We came here on a Sunday over a holiday weekend, so I guess it was busier than normal because staff were barely seen. Inside was a long room with tables down the walls and down the middle of the place. We were seated right away even though our name was 4 down on the waitlist. There is a QR code, but our server still brought by the paper menu. Before he left our table, we asked for water for the table. So we browsed then waited for almost 10 min before anyone came back to take our order. Still no water, but our order went in. Our banchan came out then the first ordered bibimbap dish within 5-7 min. Still no water for the table at this point, so we flagged someone carrying pitchers around to help us. Finally after some time after ordering we got our water. After the water, we got our next two dishes, the grilled beef ribs and dumpling soft tofu. The grilled beef ribs were good but really sweet. Definitely need the purple rice to eat with it. The tofu soup came out hot but not boiling. And I still tried to cook my raw egg in the broth. The egg eventually did cook enough to eat. It wasn't that busy inside the restaurant so I did not get why it took a while to get a basic thing like water and our order in. This place has been around for 25 years. The secret has been out for many years, their Korean barbecue short ribs are my absolute favorite. One of the best Korean tofu soup in the area! The restaurant is located in a very busy plaza, but there should be more than enough free parking spots here. The servers were quick to sit you down and take your orders. During peak hours, you might have to put your names down on a wait-list. We really wished they would give us water more often though. We each got one small tint cup of water and they barely checked in or gave us more water until we flagged them down. The inside was just a normal-looking restaurant with very minimal interesting decorations. Their restrooms could use a little upgrades, but it was decent. No keys, no passcode. We ordered a Dumpling Tofu Soup, mild spicy. Which we really liked it. The tofu texture was really soft and didn't feel grainy. The flavor and seasoning were also on point! It also came with an egg, which you will crack into the soup when it's still piping hot. Mild spicy level wasn't too spicy, but had enough kick to it. My friends ordered two tofu soups though, and I have to say - I'm surprised at the changes. In the past, when you ordered tofu soup, each order gets their own individual bento box with side dishes. Now, they give you one singular side dish box in the middle of the table. Don't get me wrong, they still pack the side dishes to the brim with generous amounts, but this change in general surprised me. The side dishes were still delicious as usual though! The naengmyeon was a huge portion, which is nice considering it's $21. The dish came out with a refreshing broth -- plenty of ice chunks in the broth. It was a Tuesday night (election night!) and we were craving Korean food and comfort from a night of disappointment, and found this place not too far from where we had an appointment in Milpitas. The place was hopping for a weeknight. Fortunately we were seated pretty quickly. We ordered tofu stew (chicken), ramen with dumplings, and grilled beef. Everything was super tasty! We were a little confused at first as we didn't see any of the small banchan dishes at the other tables, and were starting to get disappointed, but then it was brought out to us in these plastic compartmentalized to-go containers. It was my husband, my teen son and I and they gave us two normal sized containers and one smaller container for my son - half a star off for that because my teen can eat more than me and we ordered three things, so we shouldn't have gotten a smaller container! Ambiance was fine, but another half a star off because service could have been friendlier, plus they were busy and seemed to need more help. Been coming here when I was young but probably no longer - SO much plastic all of a sudden, what the heck?! They've always used throwaway chopsticks, but now there are plastic cups for water and paper cups for tea - definitely used to have actual cups. Banchans are given in a plastic container that looks like they're used for bento boxes, but why? They used to have plates, so what happened to them? So sad. The food is still good - tofu soups are the best I've had in the US, love their banchans (kimchi, japchae, and fish cakes are awesome). Super pricey though, on the menu it said $19.60 but on the receipt I was given, it said $21, no idea why. I got #2 on the tofu soup menu which was beef, scallop, shrimp, clams - I substituted the clams with mushrooms, asked for no rice. The food was fantastic. the tofu was silky, soup flavorful, and clams were cleaned and fresh. The short ribs were well marinated, not too oily, and a generous portion. Reason for the 3 stars has to do with how they now serve their rice and banchan now. "Back in the day" they used to be in individual dishes that you could get refills of. The rice was also served in a giant stone pot. Once it was empty, they would fill the pot with hot tea so that you could have a rice porridge. Since covid, they started serving the rice and banchan in individual plastic bento boxes, which also cut back on the number of banchan offered. Ambiance This place used to be packed and tables arranged tightly, but COVID changed how they operate. Tables are more sparsely arranged, with the high ceiling and light colored walls, somehow it felt cold and uninviting. Maybe that's just me. But the good thing was that there was no wait and for those who want more privacy, definitely better than before. Was there at peak lunch time and there was always empty tables. Back then before COVID the wait time was insane. Service Understaffed. Initial ordering time was ok, took about 15 minutes for our food to come out. When we were done, took another 5-10 min to get our check. I think there were only two servers taking care of the 15+ tables. Not the servers' fault, they were trying their best running around all the time. Food The banchan/side dishes no longer flow freely. They now came in a to-go box, not sure why. I would think this cost them a lot more than having the banchan in washable small plates. Maybe it actually saves them money from having to pay someone to wash those. The kimchi was spicy and tasty with the right amount of tang, not watery like some places or like the ones you buy at the supermarket. The rest was typical bean sprout, fish cake, etc. I like the purple rice that came with it instead of white rice in the past. But I do miss the nurungji burnt rice soup that they used to do on stone pot. The dubu/tofu dish were good. Got medium spicy and it was spicy. I had the pike mackerel and wife had the octopus. They did not skim on the mackerel and octopus. Problem was the inconsistency. We both ordered medium spicy, mine was a bit more spicy than expected and also a lot more salty. Hers was bland and not spicy at all. Maybe the understaffed server impacted their consistency more than I thought. Another thought that I had, was the pike mackerel actually mackerel, or were those sardines? Cost/Tips Practice Cost per dish has gone up significantly compared to pre-COVID. It is now just under $20 for a dubu dish. But considering the amount of food, not too bad. Paper bill with suggested tips at 18% as lowest option, or choose custom tip amount.
