This was one of the worst restaurants I have ever been too. The service was not good. The food was not good. The whole experience was awful. Our waiter did not inform us of extra charges that were added to our bill as well as when we questioned him about it he got an extremely rude attitude (constantly shaking his head, sighing and stormed away). We then asked for a manager who's attitude was just as bad. She kept shoving the menu in my face and raising her voice at me when I was just asking for answers as to why our bill was so high. The restaurant charged each ticket 18% gratuity because they said it was because we had a party larger than 6. Each of our tickets were split so the most was for 4 people not 6 but we all got charged the 18% for the terrible service. When we finally paid I gave the waiter our card and got the ticket back which showed that he charged us almost $100 more than our original ticket. My family who I was with and I (7 of us in total) got angry seeing that and when we brought it to the waiters attention he threatened to call the cops for being "aggressive" towards him even though the whole time he was being rude to us. All in all this was the worst experience my family has ever had at a restaurant. I've seen many reviews about Moondog that were not good so my advice is to avoid this place and find a place that you can actually enjoy. read more

Have to say we saw brochures and heard of Moon Dog and was recommended by a local hotel! Well after figuring out they were still open during construction, it took almost 20 minutes to be seated. We were the only ones standing at the hostess stand. A waitress came up to us a few times and told us, that the hostess would be right with us. ( I took that after the second time as it was not my job comment.) As we stood there and saw no one seated inside and a couple patrons at the bar and a about a half dozen waiter/waitresses chatting and basically not even seeing us as customers. The hostess finally came up to us to seat us. Not very professional of the waiter/waitresses to gossip in front of customers and give them no attention or to even help the hostess, who we had no idea where the hostess came from. Once we were seated in the patio area. We saw other frustrated customers just come in and seat themselves. There was maybe 6 tables of customers at that time and the staff seemed stressed. Our waitress was better but the food for seafood on water front restaurant seemed to be packaged food it did not taste as fresh seafood. The food was over cooked and just not very good. I can say, the patio area was a nice area to sit and see the water. Moon Dog looks like it has great potential but the staff just does not support itself. Been here quite a bit over the years and honestly, this is the best place in this town. My husband and I come here often and it's always been such a wholesome, friendly, place. They've done some new things recently where they built a whole new building for a kitchen, a bar, new bathrooms (yay!), and some new dining (I think?). Anyway, they've done a tremendous job. Some of our favorites are the fish tacos, brisket nachos, fresh oysters, and the crab cakes. All their seafood is incredibly fresh, and they've got some mean steaks too. Their patio stick out IN the water and the views from the deck are phenomenal. If you're looking for a great place, this is it. read more

I had the brisket and sausage unfortunately the chef doesn't know how to slice a brisket but it was good. My wife had the crab cakes for the second time. She loved them. it was a little on the chilly side the night we went so all the doors were closed and they do not have a non smoking seating area. read more

This was my second time at Moondogs, my family has a place a few blocks away and the location is convenient and the view of the bay is unbeatable. Unfortunately the food is over priced and only average. Tonight (6pm on January 17 2015) I ordered the stuffed salmon ($22) and a little over 3/4 done - once I'd gotten to the fat back of the piece of fish- I noticed it was still raw in the middle. I notified the waitress who just stared at me, shrugged, and asked if I wanted the kitchen to re-cook it. I told her no since I'd eaten most of it and re-cooking it in the kitchen is a fairly gross idea. We asked she notify the kitchen. She came back with the full bill and told me the kitchen had been notified. After paying the bill in full, we asked to talk to the manager who was equally unconcerned about serving raw fish and also told me I could have had the rest of it heated back up in the kitchen! Since we aren't much impressed with the food or the staff, nor do we like to eat only partially cooked meats, we won't be going back. Plus, when my dog was terrified by the neighbors fireworks we had no choice but to bring him with us.. They allowed us to take him upstairs. I'm not sure where to start the whole experience was terrible. We were seated inside and we asked to be outside so we make ourselves and the waitress came out there and just had the biggest fit and scolded us for five minutes in front of all the other guest. And once we decided to order we wanted to separate checks the waitress said no she's going to just put it on one for convince Once we ordered our food was delivered and the menu said grouper fish however they gave us redfish instead and left the red centered in the middle of the fish which gave it a horrible fishy flavor. As I was leaving I asked her comment card they said they don't do that here and I proceeded to tell the hostess that we had a bad experience and they switched fish in mine terrible she said we don't do that here ! The entire experience was absolutely horrible for a check of $200 and to be treated so ugly and to get such bad food I would not recommend Moondogs! read more

My wife and I went to this Eatery tonight and in initially ordered some drinks. My wife's Pina Colada was good, so was confident their food was good. BIG MISTAKE!!!! We had some crab cakes that should have been described as " CRAP CAKES " on their menu. Come on you guys, your suppose to be a SEAFOOD place. The crab cakes were stale and looked pitiful. I understand that sometimes people are hard to please, but this food tells us that you don't care about the quality of your food. read more

