If you don't know what you're looking for, this place would be about 4 stars. If you do know what you're looking for, this place is mid at best. The ambiance is really cool, but the seating is tight and the table is small, even for 2 people. You order on your phone which is cool and leaves less room for error, but what you end up getting is a not personal, not intimate time in a tight table where you can barely fit your plate of food. and you're expected to pay a 20% tip for someone who barely talks to you. (Which we did, I'm not a monster.) I'll start off with the good, the xiao long bao ( pork soup dumplings) were good, fair priced, and a good portion. Everything else was subpar. I got a chicken cutlet and my husband got their version of a pork lo mein. The chicken cutlet was... okay. The chicken was juicy and the texture of the coating was good, but the secret to having a good chicken cutlet is the sauce. All you get is mayo and Thai chili sauce, which didn't really add anything to it, and no rice either or carb with it makes it a little hard to eat. The lo mein was alright, but it doesn't stand out for its flavor. You're better off going to a local Chinese takeout for a better price. If you do decide to come here, it's good for an introvert who doesn't like to talk much to people and you're not THAT hungry, and all you want is soup dumplings. It's winter, so let's go to Mian and Bao and order a beef pancake roll, and two cold dishes to go with it: their spicy cold jelly noodles, and ice jelly. I placed an order online and went it for pickup. Upon entering, the staff somehow knew I was the sole takeout order. Overall interior--very small space, reddish ambiance, and some windows into the kitchen. Later on, during a separate visit, I placed an order for their soup dumplings (pork) and their pan fried buns (shrimp+pork). First, the good: The beef pancake roll was tasty. Although it was small, it had a good amount of flavor from the sauce. But it was quite small. An order of soup dumplings comes with 6 of them. Their pork was **slightly** stinky, and the broth inside had a noticeable ginger component--noticeable, but not too strong. Their shrimp and pork pan-fried buns did not have a crisp surface, but they were juicy, had a whole shrimp within, and overall pleasant flavors. Since the crunch was missing, the texture was lacking. Second, those jelly noodles, accompanied by what **should** be fragrant oil, was instead accompanied by oil that was not fragrant. Disappointing. It's not that difficult to extract aromatics and make a reasonably delicious chili oil. Small dried/fried soybeans offered a textural little crunch on the noodles. Overall, the dish was disappointing, due to lack of punchy flavor, which is of course dependent on the oil, vinegar, and toppings, since the jelly noodles (probably mung bean based) themselves are meant to have no flavor. Third, the ice jelly in syrup, while refreshing, was also a let down. The base is iced jelly in not-very-sweet syrup. That's why it's sprinkled with toppings. However, their provided toppings were abysmal. Sure sesame seeds, some type of dried raisin, and perhaps hawthorn candy bits might impart some flavor. Unfortunately those items were devoid of taste. To make the food mode enjoyable, we added our own raisins, peanut and almond butter which transformed the jelly into a much better dish. Overall, the two cold dishes kinda suck, and I don't recommend ordering those. Their beef pancake roll had a good flavor combo, but it was rather small. Their chili oil and vinegar combo is not something they should be proud of if they rely on it to impart flavor. If you like soup dumplings and pan-fried buns, you might try their renditions of those, knowing their soup dumpling broth has a gingery backdrop, and their pan-fried buns lack crisp textures but are still juicy and flavorful. Finally, note that their portions are on the smaller side across the board. To stay informed, note that there does exist another establishment roughly 13 miles north of Mian & Bao with better value (in terms of per unit price, flavor, diversity of menu items, and quantity of food), even if the total cost of your meal is more. However, if you're restricted to staying within the Triangle, Mian & Bao may suit your needs just fine. read more

This is my favorite place in Austin for some of the best dan dan noodles and the thinnest dumpling wrappers you can find. It's a bit of a secret because on weekends during lunch, it's usually not too crowded, and there's plenty of room. You really have to try the soup dumplings. They're a must-try and might even be the best in town, packed with delicious pork juices. Other dishes, like the beef rolls, can be hit or miss. I'd suggest skipping them since they don't quite compare to Julie's Noodles. Since there are so many individual dishes, why not give them all a shot to see which ones you enjoy the most? read more

