8/12/2023- Finally made it to one of the dinners! I've had it sitting bookmarked forever (2017)... I would of missed the event if I wasn't checking out Yelp and checking fellow Yelper's check in's.. (Thanks to seeing Jennifer's check in).. we were actually eating dinner at BJ's across town... I called to make sure they still had dinners available and they said yes and come on down! Purchased three teriyaki chicken dinners.. (all for the out of town son visiting later tonight).. also had a vegan dinner with tofu ..which I should tried as well.. Inside the box: homemade teriyaki chicken cucumber salad, Japanese Rice and mochi. Serving size was rather small.. and you can't expect it to be like the Japanese church (in Sac.) like their food bazaars...more like a sampling of foods.. Cash or Venmo accepted and whatever donation for the meal.. had a nice crispy $20 bill to donate.. Atmosphere was pleasant and a beautiful late Saturday.. I have been wanted to visit Moon Rabbit Cafe for a loooong time, and finally made it Obon Festival 8/12! Lovely little dinner with great music and dancing, fantastic drums from Reno Taiko Tsurunokai, and met so many wonderful people that made us feel welcome and wanted there. I appreciate the kindness shown to us and others, and am so happy to get to visit the Reno Buddhist Temple for events like MRC! read more

Japanese Bento boxes for this months dinner. Superb! Marinated chicken, cucumber salad, soba noodles and a tri-colored mochi for dessert. A wonderful meal and full a great flavors. These bi-monthly events are great for the community and bring a lot of people together to enjoy food and friendship. Love supporting them and the community support they provide. I love going to the Moon Rabbit Cafe every other month! They always post the date and time on their Facebook page or website so be sure to check when the next dinner is. The dinners are usually on Saturdays from 4 pm to 6 or 7 pm. Each dinner has a different theme so it's never the same! This is a pay what you can meal - $5 covers the meal for yourself and $10 covers a meal for yourself and another. There are also volunteer opportunities. Donations are currently accepted on GoFundMe for prepaying in advance or you could pay in person as well (no change for cash currently). With COVID, they've gone with outdoor seating on the lawn, dine-in your car, or drive-through, pick-up, and go. The parking lot is pretty easy to see as you're driving to the location. You'll see all the volunteers outside with a shade covering. They will direct you to where to park and then will walk up to get your order and deliver the food. Their meals are pretty tasty with the different volunteer chefs. In all the meals I've gotten, they usually come with an appetizer, main entree, dessert, and drink. I haven't been disappointed with any dinners yet. Will definitely be stopping by again whenever this community cafe pops up! read more

The dates and menus are always changing. Atmosphere - Enjoying their new place in Sparks. We were able to grab a table as Brad and I where the first ones in the door. Food Every time Moon Rabbit host they bring a chef from the local community. Tonight events was called Tasty Thai 2! Which made tonight possible for us was that the meal was gluten free. Drinks - Just water for me. Appetizer - We started with Thai salad which featured a lot of peanuts. Nothing to write home about. Dinner - Then dinner was either chicken curry or tofu curry. I am trying to be heathier and went with tofu, shocking the group which was not a surprise to me. I only gave up chicken, it was not cow. There was a lot of rice but the curry sauce was so tasty and I enjoyed this. Dessert - A small clear cup filled with rice pudding topped with a caramel banana yumminess which has a coconut crumble. Service - This is a fund raiser for the church. We arrived at 5:30 and was told 30 minute wait, it was really an hour. So waiting a bit was not an issue when you go with great friends. This pop-up event is an event that provides a tasty meal for the community. It is donation based and held together by volunteers, so those who cannot afford to donate can have a good meal too. For those who are more privilaged, I would encourage you to donate more than the suggested $5. This is a delicious meal for a good cause. The theme changes and today's event's theme is Middle Eastern. They have a Facebook page, and they are always looking for a chef. We were all greeted as we entered, and sat at a community table. All the staff were very attentive and passionate about the cause. My group had mint tea and water to drink. The meal included an appetizer, main and