I was so excited after Jim Reynolds cut my hair that I had to take a selfie in the car! (Don't judge.)
    Marla H.

This is a review for Jim Reynolds who is an amazingly talented hair stylist. His profile on Mimi & Coco's website is humble and dramatically understated which fits Jim's personality. He is friendly, unassuming, and has an outstanding customer service orientation. However, that profile does not really do justice to his totally mad hair skillz. I have been looking for a good hair stylist since I moved to Silicon Valley three years ago, drifting about listlessly, unsatisfied, and going weeks and weeks between haircuts just to avoid the trauma of crappy stylists. And then I found Jim. (This is the part where the clouds open and angels sing.) I have very fine hair but a TON of it. And it's straight. I am completely happy with my hair color, gray and all, and am infuriated when stylists who don't know how to cut hair suggest that what I need is color to compensate for their lack of skill. I like to wear my hair short (see pictures) but have had a hard time getting anyone to cut it short enough (cowards!). Although my hair is fine, I have a ton of it so I need a stylist who is not afraid to really cut into it and texturize the bejeezus out of it. When I sat down with Jim and explained what I wanted, he confidently went to work. He checked in with me throughout the cut to make sure we were headed in the right direction and was able to address all of my concerns with beautiful solutions. He had the vision and skill to get right to business and when he was finished I seriously almost broke down crying in the salon because I was so happy. As a bonus, Jim's personality makes it a delight to be in his chair. I'm going to go ahead and address other reviews of this salon in Jim's defense. One issue other reviewers have raised is with the salon's reception desk. It is true that the salon is a chair rental establishment which means that each stylist is, essentially, running his or her own business. The reception desk has been hit and miss for me as far as customer service, but after you've seen Jim you'll have his direct contact information. He has been very responsive via both voice and text. Another theme seems to be that this is a salon for old ladies. The salon is in Los Altos for goodness sake! Yes, there are often a lot of old ladies in there. But Jim is not an old lady hair designer. I mean, I'm sure he does lovely hair cuts for women of all ages. But if you are a younger person, you can be confident that Jim will take care of you. He is using current techniques and methods and is excited about delivering the best style for his clients' wishes, hair type, and head shape.

Jeanne is very current with styles and she is a master colorist and cutter - two things that are critical to me.

I was happy to be flexible and later arrived 10 minutes early. When I walked in I noticed there wasn't a designated waiting area for clients. Then later I was told that my appointment had been forgotten and that a walk-in had been taken instead. I was understandably a little disappointed, but I remained understanding. A little after another nail tech. came from the back and was able to help me. Before we began, I communicated twice that I was there for a builder gel fill. I've had this service done many times, so I'm familiar with the filing process. However, much more product was filed away than I've ever experienced during a fill, which seemed to defeat the purpose of getting one. The filing also felt quite aggressive. While I understand the need to work efficiently, I experienced a burning sensation several times, and the technician even applied pressure to the top of my nail to help relieve the discomfort. After this happened repeatedly, I no longer felt comfortable continuing with the UV curing process because I was concerned about the sensitivity of my nails. I explained that I had changed my mind and would instead like to receive only cuticle care and nail shaping. The technician asked a coworker to assist with translation, but unfortunately, the interaction didn't feel welcoming. I calmly explained again that I wasn't comfortable placing my nails under the UV light and wanted to give them time to recover. The coworker appeared visibly frustrated and responded by pressing firmly on my nail and rubbed her finger against it to demonstrate that the builder gel was still present. The original technician completed the cuticle care and nail shaping, and I paid for her time and service. I appreciate that she finished the appointment, but overall, the experience did not leave me wanting to return. I also think the salon could benefit from a designated waiting area for clients and some soft background music to create a more welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.

Eventually, another woman came to get me. I booked my appointment a few days in advance, so I wasn't expecting to wait outside, but I understand that the business was very busy. To preface, I enjoy getting pedicures, but I don't use polish or gel because I prefer not to have anything artificial on my nails. My service was done much sooner than everyone else who had been sitting in the chairs before I arrived, possibly because I didn't use polish or gel? The chair was comfy, and the person who did my pedicure was kind, but it felt rushed since someone else was waiting for a pedicure chair. While I enjoyed the experience, I didn't think it was worth $50 plus tip. Because it's so close to where I live, I'll likely give them another shot on a quieter day to see if the experience is less rushed.

Kathy was my technician for my first time at Kitchen Nail Bar. She was thorough and attentive, and she took great care of me. I did the essential pedi and she timed a 5 minute foot and leg massage which was a nice touch. I was really happy with Kathy's cuticle work too. The salon is quiet and relaxing, even if a bit tight. The only thing that was disappointing was the nail polish for my mani. The polish was dried out and a bit chunky, so it looks thicker than I would have preferred, even though the top coat smoothed out the streakiness. Hopefully it lasts. Overall, would come here again, and just speak up if the polish isn't as smooth as preferred.

As this was my first time here, I went with any available nail artist. I was luckily assigned to Lee. Lee brought my manicure inspiration photos to life and noticed the small details I didn't event realize were in my inspo photos! I came in wanting beach themed nails for a wedding and I walked out super super happy- I couldn't stop looking at my nails after she finished. I don't often get my nails done and I am grateful to how kind and patient Lee was with her recommendations for the nail art. She is super meticulous in all from shaping my nails to noticing the finest details of my inspo photos to checking in with me often if I liked the art that was in progress. I am definitely coming back to Kitchen Nail Bar MV for the next time I need my nails done for a special occasion. Thank you, Lee!

I typically do not write this kind of review, but the service I received on 6/14 was unacceptable…read moreand I could not get over how it soured my day. I had a Groupon for a pedicure here, and upon reviewing their website noted that they had 20% off for their opening and that gel nails were 45, so even though I normally go to Enjoy Nails in Palo Alto I thought why the heck not, I'll go here this week. The establishment is fine, but the woman who greeted me was on the phone, and remained on the phone while she started my pedicure. Any semblance of a "heavenly" spa experience was gone. A second woman came later, who started my nails, filing them down to thin stubs. Then we moved to the table, at which point the woman that had been doing my toes (who by the way, didn't wear a mask the entire time I was there) began blow drying her hair right behind me. Unhygienic and unprofessional. The manicurist finished my hands, at which point both women wandered into the back, seeming unsure of what to do next. Then the pedicurist/apparent hair stylist in training walked out on the phone again, demanding 55. I explained that wasn't what was on the website, pulling out the list for them to see. She saw the listed price, then got back into a heated conversation on the phone, at which point she hands the phone to me, informing me that it's the owner. This woman is ultimately why I wrote this review. If you want to create loyal clientele at your new business, I wouldn't recommend yelling at them over the phone. Nor would I recommend trying to bargain: this is a business, not a flea market. She insists that the service I received (pictured below, as well as what I had asked for) was not gel, but dip, despite my initial request over the phone and in person for gel and that my total was 55. I again showed the menu, and the pedicurist woman took pictures of my phone for her boss, but she continued to yell at my that it was 55. Then she said she could do 20% off 55 for 45. That's just not even the correct math. I really just wanted to leave at this point, as I was tired of being berated and paid the 44 (20% of 55) plus tip. They only accept Venmo or Zelle, which is beyond sketchy. The pedicurist then apologized to me, saying that she has to call her boss because if they get the wrong price they get yelled at. Not only do the employees not know what the prices are, the owner is rude to them. I wholeheartedly do not support this establishment and will not be returning.
