After spending our first day exploring Balboa Park with our good friends, our ladies were craving chocolate. I went to grok on X to research best chocolate stores in San Diego and Mission Heights Chocolates came up as the best. We drove over and realized we were late. We rang the bell and the owner, Dan, opened the door and invited us in. He was very friendly and offered some samples that were off the charts. We ended up purchasing several different kinds of chocolates and our ladies were very happy. If you are in San Diego area and desire some chocolate, don't hesitate to visit Dan and his wife! Dubai chocolate bars? Yes! Found this gem of a chocolatier after a quick charge of the car around the corner and on my way to Mission Beach. I'm so glad they were open and answered the front door. It's a store, but when you walk up to the front door, you have to ring the doorbell. A friendly and helpful employee will answer and let you in. It feels like a speakeasy for a chocolate shop, but just not secret. The interior will comfortably fit 2 adults and a child - just a counter to view all the deliciousness and order to go. They make everything in-house - the chocolate truffles were scrumptious. The big winner were the Dubai chocolate bars - which will run you $20. Worth every penny. If you haven't gotten your hands on one yet, come here and get one in the regular flavor or Nutella version. They also ship - and I'm sure around the holidays I'll be placing my online order to fill stockings and during a time when the chocolate won't melt. read more

Wow! If you have Christmas shopping to do, this is the place! When you walk in, you can see the chocolates being made by hand behind the counter. A wide variety of interesting flavors, and different items than you usually see! There's definitely something for everyone here. I got a chocolate salami for my charcuterie-minded daughter, hot chocolate and homemade marshmallows for a friend who drinks the stuff like it's water, and some unique flavored chocolates for a gourmet friend. You can park in the lot to the left of the building, though it says it's for a chiropractor, as long as you don't stay too long! This is a great spot to shop local for delicious products. Only discovered this artisanal chocolatier due to its collaboration with Evans Hotels, as a guest of the Bahia Resort. Upon checking into my suite, I got a box of 4 flavors including dark chocolate, salted caramel, and black currant truffle. In particular I like the designs including logos of the Bahia Resort and its Dockside Restaurant. Great flavors but personally I'm less fond of the fruity texture. read more

Im a late bloomer so I never got it until the Owner did an Impromptu Master Class on how Chocolate works. There is way more to it than tastiness. Where it's sourced, did they use wax to make it. And the love that goes into making it. I'm not gonna give away spoilers I'm from So-Cal but the story of the owners and the logo is totally dipped in chocolate when they started. What got me to look for this place was a Reddit post where is someone had said Americans don't know what chocolate it's supposed to taste like. Then I saw a box of Belgian chocolate at Costco after eating a few I looked for a local chocolate maker. I totally did the Pepsi challenge and the confections here at the store in your own backyard is amazing simply amazing. Its right here in SD not far from Liberty Station over there by that Home Depot and Petco. I am a changed person. What a fun and delightful and Delicious experience! This tiny little house is like a little Willy Wonka oasis in the middle of the grimy Midway strip. You have to go and visit! The creativity is off the charts - chocolate records, Chinese food boxes of black sesame honey chocolates, a chocolate "salami"... there were just too many things to recall but the kid in me was so excited! They create most of their offerings on site which is fun to see from behind the cash register. Camille the owner was gracious, handing out samples and talking about the various goodies! I could barely focus as my eyes were darting from one extraordinary creation to the next. Left with a mixed box of house made truffles with very exotic (and some traditional) ingredients, a Chinese takeout box of black sesame honey chocolates and a passionfruit guava mango pineapple filled dark chocolate bar (soooo delicious)! Mission Heights Chocolate makes my favorite sea salt milk chocolate caramels EVER. The first time I found them was in Allen's Flowers in La Mesa. I never liked salt with my chocolate, but these babies converted me! I am extremely happy Mission Heights opened a shop in San Diego because I can now buy these caramels whenever I want, without having to hope Allen's has it in stock. Mission Heights also has a wide collection of different flavors designed to be anyone's favorite box of chocolates. My daughter loves the lemon creams, my husband prefers the passion fruits, and my son - no surprise - loves the sea salt milk chocolate caramels (mostly because nothing tastes better than taking Mom's favorites from her). Special mention: The hazelnut buddhas are so fun and contain whole hazelnuts! (And that makes them a nutritious choice, right?) read more
