It's so hard to find a neighborhood restaurant that offers quality food in a time when so many hip, insta-friendly restaurants are taking the reins of public attention. I came here before climbing at Dogpatch down the street. I was worried I would feel bloated after eating out, but it was not the case at all. I felt happily full and energized to climb. Everything we got was fresh, generous, and made with quality ingredients. I ordered the una-kyu maki (eel and cucumber) and the scallop-crab-tobiko roll (forgetting the name, sorry!) Highly recommend the second one. When the menu said it contained scallop I didn't realize each piece of the roll would be generously topped with scallop. The una-kyu maki was also tasty, and the pieces were pretty large. My friend ordered the zaru soba, which was definitely worth the upgrade from the normal soba. The tempura was delicious and contained everything from shrimp to mushrooms to sweet potato to purple yam. I also really liked our gyoza appetizer. It was filled with a good balance of meat and cabbage and I like my gyoza on the less-fried side. It was such a wholesome, loving meal. I was also pleasantly surprised to be greeted by the owner, who started Moshi Moshi 31 years ago. Even though, like most sushi restaurants, it was not an inexpensive meal, I'd definitely return. Came here before a warriors game on a Friday night and it was such a great experience! Although it did take a minute for our server to initially come over, everything after that was quick and he was so great. The menu was different than most sushi restaurants so we enjoyed trying a few new things like the tuna katsu and the deep fried calamari and green beans. My husband ordered sides of real wasabi and smoked soy sauce and he loved them. The sushi was fresh, the menu well priced, and the service was excellent. I live in Dogpatch and was really excited to finally try Moshi Moshi. We were able to set a reservation for a Saturday evening. Overall, I felt as if this was a very average experience. I ordered three rolls: sake-nagi (traditional maki roll), spider roll, and the honeymoon roll. I thought the food was decent -- nothing in particular stood out for me. I thought the crab was nicely crisped in the spider roll and the honeymoon was as I expected. Overall, I think that this place delivers a solid meal but nothing spectacular. Oddly - the staff didn't let us hold onto a menu after we ordered our first round of food... being short on menus is understandable, but generally patrons order multiple rounds of food at a sushi restaurant. Additionally, there seemed to be other issues with service including lack of water refills, not bringing a dish for soy sauce, and not bringing a carry out container. Of course, these are minor points that aren't related to the food, but the service ruined the experience for me. I would go back again and give it a second shot. Inside and outside sitting area. A gentleman greeted us as we walked in. I think it was the owner/manager maybe? Seated right away inside facing the bar. There was a loose (broken) wooden piece on the bench where my son was sitting. It was nice and quiet. We ordered Two CA rolls, snow dragon, new moon and Caterpillar roll. TL;DR - Go and stay for the whiskey tastings, but their food could be more consistent. Follow them on social media or website to find out their whiskey flights and tastings. Generally speaking, they already have a fantastic whiskey list, but those tastings that they have once in a while is a great treat. Sometimes representatives come in and talk to you about the selection as well! The Balvenie tasting is still something I think fondly about (if you have a friend who is into whiskey/scotch, this is a great brand to gift too)! Now, for food... I have tried a lot from here because we live close by. I've tried their udon noodles, sushi rolls, sashimi, nigiri, donburi bowls, etc. What I can say is, service varies (a young lady who served us last time didn't bring out my food because she thought I'd received it - except she was our only server that night ????) and food quality also varies. Sometimes it's really good, sometimes, it's taste lukewarm/room temperature. Next time, I think I'll just come for drinks. read more

