3 stars for derive, 4 star for cupcakes! Cupcake was good! Quality ingredients it seemed, tasted pretty good! I prefer a sweeter cake. I got 2 cupcakes of different cake flavors and they weren't very sweet and dense so some bites I wondered "am I eating a muffin?" The frosting itself was very sweet so it all balances out. The were fresh and as described, everything had a distinct flavor. It wasn't just a sweet mound, but distinct layers of flavor. Though they didn't have the cherry almond which I really wanted to try, I was satisfied! The service was disappointing. I told the person behind the counter it was my first time there and they said "let me know when you're done" there was no "welcome!" "Any flavors you enjoy or are looking for?" "We are known for xyz, take your time!" "May I recommend xyz", it was just let me know when you're done. All the excitement I had deflated in an instant and I considered leaving. They weren't busy, there was 5 people behind the counter and I was the only customer. Not one to be deterred by someone else's lack of enthusiasm, I still purchased. Mix Bakeshop bakes unreal deliciousness. They seem to make everything from scratch. the crust holds like a baby cherub before crumbling at each bite; and the rest of the pie is 95% coconut. I am a happy girl! Today was my first trip to Mix, I was in search of their Star Wars tasties. Sad for me, but fantastic for them they were sold out! It took everything to hold the tears back (I'm playin') so I picked the s'mores and red velvet cupcakes. No one in their right mind would leave a bakery empty handed. As I was cashing out one of the ladies behind the counter said she had one Darth fondant cupcake topper. I told her I'd take it! She even placed in nicely on one of the cupcakes I had purchased. What a great thing she happened to have an extra one and I had been in the right place at the right time. I wanted to surprise someone special with a little treat and everything worked out perfectly! However as I was about to leave they came up and said we can put one together right now. It made our whole day!!!! Everything they had looked AMAZING! However the three ladies behind the register were more interested in talking amongst themselves than helping guests. Only one lady was helping guests and she was earning her paycheck! Waited about 5 minutes before I got frustrated and left. Not Impressed. After I found out Batch had left Reno, I set out to find another cupcake shop. I found Mix Cupcake online and decided to give them a try. I purchased 4 different cupcakes during my visit: vanilla bean, carrot, strawberry, and chocolate with chocolate frosting. For $2.50 a piece, the cupcakes were not very big. The vanilla bean cupcake had almost no flavor and butter cream frosting was pretty sweet, but average. My brother really liked the strawberry cupcake. He basically inhaled it and asked where the cupcake shop was located. :) My husband loves carrot cake. After one bite of the carrot cupcake, he scraped all of the icing off and ate the cake. He said the frosting was not good at all (cream cheese frosting), but the cake was decent. The chocolate cupcake was a mess. The cake did not hold together very well, it just kind of crumbled all over the place. read more

Thank goodness Mix Cupcake Co. is across town from me or else I would probably gain a lot of weight! I initially was planning on coming in today (Saturday) and just getting two cupcakes; one for me and one for my husband. But, somehow, upon walking in, I decided I would order a half dozen. We got two espresso love, two red velvet, one peanut butter, and one pretty please with cherry on top. We got the cupcakes a bit before noon, and they are now gone! Oh my goodness...the cupcakes were amazing!!! Their flavors blend together pefectly. Red Velvet is normally my favorite, but I think the espresso and peanut butter were my favorites today. However, I do have to mention that the red velvets are pretty close to pefect - and they don't turn you mouth red, like the other local cupcake companies' cupcakes do. I found them on Facebook, so when you are looking for the flavors they are offering, look on their facebook page. Also, a few times a week, they have Mix Cupcakes at my favorite local deli - Brados, which is also a major plus. read more

Mix is my faaaaavorite cupcake place in Reno. The cupcakes are bomb.com, with lots of amazing flavor options to choose from. The cakes themselves are moist, and they come piled high with lots of flavored frostings and/or full of tasty centers. I can't highlight any particular flavor combo because I usually eat them too quickly to take notes, but I promise that you'll want one in your face. Customer service is prompt and friendly, too (and you may even get a free cupcake with Yelp check-in)! Mix also offers cookie decorating classes, which are as affordable as they are fun. I recommend signing up way in advance of when you want to go (because they do sell out), and take a friend so you can struggle/succeed together. They supply you with all the tools/materials, make the process super easy, and you get to go home with seven or eight delicious cookies. I would take this class again and again! In short -- eat Mix Cupcakes, often and in multiples. read more

