My sister and I wanted to grab a quick and cheap bagel for breakfast, so we stopped by Mila Cafe and it was really good! I got an everything bagel with cream cheese and my sister got an everything bagel with smoked salmon, red onions, and cream cheese. She said hers was pretty good too! There's a lot of seating inside and also a patio outside for when the weather is nice. It's fun to just sit and people watch while you enjoy a bagel and coffee. Something about this neck of the woods, here in the Upper 90s, that gives you good food and cheap. I walked past this place about a million times when I've visited the neighborhood and I went in the other day, thinking they would have a take out or delivery menu available. Heck, they don't even have paper menus available for eat-in customers! I have to admit, I thought it was weird. But given all the good reviews here, I figured this was a place I *had* to try. My typical staple for a diner breakfast are two eggs, over easy, with white toast, taters and depending on my mood, bacon or sausage. Happy to see their breakfast sausage are patties, not links. I was ALL over that. My husband had their challah french toast. Both were satisfying and less than $20 once we tallied up our drinks/coffee. The coffee I could probably do without. I'm really not sure how Mila Cafe has 4 stars. Went in for brunch and ordered a pretty simple breakfast - eggs, sausage and bacon. I also tried to order water but they were out... somehow. The place in general is dirty (and not in a good way)... bathroom didn't even lock. Also the door made this incredibly high-pitched screeching sound every time someone entered or left. So after all this, I thought the food must be amazing based on its rating. Nope. It wasn't. I guess it wasn't bad... just not good. Very basic. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of cooking this place provided. Not that its the best but better than most local joints and for the price you cant go wrong. It's a small place with both tables inside and out, enough for small parties of 4 or 5 people. The place is not fancy by no definition but it puts out good food so far. How can you NOT love Tazo's Special? Fried egg, avocado, cheese and tomato on a croissant, served with a smile, and made with love. I'm so crazy about this dish that I don't even have to say what I want when I come here. They know it: Tazo's Special and a blueberry banana smoothie and dazzit! The only thing that bugs me is that quite often they run out of croissants really early on. It would be nice if they stocked up on their croissants a bit better. They also ran out of multiple fruits on more than one occasion, forcing me to pick different fruits for my smoothie and to go for bread instead of a croissant with Tazo's Special. My BF and I went here on a Sunday at 1pm. He got a greek salad, and I got challah French toast. The total came to $10 or $12. The salad was really, really, really fresh, full of grape tomatoes, black and green olives (with pits) and tons of great feta. Really a very good salad. Oil and vinegar bottles came on the side. The French toast was really good!! I mean, it's hard to mess up challah...it was served with strawberry jam, butter, and fake syrup. (I'm a syrup snob, and I still thought it was good). I find it funny that this place is Greek, yet all the the staff are Spanish speaking. The prices are very reasonable and the food as well. If you don't like quaint and simple you will not like this place. Decent for fairly big groups but if school is in session you may want to avoid the hours of 11-1pm since they are loud and obnoxious. On a recent trip to NYC, we stayed in the area and were looking for a cheap, local place to eat. This one popped up as being nearby and it worked for the day. We ate in but I wouldn't recommend that. I ordered 3 egg whites with wheat toast, honey turkey and a fruit bowl which was quite on the large side. My sister ordered something from the menu with hot chocolate. Service was quick. The best banana smoothie I have ever had. The best egg white omelette I have ever had. The best yogurt, fruit and and granola bowl I have ever had- and this can be done very very wrong. You want french toast, they have very good french toast. You want an egg sandwich, they have a wonderful egg sandwich. Being a deli they can make pretty much anything you want and they use a grill to do it. Breakfast on a grill is how breakfast was supposed to be. It makes anything from pancakes and french toast to eggs, muffins and egg sandwiches in a way that tastes better and unique. You will not be wowed by anything on the menu as the best you ever had. This does not take the place of your favorite brunch spot that offers eggs and french toast at $12-$24 a plate. With that being said, you can come into this quiet neighborhood deli, order whatever you're