I am an Indian and the cuisine I have eaten the most is indian at home and otherwise. This is only partly indian food. This rating is for their buffet. The aloo parathas on the other hand was slightly better, so I would give those 4*. The place is reasonable for someone looking for indian food in this area. But if you have a choice, consider trying a different cuisine. Have any other indian food in a city other than this will be a better experience of indian food. read more

If you want excellent Indian food this is the place for you. If you want mediocre service, this coincidentally, is also the place for you. I had the Punjabi Naan to start and for my entree I had Chicken Curry. I could go to this place for the naan alone, but the curry is also fantastic. Everything tastes fresh and is well cooked, but again the service is lackluster at best. The waitress talks so low you have to ask her to repeat herself, and she sort of just grows the silverware and food on the table. Never asks if there is anything else she can get you, never refills the drinks, and she sort of sits in the corner and stares at you. In the end the food is so good I'll deal with the shit service. read more

Great place to eat, the staff are so nice and very friendly, have eaten there with friends who are regulars and by ourselves, and we were treated the same either way, always a great experience. I have a friend who is Indian, and this restaurant's offerings are almost as good as her home cooking, which to me says a lot about the quality of ingredients and the care taken in cooking. I absolutely adore this place! I was really hesitant about trying a new restaurant for a few reasons but having some severe allergies to certain foods is really the main reason. Also, I had NEVER had Indian food before, but the curiosity was killing me. So my best friend and I found our way in one evening. It wasn't full up and we were soon looking over the menu. Our waitress was wonderful and when we told her we had never had this type of food before, she literally went behind the counter and brought out the owner, a lovely Indian woman. She asked about our interests and about things we don't like. I explained my allergies and that I enjoyed a variety of meats as well as heat. She let us pick a heat level and didn't try to push us into ordering anything. She even explained to us that she wanted us to enjoy her food because she doesn't like when guests guess at what they'd like and leave disappointed. She wants every guest to enjoy their food, and especially that she wants people to not be afraid to try new cuisines. It was absolutely delicious! And absolutely affordable. I was made to feel safe about its preparation and it was wonderful that there wasn't a language barrier, which I feared from previous experiences with other ethnic cuisines. Please, if you are reading this and considering whether to venture out and try Indian food for the first time, DO IT. This restaurant is so wonderful and driving on Lisbon street is worth it. Also I hear they have an amazing buffet! In an area where we have so many chinese restaurants, I say that maybe you should try Indian tonight instead. read more

We like this place. It's unassuming and unpretentious. It caters significantly to a college and young professional crowd. The service is usually good and reasonably attentive. The food has remained very good, perhaps a notch or two above average. More recently, servings appeared to be slightly smaller, but still a good value. Can I just say I want to eat here every day? I'm trying to keep it to once a week for now but it is so delicious! My go to is the nav rattan korma on the dinner menu. I'm not a vegetarian but I enjoy vegetarian dishes. My partner has tried the chicken biyrani and loved that too. The naan is also always warm and soft. All around excellent place. Mother India is a must. It has everything I'm looking for: clean and comfortable atmosphere, friendly and knowledgable staff, huge variety in menu and amazing food. The owner, the most kind woman on earth, is happy to give suggestions and talk about her restaurant. They make everything there. They have homemade cheese that is a game changer. The chutney they put in the table is so fresh and delicious, I literally salivate thinking about it. As a vegetarian who typically dines with meat-lovers, this menu is perfect for ALL. They are so accommodating. The Indian chai tea is so comforting, it makes me want to sink into the chair and stay forever. Even the dishes the food is served on are gorgeous. Maybe there are some specific dishes that these guys are good at making Or maybe it's hard to find an 'Ok' Indian restaurant in this region and that's probably why they have a good rating on yelp. My rating is completely on the food because we didn't dine there so this rating doesn't say anything about the ambience, service or location. 1. House Special Biryani: This should never be called biryani, the term 'Biryani' is abused by a lot of restaurants. Am a person who eats rice only if it's Biryani and I've cooked a lot of times because there are very few restaurants in US that make it good. I've had various versions of Biryani (Kashmiri, Mughalai, Hyderabadi..) and of course Hyderabadi is the best. This compares to nothing I've ever tried, the second worst Biryani I've tasted in my life. I was so disappointed that this is their 'Special' Biryani, if they called this 'Bisi Bele Bath' with veggies and meat then it would've been fine. The chicken tasted like it was taken from left over 'Tandoori Chicken' pieces, cut into pieces and mixed in the rice. And there was cauliflower and other mix veggies, no Indian Biryani has cauliflower. "Please don't call this biryani, call it Bisi Bele Bath." 2. Navratan Korma: This was an 'OK' dish and not sure why this is a popular item here. 3. Lamb Biryani: Of course this is not a biryani and the lamb was so hard and distasteful. It's basically the same as House Special but only lamb instead of other meats. Final Note: - If you like Hyderabadi Biryani then this will be the worst Biryani you will have. - If you want good Indian food go to a major city (maybe Boston). read more

