This place is packed with locals who know where good sushi is served! We do not have a reservation but were seated promptly and give. ice water with cucumber, which was a nice touch. We knew we wanted monkey brain for an appetizer because it was the most popular item on the menu and sounded amazing. It did not disappoint! We should have ordered two as the kids inhaled it! Then came our rolls which were really good size! I dont usually order spicy so I went with the Black Tiger which was more of a sweet and savory roll. It was delicious! Great starter is the HH Monkey Brain for $7. Pass on simple gyoza. Rice texture just ok. Roll prices are cheaper than most sushi spots. The bonus is the draft beer selection you can drink from next door at Roscoe's. Most do not pair with raw fish, but if you enjoy craft beer, Roscoe's has a respectable tap rotation when Asian beer is not your thing. Service laid back & friendly like you are a regular. Poor service. Quoted 15-20 minutes wait for a party of 4 people on a Monday evening but ended up waiting 30. Staff took excessively long to clean and set our table. The table they sat us at was open for at least 5 minutes before anyone came to seat us. The wait for food was long. The server was inattentive, often talking to co-workers. My water glass was left empty for the duration of dinner until the server refilled it at the end. The edamame was mushy and tasted like it was microwaved too long. We came in on Labor day and mostly picked them because they were one of the few places open. The staff was warm and welcoming and we got to order as soon as we were ready. we got Monkey brains -5/5 Chef`s choice -5/5 Salmon Roe and Hokkaido scallops -5/5 Basically everything that came out of the kitchen was a masterpiece and I can't seem to find a single thing that didn't taste fantastic including the sake they recommended. Space isn't too big to accommodate many at the same time and it could potentially be the reason for the long wait times. Miyamoto Sushi doesn't look like a sushi restaurant, but it definitely delivers where it counts! The staff is very friendly, competent, and patient, and know their wares very well. Our waitress happily made recommendations, and they didn't disappoint. I was especially appreciative of their unique preparation of the hamachi kama. They score several cuts in it, and marinate it some sort of citrus marinade. I LOVE hamachi kama, and Miyamoto's preparation is outstanding. Another unexpectedly great item, and probably what I enjoyed the most, was the "Tokyo Tea" beverage. It is a magical non-alcoholic fizzy tea beverage with Yuzu and other flavors. I find myself wanting to come back here just for the Tokyo Tea. I was also very appreciative of the availability of shumai. Nigiri has larger pieces of fish than most, which isn't necessarily a good thing because the balance of fish to rice when executed perfectly is magical. Rolls were more of a hit-and-miss affair...none were bad, but a few of our choices seemed a bit odd in their ingredient selection. Prices are moderate, and portion sizes are good (no gimmicky giant rolls, and no tiny rolls). Parking can be a challenge because it is all street parking, and the area is generally very busy. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Miyamoto in all these years. This is my neighborhood sushi restaurant, the place where I would get takeout during CoViD, the place that immediately become OUR sushi spot after the very first visit! Why? There are so many reasons, but let's start with the sushi itself... The fish has always been so wonderful. One of our favorites is the Chikashi, an amazing deal with so many different cuts, as well as almost every side you can imagine, from ikura to wakame salad, shredded beets (so much more flavorful than daikon)... oh, it's a joy. I love the sashimi here, especially salmon and, when I want a real treat, the Ora King Salmon. Ora is the only salmon farm that does not harm the environment, produces fish on a par with Copper River and... is right here in Oregon. It's spectacular. But even the humble Mackerel is so good here. Mackerel is almost the test for whether a sushi place is good. If it is less than ultra-fresh, because it is so oily, it tastes too strong. But, when it's fresh, like the best Uni (also great here), it tastes of the sea in a way indescribable. Here, it's so far the best I've had outside Mackerel that was swimming just before I ate it from a sushi bar in Aomori. Oh, I almost forgot, the scallops, YUM. OK, what else makes this wonderful? There is more to eat, I assure you. There are so many wonderful things. Let's start with the miso soup. They make their own dashi, I think, because the soup here has a wonderful flavor not available with simple katsuobushi and combu. I love it on a cold day. For apps, we think the takoyaki is the best anywhere in Portland. The tempura is excellent, almost as good as Miki's (Miki makes her own batter from scratch and has so many tweaks to get it just right, hers is almost as good as we got from a tempura chef in Haneda where the chef would fry things and then give them to you at the bar, Amakase style). We've loved so many other things, but these stand out. But, let's not stop there. Sake. Try the flight sometime. If they have it, make sure to try Yuki no Bosha and Ippin. If you love a daiginjo that has a fruity and floral notes, these top notch sakes are for you. And how's the