Decent pizza. We had the Italian Bomb and it was pretty good. Wives had 1/2 Eggplant and 1/2 Clams Casino and they liked it. There was a long wait during mid-afternoon (3:30PM) on a Sunday. They put a little bar cart outside so it was tolerable. Once seated it was comfortable and not crowded in the booth. If you order 2 large pies like we did it takes up the whole table as the pies go right on the table (no stands). Service was very good even though they were busy and the food didn't take too long to come out. Counterweight IPA on draft so we got a pitcher. All in all, modern does a very good job and I would return. Parking was brutal because the lot was full but we finally found a space on the street. If the bar cart is out it makes the wait a little easier. I would probably order the bomb again. A large will feed 2 good eaters or 3 dainty eaters. So I had to check it out and I'm so glad I did. I went with the famous white clam pizza and added mushrooms to half of it. Honestly, it was phenomenal. The flavor combo was perfect, the crust had that ideal crunch, and the portion (a small with about 8 slices) was just right. I couldn't have asked for a better intro to New Haven pizza. I called in my order for takeout and was told it would be ready in about 20 minutes. When I showed up, it was hot and ready to go. They have clear signs directing you to the back for pickup, which made the whole process smooth and easy for a first timer like myself. I'm from Maryland and was visiting New Haven. My cousin suggested we visit Modern for some pizza. This was the in my top 2 of best bizza I have ever eaten! I'm upset that I won't be able to eat it at least once a week! I can't even describe it's simply GOOD and worth the wait! We got that there right at 3pm when they opened but didn't make the first cut of customers so we waited about 50 miinutes for a table. We got a pepperoni & sausage, and the italian bomb! My buddy and I decided to play hooky from work, take a drive up to New Haven, and sample the supposed best pizza in the game. We arrived at Sally's Apizza at 11:50. We didn't want to wait for a table. Old timey decor -- formica table tops and wood paneling. It seemed like a good place to get pizza and pitchers of beer. We ordered a Meats Apizza, a Mozzarella & Tomato Sauce Pie, and a pitcher of Sally's Apilz. Sally's Apilz is brewed exclusively for Sally's by Two Roads Brewing Company. A perfect beer for pizza. Lighter body and lighter flavor pilsner, but not a watery American light beer. A great accompaniment, but not overpowering. You can't have pizza with something like a black chocolate stout. The pizza is thin crusted and charred. A thin layer of mozzarella, not big heaps. Very high quality pizza. The only drawback was it took about forty minutes to get the pizzas. They have a massive take out and delivery business. I think that's why our superb waitress encouraged us to start with a salad. From there, we figured we would wander over to Frank Peppe's. It's only a block or so away. We waited in line for about twenty minutes. Not too bad. We weren't concerned about that, because we were still digesting Sally's. Frank Peppe's decor is much more modern than Sally's, and it has a much bigger dining room. We ordered a sausage and peppers pie and a pitcher of Sam Adams Cold Snap. Another great beer for pizza. Frank Peppe's was also thin crust, not overwhelmed with mozzarella, but not as charred as Sally's Apizza. Again, great pizza. From there, we figured that Modern Apizza is only a five minute drive, so we might as well go. We had cold feet when we walked in the door. But we made eye contact with the waiter, so we had to go in. We skipped the beer, and ordered a plain pie with a liter of Foxon Park soda. It's a popular local brand with all sorts of old timey flavors. Modern was thicker crust than Sally's and Frank Peppe's, a heavy layer of mozzarella cheese, and no char. It's not New York pizza, but it's closer to NY than Connecticut pizza. It came in third place. My favorite is a toss up between Sally's Apizza and Frank Peppe's, but Sally's might be a teeny bit higher up than Frank Peppe's. To make a fair comparison, I would probably need to go back and get the same exact pies from each place and compare. The great thing about Connecticut pizza is it doesn't have a thin crust, and heaps of cheese. You can order a bunch of different pizzas and try a bunch of different slices. read more

Well really it much I can say that hasn't been said about Modern Pizza. Let's start with the service we were seated immediately around 12 noon with a decent amount of folks already in the restaurant for lunch. Order taken promptly and after a little bit of time out pies came out perfectly. One sausage and onion, 2nd pepperoni and spinach. We truly enjoy the great execution of the amount of garlic mixed with the spinach on our pie. Perfect chew of each slice was enjoyed thoroughly. The onion and sausage combo came together excellently. The crust was nicely charred yet a bit wet. And while the pie was loaded with vegetables, some of them such as the broccoli and spinach were obviously frozen, not fresh. I buy frozen vegetables myself to make at home, but I don't expect them on a pizza that costs $23 (12") while cut into 8 mini slices, the 12" pie is the equivalent of 2 regular sized slices. Make sure you go in to put your name on the wait list because they do not respect the line that forms, which is unfortunate because many of us wasted our time waiting for nothing. My absolute favorite pizza of of all the new haven pizza restaurants. I go several times a month! Since new haven pizza got super popular, the wait times can be long. The larger your party, the longer the wait. As a solo diner, the longest ive waited was 45 mins. It's always worth the wait. Servers are always pleasant, never once had a bad experience. My favorite pizza is the clam with white sauce. A mozzarella pie and a foxon kola never goes wrong. It can be loud, and bad for introverted people but I tune out with a Nintendo switch or something to read. What can be irksome is the parking. If you're not there at opening (which is 10:30 on weekdays and at least 2 hrs before that on weekends), you WILL be circling around the block. The parking lot is tiny, and the street can fill up quick. Short of those complaints, I highly recommend. read more

First time having Apizza as someone who grew up in CT! I was pleasantly surprised. The pizza was delicious! So much flavor in a slice. The crust wasn't as sturdy as it needed to be to handle all the toppings on the first one Italian Bomb (bacon, pepperoni, mushroom). The regular pepperoni held up perfectly. Even my die hard NY pizza loving fiancé liked the pizza . The wait wasn't too long. Average for any popular restaurant (20mins). Parking was tough with the small lot but we got lucky still. Plenty of street parking if you're willing to talk a block or two depending on how much traffic there is. The inside is a lot bigger than the outside makes it appear. Lots of history on the walls. There was so much cheese you couldn't taste the sauce. It also prevented the crust from cooking all the way through. It was floppy and greasy in the worst way. When in New Haven, had to try their famous apizza! A friend recommended this local pizza restaurant versus going to Pepe or Sally's and it was a good choice since there's no wait and ample seating. We got the clams pizza and meat lovers pizza (both small) to share and it was definitely more than enough for two.
