I've gone here twice, the second time not realizing it was this place, and both times it sucked. The second time cemented this place in my mind as not worth anything. Me and my gf went here on a Sunday to try and get some pozole as we heard this place was good. We ordered and specifically mentioned "no feet or anything besides meat and hominy." We got our pozole with not 1, not 2, but 3 foot bones in each bowl. They also had PIG EARS IN THE POZOLE. I've had hundreds of bowls of pozole in my life and I have never gotten one with ears in it. I took the ears and feet out and was left with a bowl of minuscule meat that was all super fatty. Not only that, the broth was completely tasteless. I had to add extra onion and chili peppers to give it any kind of taste. We finished as fast as we could so we could leave. What really made this place awful was, unfortunately, the other customers. It was Sunday morning and apparently every family in the world was there. There were babies full-on screaming in the restaurant and running back and forth bumping into people and almost making the waitress drop dishes. All the kids were super misbehaved and neither the parents nor employees were doing anything about it. It felt like a day care. I know it's not the biz fault that there are shitty kids in the place, but the biz can address this if it's bothering other customers, which it definitely was. Way too much screaming and it was nonstop. One of the worst eating experiences I've had in a while. Will never go back. read more

As I was waiting for my order, someone wandered in and asked everyone there for spare change. Don't come here for ambiance. The menu includes nachos, tortas, burritos ($4.90 for a regular, your choice of meat), soups (popular with the locals), platillos, enchiladas, beer and Mexican beverages. They have a salsa bar with three kinds of salsa. The one that looks like salsa fresca with onions, tomatoes, jalapenos, and cilantro is very spicy, fresh and flavorful. I ordered two tacos ($2.35 each) and received a basket of free corn tortilla chips. These were thick, crispy, sweet and fresh. The tacos (two small corn tortillas) were covered with meat, salsa, onions and finely shredded cilantro. Simple and fresh, the way I like them. The tortillas were a little harder and chewier than I'm used to. I could use more cilantro and onion but maybe they had some at the salsa bar. The meats are superb and the salsas are excellent. * Lengua taco: Possibly the most tender lengua chunks I have ever encountered, I was afraid they would fall apart if I poked them too hard with a fork. This is probably one of my favorite burrito go-to spots that I've lost track of how many times I've been here! It's more flavorful than Guadalajara & has a better meat to rice ratio than El Farolito. - Lengua Burrito: Very tender, lots of flavors, & not too much rice yet still very filling. I usually eat half and save the other half for later. - Quesadilla Suiza de Carne Asada: very crispy, flavorful, & lots of cheesy goodness! - Alambre the Res (grilled beef with bacon, peppers, & onions): I ordered this since I overheard someone say it was his favorite thing to order here. It was very greasy & salty plus you can see the pool of bacon oil. Not for me, there's plenty other items on the menu that's more appetizing to me. It's usually packed but not too hard to find a seat since people don't stay too long. Just very efficient eating while catching a game on tv. There's sometimes a bit of a wait so call in your to-go order. If you're doing takeout, don't worry yourself about getting salsa. The lady gives you 1 red salsa & 1 green salsa from the refrigerator. The green tomatillo sauce is really good. I normally ask that they switch out my red sauce for the green one. I've yet to try out the Menudo & Pozole which are only available on the weekends. I've tried a lot of the taquerias on Mission St. (and there are a lot) but this one is my favourite; yes even better than El Farolito. This place has the best burrito and the best quesadilla in SF: Super burrito (carne asada) with everything on it. Super quesadilla (chicken) with everything on it. Mexico Tipico also has the consistency down. I've been here probably a dozen or so times and every time the burrito or quesadilla turns out being just as good as the last time I was here. After ordering it does take some time to get your meal but it's always fresh, hot, and worth the wait. You can eat the free chips and salsa while you are waiting. read more

