2/5: Pastrami sandwich + provolone: Meat wasn't dry or all fatty. But I wish there was more complexity with the flavors and texture. It was all salt and not much else. Owner was awesome. My kids prepared a surprise party at their patio for my wife's birthday 2 weekends ago but unfortunately, it rained. She was very accommodating to moved the party indoors. She mingled with guests, checking occasionally if everybody's needs are met. We will definitely be back for lunch or dinner. Love this great little deli. The large sub is huge (16"). No way any one person can put one of these down. The Italian is my favorite. They have a really good meatball, but it's not my top favorite in the area. They have some nice outdoor seating, but I typically get takeaway. There is short term meter parking out front so it is easy to grab and go. The staff is great. I will always go back to this spot when in the area. My office ordered delivery from Modica's for lunch today. I ended up getting the Linden on wheat, which is basically a sandwich with goat cheese, sundried tomatoes, lettuce, and pesto. It was pretty good. Not one of the best sandwiches I've ever had, but not bad. At least it was better than the Jimmy John sandwiches we ordered last time. One thing- my sandwich was $9 and if I had actually paid for it I might have complained how the sandwich wasn't as good in comparison to a few high quality sandwich joints I like to go to in downtown LA for around the same price (i.e. Earl of Sandwiches, Jist cafe, etc.). Modica's Deli is a cute little spot on Ocean Blvd. in downtown Long Beach. Our friends recommended the place to us. Parking is on the street which can be a problem and a down on Linden or a pay lot. We were exploring the area behind Modica's where there are really cute places and decided to have an early dinner. We tried the spaghetti with meat sauce at $8.75 and meat lasagna for$9.99 which are pretty good prices. The pasta entree come with a green salad and garlic bread. The green salad was good-your basic lettuce and shredded carrots with a few radishes. It had the vinegar and oil and Romano cheese which was really good and refreshing. The garlic bread was good too. Crispy with a nice garlic butter flavor. That's the good part... The pasta looked great. But the sauce had a sweet sauce like they added too much sugar. Ugh. I know there are some who like a sweet marinara but it was too much for our tastes. It almost made the entrees inedible. The lasagna had a good meat and cheese but it was hard to get that without the sauce. Maybe, like most places, you have to find the things you like so it could just be we need to try something that's not pasta but that's a sandwich and I wouldn't go there just to have a sandwich. There are so many other places to try in downtown Long Beach that we would try first. read more

Modica's Deli is a family-style "pig in" type of restaurant. They serve large portions (seriously really big), and each plate amazes me after the next in terms of flavor and height. The ambiance of Modica's is very very casual. I did notice that a lot of people come here on their lunch break from work; it doesn't get too noisy (even on the weekends), but it drowns out any awkward silences. THE FOOD- I ordered their Spaghetti with mushroom marinara sauce ($8.75), and a Greek salad ($6). I wasn't too impressed by the salad, even knowing how healthy and organic it was advertised as, but the huge portion of spaghetti I received made up for it since the taste of their marinara sauce was like nothing I've had before, absolutely delicious. My mom; as indecisive as she sometimes is, couldn't decide between the French onion, and an Italian sub, so I chose the Meatball sub ($11.50) for her. French Dip - The beef was also solid. It was tender and delicious with generous portions. The au jus was thicker with a great depth of flavor. This place is always packed so I decided to try it out especially after reading the reviews. They added additional seating to the outdoor dining area which is nice. You order inside then take a seat and they'll bring you your food. I just had the lemonade and marinara with meat sauce. It was very good. Nice portion so I took some to go. Growing up in NYC I feel I have a great experience in Italian food. When I saw this place I was so excited ! I ordered the chicken parm wedge. Ok so it looked great, the cutlet I was disappointed. Not sure if it was baked ? Or sitting in marinara all night? The cutlet was thick like a tender. It should be thin, and fried crispy. I am not saying it was bad but it it was needing some seasoning. I can only speak for the dinner special and pastrami sandwich. Incredibly great value at the dinner special which includes Italian pasta, salad, garlic bread, and a fountain drink.
