Much like the owners' flagship restaurant on the downtown Prescott square, The Copper Note, Modern Agave has an attentive, timely, knowledgeable, friendly, and even choreographed staff. Again, similar to The Copper Note, Modern Agave also possesses a richly appointed and warmly inviting decor; the pièces de résistance are the olive colored velvet booths... inviting the diner to settle in and enjoy a luxurious culinary experience over pleasant conversation. Last weekend our family felt eager for a great dining experience; since the ambiance telegraphs quality, we were unconcerned with the $50 price points on menu. We began our dining adventure with delicious mixed drinks. Our calamari appetizers were cooked perfectly and presented with flair alongside arugula garnishes and slices of dried blood oranges. After a superb introduction, it pains me to say that the entrees fell far short of what the restaurant seems to offer. The ceviche was as one would expect, thankfully, but the chicken tacos were served with flimsy corn tortillas that lacked a true and distinctive Mexican masa flavor-- these were the kinds of tortillas you might expect to buy off the shelf at your local supermarket. The pollo seasonings were indistinct and though a smokey adobo / chipotle mayonnaise or hatch green chile salsa or chopped jalapeño "pickle" could have added layers of flavor, they were absent. The flat iron steak was served with a delicious sweet potato mash and it was the saving grace of the meal as the flat iron steak, though prepared medium-rare as requested, also lacked seasoning -- an overnight marination or even just a tad more of a salt rub would have elevated this dish. Unfortunately, the flat-iron steak was also served with an overly oily chimichurri sauce (it should be more heavily herbaceous and lighter on the oil) and suffered the same tortillas as the chicken taco dish. It was the paella, though, that was most disappointing-- so much so that we actually felt insulted. The dish was more of a soupy rice-bowl than an actual paella; one expects a true paella to be prepared in a paella pan which imbues the dish with its distinctive crispy edges and separated rice grains. It was intolerable at *any* price point. We were relieved that the churros and Crema Catalana cleansed our palate sublimely. The warm churro was appropriately crisp on the outside and warmly-soft on the inside while amply dipped in sugar and Mexican cinnamon. The Crema Catalana held a perfect balance of cinnamon and citrus elements enhanced by its silky texture. Regarding the above critiques, some might find most of them trivial. Had we paid $150 for our total meal, I probably would have let the whole affair go and not mentioned anything here on Yelp and would have just decided to never return. But our family paid well over $300 and for that price point I would expect everything, especially the entree menu items, to be absolutely perfect and delicious in varieties and layers of temperatures, textures, and complimentary flavors. Modern Agave (and The Copper Note for that matter) has the right idea and the right dream, but it lacks full execution. I recommend that Modern Agave invest in a Master Chef to develop their recipes, menus, and to conduct trainings for their chefs and sous chefs. Until that happens, our family will only patronize Modern Agave as a cozy place for drinks, appetizers, and deserts.

The hot, new restaurant in downtown Prescott. It is at street level in the Bashford Court building. Our group enjoyed our meal. We started with the Jicama Salad, which was light and refreshing. For the entree, I had the Salmon, my friend ordered the Flat Iron Steak, and both guys ordered the Seafood Paella. Service was friendly and efficient. The atmosphere there is swanky and upscale. We had a nice time, delicious food, and will return soon.

Such a wonderful experience tonight! Fresh and flavorful, none of the dishes we ordered disappointed. The chicken tortilla soup is fantastic. The jerk chicken, Ropa Vieja and guacamole with pomegranate were excellent. And yes, order the churros!! We already made a reservation to go back. Beautiful interiors. Can't wait for the tapas bar to open!

My wife and I went here for dinner recently. The ambiance is great - bright, not too loud, with comfortable chairs. The service is top notch. The food was flavorful, but also what held me back from 5 stars. We ordered the Veracruz Snapper and Adobo chicken breast, and both were overcooked. The snapper actually required a knife to eat. Most side dishes tasted bland or unseasoned, but when combining them with the sauce on the proteins, they weren't too bad. Highlights included the jalapeño sweet potato mash and the coconut cream flan.

This restaurant seemed upper end as we walked in but the price wasn't reflective of that. It was so nice and the ambiance was perfect and beautiful. It was really good and different for Prescott. We didn't eat a steak or anything like that but the empanada's, tortilla soup and pozole ware the best we've had in a long time from anywhere. The star of the night besides the staff were the empanadas. Texture was perfect and the flavor was delicious. They took time to make sure they serviced us for the wonderful drinks we had. Staff from the seater to the manager addressed us appropriately and as we were family. So nice for Prescott to have an upscale place without a large bill.