As an avid traveler, definitely did not expect such good Indian food from Lewiston, ME. However, this was terrific! This is the only place I have found in the U.S. (so far) that has masala tea that tastes and possibly is identical to authentic Nepali Chiya (milk tea from Nepal). Delicious and sweet - try it if you never have. Nav Rattan Korma and Shahi Paneer are delicious. The paneer here tastes more homemade and is generally a bit softer than most paneer. Not spicy but great flavors! Enjoyed plain naan too (note: naan was coated in oil so if you don't want that, let them know) - pretty good but I hear the garlic naan is better. The rice was also delicious and came free with our meal. Delicious. CERTAINLY intend on returning. read more

Came into the town of Auburn with my boyfriend when he had Police training in the area. Wanted to find a place close to the hotel we were staying at while he was in classes. Found this India place. I had the lunch buffet 2 days in a row (Wednesday & Thursday). Very different experiences. Tuesday I had lunch buffet and mango lassi. Food was full/abundant at buffet station and service was professional. The bill came to 12.95. I left a $10 tip. Came the next day, Wednesday. Got the lunch buffet and mango lassi. One of the servers hesitated to have me sit and eat verses take out because they were so busy, but then told me where to sit. The food at buffet station was running very low and they were almost out of a few things. (The buffet is very small, so this is big deal when you're hungry lol). My bill came to 18.95. What? Very curious why I got charged completely differently for the same lunch buffet and mango lassi I had the day before. Still left a $5 tip but what a difference in experience from the day before. The server boy basically threw the calculator in my face when he told me the bill amount, so not the same professionalism I got the day before. I guess they don't like courteous tippers Didn't argue about the bill because I'm heading back to the Boston area tomorrow and don't need to argue about pocket change when I won't ever be at this place again. 2 stars because the food was decent. read more

I've only been here once but it was really good. We asked them about vegan options and they were able to help us choose some food. Additionally, when I got there to pick up my food, she let me know some of the chutneys are not vegan. Worst indian food ever. I ordered a takeout on July 4 2019 from this restaurant. My order was dal makhani, paneer karahi, butter chicken. All the dishes were awful and they gave us yellow dal in a yellow makhani gravy instead of makhani dal which was a shock. I am not sure who is the chef but I seriously doubt any of the positive reviews are legit or from people who know what Indian food tastes like. My rating should be 5 stars based on the food alone, but I have to deduct based on an experience that I recently had with this establishment. In the late spring, my fiancé and I (along with a mutual friend) visited Mother India for lunch. The food was top notch per usual - I had ordered my favorite keema mutter (spicy) with garlic naan bread. Shortly after, I received a friend request from our waiter, whom I'm fairly certain is the owner's son. He was friendly enough, but a few days into our new Facebook friendship, he began trying to hard sell me on some sort of multilevel marketing vitamin scheme. As time went on, I started to feel more and more uncomfortable and I stopped going to the restaurant, which is upsetting as it's the only place to get Indian food in town. I also started to wonder how the waiter got my name in the first place - I can only speculate, but the whole situation felt like a huge invasion of privacy. I ended up blocking him on social media and haven't returned for food since. If you do choose to go, I'd suggest paying with cash instead of a card and skipping the FB check in or review. read more

If you're craving excellent authentic Indian, this is the place. Better than any in Portland. Naan is fresh and hot with chutneys. Samosas are spiced and delicious. Masala dishes are hearty and rich. Date of vist: April 12, 2009 I say this as a fan of, and regular at, Shere Punjab in Brunswick (same owner), the food I got today, at Mother India, was probably the blandest, most disappointing Indian food I've had (even more disappointing than that of the Bangor place). My dining partner is in agreement: "bland bland bland"..."would rather drive to Brunswick in a snow storm" Everything (chutneys, samosas, breads, raita, entrees: nav rattan korma, saag paneer) was a fail. Maybe the people who know what they are doing took off for the day, but we'll be sticking with SP and Haggarty's and home-cooked. read more

The staff is great, the food is tasty and OMG the dipping sauces are wonderful. I love Indian food and I will say that I'm the only person I personally know who doesn't like this place, so take these bad reviews with a grain of salt. Every time I order chicken dishes here, which I normally love, they have contained really poor quality chicken with watery sauces. Often they are spicy dishes that have let me down in that department. But, like I said, I know a lot of people who love this place. read more
