I love coming to Modicas due to the great food and walking distance, I've never had an uncomfortable experience until yesterday evening. The younger white girl at the counter wasn't friendly at all and was even using a condescending tone at times. I still tipped her, sat down patiently to wait for my order, and I ended up hearing her make a joke about my cough and laughing with another employee before just plopping my sandwich on the table. I said thank you politely, she did not respond at all and walked away. I hope she heals from whatever she's going through for real. There was a bit of a line when I got there, but not too bad yet. I got a sandwich to go--their 8" Italian sub with provolone, which came in at just under $10. The sandwich came out really fast; I was on my way in like 5 mins. The ingredients tasted really fresh and I liked the use of romaine lettuce pieces, not shredded iceberg. With reference, I made a stop at Modica's and was more than pleased. Covid restrictions obviously give no benefit to the atmosphere, however it was clean, inviting, staff was friendly and efficient. My sandwich was well... fantastic. Perfect bread, enough pickles, pastrami cooked to the perfect crisp -- I actually owe Modica's two French's to go mustard packets I took expecting to need to add it on the sandwich **they're still sitting in the cup holder of my car. The food was great. Very filling and beautifully served. I do go to eat out alone, I do it quite often, most places never seem to mind but for some reason one of the employees seemed to have me in a rush. Walking up it was pretty empty, I walked up to an employee that seemed to take a bit to realize I was standing there. I stated that I wanted a table for one and asked to get a corner table, so I can be out of the way if groups and couples, he looked at me and said "just for one?" and gave me a side eye. Once seated he gave me a menu and walked off really fast. He came back and put a water on my table and asked if I was ready to order. I told him it was my first time here and if he had something to recommend, he walked off with out a word but a younger waiter came to assist me, asking for recommendations he took my order and i ordered a beer. The beer i tried on a whim and was not a fan of it so I jist stuck with my water. The rusher came iver and asked what was wrong with my beer i just said it wasnt what i expected but that was fine, interrupting me he said I would be charged for the beer since i ordered it and drank some i told him that was fine and I never planned not to. The entire rest of the night was looking to be enjoyable but this first employee seemed to be lingering around and I just felt that I was constantly being watched. I have been coming here for 17 years. Today will be my last day coming to this establishment. Please train Phil better customer service skills. I walked in to order and he walked in right behind me. When he finally came to the counter. Instead of helping me he assisted someone else who came in way after me. When I let him know what he did. He did not care or apologize. Great location in the cooper arms building. Nicely decorated, freindly staff, and the outdoor seating was very nice. I hsd the Italian Sub and was a bit underwhelmed. The bread was just ok. Not good or bad. I'll assume it's not made there. The meats were decent, but nothing to write home about. The ham was the star of this sub, which is sad because a decent salami should never be second to ham in my opinion. The mortadella was a mortadella. It has it's place, but basically its just fancy bologna. Yes I know...mortadella is from Bologna Italy. So yeah. Cool. The tomatoes, and lettuce were fresh though. They did hsve a good selection of drinks. Stubborn soda, which I like but also hate because no one seems to be able to get the co2 mixture correct, so it alwsys takes time to pour because it's overly fizzy. Still yummy though. This food joint is a disappointment! I expected a lot from this place since it has a 4 star in yelp. My girlfriend and I went here for a late lunch since we want to try something new. Don't get me wrong, I like the ambiance and it has a downtown LB city vibe into it. One server is really friendly and he talks about random Greek traditions, which is awesome. The food is not so much though :( Maybe we just didn't order the right dish, but here comes our rant... I ordered their bowtie marinara sausage pasta which literally taste like Chef Boyardee canned food. They served it with garlic bread and it taste like butter bread; I cannot taste any garlic into it. They serve it with a side of salad, too. The salad is pretty good and I have no issue on that. It is actually the best part of our meal.. Is the salad! My girlfriend ordered their pasta dish, too. She didn't feel good eating it after. Overall, it's a bust! I would give it a shot next time, but I will order strictly the sandwiches. PS: I gave 1 star for the Greek server and 1 for the ambiance.. Love this great little deli. The large sub is huge (16"). No way any one person can put one of these down. The Italian is my favorite. They have a really good meatball, but it's not my top favorite in the area. They have some nice outdoor seating, but I typically get takeaway. There is short term meter parking out front so it is easy to grab and go. The staff is great. I will always go back to this spot when in the area.
