My friend and I got three pastries, two sandwiches, and a loaf of bread. Ordering is a hassle, since the menu is on a screen which is four pages long, advancing every few seconds with detailed descriptions that are too long to read that quickly. There is a self-service kiosk that is disconnected. The seating is pretty strange. 2-seat tables are the same size as the 4-seat tables and the cushions cause the customer to pitch forward. So lots of wasted space and bad choices. Food is picked up from a counter with a low-hanging shelf that prevents eye contact and talking. Our order was delivered as to-go, which was wrong. One of our sandwiches was incorrect. Completely the wrong dish. This place has been under construction for over two years and they have so many defects in layout, logistics and service. I visited Model bakery on Friday morning on March 27. The line was short and the counter person was friendly. I sat down to try the cinnamon raisin and walnut bun. As I took bites I didn't see any raisins and walnuts. I thought perhaps the filling is in the middle of the bun. I took a couple more bites and realized the salesperson gave me the wrong pastry. I returned to the counter to inform them of the error. Instead of an apology, another salesperson reprimanded me for eating a few bites before bringing it to her attention. I had never experienced such poor service at Model Bakery. She said she will allow this one time replacement and angrily threw the eaten pastry in the garbage. I never received an apology for the error. I've visited Model Bakery in Napa (both locations) and Walnut Creek multiple times. This is the first time I've encountered such a poor experience and it's left a such a poor impression. I have no desire to return to the Walnut Creek location. She desperately needs customer service training!!! read more

The bakery is definitely amazing. The English muffins have to be some of the best I have ever had. The blueberry scones are close to perfect... only the bakery in Lafayette beats them on the almond croissant... clearly I have bakery issues, lol. The ambience is great, love the design and the visuals and the staff is unbelievably polite and helpful. The line can be a little long, but they process everything very efficiently. The only reason why I am not providing five stars is the cost. $13.00 for an egg sandwich is excessive, although I must admit it was a damn good sandwich. After looking at some of the pricing, it appears most things are on average about 15 to 20% higher. But I must admit, I'll still be back, we definitely enjoyed our visit. read more

My daughter and her friends were up in Napa this weekend and went in to get some breakfasts items to go. My daughter ordered the Model Wrap without meat and when they got back to the house she took a bite and it was full of ham. Although it was a bit of a hassle she decided to go back to let them know that they made a mistake. When she got there the person who took her order denied that she had said anything to her about meat, that she only requested that the bacon not be added. When my daughter reassured her that she did ask for no meet since she's a vegetarian the server continued to refuse to help her in any way. My daughter asked for the manager and when they got there, the manager too said that the receipt only said no bacon. After much back and forth, nothing got resolved. Apparently at Model, the customer is NOT always right. They refused to make her a new wrap and said that next time she should have just ordered the vegetarian one instead. That is unbelievable. They are very different from one another, meat aside. Anyhow, begrudgingly, my 19 year old daughter paid another of her own hard earned $20 for a second wrap because she was starving at this point. Shame on you. Such horrible customer service. I don't care how good your food is, nothing is worth being treated like shit. read more

We were eagerly awaiting the opening of this new bakery in Walnut Creek, especially since there was a lot of buzz about it. Unfortunately, for me, it didn't live up to my expectations. It's beautifully decorated on the inside and they offer good deals on day old pastries. But the sandwiches, bread and pastries aren't that special (not worth the special price). Coffee always seems to come in a paper cup even when ordering to eat there, and they charge when you ask for Jam on the side (you're given a tablespoon's worth ). Things like that just cheapens the experience of eating there which is a shame because it is quite a pretty place to sit and enjoy a meal. read more

I waited in line for 20 minutes only to be told that they can't sell me a yogurt parfait that my son wanted(which was already prepared and sitting in the fridge right by the checkout) due to their system not showing it as a sellable item. This could have been avoided by simply charging me for the item manually or charging me for a different item like any other restaurant. Don't be swayed by the pictures of long lines. The lines move efficiently. There's usually two cashiers ringing people. Their bathroom is oddly spacious but clean so no complaints. They make a fabulous cappuccino. I had ordered a cappuccino and chocolate croissant. The cappuccino was ready way before the warmed chocolate croissant. There's a real problem in coordinating the drinks with food. I spoke with the manager and he got the croissant. Later, the customer that was sitting at my table said he had the same frustration in getting a cup of coffee. Great drink and food just needs improvement in coordinating the order. I decided to give it a try since they've been in business for a couple of months in Downtown Walnut Creek and had always caught my attention. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed with my visit. Since I was in a rush, I ordered takeout: a chocolate cookie, a ham and brie sandwich, and a cappuccino. The sandwich was cold and hard as a rock. The cookie was overly sweet, so much so that I couldn't even enjoy it with my drink. The cappuccino was a definite "no" for me. I'm not sure if it was the beans, but the flavor just wasn't good. Pastries are very good - get them from the counter, in a bag, and get out of there. But save yourself, don't ask them to be heated up, don't order drinks or prepared food. Once you get deep into the place, it's a giant traffic jam. You have to stand in the exact corridor where the servers come out and people try to get to the bathroom in the other direction. You are a sitting duck in a narrow passageway, waiting for your heated croissant, which they will inevitably forget and 10 min. later, put on a plate instead of a bag or vise versa. Then 10 min. after that, your drinks will come out. The service is confused - we actually left without out order afetr at least a half hour. The stuff we got in a bag at the counter though was very good. Heat them up at home! read more

Just discovered this local bakery and placed my first order today. I ordered four different types of AUTHENTIC organic sourdough breads, and it was all super fresh and delicious! I'll definitely be a return customer, likely many many times over. So happy to have found a local small baker that makes real sourdough bread with only three or four natural ingredients, unlike most of the other garbage from other mostly very large chain bakeries masquerading as small local bakeries, etc. It looks like all or at least almost all of their breads are also made with organic ingredients which is also very important to me and special! I also appreciate that Model Bakery actually lists the ingredients for their products. Many bakeries do not and that's really disturbing. read more

Cool place, friendly staff, great bakery and good coffee. But, I am always amazed how long it takes to get a cup of coffee even when there is only a handfull of customers in the seating area. It took 13 minutes this morning before the pager lit. But this is every time I go in. This is one area the managment team needs to figure out a more streamlined process. Please, instead of defending how great the brewed coffee is, watch the process and see how to improve and shorten the waiting time. It looks like each cup is handled by two or three people before it gets to the counter...The process needs tweaking. Thanks. read more
