Mike Anderson's, AKA "The Barbecue Joint next to the Hospital." Everything is bigger in Texas, especially the Big D (Dallas). I was told I could find barbecue pretty much anywhere in Dallas. When I found out this even applies to near hospitals, I had a sudden and strange urge for BBQ. Also remembered FREE SOFT SERVE at the restaurant, so definitely kid friendly and a complete meal. And this is where I tell you that I left the hospital for BBQ. The Food: I had the BBQ beef brisket sandwich and the Monster Baked Potato (God Bless this country). BBQ Brisket Sandwich: Consisted of a FISTFUL of sweet BBQ Beef Brisket, mashed potatoes, and baked beans. I added jalapenos, red onion, and banana peppers to spice it up and get my veggies. Overall, very meaty and filling. BBQ sauce was somewhat lacking and felt like it was missing a complex smokiness or signature taste that would make me remember it (-1 star). The brisket was satisfying, but tasted somewhat bland. I was missing the smoky and earthy flavor, the burn and char in my mouth that characterizes BBQ (-1 star). I am particularly picky about my BBQ; I want something that I cannot recreate at home, something that I know I cannot make no matter how hard I try, something with a secret spice blend, rub, or sauce, something particular and unique. This BBQ Brisket sandwich didn't do it for me. Maybe the ribs, maybe next time. Monster Baked Potato: Really felt like Idaho saves special large spuds for Mike Anderson's. I swear the potatoes looked bigger before, but maybe I was hallucinating. The Monster Potato contained cheddar cheese, green onion, BACON, BBQ sauce, sour cream, and butter. Overall very hardy and filling. Potato was fluffy and complemented well with the toppings. The secret has to be the butter, so make sure you get off your diet if you want the full experience. Paula Deen strongly recommends. Vegetarians would love this minus the bacon, plus the BBQ sauce. The Verdict: BBQ Brisket was missing on taste/flavor and originality, but was definitely filling and hearty. The Monster Baked Potato was very filling; definitely get it with all the toppings, including the Paula Deen special sauce (butter). Great for work lunch and free soft serve. WOW. Seriously amazing. It blew my mind. I was not even able to speak throughout my entire lunch. That Barbecue sauce is just unreal. If I didn't have a carry on I would have bought a few to take back home. This was my official first BBQ from Texas. Us Californians do not know a thing about barbecue. It was so good that I begged TSA to let me take my small BBQ sauce on the plane with my food. I can't wait to come back. I have lived a mile from this restaurant for over 20 years, and finally tried it this summer. Wow, I was really missing out, because this place is country-cool, right here in Dallas, and very good. The sandwich plates and three meat combos are the best deals. The meat selections are numerous, and the portions are generous. The cheesy corn bake was delicious, and I only eat corn in a casserole like this. It was great. The okra is double coated, so it's nice and crunchy. Their chocolate cake was rich, moist, and just perfect. If I ever get a chance to help choose a private dinner venue for work, I'll suggest this location. They are only open for lunch, but the space can be rented out 3-9 pm for private parties. read more

A co-worker and I went on the recommendation of our boss, and to be honest, we didn't expect much. It's not a flashy place, but the food more than makes up for it. I got a baked potato with cheese, onions, smoked chicken, and it was amazing. It's huge, and I expected to have leftovers -- no chance. I destroyed that thing, and I'm trying to figure out how many days I have to wait before I can suggest going back without looking too greedy. My friend, a self-proclaimed BBQ expert, had a two-meat platter with brisket and sausage. When I asked how it was, all he could say was "oh, hell yes." A longtime rule of thumb: to make sure the meat isn't cooked in a central kitchen and some wood burned to make you think it's there, always eat at a place where the man whose name is on the building is also the pitmaster. That's Mike behind the counter, chopping away! Lots of places for bbq in Dallas, some with far better public relations departments. But you won't find better bbq than at Mike's. We first moved to Dallas for medical reasons and found Mike's near UT Southwestern. We finally went last week and I have to say it is the best BBQ I've ever had. No joke. I had the pork ribs, brisket, and sausage with potato salad and coleslaw for sides. I didn't have to eat the rest of the day! The brisket was perfectly cooked with a great yet subtle smoky flavor. The ribs were easy off the bone and were excellent with his house sauce. Excellent potato salad and slaw. Coleslaw is my all time favorite side dish and Mike has it right. Service is cafeteria style with a large assortment of side available for self dishing out. If you're planning lunch or dinner get there early. We arrived just before noon and we were eating the line grew to almost out the door. I can't recommend this place enough. I tried to visit this place today for lunch. I walked up to order and the person preparing the plates was not wearing a mask. He asked me how he could help me and I said a mask on you for starters. His response was that is not going to happen. I can only assume it was Mike Anderson as I am sure an employee would not be allowed to get away with that. He refusal to wear a mask tells me he does not care about his customers and makes me question the safety involved in the food preparation. Not a new place on the bbq scene in Dallas, but it hasnt been on my radar in a while. I was over in the area for a job so I gave it a shot since the famous place down the street is not the friendliest or most convenient for lunch. To say i was impressed is an understatement. If you read my other reviews of bbq joints, youll know i have two classes and expectations. The famous celebrity places youll see on TV and wait in line for 