Let me give you some background here...I have never been a fan of cupcakes or the whole designer cupcake frenzy. In fact, I went to NYC and had a couple Magnolia cupcakes: super cute but nothing to write home about. Dry. Gross frosting. Flash forward to today....I had to go to Mix to pick up an order of cupcakes that my friend had placed for her daughters birthday. My 3 year old son begged me for a cupcake so I gave in and bought a couple for him and his sister. We took them home....had lunch...then had the cupcakes. HELLO. WHAT?! They were AMAZING. AMAZING. As a self defined frosting and cake hater I crammed this cupcake in my face and never looked back. I want more. LOTS more. Thank goodness the birthday party for my friends daughter is tomorrow. Well - this is a review based on service only because I ordered the cupcakes online and have them delivered to my customer directly. So, no, I did not know how they tasted. I ordered them on this Tuesday afternoon and requested them to deliver on Wed by noon. I sent an email in the morning to make sure it will be there, I got an email from Mary from the store who told me they will be on their way shortly, nice response. After maybe an hour I already got a message from my customer who appreciated the cakes :). He had some bad days so I was hoping to send him something sweet. They are no better than Batch Cupcakery! In fact, I like Batch far better and I do not know why Mix gets 4.5 stars when Batch gets ONLY 3 stars. I know my preference could be very subjective but Mix is no better than Batch for sure. Mix's cupcakes were very dry. Maybe we went in at the wrong time and day...(Wednesday noon), or we picked the wrong flavors. I never felt the great pleasant shock when I tasted Mix's cupcake which I had with Batch; moist, creamy, great combinations with surprise. Also, they both cost $2.50 each but Mix's cupcakes are smaller, I believe. We tried; Classic Red Velvet, Extreme Vanilla Bean, Chocolate Merry-mint, Triple Chocolate Temptation. I have come out of my yelp hibernation to talk about balls. Sorry mom. But seriously. I stopped in to get a snack and picked out the four flavors of cake balls they had. I tried the german chocolate one and I am hooked. It was soo amazingly cakey and rich and not overly sweet that I needed more cake balls immediately. The person I was with had the red velvet cake one and echoed my delight. I even stopped by on my way home to get more, but they were closed. If I didn't live across town, I would probably go into major debt (and possibly diabetes) all because of cake balls. Ok, so I happened to stop into this place today while dropping something off at the UPS store nearby. I have heard of the name and from what I remembered they were supposedly good. So I brought some home to the boyfriend. A peanut butter one and one of the vanilla orange beer lavender ones. We each had half of the pb one and were full! and had an instantaneous sugar high. They were very good. The cake was moist and the buttercream was smooth and not too overwhelming. We are saving the other one for later :) or as long as I can last walking by it while it calls my name. Their selection was nice, I thought it was thorough without being overwhelming and as it was I wanted to buy one of each. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the price. Apparently this is a good price for cupcakes ($2.50 each) but I'm not so sure about that. I mean, compared to SF everything is cheap! The red velvet cupcake was good, moist cake and the cream cheese frosting decent. The yellow cake is also good, moist but the vanilla bean frosting is way too sweet for my taste. Mix Bakeshop never ceases to amaze me! I've been ordering for two years now for very special occasions & not once have I been disappointed. The first time was for a first birthday party, I chose the beach scene sugar cookies from the website to go with the Hawaiian theme. They were a hit! Even my husband's bosses loved them! The second time was for a second birthday party, it was Too Two Ballerina themed so I requested some type of cookie to go with it. I left it up to the creative team, never saw the design & was so happy when I saw them for the first time. They were the softest pink & white ballerina slippers & tutu ever! At that party I was approached by the son of our good friends. He was 6 & planning his 7th birthday party. He requested his very own sugar cookies so of course, I had to say yes! He decided on a verocilaptor theme. Again, I ordered cookies, this time something in a dinosaur please... and I could not have been more pleased! They were absolutely gorgeous. Superb customer service! My husband drove down to get a Lemon Chess pie & they had just promised their last one to another customer via phone. They gave it to us instead stating they would make another one for that customer. The lemon chess pie is to-die-for ... the crust is flaky and sweet, the filling has just the right amount of lemon so it isn't too tart & is soft and decadent. Even better if you heat it just a little bit and put some whip cream on top. The bakery is great size, clean, and has a lot of options to choose from. We will definitely be back for more! read more

MIX is one of my favorite goodie spots! Mary and her team have been baking yummy treats for my son & his classmates for 5 years now. They have yet to disappoint. What's nice is that they will do custom orders as long as you give them a couple of weeks notice. I recently ordered Minion cupcakes from the Despicable Me movie for my son's birthday. I've used Mix twice and never been disappointed. The cookies are always beautiful and they taste so good! Love her presentation. Each cookie is individually wrapped in a cellophane bag and tied with a ribbon (she will even seek out what you need, if she doesn't have it!). She packages them very carefully with paper grass and then in a really cute box. There are usually one or two that break in transit. I'm sure this is unavoidable, because they are very well packed. She always gives you an extra or two, so it is no big deal. Would highly recommend if you need a party favor (I used them for a bridal shower and for my son's graduation party) or a special "thank you". She does great work and is very reliable. I ordered my cupcakes for my sister's baby shower through Mix and I was very impressed. They turned out exactly how I wanted them and were such a hit. I paid $2 per topper. Brought the toddlers out after a doctors appointment for a special treat and we were delighted by the moist, sweet cupcakes on display. I loved that the best sellers were up on the walls with detailed descriptions on them. My son wouldnt let me know anything about his carrot cake cupcake (so I am guessing it was good) and my Monkey Business was to die for, that cream cheese frosting tied the whole thing together, it truly was divine. Been to Mix several times and used them for events at the office and would take them to clients. Always moist and flavorful with a job well done on the decorating. They are creative with trying new things; love the St Patricks day Buckbean cupcakes! I also completely disagree with "Smile B" below, having been a baker myself for over 15 years and a judge of baked foods at a local county fair - I've only tried Batch's cupcakes once (when a coworker brought a variety of a dozen to the office). While Batch's cupcakes looked beautiful they were all slightly over-baked causing them to be dry. So far I have yet to have a bad cupcake at Mix. Mix Cupcakes will also deliver. I ordered 3 dozen cupcakes and 2 dozen cookies from this place on Thursday morning for a Saturday delivery. I live in the Bay Area, but we were have a birthday party at Circus Circus. This place had good reviews plus they deliver. DONE! The party was Sunday, and the cupcakes lasted just fine from Saturday until Sunday without refridgeration (I asked ahead of time if they would). They delivered promptly on time. So we eat our pizza and now it's time for the cupcakes and cookies.
