Monica's has a nice ambience, which is sadly a rarity these days in downtown Antioch. For this reason alone, I would recommend that locals support it. I have eaten at Monica's three times, and I had good service each time. There is usually a wait, especially on the weekends, so be prepared for that. The food is generally tasty, with items that are not exactly typical; example, the "Big Ass Waffle" and Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. Lots of breakfast items, including steak & eggs. They offer burgers, salmon, crab, etc. The chile relleno is delicious, accepting to my wife. We did think that the ice tea was a little odd in flavor. Not sure why. In addition to drip coffee, they have espresso available, which I appreciate. The prices aren't super cheap, but the food is good and the portions are generous. read more

We decided to give Monica's another try today because while we didn't like the atmosphere from our previous visits, the food and portion size was excellent. It was Father's Day, so we expected the 1 1/4 hour wait. What we didn't expect was the over an hour wait to get our food after our order was taken. Also, the chicken in the chicken parm sandwich was burned and dry and the steak sandwich was not great either. It also seemed like the portions on the breakfasts were smaller than we remembered but it was still $24-28 per omelet meal. While our server was nice and he really was doing his best, the experience was disappointing for sure. After being there 3+ hours today, we won't be trying them again for a long while. read more

The ambiance was ok but the food was horrible. I ordered the Big A Taco Salad Medium Well Steak. The receipt even reflects Medium Well. The same as I ordered when I visited the Monica's in Livermore. When I say the food was like Night and day, that's an understatement. The presentation was trash and the Steak was tough, fatty and overcooked. The pico was watery it was overall a waste of $32.95 plus tax. My friend ordered a Benedict, instead of a poached egg the eggs were hard boiled. The yolks were solid and tough as heck. She complained about her order and they comped it but I kept quiet but in utterly disgust with the food I received. Since we were celebrating her 50th Birthday, I didn't want to cause a problem. We've been to Monica's several times and have, historically, had decent service and enjoyed our meals. Today, however, I was disheartened to see the service at a level of ... incompetence. We showed up today, on a Sunday, without a reservation, and anticipated having to wait for a table. We stood in a short line to add our name to the waitlist. The party before us, a party of three, was given an estimated wait time of 25-30 minutes. Our turn was next (party of 2), and the hostess gave us an estimated wait time of 30-45 minutes. We were willing to wait, and stood in the main entryway for our table to be ready. The party after us, a family of four, was told one hour. The party after them, a younger couple with a child, was told an hour and a half. Of the four parties that were helped in a matter of 2-3 minutes, each was given wait times of drastic variance. Over the next 25 minutes, we were the only two to be waiting for a table. Several other parties walked in and were told a wait time of an hour and a half. None of them wanted to wait that long and left. We also stared at the employees walk past this napkin for those same 25 minutes.. The hostess walked off and another employee came to man the podium up front. At about our 25-minute mark, a server approached the podium as asked why we were standing in the front area, and the now-host told her that he did not know why we were waiting. (Mind you, there were plenty of available tables to be seated at while they stared at us, but we did not know whether or not they were reserved) The server approached us and we told her that we were waiting for a table. The server then walked the restaurant floor, looked at the table availability, and went back to the host and asked him in Spanish, "What about the tables on the side? A all the tables in the middle?" The host shrugged his shoulders, as if he had no idea what was going on. The server the then told the host, in Spanish, "They're the only two waiting," and grabbed two menus and asked us kindly to follow her to a table. We sat down and were promptly served. I ordered a burger and my wife ordered some eggs Benedict with whole/country potatoes as a side. After having been seated, our server took some serious initiative for the next several families that arrived and seated them promptly, too. Before we knew it, the whole restaurant was filled up! When the food came out, her meal came with hash browns. Funny enough, the last time she ordered country potatoes, they brought her hash browns, too. To this day... we still don't know how good these things must be. Or maybe they just don't exist? We may never know. Food quality was good! It was prepared promptly