This place has the worst pizza I've ever had, but I will remember it fondly forever. My friends and I started out on an epic bike ride from Cambridge one Saturday morning with only two purposes 1) get lost on the north shore and 2) make it to Monte's for dinner. One of my friends had heard about it and was fairly certain that it was going to be the best pizza ever. So for the majority of our ambling ride--from Chelsea where we paddled kayaks and drank beer, to Revere beach where we ate fried clams and drank beer, to Nahant where we listened to rock music on a golf course and drank beer (and lost each other briefly and went swimming), to Lynn where we didn't do much of anything--we made frequent reference to how awesome our pizza dinner was going to be. Yes, perhaps we had over-hyped it at bit, but we were also truly hungry when we arrived, so it should have been a pretty easy sell. Our hunger prompted us to order the antipasti as an appetizer, a family style salad and a couple of pizzas with all kinds of toppings. When the antipasti arrived we were not impressed: a bunch of canned meats and cheeses in a bowl. And when the salad arrived we were also unimpressed: a bunch of canned vegetables on junk lettuce. So you can imagine that we were doubly unimpressed when the pizzas arrived covered in the same vegetables, meats and cheeses that we had just suffered through! This is not be mention the mediocrity of the base pizza itself. Not a happy camper. Got Monte's take out dinners tonight for the family and I must say, I am extremely dissatisfied. My wife's meatball parm. consisted of 2 meatballs swimming in a bowl full of sauce covered with cheese. 1/2 BBQ chicken looked more like squab, and the fries that came with the 3 dinners wouldn't fill just one of the half opened fry boxes that were thrown in the bag. My son's veal parm. was acceptable, as was my chicken parm, although I had to upgrade to the chicken breast rather than the standard frozen breaded patty that is used in their regular chicken parm order. No beer taps, and very little money spent on decor (even after recent renovations). The ambiance is more than subdued unless you consider the frequent rumbling of the train overhead. So why go? Authenticity: this is Lynn. The place is just off-putting enough to keep the Yuppies in the new condos across the street from wandering in and ruining the neighborhood. Pizza is cheap and so is just about everything else on the menu. Most people seem to be of the Bud and Silver Bullet set, but you can always get a bottle of Sam and feel sophisticated. Its a small hole in the wall, kinda looks like a diner or something you would find on the side of the road. Built right next to some train tracks its feels & sounds like a earth quake every so often. This place is small & the parking lot is even smaller. For years they've suffered from not enough parking. When the piece of property next door went up for sale, instead or buying it they let it go ( don't know the story) and now they have even less parking. They did some exterior remolding & added a larger waiting area inside, but it seems they might have run out of funds as the dinning room seems no larger & the bar area was touched even less. Sitting at the bar is like being on an old episode of Batman from the 60's, if you let go of your of drink it would slide to the other end of the bar. But back the food. This place is the nuts. My Auntie Meems suggested it for dinner. I haven't been there in a few years. The inside is slightly roomier than it was when I was a kid. My uncle Paul used to live across the street from it. We ran into a guy my aunt knew, and he sat with us and had a beer. And left way too much money for it, and basically paid for our meal. Score! My favorite things there are always the 2 things I get: an order of fries as an appetizer and a meatball pizza. There is just something about both that brings me back to 1982-1990. Unfortunately I had a bad experience here today. We picked up an order to go as I was rushing to get myself and the kids fed before work. The large pizza is very small - a medium at most places. But the sauce is very good. I ordered a burger and it was probably the worst burger I've ever had. The tomato was rotten and ruined the flavor of the burger despite taking the tomato out. We have been customers of Montes forever. Not gourmet food but it was always consistent. Our last meal was just terrible. They have changed the chicken cordon bleu and not for the better. Worst pizza. I went there when I was young in the 60's, and didn't think it was too good back then. Tried again about 10 years ago; thought it was pretty bad. My wife kept hearing how good this was, and we gave it a (final!) try yesterday. This was obviously previously frozen, and not as good as most store bought frozen pizza available today. People either seem to love the pizza or hate the pizza - I think it's pretty good, but not the best out there. It's a little annoying that the pizza only comes in one small size, because if you're having a big party, you have to lug a lot of boxes. The meals are good, but not spectacular. Ask for the salad dressing on the side or else your salad will arrive drowning in dressing. Baked dishes (e.g. baked ziti) come slathered in cheese that has the same temperature as the surface of the sun. For dinner and a show, eat at the bar; the locals are always interesting.
