Maybe I'm…read moremissing something, but I genuinely don't understand the hype surrounding Philly cheesesteaks after this experience. The bread? Absolutely the star of the show--fresh, soft, and delicious. Unfortunately, that's where the excitement ended for me. The steak itself was surprisingly bland and severely underseasoned, lacking the flavor and punch I was expecting. After just two bites, I was completely done. I came in expecting an iconic food experience and left disappointed. If this is considered one of the best, then Philly cheesesteaks might just not be for me. For my taste buds, this one was a definite bust.

Easy...repeat EASY 5-start sandwich…read more In from out of town and based on research, a first-hand interview (shout out Uber driver) and proximity to my hotel, I landed on Shay's. Very glad I did. I had the The Classic ($19.95: Prime Rib, Cooper Sharp Cheese, Buttery Steakhouse Seasoning, Sautéed Onions). Great seeded roll, perfectly melted cheese, and grilled onions. Service was great. Went to the shop off-hours / around 2:30 on a Friday. Probably 10 people there, so my steak was served up quickly- maybe 5 minutes max from order to handoff. The staff was helpful and patient walking through a rookie on what to order. The shop is un-assuming. Not tons of signage, not a lot of quirky decor on the walls. I visited on one of the first very hot days of the spring. I decided to get the sandwich to go and devoured it at my hotel. Best Cheesesteak is a hot topic in this town. No real point in trying to say one's the best but some food for thought from an out-of-towner: 1) Research. Ask around. Listen to the passion with which they offer their recco. 2) Highly consider Shay's. I really enjoyed the Cheesesteak and the entire experience.

This sammy is drippy, hot and packed with flavor. Pair it with a big bag of Utz chips and a soda, but preferably a beer which they don't sell. This meal holds up against the other spots that claim top billing in Philly. The owner is opening two more locations in Vegas. That's a good gamble to succeed.

Good call. I wanted to compare both establishments at the x-shaped intersection of 9th & Passyunk. I ordered a Philly with Swiss and mushrooms - it was really really good. Due to the cool morning and other factors we left before finishing the sandwich... after a quick day of sightseeing we were visiting family for dinner and I popped the Pat's into the oven for 10 minutes and it was GREAT for dinner... we cut it into pieces and shared - fantastic!! Both are really good, and I will nod my cap to Pat's, who is also the original location. Pat's is open 24x7 and has picnic tables on the sidewalk (none inside); there is no onsite restroom. Good food; Thanks, Pat's! ----- ----- -----

The Philly locals were right...STAY AWAY!!…read more I've been to Pat's over 20 years ago for a quick trip into Philly from NYC. My family and I thought it was good and was our intro to a cheeses steak in Philly. Fast forward to 2026 I was now visiting in from Los Angeles. I did a ton of research prior to my visit and almost everyone on social media said to avoid Pat's. Well, just for the nostalgia and respect to the originator, I took my wife and unfortunately Pat's was not good at all. Maybe if we were very hungry, stoned or drunk it would justify a visit, but even then I'm not sure it would satisfy. We ordered what they recommended, a cheese steak with onions and wiz. Compared to what we had earlier that day, which was Uncle Gus' at Reading Terminal Market, this sandwich paled in comparison. There's no need to ever come back here. There are WAY better cheese steaks all over Philly.