and, otherwise, correctly. While we were eating, the original hostess approached our table and asked for my name, presumably to remove me from the wait list. I know that she had originally took my name down correctly because I got a text message with my name on it.... but after a few moments of scrolling on her iPad, she found the name closest to mine and took that name off of the list... so, Kevin, if you're reading this... now you know why! I came here as a kind of "meet in the middle" location to have an early lunch with a friend who was coming from the Bay area. We discussed some of the options in the area but I saw that a few of my Yelp elite friends had reviewed this place and stated that the food was really good. Interestingly, they still were only giving it three and four stars but all we wanted was some good food and good conversation. So we settled on Monica's Riverview. The location is great. You are right on the water and there is plenty of parking. Please keep in mind that I visited on a weekday, but I have read that it gets really crazy here on the evenings and weekends.. Also, the restaurant itself is really cute so I was optimistic. When we entered we realized the bar was closed and requested a seat in the restaurant and while we waited we saw signs apologizing that the entire bakery was gone for Mother's Day, but again, this was the middle of the week. The service was fine and I thought the prices were a little high for what I was ordering but because I had heard that the food was so good I was not at all worried about it. I figured it would definitely be worth it. My friend and I enjoyed our conversation but we were really disappointed with both of our meals. The food was lacking both in taste and presentation. We ended up going somewhere else for a drink afterwards and ordering some food at the bar. Overall, our experience was fine. Nothing terrible, just meh. I don't know if their chef was gone along with the bakery staff, and perhaps if the bar was open and we came at a different time, we might have had a different experience. It was busy but we were able to get seated in 20 minutes. I got the chilaquiles which were pretty good, not soggy. My two friends got a chicken panini and chicken & waffles. The panini was super basic and the chicken breast was a little dry. The chicken and waffles were more like Tyson chicken strips with waffles. A total disappointment. My friends and I went to Monica's in Antioch after a hike. This wasn't our first visit, we usually love the ambience, and the food and service are typically very good. Unfortunately, this visit fell short. Our server took our order and delivered the food... and that was it. There were no check-ins, no asking if we needed refills, condiments, or anything else. We never saw him again. I always tip and truly believe in tipping for good service. However, service should be more than simply taking an order and dropping off food. A $66 tip for minimal interaction and no follow-up felt excessive and disappointing, especially compared to the level of service we've experienced here before. It's 4pm on a Wednesday. I'm starting to write this review as we sit waiting for our happy hour starters- onion rings and chips and salsa. It's been about 25-30 minutes since we placed the order. It is not busy, about 4 occupied tables. How on earth does it take more than 20 minutes to get chips and salsa or onion rings. I'm going to pause here and finish when things arrive. The food has arrived. All of it, at once. Starters and mains. Which was weird but whatever. Onion rings: Hot, crispy, overall good. Chips and salsa: the salsa is spicy and robust, the chips are thick and crunchy. I don't know if they make the chips in house but they looked burnt. Chicken salad sandwich: good ratio of chicken salad to bread (sourdough) and the soup of the day (broccoli cheddar was good). But, is it worth $20? It's literally like two ladles of soup and some chicken on bread. Fish and chips: Came out hot, fries are average, the fish was well breaded not too much or too little, but could have been a bit crunchier. Overall it's a fine option, but $32 for what was honestly a very basic fish and chips seems off. I have always been more than happy to pay more for higher quality eating and or service. Monica's seems like it wants to be a nice restaurant with quality food, but falls short. If you are trapped in downtown Antioch and have money to spend, it's a fine option. Terrible experience this past weekend. Took more than 30 minutes for coffee and soft drinks to arrive. We were a party of six and immediately the server told us gratuity would automatically be included in our bill. I suppose this lets the server off the hook. They get a tip regardless of service and attentiveness. I mean, that's terrible. Prices were astronomical, too. I ordered the bacon waffle. It's a waffle with bacon cooked in to it. $23! I was in the area today and I needed breakfast. I found Monica's Riverview and it sounded pretty