My boyfriend and I LOVE Mi Cocina. We like checking out the different Mico locations so today we came to Lakeside for the first time and we were very impressed. The space is the classic Mi Cocina style but it also has a nice heated patio section as well as an outside area by the lake and fountain. Our server Rogelio was very friendly, professional and on top of his server game. Drinks and appetizers were brought out right away and the food came out faster than expected!! I got the Brisket tacos, AMAZING as always. My boyfriend got the Nachos Mi Tierra, also wonderful. Also, Daniela the manager came over to our table to make sure everything was going good and made friendly conversation. My husband and I used to eat at this location at least once a week...many weeks got 2 to 3 visits. We loved these people. Great managers, great staff, we felt like we were home. This went on for 12-13 years. Then about a year ago they started messing with the menu. Adding sour cream and "cheese" to fajitas, cheapening the ingredients and generally reducing the quality of the wonderful food they used to serve. They bought new mambo machines that barely freeze the drinks. Recently, they moved managers around I've gone from being on a first name, hugging hello basis with all of them to not knowing the name of a single one. The exceptional service is now limited to the bar. You will notice that the bar is almost always full. Regulars know where the employees care. These employees were trained under previous managers. Just recently we ate on the patio, which we haven't done in months, and I was reminded of why we only eat at the bar. Our waitress was very sweet, but sorely under trained. No chips and salsa (I realize that isn't her responsibility, but someone missed it, yet another issue) and she didn't notice until after our food arrived and we had to ask for some salsa for fajitas. We had to find her and prompt her for drink refills (who doesn't want to sell their customer a second Mambo?) My food was delivered to the table barely warm and she was so busy that I couldn't find her to ask that they warm it up. I basically just barely ate it. We couldn't get out of there soon enough...and this is a place we usually love hang out. Not anymore, the whole experience is too annoying. I really want to go with the flow and adapt to changes, but if the changes involve low quality food, watery drinks and bad service then I can go elsewhere for much cheaper. I was always willing to pay the Mi Cocina premium for Tex Mex because if was so fresh, but they've reduced the quality and kept and/or increased the prices. So we are sad and really wish that the powers that be would wake up and see what havoc they have wreaked on this previously wonderful restaurant. read more

On a business trip and walking around the Legacy Shops area trying to find something good for dinner. In two minutes, I was instantly transported to Lincoln Road in South Beach when I walked into Mi Cocina. Tuesday night and a ton of guests waiting to be seated in this sexy and contemporary Latin restaurant. Enjoyed my dinner at the bar with Luis the bartender. Great suggestions, very good mojito and awesome personality. On this chilly night in Plano, I went with a bowl of the chicken and rice soup and it was as legit as can be, including the touch of cilantro with tortilla slices. Highly recommend. Entree was the carne asada - sliced rib eye steak served over a bed of rice with typical fajita toppings of guac, pico de gallo, tortilla and a cup of red beans. Steak was cooked perfectly, beans were outrageous and, when paired with Luis' hot sauce recommendation, it melded perfectly. To top it off, I went with the typical flan. Very rich and on point with texture and flavor. Only thing missing was the dulce de leche (caramel) on top but it wasn't missed. Love this location. I like the layout for this location. They have an awesome patio that is great for relaxing and overlooks a little pond. Not great for people-watching. The inside also has a very open layout. Their white queso is absolutely delicious! I'm a big fan of their salad. I forgot the actual name of it but it starts with an R. This has been a horrible experience. We sat outside and didn't have menus on our table for 30 minutes. Went inside to ask for one and the ladies spoke Spanish thinking we wouldn't understand but knew what they were saying. And it wasn't nice. Took forever for us to get any service on drinks and food and when our appetizer came we sat without silverware for 20 more minute. When I spoke to Alex the manager about if we could get another drink, and how the service was disappointing he said he'd buy a glass of wine if we could move they had a party coming in. After horrible service I understand you have busy party's coming in but I am also a paying customer who could have brought big party's with a good experience. This was one of my best meals ever. The Ceviche de Camarones was the best! Shrimp with Mango. Yumsters! Feel no pain with a Mambo Taxi. Mi Cocina...upscale Tex Mex right in my backyard. (Literally) We live down the street across Preston, and while a bit on the expensive side for Tex Mex, it's still a great place to go. So far we've been twice to this location. First was while waiting for a table at Taverna next door - stopped into the bar and had some amazing Mambo Limos. I'm not sure what they pour in it, but we were a little tipsy leaving. Next time was with my in-laws. They pour a stiff drink - our Crown & 7 was strong, but should be given the cost of it. All in all, food was great, wait time wasn't too bad. My only hesitation about giving 5 stars is the space itself - a bit small and like others have mentioned, loud. Can't help that given the restrictions though. read more

If you're ever in the mood for more upscale tex-mex you should probably check this place out. The tacos here probably can't compare to all those gas station tacos everyone raves about, but its better than no tacos, yeah? They can satisfy your cravings for tex mex, but don't expect to be blown away by their average food. They have quite an extensive menu with lots of choices. A lot of mix and match...tacos&enchiladas, crunch tacos&soft tacos...etc. You always get chips and salsa as you order/wait for your food. The chips are most of the time warm, which is a plus. I usually get their tacos de pescado (fish tacos) or chicken fajitas. The fish in the tacos are pretty inconsistent. Sometimes they're okay, and then sometimes they're on the fishy side. You never know til you take that first bite. You'd think I learned my lesson after a couple not so great fish tacos, but then I find myself ordering those tacos once again. I don't know what it is about this place. I'm not the biggest fan, yet I still find myself eating here quite often. This is one of those places where I kind of stand in the middle. The guac and white cheese dips were OK, nothing to rave about. Guac was fresh but needed salt and was a bit plain. Queso dip had the beginning of some spice from the poblanos but then fell kinda flat. Neither were bad though. The street taco was average, but the Habana chicken taco packed a punch of great flavor. Felt like I was eating tacos from abuelita down in Chihuahua, Mexico. YUM! I ate lunch at Mi Cocina today (7/20) with my nephews and we had the best server, Andres. He was very attentive and very nice to me and my nephews. I take my nephews out a lot and not once have they ever said that they really like the waiter. All through lunch they kept saying how nice Andres was and even when leaving they waited for Andres to come out of the kitchen to tell him thank you and how nice he was. Really, I would give this place 2.5 stars if I could but hey, it's an imperfect world. My boyfriend and I popped in here tonight for some good Tex-Mex, but I think next time we'll stick with Anamia's down the street. First of all, it was LOUD. We could barely hear each other across the table, which meant we ate most of our meal in silence. Then our server was weirdly unfriendly. At first I just wondered if he was having a bad day or something, but he was very smiley and jokey with the table next to ours, so I have to assume it was just us, though we were perfectly polite. I suspect it's because we both look like teenagers, and he figured that we weren't going to tip well, so what was the point in being nice? Despite our youthful allure, however, we are both mid-twenties professionals who are happy to leave big tips... if the service warrants it. My food was pretty good (and the chips and salsa were excellent), but my boyfriend's Tacos Habana had several burnt pieces of chicken in them. Overall, it wasn't the dining experience we were expecting (We DID tip, by the way, just not up to the usual standard). I've had good experiences at other Mi Cocina restaurants, so I hope that this was just a fluke and that if we should return, the service will be better. read more