Just about everything there was fantastic. The menu. The whiskey selection. The ambiance. The service. Totally great. But I gotta say the sushi rice was not on point today was a bit more mushy mushy than moshi moshi...which makes me think to come back later as people are probably ramping back up after a year of pandemic closure. The flavors were great but just that rice was a bit formidable and hard to get over. So I'd come back and try again or get more grilled stuff vs sushi stuff. Manager was super friendly...got us a great table...explained to us all about the Japanese whiskey selection (which is probably the best in the city hands down). Probably closer to a 3.5, but I'm hesitant to give it a 4 because it's a tad pricey for what you get. We tried: Kara-age- solid rendition, though kara-age tends to be decent where ever you go Moshi wings- these were very tasty. The wings are butterflied with solid char on all the wings. Would recommend Grilled Salmon Collar- very simple dish probably by design to let the salmon shine. Rich and tasty. The food was very good, but the apps were $11- $14 each (Classic SF). Food quality vs price vs experience. This is a cute spot and one that I really wanted to love. This is a great date spot due to their outdoor patio. Service was ok. Our bill was $70. This was definitely not worth it in my book. We got a $17 roll, and although it was delicious, it just wasn't $17 delicious. The bento box was ~$22 and had karage chicken + a California roll with real crab meat (loooooove real crab meat). Real Crab California rolls -- I know, pretty Americanized, but I had an amazing version at another restaurant and this was a great chance to try another. These were just ok. For $8 (same price as my favorite), they just didn't match up and were lackluster overall. I wasn't impressed. The chicken karage was decent. Not too oily. Ahi tuna salad ($17) was amazing, pricey, but I would definitely get this again if I came back. read more

Been here twice and both times food is amazing. 90% of coworkers usually katsu bowl, but I went with oyakdo don, which is like a sautéed onion and chicken in a sauce and finished with an egg. This is my local Japanese spot in the Dogpatch. Unfortunately, there is quite a bit left to be desired at Moshi Moshi. I appreciate the owner as he is a super nice guy who seems to really embrace his business. Problem is...the food is disappointing. First of all, I think it's an issue that a sushi bar isn't visually seen. I can't see my sushi being made and you lose out on the interaction. The fish is decent but not something to write home about. They utilize fresh crab in their rolls which is fantastic...but the last 2 times, it has been extremely dry. The cooked food is usually an afterthought. There has gotta be a better way to teriyaki rather than pre cooking food and dumping a heaping amount of sauce on top. I really want to like this neighborhood, corner spot but after visiting more than a handful of times with similar outcomes...I think it's time to move on. A causal spot serving the Mission Bay neighborhood that's severely lacking in Japanese dining options, Moshi Moshi definitely wins on taste. I had a hard time parting with $18.25 for a 2 item bento box, but the saba shio was a generous piece and grilled to perfection. The sashimi is fresh and the delicate flavors come through. As with most bentos, this comes with a small salad and a housemade chicken suimono soup. On another occasion, I enjoyed their deep bowl of Tempura soup with buckwheat soba noodles. The presentation was pretty and even got my own Togarashi spice shaker. Service is friendly, if a bit forgetful. However, you wouldn't mind especially if you sit in their cozy patio in the back. I pointed to the little face in the menu, a caricature of the owner I knew from long ago. "Is he here?" I asked the waiter. He was not, "not usually on Wednesday" I was told. It's easily been twenty years. The owner of this place, Mits, once owned a very large, beautiful Japanese restaurant on Van Ness. At a time when Van Ness restaurants were mostly tourist draws this one, Nikko, had cultivated something unique. Elegant Japanese waitresses, tourists on expense accounts, local band members at the sushi bar, and the cute girls who trailed in their wake. Mits delivered strong pours, often comped, to keep those cute girls in their seats and returning. Many a relationship began here. Some even lasted. Mits lost the restaurant for reasons I never understood. The closing party was infamous. Live bands, drunken musical chairs... Fun times and then it was over. Moshi Moshi opened. It felt nothing like Nikko. It was neither upscale nor a tourist draw nor filled with beautiful Japanese servers in floor length gowns. It was a neighborhood joint before there was a neighborhood here and it says something for the concept, the owner, and his following that it's lasted. Some people have described this as a hipster joint but it's not, really. It was here before the word hipster was invented. Its menu is extensive and its food and price points are perfect for a neighborhood joint, even one which I'd drive out of my way for. On a Wednesday evening the place was busy. There's no fewer than five separate dining areas here (front right, front left, sushi bar, low-lit