cool. Considering it was an Antioch I wasn't expecting too much, but I when I walked in I was pleasantly surprised. This place is actually really nice inside and it is actually on the water. The building like I said is on a wharf and it is a perfect location to have a meal on a sunny day. The dining area is nicely decorated it looks pretty modern, they have a full bar and there is outside eating in the shade. I walked in and was greeted by the hostess and immediately sat down. I sat there for about 2 to 3 minutes, and the waiter came over, I gave him my coffee and Chilaquiles's order. It was crazy, but my food showed up before my coffee, they do not play around here. My Chilaquiles were pretty good, but it could've been a little better. It could've came with beans, pico de gallo and maybe a little bit more chorizo. I was left with half a plate of Chilaquiles's and no chorizo halfway through. If they would fix that, the meal would've been perfect. It was listed as a "favorite" so I thought I'd try something that I couldn't get anywhere else. It was described as turkey, cranberry sauce, avocado, cheese, bacon, lettuce, and aioli on a crescent roll. It was not the greatest, very little avocado and aioli, and just a little cranberry sauce that looked and tasted more like jam. It was definitely something I could easily make at home, nothing special. I also found two hairs in my French fries. I didn't say anything though because I was fine just picking them out. My husband ordered a Reuben sandwich, and he said the same thing, very underwhelming. Service was a little slow, but we didn't mind. Our waitresses were very nice! The staff appeared more engaged in chatting with friends than attending to customers. Once seated, the view from our table was excellent. We ordered a variety of dishes: a burger, a crab sandwich, and my husband's chilaquiles, which turned out to be the standout dish. However, after about 30 minutes, our server returned only to inform us that they were out of French fries. Our only alternatives were a side salad or sweet potato fries, which was surprising since we weren't warned of this shortage beforehand. Refills and additional drinks proved difficult to obtain despite our table being close to the kitchen. It seemed our waitress might have been overwhelmed or unsure of our needs. The crab sandwich was particularly disappointing--it was dry, lacked flavor, and at $48 for what appeared to be canned crab, it was not worth the price. I regret not asking if the crab was fresh. Overall, while the drinks and view are reasons to return, I'd choose another spot for a full meal. My kids got pasta one with marinara sauce and the other with just butter. We also order garlic fries and corn riblets. Appetizers were good, the rest not so much. We got adult entrees and 1 kids meal first. Took 5 extra minutes for the pasta with butter. Once my husband cut into his steak he realized the waiter never asked how he wanted his steak cooked. We really like Monica's. Especially in the morning on a day off to enjoy breakfast and a nice view. A few years ago, they had these wonderful eggs that were golden-colored in the yolks, but our server said they got rid of them because people didn't like the color?? Now they are the more "standard" yellow color, but my husband and I truly miss those gold eggs. They had so much flavor. We were sad to see them go for such a silly reason. Apart from that, the breakfast menu is great. I usually get the French toast, and my husband usually gets one of the Eggs Benedicts. The portions are HUGE and you get a lot of food for the money. The price point matches, in my opinion. The sausage patties are phenomenal! I recommend those, if you get to choose what side comes with your order. They also have espresso drinks, which is great. Sometimes I want something other than drip coffee, so a nice latte is always nice to have as an option! The mimosas are also great, if that is what you prefer. We had the steak and cheese sandwich with a side salad and the holiday turkey sandwich with garlic fries, both were incredible. Ms assistant manager with red hair had to be related to Monica there is no way she got the position from performance. She was horrible ! Everyone at the bar was rude ! One good thing out of this experience was a beautiful soul named Oak she was the best waiter I have ever had ! I have been to Monica's 3 times in total. Each visit had its own unique experience that inspired followup dine-in moments to help me grasp a more complete picture of this restaurant. First, the food. For the area, it's not bad at all. I have had some hits and misses here (i.e. from having a great tuna melt with hot crispy fries to finding hard shells in my questionable crab Benedict). The ambiance of this location is quaint & charming. Almost like the Far-East Bay version of eating at some cozy country kitchen on the Mississippi. The service, I think -- is where it all falls apart for me. Staff in bad moods, check-in anxiety from the door crew (as in--telling you you're going to be waiting much longer than you actually will--which almost gets comical). Some of the folks that work here are a lot more on top of it than others, but the kitchen cook should NEVER have to run their own food out. I feel like this is the type of place Tabitha Coffey or Gordon Ramsey would have fun flipping around in a week. It's not a total loss--and I'm happy it's still in business...I just know it could be so much more with a few tweaks and honest effort to tighten up a ship that feels like it's slowly sinking. read more