It takes a lot for me to complain about a restaurant or service- I was in the service industry for many years and things happen. However, our experience was absolutely unacceptable. We had a table of 7 with a baby and waited about 45 minutes due to inclement weather- not an issue. We were asked if we could split tables, which we agreed would be fine. The tables they took us to could have easily been pushed together- therefore we asked to see a manager to discuss this option, as it would have left more room for the wait staff to get around WERE they pushed together. The manager on duty let us know that it would be a fire hazard to move those specific tables together. That was also fine. She was not terribly nice at that point, but we were fine with it. We asked if we would be treated as one as far as getting out our food and drinks, and she replied that we would. We waited for 15 minutes at the table and no service. The waitress finally came to take the drink order and took only one tables order, and then walked away. At this point, we decided to leave. We walked to the same manager on duty and explained that we still had not been served, that the other table had and that we were leaving. She replied "Ok" repetitively as we explained why we were upset. Never once did she apologize for the situation or try to make anything better. After over an hour of waiting, we were basically pushed out the door, seeming like a problem to her. It was completely unprofessional and inappropriate. This is the first EVER negative review I have written on a restaurant because I know how hard it can be to make people happy. However, our treatment was that horrible and upsetting. read more

I'm sad to say that Moondog's has gone way down on my list of places to eat in Rockport. My husband & I took some good friends there for dinner anticipating some tastey food. Three of us ordered the special (med-rare prime rib, fried shrimp, baked potato, & salad). Unfortunately, prime rib was NOT served to us. Instead, we got some sort of BBQ shoe leather covered with cheese & bacon. In the past we have had some good food at Moondogs, but not the last couple of trips (not sure what's going on in the kitchen). The service & sides were fine. read more

The appetizers was editable the rest of the food straight up SUCKED!!! We had bad service to top it all off. We spent $150.00 and went home with a stomach ache would not recommend to anyone!! I wrote this review the day after I ate there. My husband had the $20 shrimp skewer plate the shrimp were super small the $5 shrimp skewer at HEB would have been bigger. The biggest problem he had with it is that it was WAY over cooked!! There were four of us and all of our fish was over cooked as well. Just wish we would have stopped at the appetizers. read more

Poor service all around. From our server to the kitchen to management/owner. I've worked in the kitchen. I've worked as a server. I've worked as a bartender. I've worked as a manager of a restaurant. I saw zero teamwork. Inexperienced or poorly trained waitstaff. Our server was nice but looked like she was on the verge of tears the whole time we were there, poor thing. She was the least of our bad experience here (even tho she admittedly forgot to put in our drink order). Anyway, 45 minutes AFTER we put in our food order the server informs me that they are 86 crab cakes... that means out of or sold out. Kitchen shouldve relayed that to front of house workers way before that and the management could've counted those down on their pos system to ensure this doesn't happen. I saw a manager or owner sitting at the bar watching the restaurant sink. Then when the restaurant slowed she did 2 table touches to people she knew but not to anyone else. Management does not watch their crew sink, they fight to stay afloat or go down with them. Poorly managed. Oh, the seafood is frozen. FROZEN! Who serves frozen seafood when the sea is 5 feet away?!?! read more

Read mixed reviews on here, mostly positive. Called over and talked to them. Went and had dinner. Beautiful evening to be sitting at the water's edge, in shade/light breeze. Our small dog accompanied us. Waitress was very nice and attentive. Food and service were good also. Friendly crowd. Some arrived by boat. Many smiled and made casual conversation, Texas style. Overall had a good experience, but there were a couple of quibbles that might make us look for alternatives if we're in the area again. We're a couple with a 3 year old eating with us. I got the Mahi Mahi "Richboy", my wife got the Seared Ahi salad, and my son got the corn dog with fries. Additionally we had two rounds of drinks. We arrived just after 11, so we looked to be about the 4th table seated at the time we ordered. First, the good: Loved the ambiance. The architecture and location were very comfortable and we loved the view and the sea breeze. The food was VERY good. My poorboy ("Richboy" on the menu) was the best I'd ever had, with heavily buttered bun, perfectly seasoned Mahi, excellent sauce, and amazing grilled asparagus as a side. No complaints whatsoever there. My wife's salad was also excellent after it had to go back one time (more on that below), with a nice balance of greens and mandarin sections, a perfectly seasoned and cooked (and quite generous!) portion of Ahi tuna sliced on top, and a vinaigrette that balanced everything very nicely. The corn dog and fries are, of course, pretty hard to mess up so a 3 year old won't like them. :) The bad: The most concerning issue was one of food allergies. When we placed our orders, I made a point to ask that the feta cheese be left off. I told the server this was due to my wife's dairy allergies. When the salad came out it had the feta on it, as well as toast with cheese melted on it on the plate. The server took it right back and quickly brought us a new one without the feta... but with the cheesy toast still on the plate. :( It didn't stop us from enjoying the food, but I think some training should probably be done about emphasizing the communication of food allergies between the servers and kitchen, since some reactions can be incredibly serious. The second concern was the drinks. We started with the Mai Tai and Pina Colada, and thought the chunks of real fruit in the drinks was a very nice touch. They were too sweet for us by far so we didn't repeat that order, but I understand some people like their "boat drinks" that way, so we didn't really think much of that. We followed that with a pair of margaritas, and I couldn't tell you what went wrong there. It almost seemed like the bartender got the glasses mixed up when pouring them, because one of them tasted like syrup and the other tasted like pure alcohol. We ended up mixing them together to something we could actually drink. The server was quite busy by that time, and we'd already sent a meal back once, so we didn't want to hassle with sending drinks back too (don't want to be "that" table). It's a shame, since we would likely have stayed for another round or two if we were getting good drinks just because we enjoyed the atmosphere so much. read more

