told Jamie to sit there to stake a claim while I ordered our food. They have a long photo menu along the wall that was kinda hard to read from my vantage point. Jamie decided on the $7.95 Bistek Ranchero, which was slices of grilled beef mixed with onions and potatoes topped with their special ranchero sauce. It came with rice and refried beans topped with queso fresco (see photo). It was pretty tasty for a hearty appetite, especially since it came with a half-dozen corn tortillas in a plastic bin. As for me, give me the $6.50 bowl of Menudo, prepared traditionally with tripe and beef stomach meat...mmm-mmm (rubbing my protuding belly). It takes hours to simmer, and they added some chili paste to give it a rich red color. It comes with all sorts of spices on the side - dried oregano and crushed red chili peppers - along with a wedge of lime, chopped onions and chopped cilantro (see photos). Dump it all into the red broth and you have the perfect late-night treat, hangover be damned. The ambiance is quite lively with cute little girls in pink outfits playing next to us (see photo) as a group of slackers chow down at a nearby table. A return trip for that menudo is certainly warranted. FOOD - 4 stars...the menudo is quite something here AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...cheap tables with buckling floors but a lot of good people-watching here SERVICE - 3.5 stars...very nice and they refilled our chips basket without us asking TOTAL - 4 stars...menudo is such tripe and doesn't have anything to do with Ricky Martin read more

Not going to lie, it's hard for me, as someone not from San Francisco, looking for a place that has chilaquiles verdes, because my mom always makes me some at home, but I'm glad to have finally found a place. Always wanted to try this place because of the reviews of the carnitas. I happened to be passing by and saw a parking spot open up so i was like why not. Line was a little long but the cashier ended up handling everyone while answering phones expeditiously. She was all about business. I ordered a carnitas super burrito and my son ordered a carne asada super burrito. Wait was a long while a little over 15 minutes. It got a little aggravating seeing other people that were behind me getting their orders. While waiting i noticed tables needed busing and the little salsa bar needed to be refilled. Tortilla chips were complimentary with the order. I asked for my carnitas to be extra crispy which i saw them attempt to do. As soon as i received the order we left. So carnitas burrito was alright, the texture was good, wasn't as crisp as i wanted, tasted bland. Burrito was a good size. The carne asada burrito was a little better. good size and flavor was great. Got the cravings for Mexican cuisine during halftime of the Lions/Cowboys game. Started driving down Mission Street, knowing there would be several options to choose from. Lo and behold, there was parking right in front of this restaurant, so we went in. The desire was always to get enchiladas, but I eyeballed the fish tacos on the menu as well, and at a reasonable price - $4 per taco! Ended up getting both, and was not disappointed! The service was very friendly, professional, and the cooks were really hustling to get the orders out. The manager / cashier was very thorough, going through all the motions of offering the various options with the entrees. With the restaurant full, we still got our food in less than 15 minutes. Food was ridiculously delicious! Perfect balance of spiciness and savory, and still piping hot through the 15 minute drive home. Good place to grab a quesadilla or burrito if you are in the Excelsior District! The place is somewhat small so if you are looking for seating I would suggest you get here before lunch time. Once lunch time rolls around this place can get packed rather quickly. The menu is good. A nice mixed selection of your usual items. They also include chips and salsa along with your order which I am starting to realize is not common in all Mexican restaurants. Because this place gets so busy you may find yourself waiting for awhile for your food. Not sure if they take over the phone orders but expect to wait for a bit. When I was there they only had 2 cooks at the time working so just be patient and watch the TV. I paid cash but I believe that they accept credit/debit card as well. I food was good once I finally sat down. I had ordered a carnitas burrito and it was cool. It seemed a bit dry even though there was a mix of guacamole, cheese, and sour cream. I personally love this place and hope it never goes out of business but the last 2 visits have me very worried about coming back. We ordered a few burritos and a couple of months ago my kids threw up violently after an hour of eating and he threw up on his bed, carpet, floor, toys, everything. It was bad. Wish I could post pictures but I was too busy cleaning. We have not ordered a burrito since that time but my kids love this place. So after a couple months we ordered again. The same kid again got sick and had diahrea and threw up. My wife also got sick. They both ate the same burrito. Not sure if its safe to eat again from here. Good food, orders usually come out wrong and it's only discovered once at home (partially my fault). Today I ordered 2 bean and rice burritos for my daughters plus my own burrito. Upon getting home I saw only one bean rice burrito and my own and figured they didn't charge me for the second. I split the burrito for my children and it only had rice, no beans.