My wife wanted to try this place and I am so glad we did. The shrimp shumai was outstanding and both my wife and son enjoyed their supper dumplings. I had the beef rolled in scallion pancakes and the Dan Dan noodles (pork). The spice of the noodles sneaks up on you, but man they were good! The waitstaff was great and offered suggestions for our next meal. My only thing was that there was a slight odor coming from the washrooms, but hopefully, that isn't a normal thing. Humans may be destroying the planet And the Dallas Wings lose and lose and lose again. But some things are going right. Having Mian and Bao move into the Triangle is definitely on the good side of the ledger. * * * In a helluva lot of Asian restaurants in Austin, you order dumplings or gyoza, Back in the kitchen they go to their freezer, Pull out a commercial bag, Steam or pan-fry said dumplings for you. They get served on your table. Whoop-de-doo. You can buy all of that stuff at Hmart and do it at home yourself and not have to leave a 20% tip. There are places in Austin that make their own dumplings. When the dumplings come to your table, you will have to ask your server which are the pork ones and which are the chicken ones. You sure won't be able to tell by tasting the dumplings themselves. They all taste like they have generic filling. * * * The dumplings are all hand and home made here. The dumplings are packed with flavor. You won't have to ask your server which is which. One bite and you will know. Flavors are sensational. * * * Buns are a little less successful. Messy, hard to eat because broth spills all over the place, and the thick lining of dough kills some of the taste inside. But I am totally happy to pass on the buns if I can get good dumplings. Asians eat industrial quantities of fried rice. Americans only think about fried rice as a side dish. Fried rice is one of the most satisfying meals on the planet . Comfort food in America is supposed to be macaroni and cheese. Fried rice comforts me twenty times better than macaroni and cheese. But we are not in Vancouver, Flushing Chinatown or Sydney Chinatown. By the super low standards of Austin dumpling cooking - these guys are all-stars. Mian & Bao is a new (authentic) Chinese restaurant located in the Triangle mixed use development in Central Austin. Although the Triangle has ample free parking - expect to spend quite some time circling the various parking garage and streets if you're coming during any prime hours (e.g., lunchtime) given the amount of popular retail establishments relative to the limited number of parking spots. I came with a friend for lunch and was quickly reminded that this is about a few hundred feet away from Dumpling World, another one of my go-to (authentic) Chinese food restaurants in Austin. Given that Dumpling World also has a good selection of dumplings (bao) and noodles (mian), I thought it was interesting to have two very similar restaurants located very closely together. Thankfully, I think there is a world where these two can exist. If you've been to Dumpling World, it truly feels like a more authentic Chinese establishment - just a little rough along the edges in terms of the build-out and feel but that makes the emphasis on the food so much greater. Mian & Bao is a bit more refined on the feel and the food but I'd argue both end up scratching a slightly different itch in terms of what you want to do. If you're in your sweatpants going for a quick dumpling run - goto Dumpling World. If you're trying to have a slightly nicer date night - pick Mian & Bao. The food packed a little more punch and flavor relative to Dumpling World and I think the signature dishes (Xiao Long Bao + Beef Noodle Soup) definitely reminded me of Taiwan. Food was so good I forgot to take pictures. Mian & Bao is one of the newer Chinese restaurants in Austin and it packs a nuance in its take of traditional chinese cuisine. While you can get spicy wontons at many different Chinese restaurants, Mian & Bao delivers a kick and a snare in the dumpling filling itself that adds depth to the flavor and leaves you wanting more. Their sesame balls were crunchy on the outside, warm sweet on the inside, and filled with delicious red bean. They certainly know how to make Pan Fried Pork Buns and Beef Pancake rolls. I've tried other Dimsum-esque places in Austin that offer these dishes, but they don't quite come close to the ones served at Mian & Bao. I for one am looking forward to the competition that the new restaurants are bringing to Austin, and Mian & Bao is a step in the right direction. read more

