I was looking for something to eat on the way to Kettle Cove State Park and found Ruby Thailand on Yelp. It's a cozy, colorful, and still-feeling inside and would make for a relaxing sit down meal, but I got takeout this time around. The order was ready quickly and service was friendly. I got the mango curry with tofu and swapped for brown rice and it was delicious. I love fruit curries like mango or pineapple so it was a win that they had it in the first place, and it was a very solid curry as well. The tofu could have been slightly bigger pieces so that the tofu to fried ratio was higher, but regardless it was great. Excited to come back sometime. read more

I was in the mood for fried chicken one afternoon and I was feeling sort of cheeky so I simply googled "fried chicken near me" without expecting much because I wasn't aware of anything good in my area. Lo and behold, Fried on Gai came up as a result. I had never heard of this. I checked out their website and realized that it's sort of a ghost restaurant being run out of Ruby Thai in South Portland. My friend love the Thai food at Ruby Thai, so I figured I couldn't go wrong with fried chicken from them. And let me tell you- I'm SO glad I tried it. The chicken is absolutely delicious. The coating is so, so crispy and the meat itself is deliciously moist. I opted for an order of drumsticks and an order of wings. The wings are drumsticks and flats and the drumsticks are larger drumsticks. If you want a better idea, go to the pics in this review. I also got the spicy mayo and the Thai sweet and sour sauce. Both were good and what I expected. My friends got an order of the bites, an order of the sauces wings (garlic glaze), and since you can order from this menu as well as the Ruby Thai menu, an order of the duck stir fry. I didn't try any of that but they said the glazed wings were even better than the non-glazed bites that they got. I can't really comment on the service or ambiance because we simply ordered takeout. It was easy to pickup and it was ready on time. My friend was in and out of the place before I could even turn the car around in the parking lot. The parking lot is a little hard to pull out of because of its location and it's a little tight but it's very manageable. We had the most amazing dinner! Marinated shrimp with a cup of rice topped with a violet blossom. My partner had a leg of duck drenched with modestly spicy coconut milk. There were crispy fried noodles and great thick soft noodles and onions and vegetables we didn't recognize but that were wonderful nonetheless. i mentioned it was my birthday and five minutes later a slice of cake and a lit candle came out with a song. Such incredible service! The hostess recommended sticky rice with mango slices. I have wondered about sticky rice for years. It was mouth wateringly yummy. I would come back for that alone! The television screen on the wall focused on Thai food markets was fascinating to watch while we waited for our food and the soft jazz music in the background was relaxing. I had a crappy day today, so I wanted to treat myself to dinner. I got the fried shrimp appetizer and the rad na noodle entree with pork. My shrimp was lightly fried, very crispy, and very good. I would like there to have been a bit more of the sweet sauce with it. It was so good, though, that even though it was really too hot I couldn't wait to dig in. The rad na was very good, the pork soft and tender, the gravy-broth super savory. Again, very hot, probably should have waited, but so so good. Who wants to wait? read more

I was visiting Portland the Saturday before Columbus Day, and wanted to try some of the local seafood. However, all the Western restaurants in the area had long waits for dine-in and were too busy to accept take-out orders at all. This place was a godsend; I ordered the mango haddock to go and they had it ready in 10-15 minutes. The portion size was excellent, with a generous piece of breaded haddock over a bed of mixed Asian vegetables. The mango sauce was sweet and sour, very flavorful. I've been coming here for five years or so and it's always phenomenal. You can taste the difference that the fresh vegetables make and the sauces are wonderful!! We always have to order double what we think we want of the pineapple rice. Its sooooo good. I also love the Penang curry and lets be honest, all their curries. They have this spicy vegetable dish that will make you not miss meat for a second. I'd also recommend the invisible pad Thai. Delicious and cravable!! Wow. So many good reviews... I cannot understand why. We got chicken pad Thai for take out, and it was just a sugar bomb. Noodles were gummy and the only taste was sweet. We had a delightful dinner here. The service was excellent, but more than that was the wonderful variety of sweet and sour flavors that tickled our taste buds. We ordered three appetizers, spring rolls, Ruby thai rolls, and crab rangoon. Each appetizer was full of unique flavors that brought perfection to our pallette and joy to our hearts. My wife said this was the best crab ragoon she ever had. I had the won ton soup with pork and shrimp wontons, and fresh vegetabkes. Even the carrots were thin sliced in a decorative pattern but were perfectly cooked, with a light crunch that was very satisfying. We eat out often at our favorite chinese restaurant yet Ruby's wonton soup was far superior. Our main course was the simple pad thai with shrimp. My wife had the crispy Pad Thai while I rchose the more conservative regular noodle. If you cant get this dish right you are not a thai restaurant. Well..they did it so wonderfully, the shrinp was fresh off the dock anf thry didnt skimp on the amount. Again the shrimp were perfectly cooked, not over cooked and the noodles were prepared by a true expert-a passionate chef with an eye for perfection. Having read the reviews on Yelp and heard things from people about this place, to say nothing of driving past it on a routine basis, we finally here. I brought home food one night and my husband and I agree... It's nothing to write Yelp about! The food was lackluster quality at best and I found it disappointing that so many others seem to find it so much better. Was this a bad night? Yum Woon Sen was flavorless, despite ordering spicy (and is described as *already* spicy). Only TWO shrimp in the entire dish, for real. Barely any noticeable ground pork and about 6 peanut halves. If you want a heap of wilted lettuce and glass noodles in a flavorless sauce then this is the dish for you. This review is for take-out only. The other night I tried Ruby Thai for the first time. I ordered pad thai, fresh spring rolls and crab rangoon to go. When picking up the order I did notice a very sweet and comfortable looking dining room and plan to eat in a next time. I was extremely satisfied with the pad thai. The spring rolls were also particularly delicious with a little bit more green onion then others I've had and ground pork, which was a unique and tasty twist. One of the biggest surprises from the order though, where the crab rangoons. Crab rangoons are extremely popular in my household. Most of the crab rangoons we've gotten in the area have been the same basic construct; cream cheese, imitation crab meat, sometimes shredded carrots but more or less that's it. These crab rangoons actually had REAL crab meat in them! An absolute first from any Thai restaurant in the greater Portland area. This place is really solid. I will definitely return! read more

