I was bound by Lent rules being a Friday, so I went for FISH FRIDAYS and got: 1 order of ikamura (grilled squid) and 1 order of takoyaki (octopus balls) I've never had these dishes before so bear that in mind. Ikamura - This was cut in ring pieces and there were some tentacle segments. I've never had octopus. It was cooked well and there was some teriyaki sauce coating it. I wish there was more. Now Im sure it was cooked in the traditional manner (Jpn?), but I really wish there was some more spices on the actual flesh. I realize being Indian and living my first 36% of my life in the Caribbean makes me more picky about seafood. It was a solid 3/5 Takoyaki - This is a spherical fritter with some flour and pieces of octopus. It was fried and had some garnish and sweet sauce which escapes me. Even though it was fried, i liked the flavor profile more with a sweet and slightly spicy taste. There are 5 pieces for $5. 4/5 It would be a 3.5, but the 2 dishes were packaged very well with plastic cutlery and chopsticks (though as a clumsy GAIJIN I don't use them). The seaweed salad didn't have enough dressing as it sat on a bed of unseasoned iceberg lettuce. the gyoza was fine. I was intrigued when I saw that a ramen place was opening in New Tampa. I feel bad for any business that had to open during a pandemic, but Michi Ramen has pivoted to handle it better than any other business I've seen. I personally will only do curbside and delivery right now. The setup they have for curbside pickup is fantastic. You walk up and speak into an intercom. There's a slot in the window for you to put your card into. There's a tiny box with doors on each end they can put your receipt in and another similar large box where they can put your food. You never have to get close to another person and they always have taken care of us quickly! To be honest I liked, but didn't love their ramen. What really has intrigued me is their tea bar. They have several green tea drinks, a few milk teas (with no boba), but also have *yogurt* drinks. I see that even though they have 40+ reviews I'm the first person to mention this. I really had no idea what to expect with a yogurt drink. I thought that "yogurt" could possibly mean that it had a thick consistency, but that's not the case. The yogurt apparently just gives it a more powerful flavor. So far my favorite is the grape yogurt drink. It's really refreshing unlike anything I've ever tasted. I really wanted to love this place, but I guess it just wasn't my cup of tea. Fried calamari was probably just a few second overdone and still one of the only things I enjoyed. I ordered the Yuzu shoyu ramen as I don't eat pork and chose something without it. The broth was sort of bland which made this dish a little disappointing. I LOVE marinated eggs so I asked for the extra two pieces you see (that was $2 alone). Eggs were tasty. The chicken was okay. Ramen was al dente, which was fine for me. My husband ordered the gyu rice bowl and I think I enjoyed his dish more because the meat was very flavorful. I don't think it was worth $16 though. We had 1 appetizer, 2 main dishes, and two drinks and it totaled $62. Maybe it's because I didn't enjoy my dish, but I don't think it was all worth $62. While they could definitely handle larger groups I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a fun night out with friends or for a date night. It is more of a fast paced meal and a place for everyone to laugh at the funny faces made while slurping up noodles. (11/18/22) Setting **** I always thought this was more of a takeout place which they do offer but inside it is a full sit down modern, clean and casual restaurant. The menus have pictures on them to give you an idea of the atmosphere. The seating is primarily enclosed booths and banquets and there is a full service bar although it is wall facing. It looks like at some point the space served sushi as there appears to be a sushi bar but they do not currently serve sushi. Located in a strip mall provides plenty of parking and early on a Friday evening it wasn't particularly busy with most of the other tables filled with families. The only downside as I see it is that it is very, very bright inside and it's not really a place for date night. Dimming the lights would make it feel much more intimate. Service **** Our server, Jennifer, was very pleasant, offered up suggestions with ease and accommodated special requests without hesitation. The food comes out fast with little break between appetizers and entrees. Food **** The menu is small, essentially only offering Ramen or Rice Bowls so it may not please all if you have picky eaters in your party. All the kids I saw were eating Ramen but there is Tenders & Fries listed under appetizers. Regarding apps; the Edamame was cooked perfectly although could have used a bit more salt. The Chicken Wings however were absolutely fantastic! Super crispy yet still juicy they were so addicting we took an order to go with us. My daughter (15) order the Steak and Rice Bowl without all the extras. It arrived not with the expected thick sliced steak like the picture but instead was very thinly sliced, slightly fatty meat you might find on a cheese steak. It was however very tender and delicious. At Jennifer's suggestion I went with the Spicy Pork Ramen Bowl, my wife the Chicken. Both