dessert. (Pictures provided) The meal was authentic, confirmed by my middle eastern friend, who also was in attendance. I truly enjoyed this experience. Great food and great company. I was hesitant to write this review because I didn't feel like the staff was excited about advertising. I didn't really get clarity on what they meant but I will guess that they want to make sure people are attending for the cause and not taking advantage. A good balance of different people to contribute and benefit from this event would be ideal. They have a limited amount of people they can serve for the event. I was looking for ways to be of service to the community and reached out using Yelp! This search lead me to find the opportunity to volunteer with Moon Rabbit Cafe! Their website allows you to fill out an informational form and you can choose which shifts to work. You will receive a confirmation email within the next week. I had to make time adjustments and was able to communicate back and forth with Reverend Shelley right away! Where the day of the event, there is a good area for street parking around the temple. Fortunately the door was open and I walked through to the kitchen where food preparation was being explained by guest Chef Tina of The Burnt Orange. I was then greeted by Rev. Shelley and started prep soon after. I had a colleague I was partnered with to prepare dessert plating. The Chef was very awesome and patient with communicating the how-to of our project. It was a little tricky fitting the cake slices in the dessert plates, but chef demonstrated a solution for players fitting. The host made note of this concern, a while later, so a bit of communication was stalled but not all hope was lost. I then helped prepare more sides and was able to get to know Chef Mike, who told me about the history of Moon Rabbit Cafe. More volunteers came in and got acquainted very quickly. The connections and conversations made the environment feel safe and comfortable event when kitchen catering is a hectic duty. The pleasant staff and chef's were great to work with! I was glad to find this event and pay it forward for a few hours! What an excellent place to sit with members of your community, enjoy a delicious meal, and chat with your companions. Moon Rabbit Cafe lives inside the Reno Buddhist Center and serves a community meal on Saturdays from 4-8. This pay-what-you-can mentality is vital to their mission, ensuring that even the most downtrodden among us have the opportunity to partake in a wholesome, delicious meal. They request a $5 donation if you can. The chef for the evening is different each time, and if you're a budding chef/sous chef/chef-in-training, they are looking for more people to take up the Moon Rabbit Helm for the evening. This month, Chef Naaz Rejoub, owner of Reno's Midtown Market, was the chef of the evening and prepared delicious Middle Eastern fare for us. Our resident Middle Eastern food expert, Linda H., declared it delicious, a resounding endorsement. The menu included tabbouleh (parsley and bulgar salad with lemon, tomatoes, and olive oil), hummus, gyros, dolmades (flavored rice wrapped in grape leaves), chai cupcakes, and baklava. Everything was fresh and delicious. In addition to eating a fantastic meal, I'm now super excited to go check out the market Chef Rejoub owns. We were welcomed graciously and frequently by everyone there, and the volunteer servers did an excellent job at keeping us all fat and happy. Once a month my family looks forward to visiting the Moon Rabbit Café. Used to be a hidden treasure but now that word is out, it simply remains a treasure! Downstairs in the Reno Buddhist Center, be prepared for a warm and genuine welcome, family style seating with a healthy menu that satisfies all tastes and diets. Each month we see foods from different countries featured, this most recent visit was a salute to the French palette, with a plated "Coq au Vin', an appetizer of Gruyere crostini with a delicious onion jam. Always a vegetarian option available. A wonderful dessert always awaits along with your choice of beverages. I really recommend the Moon Rabbit Café for its fun food, charming atmosphere, meeting new friends and being made to feel they are so glad you came to enjoy! So, I was invited to moon rabbit cafe for their occasional community feed. It was hosted at the Reno Buddhist Center. They feature a different chef each time, this was my first time so I enjoyed a Thai peanut salad, vegan curry over white rice with tofu and rice pudding for desert. The atmosphere was like a cafeteria, long table seating with multiple parties sitting next to each other. The most unique part of the dinner was that it was donation based, it's a way of giving back to the community and raising money for various causes. Reno Buddhist Center is beautiful. It was a preset menu with little variety but I imagine they do that to keep it simple and serve many. It was an experience in community more than anything and it was pleasing to know everyone was volunteering their time to serve so many. This is a busy event, be prepared to wait and keep in mind the cause and element of service that can't be matched in a traditional setting. I can't wait to go again! read more

