The food here is freakin' awesome. Fresh, flavorful, and definitely the highlight of the experience--my seared ahi was excellent (though with a $132 bill pre tip and two cocktails, I expected both premium food and service). Unfortunately, the service didn't match the food. Our waiter was a bit off--cold and not very friendly until the very end when the bill came. The pacing felt rushed: he asked for our cocktail order, and just five minutes later pushed for our dinner order. We specifically booked a reservation because Monkeypod is known for its sunset view. Instead, we were seated at a high-top behind the bar, nowhere near the ocean. We asked to move to a low-top closer to the ocean side, but were told it would be a 45-minute wait because they "needed the table back." The kicker was when the waiter said that in the future the only way to get a better table is to not reserve, but instead walk up and ask the host at the front. Felt a little jipped by that explanation--doesn't exactly make you want to plan ahead here. read more

Monkeypod Kitchen has been one of our absolute favorite spots in Oahu for the past two years. Every time my family and I visit, it's a must on our list. We usually end up eating here several times each trip. The service is always excellent, and the view simply can't be beat. Food is also delicious. This morning, we came in for breakfast with family and friends, and our server, Josh, truly stood out. My husband immediately recognized him from our last visit, and just like before, his service was exceptional. Josh went above and beyond not just serving us, but genuinely taking care of us and making the experience special. Always one that we would visit when we were in Maui and didn't realize there's one in Honolulu. Went for Mai Tai's and truffle fries since we were coming from dinner. To me Monkeypod still has one of the best Mai Tai's - it's the foam! This place is huge and I can imagine it gets busy. We sat by the water but hard to see the gorgeous view because it was night time. You're right on the water and can hear the waves. Monkeypod is located at the Outrigger Hotel. Although we requested to sit with the ocean view to celebrate a special occasion, no tables were available. We weren't acknowledged either when we made this reservation through Open Table but that's fine. We had the chicken wings (large portion) which were very salty and cold. For entrees, we shared the fish and chips as well as the truffle mushroom pizza. The fries on the fish and chips were cold but the fish itself was very good. The mushroom truffle pizza was the thin, wood fired type which is my favorite. But the main reason we came here was for the strawberry pie. It tastes as good as it looks. Four stars for the pie and the live music. He was very good. Although we weren't acknowledged celebrating a special occasion (engagement) we still had a nice dinner here at Monkeypod. read more

This is my favorite restaurant at Waikiki. The restaurant literally sits on the edge of the water. So close you are soothed by the sound of crashing waves. They had an artist singing and playing live music while we were there. Ambiance really cannot be beat! The best Maitai I've ever had with the most incredible Lilikoi foam to top it off. The memory of this drink has been living in my head rent free since I first tried it in Maui years ago. I came for lunch with friends and had the Fresh Caught Fish Tacos with a Mai Tai. For dessert we got the Strawberry Cream Pie. So good! Everything had great flavor. The second time I came with my husband for our anniversary date and got the Seared Ahi Steak with jalapeño mashed potatoes. For dessert they gave us a piece of the Banana Cream Pie. We ate at the Monkeypod three times this week - twice for breakfast and once for dinner. Our breakfast server, Mitchell, was incredibly friendly, and gave wonderful food AND travel recommendations. His positive energy was a breath of fresh air after a long couple of days of travel. We ordered different things for breakfast each day, and each day the meals were unique and fun! I found monkeypod on the surf amid the beautiful rolling waves of Waikiki beach. I heard two young girls yelling thst they'd "meet their friend over there!" Our dinner spot was decided-- you have to trust the locals! We found a spot at the bar, under an adornment of surfboards, and marveled at the beauty of the place. We ordered a mai tai and asked the bartender what to get-- he was so friendly and offered the pork bulgogi tacos and the ahi steak. I figured why not both? The pork bulgogi tacos were incredible, extremely rich and I live in taco world as a san diegan. And the ahi steak was luxurious. So good, so indescribably excellent. The sauces were like paint on