4 hours to eat etc. the other group is the solid lunch or dinner places that deliver great Q, without requiring a payment plan or a full day commitment to wait in line because real adults have jobs and cant drink in lawnchairs at 10:30 am on a weekday. Mike Andersons should be a celebrity place with regards to quality, flavor and menu items, but does an awesome job at being a solid lunch or dinner for the working man on a schedule and realistic lunch budget. Mike and JoJo were two of the friendliest owners/staff ive ever interacted with at a restaurant. I was taken care of like it was a 5star dinner service at a high end place in uptown, but treated like part if the family and would never know Mike was the owner because of his humbleness and smiling, positive attitude. I used to come to Mike's at least twice a month for lunch since it's so close to school. When I came back for the first time in a couple of months, he recognized me and welcomed me back! It's set up like a cafeteria line, so you get a tray and load it up with whatever food you're feeling that day. It's quick and easy, and I'm usually in and out with my to-go order in five minutes. Parking is limited, but I always seem to find a spot! I'm all about the chopped brisket sandwich here, but they have lots of different meat options like pulled pork, pulled chicken, sausage, etc. You can either order a plate that comes with sides or get a sandwich and order your sides for $3 extra each. They always have fries, coleslaw, deviled eggs, cobbler, and tons of other "homemade sides". I love their fries! If you're not feeling the plate, you can do what I do and get the $6 BBQ sandwich with whatever meat you want OR the Double Decker for $8 which gives you two meats! There's free soft serve cones and a condiment bar that has a spicy jalepeno BBQ and a regular BBQ sauce, both of which are delicious but the spicy BBQ is definitely not for the faint of heart. Let me tell you why we suck in California. Why on earth cant I get consistently good BBQ in the golden state? I arrived after the lunch rush, when apparently the line was out the door. This is exactly what the doctor ordered. If this place was near my work in CA I would eat here every day. I ordered the meats and sides dinner plate with 3 meats and 2 sides. Brisket, pulled pork and hot link, which were awesome, with potato salad and fried okra. I was in heaven! The positives: Stay with the original sauce as the jalapeno sauce wasn't to my liking. Save room for the free soft serve cone. Fast service due to the order at counter and serve yourself sides. BAD Customer service can kill a place!!! My coworkers and I have ordered from Mike's several times. It's been our go-to for barbecue. We have even had a couple of HUGE orders to feed everyone at our monthly potluck birthday spread. The food and service has always been great in the past. Today, however, things changed unfortunately. 5 of us called in a group order to be picked up. The older lady that usually answers the phone must have been out/busy because someone else took the order. Less than 2 minutes later, one of the orderers realized they put sour cream on the baked potatos and called to ask that it be left off. They were told "that's how it comes, you'll have to eat it that way". Ummm, no.....that is NOT how you treat a customer. After the caller said that was bad customer service, the woman stated that was "too bad". Two of the people ended up calling and cancelling their orders they were so upset about the bad customer service. When the person got there to pick up the order for the remaining 3 people, the "manager" inquired about why the other people had cancelled. After he was told what happened, he complained that people changing their order cost him money and told them that there are plenty of barbecue restaurants around the area to order from. Well, sir, you are correct. Unfortunately, you just caused Mike Anderson's barbecue to lose the business of so many people. We will gladly take our business elsewhere and spend our hard-earned money at an establishment that appreciates it's customers and treats them well. You just lost so much $$$$ over what? Since I grew up in the dirty south and have the acquired palate of Memphis BBQ, I haven't been quite satisfied with Texas BBQ all the way yet. I have overcame the fact that Texas is known for beef BBQ. I learned this the hard way and have accepted it. I stumbled upon Mike Anderson's while working for one of my clients near the hospital and found that this BBQ joint has a good variety of southern food and BBQ. The location of this place can be tricky to find if you don't know where you are going. The lunch crowd takes over around 11:30. You will see a line from the door all the way to the cashier. Luckily I left for lunch at 11:15 to beat the line. If you are on a tight lunch schedule, you should plan ahead because, the line to order your food is not quite efficient. You basically tell them your protein choice of Brisket, sausage, turkey, and or pull pork sandwich. Then you get to decide on the sides. You can imagine how much time has lapsed in between customers just for that process. I ordered the pull pork and sausage sandwich, and was quite impressed with the huge bun and ample amounts of meat that the sandwich had. I also had the beef brisket, which flavorful in seasoning and just right amount of smoke. The dessert here is where the southern goodness comes out! Ohhh yeaaa mama!!! So, I am depressed because this place is only open during lunch M-F. I loved this place! I ordered the 3 meat plate (what? I couldn't decide!) With the jalapeno cheese sausage, ribs, and brisket. The sausage was hands down the best sausage I have ever had. Super cheesy and flavorful. The brisket was extremely tender and moist, and packed a flavorful smokey punch. The only part I wasn't too inpressed with were the ribs. They were still good, both juicy and tender, but they just didn't have the same amount of flavor as everything else. As a side I ordered the loaded baked potato. You.must.get.this. A huge