in the mood for, have it brought to your table and enjoy. The staff is friendly and the same people are there all the time. Keep in mind the prices are very reasonable, but it is CASH ONLY. It was absolutely lovely to come in on a snowy weekend and find individual UWS'ers trudge in, grab some grub and coffee, and read the news / magazine articles on PAPER. Mila has several tables and chairs so you can sit and enjoy without waiting for a server to take your order or being hinted at to leave when you're done with your food. The food is of diner quality but it is cheap and filling and decent. What else could you want from a no-nonsense breakfast?? The coffee is also great and I'm a bit of a coffee snob. I ordered two eggs over medium with home-fries, bacon and rye toast. They forgot the potatoes but doubled up on the bacon which I would typically be fine with but the bacon was cold, waxy, greasy - just gross. As I sat there eating I was literally thinking how on earth this place stays open and if it was a front or something. Found this place by chance when walking to Central Park and I looked for a breakfast place. Got here, and ordered the Cream Cheese bagel with Tomato on a Onion bagel and the a sesame bagel with jelly, both toasted. This place is not very attractive from the outside although it seems pretty busy -- but not in a sense that you have to wait for a long time. Good busy. The person taking the orders is very friendly especially concerning the tempo they have to work in. Its a constant stream of people ordering to go and eat in. The cream cheese with tomato bagel was very good, cream cheese is applied generously as well as the thick slices tomato. Jelly bagel was also good! A good place for brunch, but nothing to blow your mind away. Mila Cafe has squished seating on the inside (if...you can grab a table on a weekend morning) and order-at-the-counter service. Prices are pretty good - most dishes are between $4-7. I had an omelet, replete with feta cheese, tomatoes, and peppers. The ingredients were satisfying, but the omelet lacked that ooomph - it was pretty flat and too brown around the edges to make it anything spectacular. (Omelets are $6.50 and you can choose 3 fillers. They also come with a side of bread and too-finely chopped hash browns). My husband and brother in law, with whom I dined, both got an order of eggs, bacon, and their challah bread french toast. It was good - and those are my words, the girl who doesn't eat french toast. Mila Cafe saved our starving and frozen stomachs on a cold Sunday morning, but it was nothing out of the ordinary in terms of New York breakfast joints. read more

I love Mila. The food is great, the service is friendly, and the people who work there seem happy. They have a good variety of food and the prices are fabulous. They have covered outdoor seating. The food comes from Mani Marketplace, the supermarket across the street, which has the same owner. My only complaints are: -- this place is understaffed. There are typically two or three people behind the counter, who share duties taking orders, cooking, pouring coffee, and carrying the orders outside. Despite not having a waitstaff or busboy, they still carry everything out for you -- so please don't forget to put money in the tip jar. During rush hours, ordering takes a lot of patience. But the food is great, way above typical diner fare, and the outdoor seating is worth it. -- Due to limited space, they have no fresh fruit options. Get your fruit at Mani Marketplace, and eat it here. -- they close too early (5pm). If there's no money to be made selling coffee & sandwiches after 5pm, why does Starbucks stay open until midnight? -- all plastic silverware, napkins and straws are behind the counter. If you forget to get them with your order, you need to ask for them, which means waiting as much as 5 minutes. They really need to put those things in the open. You should definitely support this cafe. It's the only one of its kind, and its closest competitor -- Jackson Hole -- is ten blocks south. read more

This place was pretty awesome! My friend and I were visiting New York for the weekend and were looking for cheap breakfast and coffee and found this place. It was within walking distance of where we were staying (right in front of Central Park) and was easy to find upon arrival. It's small but charming and everything was delicious. So delicious (and cheap!) that we came back the following day for brunch! It's cash only, but we figured that out the hard way and had to walk to the Walgreens next door to get some cash but it was so worth it! There's indoor and outdoor seating but the weekend we were there it was literally 98+ degrees and we were like noo...we need some a/c! I got the Milano panini which was very delish with an iced mocha on the side...also very delish (pictured below).