To celebrate National Taco Day (I didn't make that up) last Sunday 10/4, I went to one of my favorite taquerias (I also like Taqueria Cancun). This place is only a couple of years old, it replaced popular Taqueria La Altena. LOVE the complimentary house made tortilla chips when dining here. Really GOOD chips, much better than what u get at most other places. They have a salsa bar with many choices (fresh chopped salsa, green, red, etc.). But if u place your order to go, they give u "regular" store bought tortilla chips instead. The menu is VERY extensive - tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tostadas, platos, alambres (skewers), tortas (sandwiches), etc. and they often have specials like nopales (cactus), pozole, etc. hand written on a whiteboard. For dessert sometimes they have a choco flan (2 layers: top half is flan, bottom half is chocolate cake). There's a large variety of meat choices: carne asada, carnitas, al pastor, chile verde, grilled chicken, stewed chicken, lengua (beef tongue), cabeza (mix of beef head, ears, tongue), sesos (cow brains), buche (pork stomach), etc. Note that they use Mexican crema (a type of rich & sweet heavy cream), instead of the sour cream found at other places. I like traditional tacos, so I ordered lengua & sesos. I also like their fish ceviche tostada. Delicious!! Plus a cup of cool melon aguas fresca. Cheap, good food, and open late. Ah, the less popular and less busy Mexican option on Mission in the Excelsior. There's Guadalajara AND Farolito's a few blocks down so in contrast, this place hides in the shadows.. I've been a frequent customer at Guadalajara for a few years now and I didn't really even know about this place (or care to know about it..) I happened to be doing some Yelp research as my friend wanted Mexican food near his place, and I found that I had bookmarked Tipico a while ago. I bookmarked this place to try the menudo but that's only available on weekends.. GUESS I'LL HAVE TO COME BACK. I opted for the al pastor burrito instead so I could compare it with Guadalajara's. ** COMPARED TO GUADALAJARA ** Venue: smaller, and gives kinda the same gritty, casual restaurant vibe (but not dirty, by any means). Seating shouldn't be too difficult as many people just scarf their food down and bounce. Salsas: Self-serve and pretty standard. All seems to be home-made and the spicy salsas DEFINITELY have a kick. I like-y. Guadalajara's green sauce is bomb though and nothing can compare to that... they don't have a similar sauce here :( Chips *free w/ order: They seem to be house-fried (not hot ) - crispy and on the thicker side. SO FREAKIN ADDICTING. Tastes more flour based than corn based (probably why it's so addicting).. not oily on the fingers. Wait time: Seems longer than Guadalajara. Waited like 15 minutes for my burrito. SO HUNGRY. At least they give you chips though :) Burrito: In a nutshell: delicious, not too much rice, KIND of soggy and not warm to the touch (the sour cream/guac makes it feel a bit cold, actually) - but the taste factor makes up for the last 2 things. LOOKED a bit small but it was a beast. FULL of filling and not too much rice (don't you hate it when you pay for a burrito and all you get is rice?!) Even distribution of filling. A bit soggy for my liking though (I think it's b/c they put the pico de gallo in it already) and you definitely don't need to add any salsa to it as it's flavorful enough. Super flavorful and cooked well but doesn't feel heavy. Tastes more 'tomatoey' than Guadalajara. I don't remember what my friend got, but it was basically a chicken + rice + beans dish which came with tortillas (and they give you a plastic cover thing so the tortillas stay warm!). Meat is definitely on the oilier side, but MAN, was it tender and flavorful.... shitton of food for $10. Glad I came here! Mexico Tipico in San Francisco came out and catered a farewell party for a former co-worker in our Burlingame office earlier this year. Staff were so happy with the menu and service - so we asked them to cater our staff picnic at a local park in Burlingame! Huge hit - they were super efficient and generous with their portions. We had a very basic menu - tortillas, grilled chicken or steak, re-fried beans, lettuce and fresh tomato/onions. They provided setup, service and breakdown. Easy. It was the perfect meal for a sunny day in Washington Park, and didn't weigh staff down right before one of the funnest obstacle courses ever! I thought this would be my new go-to place after seeing all the reviews and pictures but this place is just A-OK. I had ordered a super grilled chicken burrito with no rice and no beans and we also ordered a super lengua burrito with no beans. They make everything fresh so it too awhile for us to get our order. This may sound weird but my burrito was TOO saucy and it made it very heavy for me to eat. They put way too much sour cream and cheese in it and I swear all the meat was on the bottom where I couldn't really eat the burrito anymore. Once I reached the bottom I just used a spoon to scoop out the chicken cause I didn't want the sauce. I must say their green salsa is pretty good though, as well as their chips. Their chips are different from other places, they are light, crispy and not oily at all which I liked. As for the lengua burrito the meat was okay...it was a bit too chewy. While we were waiting for our order I did see a lady hand making their tortillas which was pretty awesome, I think if I do come back next time I will order some tacos. read more