the plate, and you could mix them in any direction to taste beauty, aloha. Green eggs and ham? Try green spiced mash potatoes why not. The greens were so excellent too. We booked reservations here after getting recommendations from a friend. Even though I specifically requested a table with an oceanside view, we were seated in the corner section right below a very loud music speaker. Our table of four could barely hear each other speak. When the hostess first seated us, the table was still dirty and we had to stand and wait another 5 minutes for someone to come clean it. He took his wet dirty washrag and swept the lemon seeds onto us standing there. We should have known at that time this would not be a great value. Our waiter had zero personality. He rattled off the specials and didn't even wait for a response...and we did have a couple questions about the menu, but he ran off so quickly that we barely got a chance to ask. Because of the loud speaker, my husband didn't even hear what the waiter said at all. The food was okay. For the prices, there are definitely better options in Waikiki and definitely with much friendlier Aloha spirit. We will not be returning on any of our future trips to Hawaii nor would we recommend this place to friends. The only thing that was nice about it was the view of the ocean. Management definitely needs to train their staff better. Even the hostesses didn't smile, weren't polite, weren't friendly at all. I liked the food here, the bulgogi pork tacos are better here than at the KoOlina location. I loved the ambiance, ocean front dining is always a plus. The newly renovated place is great! It's way nicer than the KoOlina location, and it's so much nicer than Shorebird, the restaurant it replaced. The parking here is a slap in the face to locals who live here. Their "validated" parking rates for the valet are $4/30min, $15 flat 4-hr. No self-parking. You can eat at Royal Hawaiian, International Marketplace, Stix Asia, pretty much anywhere in Waikiki and not have a hefty $15 parking fee with validation. So it looks like they will cater to only the tourists, because locals will not be regular customers if the parking situation doesn't change. read more

Monkeypod is located at the back of the Outrigger Reef Hotel. This place is definitely a tourist spot. We had made an 8pm dinner reservation and were still given a buzzer. Took about 20min before we were able to be seated! Despite the delay the hostesses and server were amazing. Service was quick and our server was extremely helpful in selecting our meals and giving us pointers based on dietary restrictions. Food however was pretty meh. Nothing to write home about. My friend got the seared ahi steak and I got the fish tacos. Presentation for both was okay. Ahi steak was smaller than expected for the price. Fish tacos were a little dry and bland. I get a zero proof drink, Green Fevah, and it was super refreshing. Restaurant was clean and the ocean view was nice if you get there before sun down. There was also live music which was great. I did need to park my car as there was not any street parking available nearby so I valeted. It was $15 on a Tuesday night with the restaurants validation. read more

I want to start off with our service was AMAZING. our server was so sweet and caring!! I would give her 100/10!! (To the restaurant: I'm sorry I forgot her name, but please look 10/27 around 7-9pm next to the ocean side seats)! There was a huge bee suddenly stayed on my husbands face, and then stayed around our table area. I had to stand up and stay away from the table, the server would try to look for it and making sure I'm not allergic to the bee and she offered I can switch tables. She made sure the bee was gone before telling me it's safe to go back to my seat. The food were pretty good! My gnocchi was a bit mushy so it's kind of tasted like mashed potatoes. But the sauce and everything tasted so good and seasoned very well. The pizza was originally too salty, we had to ask for remake, they were happily to and made sure the pizza was seasoned less salty and we didn't have to wait long for it. Our server offered us 2 pieces of cake, because of my birthday and the salty pizza. I got the banana cream pie and my husband got the strawberry cheesecake cream pie. They both tasted amazing! It's a must get! I also want to mention their cocktails tasted so good! I personally loved the espresso martini but it's called something else in their cocktail list, just ask them and they will tell you more details about it. I booked 2 months prior to make sure we had a great table. Warmly greeted and seated at our reservation time. We had an elevated booth which delivered fantastic views of Waikiki Beach - at sunset. We ordered 2 Hand-Tossed