Moulin has been one of my favorite French food places for years. Every store I've visited in SoCal has always provided consistently great service and served excellent food. We stopped by the Laguna Beach location earlier this evening and we were not disappointed. We had a coffee eclair, almond croissant and some tropical dessert called Exotic- everything was delicious. Cute spot in Laguna! I have been to the Newport beach one once, and this was my second time at a Moulin so I decided to try this place for dessert. I got a glace with vanilla ice cream and poached pear. I would say the poached pear was a bit sweet for my taste, but the atmosphere and vibe here is lovely. There are tons of French people here and it really does make you feel like you are in a French cafe. Only complaint is that I wish they had more fresh pastries to order, as when i arrived there was a very limited amount on display. I'd be down to come here again for a crepe or breakfast. read more

Beautiful cafe location a block away from the water! Forest is always really busy during the weekend but we were incredibly lucky this particular Sunday. Street parking right in front of the cafe & no lines! We ordered a variety of different drinks. Iced tea, Hot Mocha, Latte. The only thing that seemed interesting was the fact that they didn't serve iced coffees! We were looking forward to picking up something cold given that it was 100 degrees outside! The ambiance of the spot was super cool. Very chill vibe with public WiFi for those who choose to sit and relax. Like I said, it was a one off that there was no line when we arrived! Whenever I'm visiting my dad in Laguna, I always come downtown early in the morning to grab a coffee at Moulin and walk on the boardwalk. Moulin is open early enough (7am) to grab a free parking spot on Forest. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, but at that early hour, you have enough time to grab a hot drink, walk to Heisler Park, and return to your car before you ever have to worry about feeding the meter. Moulin's decor probably out-Frenches any French bistro I've actually seen in France, and they deliver on substance with their coffee and pastry. I'm proud of myself every time I am successfully able to resist the stunning pastry in their display case -- which include croissants and eclairs as well as more elaborate creations like mille feuilles -- and I'm even happier when I take one (or three) home. I do find it curious that in a city where the average summer high temperatures hover around 80 degrees, they don't offer iced coffees, but c'est la vie. As Marie Antoinette said, "Let them drink champagne, Perrier, 1664, and Orangina." I've never been to Moulin past 11 in the morning, and even at that hour it's already full of wannabe Parisian beach bums. I'll happily stick with my pre-sunrise mocha. read more

We went to try the Moulin in Laguna. The location/ambience was nice-- close to Main Beach. The food was just ok in my opinion. We had the cappuccino and almond croissant. I first went to Moulin Newport Beach in December. I was in California for a couple of weeks and was looking for a place where I could get a typical French petit-déjeuner. À ma grande surprise, it was real French breakfast ! With dreamy croissants and pain au chocolat. Tartelette au citron meringuée. Best éclair au chocolat. And most of all their to die for chouquette. Love that you can speak French there. And even enjoy some French Bistro cuisine like : Poulet rôti, ratatouille, lentilles, croque-monsieur, carottes râpées... They use real eggs in their omelette. This little French breakfast/ brunch spot in Laguna was so cute and good, I honestly felt like I was sitting outside a cafe in France! I ordered a Nutella crepe and Vegetarian Omellette which came with the most amazing bread and jam spread. We wanted to do away some of the bigger sit-in restaurants in the area. So we came upon the French bakery/cafe in Moulin for breakfast time. We ordered the "Chicken Pesto Sandwich" ($8). This is one of the cold sandwiches you see on their counter. The baguette that houses everything has a crisp crust, along with that the doughy bread. The pesto sauce was evident. Also, the chicken is tender but there was less pieces. This sandwich tasted fresh but fell short due to the quantity of meats. "Tabouleh Couscous Salad" ($8). This was neatly packed in a container. If you're in for an easy healthy ready to go Mediterranean meal this is it, it's light and fluffy. "Omelette Paysanne" ($12). This was the only made to order meal and I was happy with it because the scrambled eggs were thick, fluffy and moist. The potatoes were well cooked and adds savory in it. Included is a slice of banquette bread and jam. They offer crepes, coffee and wines as well. The staff here are friendly and they made the effort to clean and clear out tables when it got busy. There's a heated outdoor patio on cold mornings. It's a nice little spot to start your day in this beach town. read more

Great place for breakfast when you are in Laguna Beach. Hubby always has one of the breakfast items and a croissant with coffee. I get their roast chicken since I'm not big on breakfast. My favorite moulin location. You don't have to call a few days in advance just to get mousse cakes lol, for some reason the others do. The most delicious mousse cake I've ever had so far. Very light and not too sweet. The acidity balances out with the sweetness of the cake which is perfect. Definitely worth a try. read more