Nice scenery with great seating on the outside deck which was covered as well, also a nice addition. Service was decent for going at noon on a Saturday, food took a little long but it was fairly busy so that is understandable. We started with the fried calamari which was fried perfectly and served with a sweet chili sauce which was a delicious combination, the only thing I'd have to say is that the portion was small for the price. The main course was cooked well, I had the Southwest tacos my wife had the Mahi Baja tacos which were a little dry but still good (I'd recommend adding a sauce to them or even pickling the onions would add a nice touch.) I would certainly recommend this place for the great scenery and good food, just try to go at a down time as the parking can get pretty tight. read more

MoonDig used to be one of our go to places to eat in Rockport. We've lived in Rockport for over 20 years and have enjoyed MoonDogs atmosphere and the fact that we could take our puppies to the outside area. Our last visit will most likely be our last. The fact that the menu has changed wasn't a big deal and is expected once in a while. It was shocking to see what I consider a big price increase for the food. Some things up to 45% more. My husband has diet restrictions and in the past has ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with Swiss cheese. The waitress said they could accommodate this. When my husbands sandwich came out he got a very small chicken breast wth 2 pieces of toast in each side of the meat with Swiss cheese. When we got the bill he was charged $10.00 for the meat and $1.00 each for the bread. My food was also a smaller portion despite the higher price. We did express our displeasure to the waitstaff for the price increase (and shared that we knew she was in no way responsible). It's my hope that the owners of MoonDog will weigh the income increase against loss of revenue from loyal customers like my husband and I. read more

Went there yesterday July 3rd 2016. Had a party of 10 so the wait to get seated was expected. Service was great and friendly. Hostess recommended going to the bar while we wait. Bloody mary's were delicious and we love coming during July for the themed drinks. Last year was the "Merica" which was fun and delicious. This year was the "Bomb Pop" which was sweet but very very good and they included a small bombpop popsicle to stir the drink with. We had fish tacos on corn tortillas, which are gluten free I might add, and a shrimp poboy, which I liked better than last year because this year was not popcorn shrimp. Others had crab cakes(good), fried shrimp (big and excellent), and sweet potato fries. If you are looking for something good and on the water can't beat this place. Also like that they cook shellfish seperate from other foods. A+ rating from me and will be back again next July. read more

This was my first time visiting Moondog and I had very high expectations. I walked into the restaurant and was very pleased to see the beautiful setting of this place. The waiters were very friendly and took our order in a timely manner. The male waiter was very diligent in refilling the drinks at my table. The horror set in when everyone in my group of 27 had their food except another and myself. We waited and waited and waited (an hour and forty five minutes to be exact). In fact, by the time we got our food, the group had finished their meals (some of which were not even correct). The food we received was not even that great, definitely not worth the wait. When asking about a discount for the meal, we received a "no". The owner refused to grant us any sort of discount because "they still ate the food and were satisfied in the end." Atmosphere was great if you are looking for a mismatched beach joint with an open feel. Draft Beer selection was great and reasonable. We had the fish and shrimp tacos that the waitress recommended. Unfortunately, they were very disappointing and I would not order them again. The kid's menu needs a seafood item since it is a seafood restaurant. Horrible ending to lovely Labor Day weekend. Waited 40+ minutes for cold fish sandwich, cold fries. Bus station is in the dining room. Bus boys clanked plates, threw dirty flatware into the bus tub on the floor, dumped ice. Ear splitting platter clank throughout meal that interrupted each point of the conversation. Manager told me "that's the place we have always had it." Maybe the team can scrape and stack plates in the kitchen and not the dining room? Gratuity added to the bill. We are in the Rockport all the time. So many nice restaurants and great chefs to choose from. This is not one of them. Not going back. Ever. read more

Best views on the coast. We like watching the dolphins in the harbor or having cocktails while the oyster boats are unloading next door, it is like dinner with a show. The fish taco and brisket nachos are excellent, and I love their unique burger buns, and they have great specialty drinks. The new remodel has really added to the dining and cocktail options. A must try if you are in Rockport/Fulton! read more

Excellent! Service was great and wait time was reasonable for Valentines Night. Our meal was very tasty. For starters, the calamari arrived well before the dinner and was cooked perfect, with a spicy ranch and a spicy calamari sauce for dipping. It was a generous portion and we were starving so that was good. I ordered the fried shrimp and grilled fish. The shrimp was fried perfect and the fish had a great seasoned taste. I had asparagus as a side and loved it!!! The atmosphere is great, right on the water - really a lovely view. Our Valentines day was so nice and the dinner added a great end to the evening. read more
