This isn't my first time here but I was so impressed by the amount of customer service I received today that they deserve a 5star review!! So I ordered lunch to go, but decided I'd eat there after all, the gentleman that takes orders noticed I was eating there brought me a glass of water and a bowl of miso soup to go along with my lunch. He also insisted that I let him clean the table when I was done after he saw me putting everything back in the bag to throw away.. Being that I work very close by to Midori 5, it was one of the few choices I had to choose from to get asian take-out for my class. My co-worker recommended it to me and I was not disappointed. It seems like a small mom & pop type of business that is not short of friendly customer service. While waiting for my large order of food to feed a group of hungry college students, they served me miso soup. Here's what I ordered: -california rolls -teriyaki chicken -chicken salad -yakisoba It's not gourmet japanese food, but it is definitely a good deal for the price. My students enjoyed it. The deadline was fast approaching, and I and my fellow coworkers peered at each other over the glowy blue screens of our duel 5 Macs. Jessica had that wild look in her eye, and I thought to myself, "I think I've seen that look before." It was then that I realized I'd seen that look on a crazed wolf about to devour a rabbit on the Discovery Channel. We had been hard at work for what seemed like days, but in reality was only one day. Maybe even less. However, by the second time InDesign crashed, we realized it was about time we take a break to get some sustenance before returning to the Dark Cave of Graphic Design. Two minutes and one cramped car ride later, we stepped through the strip-malltastic doors of Midori 5, a small Japanese restaurant off the beaten path in La Mirada. Immediately we were immersed in a veritable twilight zone of conflicting smells, sights, and sounds. A waitress greeted us with over-the-top friendliness, even though this wasn't one of those full-service places. But it wasn't the waitress that caught my attention. It was the music playing over the sound system. If power ballads done in the style of synthesized orchestra theatrics is your thing, then Midori is the restaurant for you. I ordered the teriyaki chicken (which includes rice, salad, miso soup, tempura, sushi...I could go on and on), and in the short, short time we were there, I swooned and swayed to Bryan Adams, Unchained Melody, and my personal favorite, Chariots of Fire. All that tasty, tasty Japanese food (huge portions, small price, very fresh, exceedingly yummy) is just a little bit better when you're eating it with the mindset of a marathon runner crossing the finish line. So, my fellow diners, if you, too, like to think that your life is a movie, and the world is your soundtrack, then I invite you to enjoy your meal at Midori and see if Chariots of Fire doesn't make you want to pump your fists before digging in to that California Roll. read more

I went to school around here and would come here to get my Japanese fix. They are a lot better than the korean sushi places in the area, but even at that it is just "ok". They have decent udon and good sushi deals on their rolls. I usually ordered the seattle roll if I was going to get sushi. They are really nice and have great service. read more

Went here with classmates after our clinicals. It was a long day and all we wanted to do was eat and relax. As soon as we entered the restaurant, friendly faces greeted us. The server gave us free soup and water and happily assisted us with the menu. We all had bento and it was good. I liked the chicken teriyaki and tempura bento. It was tasty and it was a lot for $10. Midori 5 - Late night cravings - Japanese Near Me - La Mirada, California

3.5 Stars I really really like Teriyaki. It's very hard for me to be disappointed with some rice and Teriyaki Chicken or Beef, and Midori's Teriyaki dishes do not disappoint. I highly recommend their chicken and spicy pork. The chicken is never dry and the spicy pork is tender and full of flavor. I suggest sizing up and going with the plate over the bowl. I think it's like $6 for a plate which should even satisfy a big eater. In terms of sushi, the rolls here are good but not memorable. I enjoy their Rainbow and Seattle rolls and while I do like their Crunch Rolls, I wish the crunch flakes would stick to the rolls instead of just being layered on top. A surprisingly good dish here is their Chicken Katsu Curry. While it may not be as good as Curry House or places like that, it's still good. The chicken Katsu has a good crunch and is not dry. The curry while I would like more spice to it, still maintains good flavor. Overall, Midori is my go to place for Japanese food in La Mirada. Prices are cheap and the food is consistently good, not amazing, but good. Their servers are also friendly. read more

I have always been iffy on trying new sushi places since I fell in love with Wasabi in La Habra but I am slowly branching out. My husband found this place via Yelp and we decided to head here after our first choice was closed for the fourth of July weekend. We walked in and was immediately greeted by an older man. The place is average size. Nothing Amazing really. A few seconds after sitting down, a young man brought us miso soup to sip on while looking through the menu. Prices are actually good, better than I expected. The food was super pretty and my crunch roll was hidden under crunch but that is okay because I am in love with crunch. I don't eat the raw fish so I cant give my person opinion on it but my husband said (he got the unagi roll) they didn't have enough eel on it. And when I saw it, it had a piece of eel about an inch long on it but he wasn't to heartbroken :P The portions were amazing. Normally me and my husband get our own roll and then share one and we are full but we were low on money this time so we just got our own roll and that more than filled us up. We were actually surprised on how big the portions were. Over all it was good. I think we found our new sushi place. read more

This is my first and always favorite sushi place. I'll try other sushi places, but this one is always my favorite. One of those 'hometown favorite' kinda favorites. One true favorite. Forever favorite. Why? The complimentary miso soup is always the best. I favor it mostly because they don't put onions in it, and for some reason the miso here is just the right flavor, with just enough wakame and tofu in it. Just right. A lot of places give you miso depending on what you order, but here? Before you even order anything, the waitress will bring you a hot bowl of miso. Everything else on the menu is pretty standard. I like the bento meal deals, I like the sushi rolls, I like the udon, and the appetizers are also great. They don't try anything extraordinary with their menu, it's all straightforward, which means they get to focus a lot more quality in their food rather than the frills. If I worked around there, I would go there and get lunch. Got the chicken teriyaki, CA roll, & tempura bento. Good amount of food, average taste. The CA roll was not that great. If you want sushi, I recommend you go to a sushi restaurant where you actually see the chef making the sushi. I like Blue Finn on Whittier Blvd better. I am wondering whether Midori 5, Maki Yaki, and Blue Fin Grill are the same company? Their menu looks exactly the same, down to the pictures. Midori 5 appears a little bit more restaurant-y by offering waitress service, while at Maki Yaki and Blue Finn, you order at the counter and pick up the order. read more

I ordered the chicken and beef bowl - the portion was huuuuge. The chicken was large, tender chunks - not like the overcooked chicken I get from most Japanese restaurants. It was also very flavorful. I would label this an entry level experience. It has the look of a cafe, there are limited choices, the sushi rolls are ok, but nothing to write home about. Prices for roles and sushi are on par with a nice restaurant so, there is no deal here. But, the combo plates for teriyaki are reasonable.