In many east Asian cultures, the craters and seas of the moon are interpreted as the image of a rabbit. Origin stories of this lunar leporid generally involve a theme of community, respect, and self-sacrifice. These allegorical traditions are the inspiration behind a once-a-month dinner served at the Moon Rabbit Cafe, a pay-what-you-can community effort staffed by volunteers at the Reno Buddhist Center (every third Saturday, 4pm-8pm). Dining is done family style, with long tables of about 12 seats each and a total capacity of 80. We waited for roughly 30 minutes to be seated, and the staff tell me they served a record crowd of over 200 that evening. The aromas coming from the dining room were so enticing we didn't mind a bit on the wait, and the volunteer staff did a bang-up job keeping things friendly and feeling unrushed, all while moving folks through at a decent pace. Each month a different theme is chosen, often with a guest chef creating the menu. April's theme was "Ooh La La Paris in the Spring", featuring some classic French dishes, each with a little twist showcasing the chef's creativity. First course was a canapé plate of crostini with toasted gruyere, a jam of caramelized onion and rosemary, garnished with fresh chives and chive blossoms. The appearance and flavor was akin to a deconstructed French onion soup, with a nice touch of garden freshness. There were two entrées to choose from--one vegan, one not--both served with an arugula salad dressed in lemon and fennel seed vinaigrette. By itself the salad was a star on the plate, the peppery flavor of arugula pairing perfectly with the seasoned, slightly tart dressing. Layered ratatouille filled the vegan role, with green zucchini, yellow squash, and roma tomatoes. A thick, pureed sauce made from the vegetable ends, eggplant, red bell pepper, onion, lemon, rosemary, and oil perfectly bound it all together. Definitely one of the most flavorful squash-based dishes I've been served. As if that wasn't enough, the chef's take on coq au vin started with chicken thighs marinated in pinot noir, seared in bacon fat, then braised in a blend of wine and housemade veggie stock. Combined with roasted red potatoes and turnips--and carrots sauteed in butter and cardamom--the resulting flavor profile was very well developed, subtle, and truly delicious. Beverages included ice water, tea, coffee, and a spritzer that appeared to be a blend of concord grape juice and seltzer water. The spritzer didn't really work for me--reminding me of Kiddie Coolers my parents used to order for us tykes--but the coffee was quite good, very robust and a perfect pairing with dessert. Provided by a local bakery, dessert was a delicate little lemon and raspberry tartlet served a la mode. It featured a nice balance of tart and sweet, with a single whole raspberry right in the center. A perfect end to a great meal. I found the pay-what-you-can concept a refreshing idea, allowing folks from all walks of life to enjoy a great meal together. Both while waiting to be seated and during the meal, it was hard not to connect and chat with perfect strangers enjoying the meal and the community vibe together. The next dinner is on May 21st, although the theme and chef are yet to be announced. I'm a regular, and love the change in cuisine each month! The food is wonderful, the volunteers absolutely rock....have met and talked with SO many interesting and diverse people over the few years I've come here. It's gotten quite busy, due to the 5-8pm vs 4-8pm schedule, but is alway worth the wait! Great food, and overall enlightening experience. I read about this in the Reno News and Review and thought it was a cool community event. The first one I went to was Italian themed and they had an antipasto, stuffed chicken, and tiramisu cupcake for desert! It was so good I donated $20! The next month they had it it was Cajun themed and we had shrimp and a huge helping of jambalaya and fresh made donuts. I really love going here and trying the different food, and everyone is so nice and friendly. We will definitely be back! read more