Ok, I admit I fell for the hype and the hope of a new, high end local Mexican restaurant. This isn't it - I can't comment on the bar, drinks, or bartenders - I don't participate in the liquor consumption. Food, service, salsas - I'm qualified to comment on. I stopped in for lunch to scout the place out for a possible "date night" location. I had the empanadas - good flavor - the size was 3 small empanadas - 3 stars, still hungry after that so I ordered the jerk chicken tenders, good portion size, but not as spicy as advertised (real mild jerk seasoning) I use Walkers Wood brand imported Jamaican Jerk seasoning paste when doing tri-tips and chicken at home. This was nothing like authentic jerk seasoning. Weak, underwhelming flavor mildly disappointed 2.5 stars. Had an iced tea - really good 3 stars. Overall giving it 3 stars (being generous). $40+ for lunch (without alcohol) and not super impressed. It's not making the "date night" list yet - salsas were also not impressed with. We still need a high end, really good Mexican restaurant here - this may be ok for appetizers or dessert - I will try one solo dinner run before passing final judgement - will post results here. Service was very good, personable, and attentive - obviously a well trained staff 3.5 stars.

    Fish tacos

My husband and I had a WONDERFUL experience at Modern Agave on 7/5. We went for lunch and sat in a corner booth. The ambience was very nice. We enjoyed the fresh chips, salsa, and pomegranate guacamole as a starter. My husband had the fish tacos and I had the Airline chicken, both were expertly prepared. For dessert we shared their version of crème brûlée. This was our Anniversary celebration and we were so pleased with our experience! The service was spot-on, and the food was really delicious.

    Delicious chicken tenders!

We started with the grilled octopus, which was an excellent appetizer. For the entrées, the fish of the day (halibut) was outstanding--perfectly cooked with incredible flavor. The forest seafood soup had an absolutely amazing broth, rich and full of flavor. The chicken entrée was also delicious and thoroughly enjoyed. For drinks, the signature Mariposa cocktail was excellent and memorable. The Skinny Margarita and the Smoky Pear were enjoyable but didn't stand out as much as the food. The non-alcoholic drinks were also a hit. We finished with the cheesecake, which was a delicious ending to the meal. What impressed me most was the depth of flavor while still feeling fresh and health-conscious. The service was excellent--friendly, attentive, and surprisingly fast without making us feel rushed. The only disappointment was not being seated in one of the dining areas with the beautiful view. Since the scenery is one of Mariposa's highlights, I'd recommend requesting a window or patio table when making a reservation. Although it's definitely on the expensive side, I believe it's worth the price because of the exceptional food, outstanding service, and spectacular setting. Would I return? Absolutely. I'd happily order the grilled octopus, the halibut, and the forest seafood soup again.

The bartender at least was very sweet and kept adding to it for me. They had been out of several other drink options unfortunately and this was one of the few non alcoholic options available. The Chilean sea bass dish was flaky on the outside, but it was not fully cooked in the very middle. They did refire it for me at least when I realized. The side was this veggie pea mix, but no starch of any sort. The only thing that allowed it to feel complete was their complimentary bread. That was nice and warm, and had a unique texture, and is very filling. It even came with dips, and I especially liked the olive oil with a sweet type of chili paste. I appreciated they gave me extra bread to finish off my dips. The meal had enough strong points that I thought maybe another night they would step it up after recalibrating from the busy day. Unfortunately the second time I went the food really did not hit the mark at all. The horchata they now had in stock, but it was one of the worst I have had. It just tasted like sweet milk. The ceviche mixto had been recommended to me the first visit, and I wanted something light, so I thought perfect! It was the blandest ceviche. Somehow it had no flavor and some of the fish in there did not taste fresh. The frozen beet decoration was visually interesting, but added nothing to the flavor. I didn't say anything because honestly I was tired, and was like I already had them refire my fish the first time and adjust my drink a bunch...I just was tired and didn't want to become a pain. I at least sat next to a really nice solo diner and had a fun chat. They have indoor and outdoor seating, and they have a small parking lot that doesn't have a fee to park. The restaurant itself has a lot of character, it full of textures and colors, had a cute little fountain outside. It just feels homey and welcoming. The menu...is hella pricey for a tamale. I mean even with inflation these days I could get a tamale at most spots where I live for like half the price. I just told myself it's Sedona just except it lol so I went wild and got their extra special tamale with lots of topping to make it a more complete meal. I chose the chicken mole for my filling. I also got their dairy free horchata. First thing the horchata was delicious! Creamy, great texture, not to sweet, seasoned just right. Extra points for being dairy free as milk is not my bodies friend. The tamale however was a major let down. I was so close to just sending it back, but was on a time crunch and starving. The masa was so salty. The mole sauce was barely existent and had no complexity or flavor really. I didn't taste the chocolate or the Chile . Just blah. The toppings and horchata helped make it possible to consume despite the saltiness. So overpriced salty tamale gets 2 stars, ambiance 5, and horchata 5, which is why this place gets a three stars overall. I wanted to love this spot so bad, and maybe it was a bad day, or the wrong thing to get...but their name is literally tamaliza. Their tamale should have rocked my world.