The wait to be seated wasn't too long but once we were seated, the service was pretty slow and we waited about an hour for our food to come out. I got the jumbo shrimp omelette and for $27 I was sad to only have 3 shrimp in the omelette. The dining room was SUPER loud, a couple family members orders came out incorrectly and an item never came out so we had to make sure it didn't end up on the bill. The parking lot was very jam packed and I had to park across the train tracks on the other street. Cannot go wrong with Monica's. I've been on two occasions now and the service as well as food have been fantastic. On the weekend, this place is busy and it's best to either arrive right at opening or plan for a wait. There is a small bar cart in the front waiting area that is great during warmer weather. Also expect a bit of a wait for service, but someone does come to get drink menus and let you know. Communication is key and my weekend group appreciated our server being prompt and also helping set expectations for our wait. We were happy To be informed and managed a 5-10 minute wait to put our orders in. Coming during the week results in faster seating and you get all the same foods. Just the ambiance is different during the week. Portion sizes are big, so bring an appetite or feel free to take your leftovers. I've had the large French toast dish and an omelette dish. Both times the food was fresh, served hot and nicely presented. Even the fruit was fresh. No soggy melons. Prices are average for a breakfast spot, about $15 to $20 per entree depending on your order. For a great experience, plan your time accordingly and remember wait staff are human beings too. Stopped by yesterday, Saturday, August 2 about 7 PM for some dinner. We ordered the prime rib, we split it as we are not real big eaters, it was plenty for the both of us. We told the waitress we were going to split it, it came out on one plate, we had to ask for an extra plate and an extra steak knife. We ordered the prime rib medium, it was well done, we just sucked it up and ate it, not going to order that again. The yukon gold potatoes with gravy was super delicious until we quickly noticed the abundance of crunchy salt dumped over the top of them. They really should leave the salt to the patrons, some people can't have that much salt. I asked for some horseradish, the guy looked at me like I was asking for something out of the ordinary, most steakhouses that serve prime rib also offer horseradish, 10 minutes later he brought me out a big serving bowl of horseradish lol. Needless to say our $56 prime rib was a disappointment, not going to order that again. The prices are just so high, it's just easier to stay home and cook a good meal and then just go out for drinks, but even those are real costly, $12-15 for a cocktail, crazy!! Wait was over 45mins, but they had plenty of empty table. We ended up having to sit in the bar area. Once there the lady that cleared our table was great, but then someone else took over. That server left us unattended after our food arrived. When we were ready to checkout we waited over 15 mins for someone to come around. Food was good, but pricy. Parking was difficult, we parked down the street past the train tracks. Bathroom doors did NOT lock, both the men's and women's. Toilet was filthy. read more

If I could, I would give Zero Stars, but in order to make a review, you need to give at least 1 star 1.) We had to wait over 1 hour and a half just to be seated, while there were Open Tables available. 2.) I told the waitress, Iris, from the beginning, when we first sat down, that it was the Hubby's Birthday & that we wanted to celebate him. 3.) The Ladies Bathroom - did not have any Papertowels to dry your hands, so I had to ask one of the waitresses for napkins to dry my hands. 4.) To top it off, after our Brunch, the Waitress completely forgot to celebrate my hubby's Birthday with either the "Tequila Shot" or the "Birthday Cupcake" and had the nerve to stand there, waiting for a 20% Minimum Tip? Bummer. Everything has gone downhill except for the friendly servers. Eggs are smaller and lower quality, coffee is no longer great, no more cream in cute little bottles only CoffeeMate (?!), biscuits are now topped with gravy instead of smothered, the "home made" jam promised on the menu was a pack of Smuckers Blackberry... absolutely disappointing overall.
