We came here for Easter Brunch and it was the absolutely best brunch I have ever had. The chicken fried steak with avocado gravy was fantastic. The best breakfast ever. My wife had the Florentine Benedict and it was so good, my wife ate all of it. My husband and I had the Summer Tasting Menu at Mono Inn on Monday night 8/21. We loved everything about the experience. We both added the wine pairing. We loved the food and cocktails so much that we returned a week later! The Mono Inn is unsuspecting from the road. As you descend into the dining room, extraordinary views of Mono Lake greet you - followed by a meal that outcompetes that of any Michelin restaurant in San Francisco. Their local and seasonal menu is designed with the utmost creativity and care. The staff and owner, Hilary, are down to earth, friendly, and knowledgeable. Rather than a stiff and polite atmosphere known for many fine dining establishments, I felt just as comfortable in my "fancy jeans" as I did my leggings after a day spent climbing. We had an amazing meal. The views of the lake and the ambiance added to the experience. The presentation and service was only matched by the cuisine itself. We shared the asparagus, pesto and burrata-very tasty.I had the lollipop lamb chops served on an incredible pea mash beautifully presented with an edible flower. My husband had a tomahawk of pork that was an enormous piece of meat that despite its size was cooked perfectly. It was topped with a sautéed green ( kale?) and a fresh cherry compote. The owner came by to chat and had our waitress bring a complimentary cocktail of the day. We had no room for dessert but took home enough for a second meal. For the quality of food the prices are fair. We look forward to our next visit to the Eastern Sierra area so we can return to the Mono Inn.! read more

I can't stop talking about this place. I wish we had more reason to drive the 395 (we're from Southern California), because Mono Inn is SO good. We found this via Yelp, and thought this looked too good to be true. Pardon my naïveté, but we've never really stopped anywhere on the 395 that looked as good as the Mono Inn looked on paper. I called the restaurant ahead of time to make sure they were open, and could fit us. Hillary, who I spoke with, was so kind and welcoming, we instantly felt good about our decision to dine there. Two and a half hours later, we arrived to find a building that looked like a quaint restaurant in a big city, and we walked right on in. Instantly, we were greeted and seated right by the fire. The decor was rustic, but new (we heard so many amazing stories of the history of the building and the antique pieces that gave it such character!), and ready to welcome diners! everything that we ordered, from our daughter's lemonade (with a dried blood orange slice) and chicken tenders (way too good to be a kids menu) to our maple old fashioned, Brussels sprouts, squash soup, the gnudi pasta (a really cool gnocchi-ish pasta made with ricotta), to the burger (OH THE BURGER), and the molten chocolate lava cake and earl grey pan a cotta. But seriously, the burger was unbelievable--foie gras, onion jam, bacon...wow! You have to order that. Showstopper. And the wine menu was awesome. You can sit at the bar or at tables with a presumably great view (it was regrettably dark) of the lake. We will find more reasons to head up this way! read more

So thankful this place is back in business! The new owner has done a fantastic job with the menu, food, ambiance, and service. I ordered the asparagus with pesto and burrata (the asparagus was cooked perfectly) and the Ricotta Gnudi (the homemade tomato sauce was fantastic). My husband and I wanted to take advantage of our time-off from work by visiting Mono Lake over Thanksgiving. We looked on monocounty.org to find restaurants open and were pleased to see a special four-course dinner at Mono Inn. After making a reservation with a very pleasant woman we were excited to learn about all the work going into making everything special (it was going to be the first holiday service for the new owners). Upon arrival, the place had a very cozy atmosphere with music playing lightly and the wood burning fireplace lit.The servers immediately thanked us for being there on a holiday and were top-notch the whole night. Most importantly the food was great! Even though the servings were huge somehow we managed to eat everything. I highly recommend if you are in the area on a holiday!! read more

First dining experience with the new ownership and it was excellent! Great setting, new winter menu, and a passionate new owner. Their long term vision was exciting to hear and my bet is they will succeed! Our pork chop and filet were tender, moist, and flavorful. Cooked to perfection. Enjoyed a fabulous meal last night at the Mono Inn. Chef Jason Custer currently has a five-course fall tasting menu that is offered. However, we are vegans and asked in advance if a vegan meal could be prepared for us instead. Chef Jason came through with an absolutely amazing five-course vegan meal for us. Loved this little diamond tucked away in Lee Vining! The atmosphere, hospitality, ambiance (warm fire roaring from the large stone hearth, smooth jazz in the background, soft lighting) all made for a perfect evening. We started with the butternut squash soup, which was silky soft, hot, and drizzled with olive oil and topped with fresh micro greens. We both ordered the nightly special, which was fresh cod from Washington along with homemade spaetzle and perfectly seared broccolini. And since we were celebrating a birthday, we topped off the meal with some homemade semifreddo - a must! Will definitely make a return trip! read more

Newly reopened a week ago with new owners Hillary and Tom, this place is simply great. First, you cannot beat the view. We watched the clouds change colors as the sun set and then the moon came out over the water. Ambience...check. What about the restaurant. All I can say is, simply great. We were greeted at the door and shown to our table with the great view. Our server was knowledgeable about the food and wine and helped guide us through the menu. The first thing we noticed was that the menu was concise but varied enough to please just about anyone. We started with a special, Hamachi Crudo. None of those thin slices on a plate with some sauce, this was thick, beautiful sashimi slabs with orange, avocado and a sauce. Simply wonderful. For the mains we had the bison and duck dish. Again, perfectly executed and delicious. For dessert, we had to try all three desserts, and they did not disappoint. So, why is this place so great. It's simple, the owners have decided to make a great restaurant and they recruited one of the best up and coming farm-to-table chefs from the Pacific Northwest, Jason Custer! Truth be known, we came because we enjoyed Chef Jay's food when he was in the Seattle area. When we found out he was at the Mono Inn, we had to try his new place. Simply fabulous. I expect that next time we come we'll have to make reservations weeks in advance. read more

Oh. My. God. Stumbled across this place after striking out in mammoth lakes on a Friday night. Absolutely, hands down, the best meal I've had in months, maybe years. Beef tartare is the best I've ever had. Pork cheeks were amazing. Didn't even need a knife for the filet. Everything was a 10 out of 10. Looked like they had an impressive cocktail list, but I had a long drive ahead of me so I didn't get to explore it. This place is worth the drive. I actually said to my friend when we left mammoth lakes "maybe we struck out so we could find a hidden gem somewhere between here and Carson City," and we did. Come eat here. You absolutely will not regret it. This is maybe the third time in my life I've felt the need to write a Yelp review. Everyone needs to know about this place. Family owned, Tom and Hillary are awesome. Beyond the food you can tell they genuinely love the place and the process. Just eat here. Period. read more