Pizzas as starters. The Hamakua Mushroom and Truffle and Margherita. Both were tasty, the Margherita had a bit of a kick. For mains we had House-made Gnocchi, Hirabarba Farm Caesar Salad, Fresh Island Fish Sandwich and Fresh Caught Fish Tacos. All were great, for me there was a little too much spice on my Fish Sandwich, left me with quite a burn sensation - in particular the pickles. For cocktails the House Signature Mai Tai, which I understand was the best one ever. I had the Ho'opono Potion which was very good, my companions ordered the Pina Colada blended style which came in a tall tiki glass (very cool- see photo). Love that they practice the farm-to-table concept with their menu items. We started off with their signature cocktail -- Monkeypod Mai Tai. Our server warned us they were strong and she did not lie! I was buzzing pretty hard and had only have the glass, which I gave my wife the other half since she has a higher alcohol tolerance, and gladly accepted more. We shared the scrumptious Shrimp & Hamakua Mushroom Potstickers and wished we did not have to share because they were super savory. TLDR: Pricy but great vibes. Recommend to come during happy hour. COCKTAILS: Boo got the Mai Tai, which they also serve at their sister restaurant Mofu. It comes with a Lilioki foam, which is the real star of the drink in my opinion (but I'm also obsessed with Lilioki). It's quite good but also a bit strong. I ordered the No Ka 'Oi, which based on their menu is ocean vodka, thai basil, lime, honey-lilikoi puree. It was DELICIOUS. You couldn't taste the alcohol which is what I prefer. It's basically a Lilioki cocktail, which is exactly what I wanted! Would definitely order again. Note that happy hour pricing is $4 off cocktails, but that still brought each cocktail to $14. Pricey! FOOD: Boo and I shared the Corn Chowder and Pumpkin Ravioli because apps were half off for happy hour (doesn't include their seafood options, happy hour is 3:30-5pm). I really liked the corn chowder, which is made with coconut milk and some Thai seasoning including lemongrass and Thai basil. Unique and delicious! Served with some bread (which they refilled for free) was yum, would get again. Pumpkin Ravioli was pretty good - good presentation, good taste, but nothing that knocked my socks off. I would try something different if I went again. SERVICE: Our waitress was kind of awkward but really friendly and attentive. Service was fast and we were never waiting very long. Overall was good! AMBIANCE: This is what you come here for. They have live music during happy hour! The guy performing on guitar was great. The worst pizza I've had in my life! I was staying at the Outrigger and decided to get a pizza here cause it was so close and the pictures looked pretty good. Placed a phone order and picked up within 15-20 mins. For a small pizza that fed like 2 people, it was pretty expensive and around $26. The crust wasn't even crusting! It was as thin as a tortilla and all the cheese and toppings just slid off. I even tried folding my pizza in half to hold up everything but it made the pizza even less enjoyable. Without a doubt, the worst pizza I've ever had in my life! Not only did the pizza lacked flavor, it lacked quality and not worth the money whatsoever. I said that I preferred a seat with an ocean view and the hostess made that happen. Was the highlight of the vacation. The restaurant was a little hard to find, but just keep walking to the back of Outrigger resort. We came during happy hour and appetizers were half off (except any that had seafood) and cocktails were $4 off so we decided to just have apps and a couple of drinks. The poke tacos are a must have. Fish was fresh and nicely seasoned, shells crispy, and the avocado cream sauce was a perfect touch. Even though it was not part of the 1/2 off appetizers, it was worth it! The garlic truffle oil fries were good, nothing special, but it hit the spot. The roasted chicken wings were a bit dry and small, not terrible for happy hour price but not worth it for $22 full price. The drinks were amazing. The strawberry margarita was definitely strong, but good. The pina colada was probably the best that I've had, perfectly creamy and decadent. Dangerous! Our server even gave me a sample of the honey-lilikoi foam on top of the mai tais and it was TO DIE FOR. Definitely coming back just for that. Our server was super sweet and attentive to our needs. She even offered to replace our vegan tortilla soup free of charge when I mentioned it was too spicy for my grandma. It was good, just not my grandma's taste. Our server recommended the monkey business saimin which is part of the kids menu, but was a simple chicken broth with ramen-like noodles which was perfect for my grandma.
