Moving from the mecca of Korean food (aka LA, CA) to Austin, TX made me worry whether I would have to give up Korean food (or any Asian for that matter). Cooking Korean food is not an option because for whatever reason, I find Korean cooking to be very challenging (yet I can cook most other ethnic dishes). So I always leave Korean cooking to the "experts". I even considered having Korean food FedEx'd to me from LA but luckily, through fellow Yelpers, I found Mom's Taste. Yes, it's a great place to pick up banchan, as well as soups & pre-marinated beef and spicy pork. The flavors are spot-on and are geared towards Korean tastebuds because their spicy dishes are really spicy (such as dok-bok-gee & yuk-gae-jang). The prices aren't too bad either - ranging from $3-$10 depending on the size and what you buy (most fall in the $5 range). I usually pick up several dishes for the entire week - just make rice and it's easy Korean meal at home. Usually 3-4 different packages/types get me through the week. And on a budget, this is great since it's about $3-4 per meal. They also carry Korean cup-ramen, rice, as well as some sauces. I didn't check the price but I'd imagine they would be bit more expensive than the market just down the street. Thank goodness for this place because I would've seriously considered having Korean food FedEx'd from LA. read more

Mom's Taste catered a party for 30 over the weekend and everything was very good. We had bulgogi, jap chae, and bi bim bap vegetables with gochu jang (we did the eggs and rice ourselves). The food was ready on time and was packaged well. Everything tasted fresh and our "Western" guests really liked the bulgogi. My husband (he's Korean) thought the bi bim bap was perhaps too "authentic" for western tastes, so we had more of that left over than the other dishes. I really liked the big mushroom pieces in the jap chae, mmm, I am a huge mushroom fan so I really appreciate it when places are generous with the mushrooms!! I didn't know if they catered or not, so I just called them up and asked them. So glad everything worked out. I would use them again. read more

Mom's Taste has such a great banchan selection, as well as great prices for bulgogi & dweji bulgogi. I prefer buying meat from here to easily cook at home rather than going out to a Korean restaurant and being over-charged for a meal! The only downside is that they don't always have certain things I want in stock. But the service is amazing & it's a great place to get a really easy, affordable meal to prepare at home. Generally, I'll grab fishcake, kimchi, bean sprouts, and some dweji bulgogi. It makes a great Korean dinner at home! read more

This is a tiny place that has a few grocery items like rice and soy sauce and a long line of fridges again one wall. That's where the getting is good. They make everything right there and store it those fridges so they're either ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook. You can get a nice bulgogi dinner kit with all the ingredients or you can grab a kim-bab as a snack, etc. I like the tofu jorim especially, but also the homemade gyoza, the pickled radish, and sometimes the pickled cucumbers. Friendly place. Takes credit cards. Best call if you're hankering for something as they sometimes sell out fast. read more

Want to trick people into thinking you cooked an authentically delicious Korean meal, with all the trimmings, but requiring only dropping by a store to do so? Then Mom's Taste is for you. The nondescript storefront with the tiny "Mom's Taste" only hints at what you'll find inside. It's unassuming and plain but the coolers within hold a vast bounty of specialty take-n-bake style Korean foods. Or Heat-n-Eat... or... whatever your choice of words there. In addition to finding precisely what I was after - beef bulgogi - I also acquired some delicious pork bulgogi, seaweed salad, fish cakes, kimchi, and a few other assorted items I wasn't sure of because the writing was in Korean. I also wasn't sure how everything would taste, taken as it was from a cooler. But it was clear the folks who own the place take freshness seriously - everything tasted as though it had just been prepared. Cooking up the pre-marinated bulgogi meat was a snap, and with the addition of rice, we had a massive Korean feast. The price is right for the large portions. Next time I go back I'm going to bring my Korean mother-in-law so I don't miss out on something that might be even more delicious. read more

I come to this place because I can get banchan that I can't make at home like their spicy seasoned crab. But I'm not a fan of their kimchi or some of their other banchans. It's mostly a quality issue for me. I feel like Korean banchans are so fickle when the quality isn't up to par. For example using salted shrimp over fish sauce makes the world of differences. Using fish sauce or shrimp sauce makes the kimchi almost rank tasting after a day or so. I'm glad I can find seasoned crab here but nothing else I've had really says WOW this tastes like home. read more

