I went to Sushi 35 West with a friend, and it was good. It is on top of a smoke shop, and there is little seating, but we waited for a table to clear. It is a little hard to order because there was a bunch of door dashers trying to get their bags, so we waited until things cleared up a bit and one of the cashiers helped take our order. Can confidently say this place lives up to the hype. As others have noted, you'll need to enter and walk up a sketchy looking staircase to get to this spot. I walked up and asked for a menu since I didn't see one posted anywhere, and went with their chef's choice sushi for $37. In retrospect I wish I had sprung for the higher tier one with more pieces, because this was so damn good (and that higher tier option includes toro, my favorite). I waited about 15 minutes or so for my order, and what came out looked like a work of art. Every piece of sushi was melt in your mouth delicious and fresh. The sushi was fresh, but I likely won't return because it wasn't anything special. They offer different sets and donburis for lunch and dinner along with a la carte pieces. Sets typically range from $20-$30. Portions were very small and didn't seem worthwhile for the price. I tried the toro uni donburi and sushi set which both come with a salad. The wasabi sprinkled all over the donburi was a bit overpowering. Why all this madness for sushi from a window after a walkup in an industrial type building over a smoke shop you might ask...? Here you can have Michelin star quality level at a rate half or less than half you would have to pay at this elevated level and grade of sushi. Here you can "splurge" on quality sushi and eat enough of it so that you don't feel the need for a cheeseburger afterwards. At Sushi 35 West, you have the freshest components, from Masa Sushi trained chefs expert at creating the finest sushi, nigiri, and sashimi for your delight and pleasure. At Sushi 35 West, they even give you elevated soy sauce and wasabi that may be ground in house; though, the latter I cannot confirm. They even give you plenty of pickled ginger, whereas one is typically shorted this condiment at nearly all other places. They get the details right here. My general rec is to go with the higher grade items on the menu. The Omakase Chefs Choice platter of 35 pieces of varying nigiri is great for entertaining at home. The fifteen piece box of nigiri is sufficient for yourself and another person to experience the varying grades of chutoro and otoro tuna, while sampling salmon, the most tender hotate scallops in season, and ultra savory and satisfying sawara mackerel. Oh my... You like Dragon Rolls, the FutoMaki roll is your jam at only $18, very satisfying as advertised, with the eel, cucumber and avocado you crave. Don't be afraid to step up to the $21 Toro Toro Roll and let that otoro tuna talk to you in big maki roll form. It's a requirement in my book. You can splurge for the $38 SutoMaki otoro wrapped in nori seaweed with each piece topped with creamy briny sea urchin, but that's only an occasional splurge for me, but excellent. I have had only a little of their sashimi and it shines in the freshness. They do everything at such a high level here and the simplicity of sashimi lets you know how fresh and high quality their fish is without the rice. If you come here prepared to lay out over a Benjamin, you will have quite the experience feasting at home. You will likely be able to keep your total under two Benjamins and feed three or four people and not leave them starving for a cheeseburger. Your guests will praise you for the selections. They consistently get 4.5 stars from me, even when I don't write the reviews, and, if you follow my reviews, you know I don't hand out stars and I don't grade on a curve. For dinner before show, we tried two other viral places. The first was this hard to find sushi spot. It is on the second floor upstairs from the Smoke Shop. Thank you Yelpers who posted pictures of the Smoke Shop because Waze took me to a completely different spot. The stairway and their space is very sketchy (look at pic) but I think that is part of their shtick; high quality sushi in a sketchy location. We ordered ahead on the app and even though I knew it would be sketchy, it was still something to walk up those dingy stairs with a garbage bag sitting at top, turn corner into a barebones stairwell, and pick up order at a McDonald's looking takeout window. But so worth it!! We got the Sushi Premium box and the Toro Toro Roll (what can we say, we love Toro (see Nami Nori review). Cannot really compare toros with NN though because NN torched theirs and also had caviar. But S35 was still very good! Toro in both the negi roll and box were so fatty and yummy! Sushi Above a Smoke Shop: Better than you think I'm always one to vouch for cheap meals and good portions. Food is one of those things that should be accessible and delicious. Quality to price to quantity ratio is paramount for me. Disclaimer: This is not one of those places. But I think Sushi 35 West surprised me enough to warrant a higher rating. It had been a long, depressing day at work; my mood was in the dumps and I had some time before dance practice, so I wanted to get something to feed myself. Popping out of the 34th st. ACE station, I had intended to go to Dainobu between 6th and 7th for a rice ball, but saw Sushi 35 West, a long time resident on my to-try list and figured it was as good of a time as any. I looked at the menu and balked at the prices. $37 for a 15 pc sashimi takeout was not something I would normally do. But I convinced myself I wanted to treat myself to something nice, and if it was bad, no matter, I just wouldn't return. So I got the sashimi set and their spicy scallop roll, $37 and $13 respectively. Pulling them out of the bag once I had arrived at my destination, I was a little disappointed by how small it looked. But I stomached my feelings and decided to immerse myself in the food. When I say I am normally a philistine, I mean it. I don't find much enjoyment in spending absurd amounts of money for food that has a small quality increase over something I could get for half the price somewhere else. Food is fuel. But this sashimi exceeded my expectations. The fish was fresh and had a texture unlike any other I've had before. It had a wonderful bite and mouth feel. And there was no fishy smell or mushiness. The scallop rolls were also good. I couldn't tell the difference in quality like I could with the sashimi, but it was very delicious, and the scallops had a good texture and flavor that shone even through the slightly spicy sauce they were paired with. I will say, the only negative thing about my experience was waiting for the food. The restaurant is mainly takeout, with a couple of cheap looking metal chairs and tables lined out in the seating area; a warehouse-esque grungy place with exposed piping and unfurnished walls and floor. But I didn't mind that. What I did mind was a vague black/brown bug landing on my neck as I sat waiting for my food, and having to swat it off. But that comes with the experience I suppose. All in all, a great sushi restaurant. The fish is perhaps the best I've had at any so far, and it's beaten out the one omakase place I've had the pleasure of attending at the time of this writing (Not going to name names *cough* SHINN WEST *cough*).