were excellent but there wasn't a lot of protein in either one. The pork in mine while very tasty was also very fatty. Both bowls came with what seemed like an overwhelming amount of scallions and next time I would ask for them to cut back on those. I'm visiting family in the area and they recommended Michi Ramen. The food was really good. It's a smaller menu, but have solid options: Ramen, Rice Bowls, and appetizers. For appetizers, takoyaki and fried shrimp were choice picks. They came out fresh and the fried crunchy bits were satisfying. There's nothing better than fried food fresh on the table. All of their Ramen bases offer black garlic or spicy paste. I decided to add both to their tonkotsu Ramen and it was really good. Thick rich broth with a light spicy kick. The broth held onto the thin noodles nicely. My bowl had a few slices of pork, which were okay, but the mushrooms and bamboo shoots really added the variety of crunchy textures. They do offer a few desserts and my cousin couldn't leave without trying their deep fried cheesecake. It didn't last very long on the table! Went here for dinner with my husband. Food was ok the edamame was fairly undercooked and hard to open up to eat, the pork buns were tasty and the ramen was fairly good. The service was really aggressive in the beginning and then after we put our food in they disappeared and had to glad them brown for boxes and the check. Definitely wouldn't recommend beer on draft, super flat and doesn't taste right - I'm guessing the lines haven't been cleaned in a while or something. Might have caught them on an off night, definitely not the worst dinner, just not my favorite. 4.5 stars rounded up! This North Austin-based Ramen eatery first opened in May 2012... as a food truck! It took just a few months for Michi's first Brick & Mortar eatery to open. And in 2015, it earned the honor of "Best Ramen" in Austin. At that time, Michi offered two basic broths. One was Miso-based while the other was soy-based. There are currently 3 Austin locations. All the Michi Ramen locations are owned by one man: Fredrick Lee. How's that for trivia! This particular Japanese Ramen eatery had the unfortunate luck of having a soft opening in mid March 2020. Just two weeks later, the establishment was closed due to Covid restrictions. That May, it opened only for Takeout, & didn't fully reopen until mid September 2020. I have wanted to stop in for the last 8 months; today was the day, & I was NOT disappointed. This Japanese Ramen restaurant has a most interesting menu: 16 appetizers that range in price from $4.50 (Edamame & Shumai) to $9.50 (Soft Shell Crab). I tried two appetizers: the $6.95 Fried Chicken Wings w/ Sweet Thai Chili Sauce & the $5.95 pan seared pork Gyoza. The Gyoza was VERY GOOD (see pic), but the Fried Chicken Wings were unimpressive. Although they had a nice flavor & the Thi Chili Sauce was excellent, the wings were overly breaded-- see pic. (I; however, am normally not a big fan of most fried foods, so I may not be the best critic.) The menu also includes 2 soups (Miso & Clear) & 5 salads, w/ the most expensive salad the $6.95 Ika Sansai (squid & Japanese veggies). If a Ramen entree is not on your culinary agenda, there are 3 available Bowls: Braised Pork ($13.95); Gyu ($15.95); & Eel @ $17.95. Last, but definitely not least, are the namesake bowls: 7 Ramen offerings that include my MISO bowl that included flour noodles; ground pork; sliced pork chashu; scallions; chives; cilantro; bean sprouts; & a half soft boiled egg-- all in a "rich golden chicken broth." I opted for "Regular" seasoning, but Spicy Oil & Paste, as well as Black Garlic were also available. SEE PIC of my INCREDIBLE Ramen-- seriously, just $13.95! Service was EXCELLENT; the friendly young woman greeted me the moment I walked thru the door. She took my order @ the host/hostess counter before offering me ice water while I waited. While handing my order to me after a short wait, she thanked me multiple times. She appeared genuinely friendly. The restaurant has a "full" non-alcoholic bar. Some drinks @ the Michi Tea Bar are Peach, Strawberry, Grape, Lycee, Mango, & Passionfruit Yogurt Drink, as well as Milk Tea, Taro Milk Tea, & Macha Milk Tea. 6 Green Teas are also available in all the same flavors as the Yogurt drinks. All sell for $4.50 each. The restaurant is divided into four sections: The exterior kitchen area that has barstools; the Michi Tea Bar that also offers barstool seating (see pic); the center section w/ wooden tables (see pic), & the Eastside interior wall that has available booth seating. The dining room appeared spotless. However, I was just Patron #3 of the day. Michi Ramen is open 7 days weekly. Cash; Mastercard; Visa; Discover; & American Express are accepted methods of payment. All the dishes that we ordered were good but we agreed that we would skip soft shell crab on our next visit. It was a little too fishy for me (my opinion though, so please don't hesitate to try it maybe you will like it). Everything seems to close early around the area but I got lucky and was just in time to order right before they closed. I ordered the TonKotsu ramen and it was delicious. The broth was one I had never tasted before it was full of flavor and the meat, and veggies that were included were fresh and flavorful as well.