My other favorite dish was the tofu appetizer with preserved egg on top - a bit spicy, the silky tofu texture goes so well with the strong egg flavor. Chili wontons were solid. I checked out this new place in the Triangle. It had this slightly dark and moody vibe to it. You order by scanning your QR Code and sending it to the kitchen. The tricky part is paying since the website said you could pay, but you actually need to call over the waiter or waitress to help with that. Mian & Bao has entered the Austin scene as a strong contender for the best Chinese food in the city. First off, love play on words. Mian Bao is "bread" in Chinese but Mian & Bao means "noodles and buns". I was surprised how full the restaurant was considering how new it is and how it doesn't even have a social media account yet. Selfishly, I hope it remains under the radar. You place your order through a QR code on the table, and the dishes start coming out one by one. They actually come out quite fast, and you can see the chefs through the window. They seemed chill and not stressed, which isn't always the case at restaurants. Apparently I'm picky with my xiao long bao (soup dumplings) and I've tried quite a few in Austin. I think these had to be my favorite. The skin holds up, and the flavor is not too sweet. I also loved the pork pan fried buns, they're one of my favorite Chinese dishes and they did them well. It was very hot when it arrived. The spicy beef noodle soup was also notable, with great flavor and noodle texture. It's not very spicy, with just a bit of a kick in the aftertaste. The prices aren't too bad, and the portions are small so you're meant to order multiple dishes. The portion size of the beef noodle soup is smaller compared to other places, and might not fill you up if that's the only item you order. One of my new favorite Chinese restaurants that just opened here in Austin. They offer a variety of Chinese dishes e.g. noodles, rice, dumplings, bao. I really enjoyed their noodles. They are full of flavour esp the spicy noodle. The XLB tastes really good, very juicy. The food tastes like they were just made. Service was pretty good. Food came out quickly but a downside is that the portions are small. The restaurant is not big, so it may take some time to get a table. I highly recommend if you are in the area. I really enjoyed my meal here at Mian & Bao! While the restaurant is not really suited for accommodating bigger groups, we had called ahead around 20 minutes beforehand so that they could push some tables together for us. We ended up splitting out group of 10 between two tables. The servers were so friendly and the food comes out pretty quickly. And honestly the prices aren't bad. We split 9 orders between 6 people and it came out to a little over $20 per person. We got: Spicy Cold Jelly Noodles - the flavor of this dish was so good. The chili oil and the coldness and the crunchy bits all came together really well. But I didn't care much for the texture of the noodles. I thought it would be chewier. But definitely cool to try! Spicy beef noodle (2 orders both with extra beef) - the texture of these noodles were sooo good. They were so bouncy! The broth was also delicious, and the meat was decently tender, but it wasn't really spicy. Chengdu cold noodles - a classic spicy cold noodle, it was good but this dish didn't really stand out to me. Xiao long bao - I'm always a sucker for a soup dumpling! The skins were so thin (which is a plus!) And the soup inside was so flavorful. Pan fried pork bun - the bread wasn't too thick and the meat inside was so juicy, I was a big fan. Pan fried beef bun - if you like more fried-ness, you would probably like this better than the pork bun. But if you like more bread-iness, the pork bun is probably a better choice. But same thing with juicy and flavorful meat. Beef pancake roll - also another classic! The pancake was so crispy and the perfect amount of oiliness and the cucumbers have a really refreshing bite. Shrimp fried rice - this was mainly the only dish I didn't care much for. The texture of the rice was really nice. But flavor wise, I didn't get much. It has a nice amount of shrimp though. The service staff was very attentive and wanted to offer me water even though I was only a party of one ordering to go. I'm always looking for a good spicy beef noodle soup, and was happy to find this dish was delicious! The broth was perfectly salty with a slightly numbing effect. The name of this place is called Mian and Bao and that's exactly what I ordered! Right off the bat, I feel like they did not skimp on the interior decor of this place. It looks classy and modern yet some traditional elements like old times furniture, lighting and paintings thrown in. The lofi jazz music just added another classy element that made this place a great place to take a date and enjoy delicious food. The food is VERY decently priced, especially the appetizers and I really appreciate that. Marinated Cucumber (4/5) - These seasoned cucumbers are served cold, with a nice satisfying crunch and in my opinion a must order to complement some of the spicy dishes on the menu. It is very moist with a slight tanginess which gives it a refreshing taste. Chili Oil Wonton (5/5) - These wontons are packed with flavor inside and out with a great balanced taste of spice from the chili oil, tanginess from the vinegar and saltiness from the soy. The pork inside is flavorful and soft and the texture of the wonton itself is just perfect. Chili wontons in other shops I ate before are too rich and salty for my liking but I think they really got the flavor profile down for this. Spicy Beef Noodle (5/5) - This beef noodle has a LOT of depth and filled with complex flavors and what I believe to be the star of the show. I personally don't like the mala (spicy numbing) taste and I was surprised to taste it when I first took a bite. The menu did not say anything about it being mala favor. With that being said though, it was not that strong at all and to my surprise really good! This is a perfect dish to introduce anyone who's never tried Mala flavor before. The beef has a good amount of fat to meat ratio, VERY tender and tastes amazing. The noodles are made to be soft and tastes great in tandem with the crunch of the bok choy veggies. It's hard to find a good spot in Austin for traditional spicy beef noodle soup but I think they nailed it here. Service is very quick, efficient and the servers are really nice. My only nitpick is that their menus don't have much detail on what ingredients are used, not even what meat they use in the wonton. Ambiance is nice! It's a good sit down restaurant but still pretty casual. Between the two of us, we got three appetizers and a shrimp friend rice. Came here on a Thursday evening early enough to miss the dinner rush but not early enough to miss the parking mishaps. This area is pretty overall crowded so fighting for a spot in the triangle around dinner is a minor inconvenience. We picked out a couple of their popular dishes once we were sat via recommendations from fellow yelpers. The xia long boa was massive comparative to other soup dumplings I've gotten around town but didn't have as much broths richness. I think the red chilli wontons were better than special noodle but the star for the evening was the Dan Dan noodles! The cucumbers were what you get from any Chinese restaurant so nothing super surprising. My recommendation is to get here early if you don't want to be packed into an overly crowded space. Small but very efficient place. The servers are friendly, quick and very attentive. The food is delicious like the Xiao Long Bao, Pan fried pork and shrimp bun, Sesame Balls and Stir fried shrimp noodles. And if you want to try something different, order the Thousand year egg with tofu and the Braised Gluten veg. With wood ear mushrooms. The only negative is parking its hard to find one. read more