service? Spot on, even when they are busy. Always prompt and attentive, friendly and the kind of people who remember you time after time. And, there are at least TWO super special Pro Tips for you this time! Pro Tip #1: Go there at opening, at 4pm, on Friday through Sunday. This is when Neo tends sushi bar. If you like nigiri or sashimi like I do or a great Chirashi, knife skills matter. Neo is awesome. He's also so generous. Sit at the bar and get to know him, he's kind, generous, and friendly. Pro Tip #2: Of course, the renown relationship with Roscoe's next door. Order from a great taplist. I find that lagers, especially rice lagers and pilsners like Asahi Super Dry complement sushi perfectly but Oregon produces so many wonderful beers that really shift the whole experience toward the unique and special end of quality, so adventure here. I don't recommend a dark or stout beer or even a porter with sushi, but who knows, maybe that's just right for you. A lot of folks like an IPA or even a double IPA. Have fun, it will change the whole character of your meal. read more

What an amazing spot that was very clever in the way they handled the pandemic. The outside seating patio is such a hotspot and I'm not just talking about the cute little fire pits they have in front of you. They have a great sake selection where the manager recommended a nice crisp and sweet easy table sake. It paired well with our Unagi roll, salmon hand roll as well as their speciality roll. I experienced strange service from a server there twice and won't be going back. The first time at the end of our meal, I asked her about dessert, she listed off two things, so I said (in a friendly, making-a-conversation kind of way) "Two things, right?" She responded with "If there were more, I would have told you." Then laughed almost sarcastically. Both my friend and I were taken a back but let it go. Fast forward about a month later, I took my teenaged daughter there because I liked the food, and (pretty sure) I got the same server. We ordered two meat plates, two bowls of rice, a miso soup, a salad and a drink. This is a lot of food for the two of us (we ended up with two boxes of leftovers). When the waitress brought the bill, she said "Okay! So it comes out to ONLY $40!" I thought I heard her wrong but when she left, my daughter said she heard it too and thought that it was strange and sounded passive aggressive. I'm not sure what she meant by "only" but we didn't feel that she meant to be funny. Maybe we didn't order enough? We ordered more than we could eat and were in and out of there in less than an hour. She made us feel like we did something wrong. The hostess that seated us both times were nice but obviously some staff need to be trained better. read more

Our group tried a variety of traditional rolls, including the spicy tuna, the salmon, the unagi, and one of Miyamoto's speciality rolls, the Wassup B! (Hawaiian albacore tuna, cucumber, avocado topped with young Kona yellowtail, wasabi mayo, and wasabi tobiko). The traditional rolls were good, four stars, with the unagi ending up as our favorite, but the Wassup B! was simply terrible, hardly any taste of fish or avocado or rice, a flat-out wasabi bomb even after we did our best to scrape away the splashes of wasabi mayo. Given the price -- twice as much as the traditional rolls -- and the special cuts of tuna and yellowtail, we expected the wasabi to complement the fish, not completely overwhelm it. I ordered the edamame ($3), the monkey brain (stuffed avocado salad), which was $2 off for hh, pork gyoza ($5) and California rolls for $7. I also ordered 2 Sapporo's ($3) to wash it down with. Apparently my eyes were bigger than my stomach because I had quite a but leftover, which I let my guy friends eat. My guy friends are regulars and ordered boat loads of food, which they were able to finish (as well as mine). The restaurant is incredibly clean and looks way nicer on the inside (it's set among a hipster scene neighborhood). The staff was very nice and street parking as easy to find. The wait to be seated was abominable. It took about 30 minutes with nobody ahead of us, partially due to social distancing, but also due to lethargic serving staff. Once we were inside, things took a turn for the better. My wife ordered a glass of cloudy sake, the name of which I cannot remember, but was smooth and strong without being overpowering. We also split a Sake To Me (tastes like a habanero sake margarita), and the Geisha Tea Party (lemon + green tea + sake = amazing!). Some chicken karaage and California rolls for the kids kept them quiet and complacent, while my wife and I started with tsukemono and miso soup (as is tradition) and the Jalapeno Ninjas (which is not...but should be!). We followed up with the Mexican rolls (seriously, who ever thought of putting cilantro and pickled jalapeno on sushi is a genius!), a spicy tuna hand roll, and unagi with cream cheese. All the flavors were sharp, crisp and umami. Absolutely wonderful and crafted by a master. My only complaint is that you're going to be waiting a while to be served by that master! By the time we we're seated, we were virtually the only people in the restaurant, and it still took another hour and change for us to complete our meal, and most of that was wait time. Whether or not that was a fluke remains to be seen on our next visit, because I have to have those Mexican rolls again! read more