This place is so good! The best in Portland area IMO. Every time I've had is so good. They had a special for awhile pad Thai with crispy chicken. Not sure if they still have it but highly recommend. We were very disappointed in our meal tonight. We ordered through Grub Hub but when the order arrived we were short one entree and a dessert (30.00). Grub Hub blamed Ruby Thai and Ruby Thai blamed the driver and we got little compensation. Will not order from here again. read more

We started going to Ruby Thai because it's in the most convenient location from our house, and we instantly fell in love with their food. We prefer a lot of their "typical" Thai food dishes to many other Thai restaurants out there. It's also a great place for an easy and simple lunch/dinner out if you don't feel like cooking -- never needed to wait for some decent food. The only complain/suggestion we have for a Thai restaurant which targets most of its businesses on take-out orders...... please start to open on Sundays!!!! You have no idea how many times we were planning to order take-outs on Sundays and then found out that you are not open after we called in. Why would a take-out restaurant not open on Sundays?? Huhhmmmm.... difficult to understand. But good food! read more

Went here with a group for dinner yesterday - 4th of July. The service was slow but others in our party said the staff was all different than normal. A party of six for dinner was about two hours from start to post-meal conversation. I had a few questions about menu items but the server told us it was his very first day so he didn't know. I took a chance on the Almond Tamarind Ginger Chicken, since I am crazy about tamarind flavor. Turned out it was a great choice. I also asked for brown rice instead of white rice. Once each of the six people in our party ordered, the wait for food was not too long. Unfortunately, our appetizers came out at the same time as our meals. The fresh rolls were very good, with the rice paper wrapper perfectly cooked and not gummy. The dish I chose turned out to be a big winner - delicious chicken, very lightly battered and sautéed, in a tamarind ginger sauce that was not too sweet or sugary. Toasted sliced almonds on top were a great crunchy addition. Others ordered mango curry, panang curry, and cashew stir fry, and reported that all were very good. On a night with the regular staff, the service might have been a bit quicker. But it was worth it. I would definitely return, or try the takeout, which was doing a brisk business as well. read more

The people at Ruby Thailand are great. The staff is always very friendly and my son loves getting to pick out a piece of after dinner candy. The food is the best Thai food around in my opinion. We have tried a lot on the menu and everything has been fantastic. They have THE best crab rangoon hands down. My personal favorite entre is the basil chicken pad thai. Plenty of parking even though it looks tight from the street. Do yourself a favor and give these folks a try asap. read more

We ordered take out from here about a month ago and it was all delicious. Everything was fresh; I was especially impressed with the vegetables. I would recommend this to those who are fond of asian food as well as more American-food eaters. (I can't speak for those looking for authenticity, not being a Thai expert). We started with Crab Rangoon which had a good balance of crab and cheese, and the chive dumplings (A word of caution on these for those unfamiliar with Thai food: they are not like the pot-sticker dumplings in a Chinese restaurant. They are soft and chewy - similar to savory Japanese mochi). For main meal, the spicy (Masaman?) curry was spicy enough for my fire-loving boyfriend and the mild version was also flavorful. (Also, for those unfamiliar with Thai - Thai curry is more like spicy soup than Indian or Japanese curry dishes). The Vegetable Pad Thai had excellent seasoning and the veggies were perfectly cooked. Our most finicky eater had the Fresh Basil Chicken and loved it. The only downside was we ordered on a Friday night when they were super busy. When we placed the order, they told us it would be half an hour, then called back 5 minutes later to tell us it would actually be close to an hour. They lose one star for not telling us immediately the wait would be so long, but they get it back for having the courtesy of calling back to update the ETA. read more

I have had my share of Thai food and this restaurant is in my top three for sure. We ordered take out and the portions are so huge, you'll have seconds for the next day or for the next round! I had Nam Prik Pao stir fry which has Thai chili paste, vegetables, and chicken, seafood, beef, pork, or tofu. Jasmine rice comes on the side and it's substantial for a meal! I had it with chicken and I was very pleased. The dish was seasoned well and I LOVE LOVE LOVE how there's enough sauce to pour over the jasmine rice that it comes with.