This place is pretty solid! Great Korean food pre-made! Good soups and very affordable! If you like Korean food check this place out/ its all pre-made and packaged. I just moved to Austin and I usually eat Korean food at home. In the few weeks I've been here I've hit all the asian markets I could find and I think I've finally struck gold. The Kimchee from Han Yang was straight up junk so I headed to Mom's Taste as soon as I heard about it. If you are finding yourself in a kimchee rut this is the place to go! The other reviews cover everything else they have (which I bought too) but it's all about the kimchee for me. No MSG!!!! Cruised in on a bachelor night. The table in the middle was disappointingly empty. It's OK I rolled in 40 min before they close. Got two bags of dumplings. One leek and one kimchi, some beef bulgogi, and a tub of pumpkin soup. I've steamed the dumplings and tasted a bit of either of the other two items and I'm seriously impressed. The price is right and this place is a few blocks from my house. I'm scared what the future may hold for my dinner time eating habits. This place combines the ability to have delish korean eats, be pretty danged lazy (come on how hard is it to sear some beef or steam some dumplings?), and do it all on the cheap! read more

This place was originally miscategorized as a restaurant, but it's more of an Asian grocery, with a bit of a twist: the main focus is pre-prepared Korean side dishes (aka banchan) packed to go. They offer a huge variety of these dishes (a bigger variety than you'd find at the big Asian groceries nearby) at reasonable prices, and they're fresh, authentic, and delicous. We tried the regular white cabbage kimchi, cucumber kimchi, spinach, bean sprouts, sweet black beans, and one of the tangy radish dishes. I lived in Korea for a few years as an English teacher and love the food. There are some decent Korean food options in town, but without exception the restaurants are stingy with the side dishes, whereas in Korea they'd be refreshed regularly throughout the meal. It's pretty easy to cook a lot of Korean meat entrees and soups for yourself, but in our experience the sides are very time-consuming and hard to get right. This place makes it easy to do a fantastic Korean feast at home. They also have a small selection of staple Asian grocery store items and sushi plates wrapped up to go. The only reason I didn't rate this place five stars was because I've tried a limited selection of the food, and haven't done any price comparisons on the grocery items. read more

If you don't read Korean, be sure to have the address with you. The main signs were in Korean, we barely saw the words 'mom's taste'. To further clarify, this place sells cooked food, but it's not a restaurant as there's no tables and chairs for you to sit down and eat. The food are pre-cooked and kept in plastic containers for you to choose and buy. All the plastic containers have a label in English that tells you the name of the dish and ingredients used in the dish. We got there around 7.30pm and I think most of the food were sold out. They close at 8pm. Only saw one last pack of jabchae left on the table. But there were still a lot of side dishes in the refrigerator. We picked up several banchan from the refrigerator sections. My 4yo and 1yo love those ikan bilis (tiny silver fish)! I wish they could have a menu of list of dishes put up somewhere in English to help non-Korean speaking folks like me. I read about the bulgogi and bibibam here but didn't see any at the store and was too shy to ask. Maybe I will try to go earlier next time to try the ginseng chicken. read more

First of, understand that this is NOT a sit down restaurant. It it a cook-at-home store. It can be a little daunting if you're not immediately familiar with Korean cuisine, but the employees are gracious and will walk you through the process(without treating you like you've never eaten food before). There aren't a ton of choices, but what they do have is absolutely fantastic. One problem I always have when making bul go gi at home is I never get the sauce quite right. This place takes all of the guesswork out of it, and you are left with nothing but a perfect meal and very minimal clean up. Kim chI choices abound, which is fair considering half the fun of authentic Korean food is the myriad of side dishes. So puzzled by all the reviews here - is this an inside job or inside joke? As a Korean American, I've been to many Korean groceries and eaten an abundant amount of Korean food. I stopped in again to this place to see if I've missed anything and I hadn't - it's a sparse Korean grocery that sells some bulk Korean food items, but honestly has a lot of empty/wasted space. I don't know much about Korean food, but a friend of mine wanted to try Kimchi. We stopped in here and grabbed some though since we were very obviously not Korean and didn't know anything about the food another customer told us kimchi is an 'aquired taste'. We asked the owners a few questions and they gave someone recommendations. So we grabbed some pork bulgogi as well...I am glad for that. Just discovered this place last week and I intend to make many returns. Despite many trips to various Korean restaurants, I usually stick to ordering either bul gogi or bi bim bap so I have a lot to learn. But Mom's Taste makes it easy - all the food is labeled with ingredients listed, and packaged in clear plastic trays so it's easily visible in the large refrigerators. read more