room, and outdoor patio). Choose carefully: the front right one appears most likely to house children, casual couples, and solo diners. The dimmer lit room feels more special though it strikes me that this isn't really a first date sort of place. The menu is extensive with sushi, Japanese salads, donburi, yakis, grilled items, tempura and much more. It's like they took everything from the menu at Nikko, replicated it here in a casual environment with 1/8th the space, and added a few more things. On this visit I had warm, salty edamame ($4.95) and an Ahi Tuna Salad ($12.95) with creamy Sesame-Miso dressing. He got the Beef Yaki Udon ($15.95) and an Asahi. It was perfect: the food, the price, all of it. By the meal's end I was trying to finagle a way to purchase a loft in the area and make Moshi Moshi my everyday restaurant. I'm a fan of Mike D, not only is he the yelp talk legend that he just is, he's also a really great friend. I needed a night out, he had the plans and we decided on Sushi Sushi at Moshi Moshi before a show in Potrero Hill. I had not been in almost 10 years and that was before I was into sushi. Now, I'm crazy about it and was looking forward to going back. We started with cocktails, they have a full bar and a sweet collection of booze. He ordered the Rye cocktail that I had my eye on, so I ordered the Honey Cognac Cocktail. This drink was just too good for a sipper, but it is. I had my sipper, my water, my miso and then we ordered a beer. We like our beverages and more. Lol. The owner was really nice and came over to greet us, it's nice to see really nice small business owners taking time to see if the customer is satisfied. We ordered the Tempura Fried Stuffed Jalapeno Popper (Roll). I typically never order tempura, but the jalapeno popper version was great. Then we ordered a few items including the Lobster Roll (great), Salmon Sashimi (fantastical), a crispy fried spicy tuna (prefer my tuna uncooked, but good) and a couple other rolls. For dessert, we swaggered over to the bar where we ordered a shot of Four Roses Single Barrel and a Remy Martin VSOP FTW. These were really nice and we enjoyed talking booze with the bartender. Great night out and re-introduction to Moshi Moshi. I think I need to dig up my restaurant.com gift certificate I purchased months ago and go again soon. Many years ago I used to try to write poetry and then I'd come to Moshi Moshi on Monday night for open mic night. There were others who would bring their guitar and sing, some would do a little acting, some would read their poetry. Also the owner, a Japanese man, short in stature, a friendly guy with a good sense of humor. He usually will walk up to each table and say hello. Nice mix of a staff, decent service though it could improve in attentiveness. From my past experiences eating here, I don't remember the food being memorable. But this time around, my order turned out to be worth remembering. Here's what we ordered: Miso Soup in a cup JET BUNNY mango, cucumber roll toped w/ spicy bay scallops $7 CATERPILLAR una kyu roll topped w/ avocado & tobiko $10 RAINBOW SPIDER spider roll topped w/ assorted sashimi & tobiko $16- My favorite roll we ordered. It's a huge roll with a nice variety of flavors. DYNASTY of LOVE shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, cream cheese, avocado, $15 cucumber wrapped in soy paper & topped with scallion, tobiko, kewpi, chili & unagi sauce-- This is Moshi Moshi's flagship roll which is rich and delicious. I could see why it's called Dynasty of Love with the pink soy paper wrap. HAMACHI KAMA grilled hamachi collar $10- they grill the Kama here and serve it with salad. It's decent. Unfortunately open mic is no longer around just like my poetry writing. Some reason I found eating and writing about it way more interesting... Discovered this spot recently, and I'm a fan! I'm vegetarian and sometimes it sucks when all you can get is a cucumber or avocado roll, so I really do like how Moshi Moshi has a pretty large selection of vegetarian rolls. I like them all except the one with the plum leaf - it was too sour for me. My husband isn't vegetarian though and his go to's are the spicy tuna and the haleakala. Last time I ordered takeout, they recommended the grilled asparagus for an appetizer and it was so flavorful. Highly recommend that and the shishito peppers! I haven't dined there yet, but their back patio section looks very cute! One thing I don't like is that when I get takeout they mix my veggie sushi with non-veggie sushi... Like I don't eat meat and don't really want my food touching meat either. I've requested they not do that, and it's been a hit or miss. But overall great food - we get food from here once a week and it's super worth it! Highly recommend! read more