I can describe them as a thick corn tortilla base, topped with beans, choice of meet, salsa, cheese & crema. It would be similar to a tostada, but these are much better. I was in burrito limbo for a while since having a bad one at Taqueria La Iguana Azul. But, I had a burrito at Tipico Taqueria Restaurant (which is where Taqueria La Altena used to be) and I was pretty impressed--especially when I saw the cook cut up a piece of tongue for my own personal burrito! The burrito I had tasted fresh... I had one at Taqueria Menudo a couple of weeks ago... and eating their tongue burrito, I caught a side sniff during one of my chews of older funky meat. Then, the ugliness came on... unpeeled tongue piece... I was chewing on an unpeeled tongue piece. Gross!!! None of that happened today. Soft delicious meat... fresh... good salsa with the right hot bite. The burrito came wrapped in tin foil on wax paper on top of a real plate!!!! That spoke volumes to me. I'm still Chinese enough to eat pizza with knife and fork and am the same way with a burrito. Also, there's no strange stuff going on in this burrito of mine. You know... multicultural nightmares do happen in San Francisco where you get coleslaw on one end and fruit salad on the other. That didn't happen. I was so happy there was no corn in this burrito (like at Taqueria Los Coyotes). That's just wrong to me. I do miss the burritos I had at Taqueria Maria that used to be on Geneva Avenue. Best taqueria! Quality fresh meats, big portions, best prices and they are by far superior to any taquerias in the mission district. I was so happy when they reopened I was missing they're big sloppy cheesy suizas. The new interior looks great and staff is always up to par with covid regulations and enforcing the mask mandate rule and 6 feet distance between customers. They have very limited indoor dining. I was impressed to see that the prices were lower than the other taquerias in the area. These are definitely the best burritos outside of the Mission District, and frankly, I would put them up against any burrito in the Mission too. El Farolito and Guadalajara are both good, but Mexico Tipico is better. The grilled chicken is especially fantastic, but all of the ingredients are always so fresh and flavorful. Every burrito and taco I've ever gotten has been hot and juicy, but never soupy or sloppy. I've never been disappointed. And the entire staff is friendly. The ratings do not lie... This has got to be the best menudo place in SF, probably better than El Tomate on 24th street. I'm usually used to Mexican places with just canned tripe and a microwave but to my amazement there was a whole friggin foot in my soup. Not only was here tripe but there was fat galore! There are Taquerias a'plenty in this very long stretch of Mission Street... Mexico Tipico doesn't stand out from street level, but step indoors and see why it actually is a level well above the rest. I've come to know and love this Mexican joint after dining here once a week for the last few months. The odd day (4 times to be exact) I decide to switch it up and have my tacos or burritos elsewhere... I can't help but regret not coming here. Their complimentary chips are supremely fresh, made in-house and the best in the neighborhood when paired with their salsa bar. They're also a little more eco-friendly than other Taquerias: they have real cutlery and little glass bowls for the salsa, not plastic straight-to-the-already-overstuffed-landfill cutlery & bowls other places offer. As other reviews have mentioned- the atmosphere is dull, but the quick service & phenomenal food take center stage. The lady at the register was super kind and the establishment was clean and relatively empty. complimentary chips and salsa (yeeeaaaasss!), is always welcomed. the salsa bar had about 3 variations of salsa and toppings, all of which appeared fresh. The torta was the first to arrive; hot off the grill, bread warm and toasted, some mayo, fresh lettuce, and filled with flavorful carne asada (perfectly cut and very small amount of gristle or fat. After eating half the sandwich I began to regret ordering a full bowl of pozole. That is until the pozole was placed before me and I could smell the delicious aroma. The broth was perfect, just enough lean pork and a side of veggies and tostada to sweeten the deal. Throughout the meal observed the locals and the frequenters coming in and their friendly interaction with the staff. I was hesitant to try this place for breakfast. Me and my boo were walking down Mission looking for a breakfast/brunch place. I didn't expect a taqueria would have the traditional American breakfast. Hey, life's full of surprises. They offer eggs, omelettes, pancakes, toast, sausage, house potatoes...what else could you want? I'm on a mission to try all of the taquerias in Excelsior. So far this is top of my list. I tried the regular tacos al pastor and asada. The meat was chopped a nice size, flavorful, good meat ratio.