I grew up eating the Korean food my mom made and I myself am not that handy when it comes to fixing it. There always seem to be something off when I fix it myself. I was told that there was this place off Airport that had already prepared Korean dishes to buy. I went there and the store in an older strip mall. I was pleased to see that the dishes were labeled in English as well as Korean. I made my purchase and took it home to make for dinner tonight. I couldn't believe my taste buds. The food was as good as my mother's! And all for a very reasonable price. The customer service is a little hit or miss but that is due more to my language barrier. I was feeling adventurous so I headed in with an open mind. I don't know anything about Korean food. I got some Mackerel (I like strong tasting fish) in some funky sauce with other stuff in it from the refrigerator. Went home and nuked it and I was one happy camper. The fish is bone in so you have to be careful. Aside from the fish I had no idea what I was eating but it was delicious. I will be back. read more

I found Mom's Taste when I was researching on Yelp for a Korean restaurant in Austin (I'm new to the area). And while Mom's Taste is a takeaway-and-cook shop, it is so simple to cook and so delish that it beats most restaurants hands down (even with the cooking and clean up). It's that good. Like, so good that even though it's 20+ min north of me, I've been there 2 times in 3 days and have eaten nothing but Korean food for the past 72 hours. It's so good that I still, STILL have not been to a Korean restaurant in Austin yet (unless you count the Korean taco food trucks). It's so good that I always get the large containers or daeji bulgogi and beef bulgogi, hoping to have leftovers for bibimbap - and my boyfriend eats the leftovers before I get a chance. The daeji bulgogi (spicy pork) is amazing. The beef bulgogi is amazing. The kimchi and the rest of the ban chan is amazing. And today, I went before noon and found out that they also have kimbap and spicy tofu. I'm still hoping I'll find jap chae there one day, b/c it would probably be the best jap chae ever. I've not tried the rice drink, but I'm tempted. I've yet to grab a bag of mandu (dumplings), but I will next time I'm up there. Srsly, this is a great little store with great prepped foods and a couple of random extras (I'm pretty sure the golf club bag in the front of the store is for sale) - between this place and Han Yang, I'm pretty well set. Mom's Taste is a great place to pick up some Korean food. I know plenty of people have already reviewed saying which foods are great, and honestly, I haven't had anything I didn't like so far, and the employees are helpful too. I only want to caution anyone who goes in to check the dates on the food you buy. Most of the stuff they make seems to last a long time, but only if you buy it early enough. Also, if you like your kimchi sour, be sure to see when it was made; it will not be properly fermented if it was only made a couple of days ago. read more

A wonderful find, out of the way , but worth the search! Right next to Master Gohring 's Tai Chi and Kung Fu Studio. The hangul (korean alphabet) sign on the street hints at wonderful things inside. The hangul for "banchan" or side dishes let you know that a full course Korean meal at home can be yours for less than most restaurant meals. There are no tables, this is strictly to go packaged for home use. There are industrial sizes of Korean brands of corn syrup, soy sauce, mirin and rice. If you need a gallon of kimchi or just enough for tonight's ramen for one, it's all there for you. When we visited, they were making kimchi mandu (dumplings) in the kitchen. Heaven! Cook your rice, add four or five banchan and some kimchi and prepare for a wonderful dining experience. They also make wonderful kimbap. We ate ours right in the parking lot. read more