However, the service was exceptionally friendly. The payment process is a bit unusual--you order through your phone on their website, but you still receive a physical bill and can't pay online. Amazing place to come for some delicious dumplings and bites that are perfect for sharing amongst your group. The food you can order on your phone and it comes out quickly to your table so it's easy to add more items as you go. Cute inside dining area. This place is incredible and a great price value. I liked how they had the menu ordering done on phone, basically you don't need to talk to the servers too much. The interior has a lot of tables inside and the location is in a brightly lit plaza that is very cute especially at night. The xiaolong bao (soup dumplings) were honestly very basic and not standout to me. However, I did really like their chili oil wontons and I probably ate the soup dumplings with some of that leftover chili oil wonton base. The stir fry was also a classic choice and good portion size for its affordable price. For the price I think this place was great, if I were to go again I'd want to try some of their other noodles though and 100% would only reorder the chili oil wontons. read more

Love this new spot in the triangle that combines Shanghai and Szechuan food. They are interior is well decorated, and they have a semi open kitchen concept where you can watch them make the dumplings. I really enjoyed the Shanghai appetizers some of which you won't find anywhere else in Austin and I also enjoyed the noodle dishes. The prices are also very reasonable. I would love to return to try more of their menu items. Since they are in the triangle, sometimes it can be hard to find parking, especially during busy hours, but they also have a garage you can park in as well. read more

There was about a 20 minute wait to receive seating but once inside the items came out really fast! This is a great restaurant to go with at least one other person so that you can order multiple items to share. We shared the purple sweet potato cheese roll, chili oil dumplings, soup dumplings, pan fried beef bun, marinated cucumbers, and Szechuan Dan Dan noodles. The Szechuan dan dan and chili oil dumplings were my favorite items. Followed by the pan fried beef buns and marinated cucumbers. The sweet potato cheese rolls were also pretty good. They were crispy and refreshing. The soup dumplings were pretty decent but would have been even better if paired with hot chili oil. Next time, I'm going to stick with ordering the Szechuan Dan Dan and chili oil dumplings along with other menu items that come with the hot chili oil. read more

This place has such a charming and inviting atmosphere! The hanging lanterns add a magical touch, casting a warm, cozy glow that makes everything feel so dreamy. It's like stepping into a little hidden gem--so cute and full of character. Food came out a bit slow and one dish at a time vs all at once. That didn't bother me though as I had more time to catch up with my friends. The food was quite tasty! My favorites were the soup dumplings and the sweet rice cakes. Soup dumplings were juicy. Spicy noodles didn't have much of a strong Mala flavor but still very good for me. Not too salty. Personally, I don't like it that spicy so I didn't mind that the noodle dish was on the milder side. The pan fried dumplings were good but not the best I've had. I was expecting them to be crispier on the outside. Good service. I would definitely come back to try other dishes and get more soup dumplings! read more