potato that acts as your two sides stuffed with the works. It was cooked perfectly. Super flaky and soft. I mean, I am basically drooling just thinking about that potato again. My husband, who hates bbq but will eat it when I complain, ordered the stuffed baked potato with brisket. His potato was double the size of mine, and filled with brisket. For my money, Mike Anderson's is *THE* place to get barbecue in Dallas. In comparison, the Original Sonny Bryan's is hyped more for being old and their artificial "hurry or you'll miss it" scarcity in their original location, and Dickey's, Colter's and Spring Creek are too chain-y and cookie-cutter - although they'll do in a pinch. I firmly believe that Mike Anderson's is the reason I started taking my lunches early - even when I'm not going there. If you want any hope of not standing outside (especially in the winter), you'd better get there before 11:15am, because the line will be to the door by then - and you'll have to get in line behind me. The brisket is tender with a nice smoke ring and a dark bark that tells you it's been lovingly seasoned and smoked. Both it and the pulled pork can be cut with a fork, but that's not why I go. I go for the ribs and the sausage. The pork ribs are smoked to the bone, but not so much that they fall off the bone, which would make them tougher to eat. You want a rib that you can pick up and eat with your hands. They don't appear to have any seasoning other than smoke - because they don't need it. The sausage meat is not so heavily smoked, but is nice and tight, with very little grease that usually permeates pork sausage. Barbecue sauce is reddish brown and slightly sweet, which complements the smoky flavors of most of the meats rather well. Sauce is self-serve and if you don't already, I suggest ladling it into a bowl for casual dipping rather than dousing the meat with it when you're in line. A good sauce is an accompaniment and should not be a flavor substitute. As far as sides go, I'm partial to the Cheesy Corn Bake (much to the chagrin of my doctor) and the dill potato salad, which looks to be made from the leftover monster baked potatoes that don't get sold, if the pieces of potato skin in it are any indication. Barbecue beans are tangy, and are within easy reach of where Mike cuts the meat, so he can fling in all the short ends and leftover pieces of whatever he's just finished cutting. A bonus for those who know how to dig for them! What I haven't seen most people mention is the toppings bar next to the ice cream machine. Here's where you'll find two different kinds of pickles (sliced and spears), pickle relish, pepperoncinis, butter for your potato or what-have-you, more barbecue sauce if you missed it the first time (including a spicy jalapeno version!), and the unsung and hidden star - the grilled onions. Yum! About the only things I can think of that would be a negative is that parking is a pain and the area can be a bit dodgy because it's close to the county hospital. Unless someone is thinking ahead and leaves a spot open so cars can pull out through the back end of the parking lot and go around the back of the 7-11, you'll have to turn around in a really small area and squeeze past the cars (or more likely, trucks) coming the other way. read more

I went here when I came to Dallas for the Pacquiao vs. Margarito fight @ Cowboys Stadium. I Googled the closest BBQ spot from my hotel and this was it! I arrived around lunchtime so it was a perfect to see if this place gets packed or it was just another Texas BBQ. To my suprise this place was really busy. The line went all the way to the doorway and it made me more eager to see what was around the corner. It was also good to know that Mike Anderson's BBQ is not a franchise and it made my mouth savor that I will be eating at a homegrown establishment. Once I got to the counter (passing by the menu board) I was overwhelmed by the different choices I had and by default I just ordered what the person in front of me had.... A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING! The ribs, pulled pork, fried okra, mac and cheese casserole was bangin'! I was stuffed just halfway through my meal. My first trip to Mike Anderson's came with much fanfare from my brother who claimed it was the best BBQ of all times and all ages. It sure as hell didn't disappoint. First off, if you are going at lunch get there BEFORE 11:15am because it gets packed fast. I arrived at 11am and once we sat down, the line was out the door and no parking spots were available. I went with the Sloppy Mike with two sides as a suggestion and the sides were fantastic. Original, tasty, and they complimented the beef. I went with the Jalapeno BBQ sauce because I like to party and it was pretty spicy but it didn't overwhelm the sweetness of the BBQ sauce base. The cheesy corn bake was sweet like cornbread can be with the texture of stuffing. It had a pretty complex taste for a blue collar place like Mr. Anderson's here. My second side was the fries because I always judge a place by their fries and Mike's fries definitely pass. They were seasoned well and crispy without being overdone; perfect for dipping in the sauce. The atmosphere had a traditional Texas barbeque feel of western living and accents of cowhides; like I said very blue collar. There was a large patio and cramped inside seating which got very loud. I don't mind because I like to party, but it could annoy the old and boring. Mike and the guy running the register were helpful, looked you in the eye and were sincere when they asked you how you were doing and actually listened. A far cry from a pissed off 16 year old that generally are behind the counter. This made me want to come back more than anything, these are good guys that are proud and give out a good product. Overall, spectacular food and sincere staff. The only downside is how crowded it gets and the parking can suck, so get there early. I really need to go again and try their different types of meats and make a solid determination of how good this place is inside and out.