Moulin took over the vacated spot where the Swedish bakery and light lunches were sold for many years. Moulin is more French style with sandwiches made ready to go. They carry higher quality than a grocery store and are like a boutique of food and drinks. They also have a 2 page menu,fancy desserts, breads, salads, wine, champagne a variety of drinks and gourmet packaged and canned goods for sale. The atmosphere is airy, bright and more bistro style. Overall I think most of the food would definitely be in a 3 to more likely a 4-5 star rating. When I first walked in I was a little overwhelmed because everything looked so good. A quick decision had to be made because it was around lunch hour and people were behind me. So I got one of their pre-made sammies made on what looked like their wonderful scratch made European style rolls. I sat down to eat and I was very hungry. Sadly my hard crust European roll on my pre-made sammie was kept cold so not to spoil but the bread was very hard and dense to bite into. Sadly the pre-made sammies look like a good idea to sell to the busy lunch crowd but in reality we're very hard to eat and chew. If they would have gotten the fresh buns out of the oven or not refrigerated them and then added the deli meats, cheese, wild green or herbs, etc. the sammie would of had that wonderful fresh crusty warm bread with the soft interior. Instead I was fighting to rip off each cold bite of the harden bread!!! So sadly the pre-made sammies refrigerated were a very bad idea for the consumer. Actually this is the first place with pre-made house made crusty bread and deli meat I've ever been to. Most places that refrigerate their deli sandwiches use a much softer bread to avoid near rock hard bread. Too bad someone had this idea because it totally ruined my sammie and the probably delicious bread could not be appreciated that hard from the refrigeration. I would go back but never order a pre-made refrigerated sammie. There are so many other potentially delicious looking items to order. Parking is pay out front. Be careful to park your car between the white lines and don't let the front end of your vehicle go over the sidewalk. Tickets are given for the slightest infraction! There is also pay parking behind the stores and restaurants on Forest Ave. I believe after 6:00pm parking is free. Just read your meter because they vary. Instead of serving very hard to eat bread, keep the bread on the metal racks protected with plastic and the food that needs to be refrigerated set up like a regular sandwich deli (where the cold sammies are instead). These workers are quick. They could make a totally fresh sandwich in a minute. read more

This is my third time going to Moulin and so far they have not disappointed me. The regular coffee is perfect for my taste--not too bitter and fresh, the almond croissant is exactly like one of the best of its kind that I use to get in France when I was living there; the cakes are wonderful little delicacies well worth their price. I am French and this place gives me back a tiny slice of my culture. In France, buying Sunday pastries was a tradition in my family. Thanks to Moulin, I can indulge in that tiny pleasure again. If I lived in Laguna Beach, this would be my go to early morning spot. The ambience is very nice. There's a good selection of French pastry. It's located just about a block from the beach. And the only reason for a one-star reduction from perfect is my favorite French pastry, the Canale, wasn't what I expected. Maybe it just threw me off. It was still good though. LOVE! I was so excited to visit this Laguna Beach location after hearing that they are expanding to San Clemente soon. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in I was greeted by both the female and male host/cashier. They were helpful in deciding what to order for breakfast. I decided to have the croque madame, small orange juice and a café Au lait. The female cashier confirmed if I wanted the small and showed me the size which was perfect. All of the items in the refrigerator case looked fresh. I also ordered a baguette and a ham sandwich to go. All of the items that I was served to my table were fantastic. Really a taste of France. My husband & I came in here while walking down the street on a cold, wet afternoon a couple of days ago & I loved it. It's authentic French cuisine & bakery. Just standing in line looking at everything they sell waiting to order made me order way more than I intended. My husband had Le Croque Madame which looked AMAZING & came with a salad. The egg on top was sunny side up & looked incredibly perfect. Their food looks just as beautiful as on their menu. I saw a man eating a French onion soup, & had to order it & which tasted very good. Perfect for a cold afternoon. I also ordered a cold ham & cheese sandwich w/ butter lettuce (I think) on a buttered baguette, an almond croissant, a pear & almond tart, & what looked like a small rum Bundt cake (I don't remember it's name) but it had a faint perfume-y taste. My husband completely finished the croque madame & could not stop eating the almond croissant. I had part of my sandwich yesterday & today & it's still absolutely tasty & fresh. Pear tart was good too, but maybe not my thing. We HAD to go back this morning on our way home & picked up 4 almond croissants, 2 chocolate croissants, 2 small croissants, 2 Madelines, 1 pain au raisins, 2 packaged Nutella biscuits, 2 tins of French "mints", 1 Americano, & 1 café au Lait. Everything was fresh & delicious. I would highly recommend this place & will definitely return. BUT as a warning to absent minded people like me, please, please, please beware of the coffees' temperature. I accidentally took a sip of my husband's Americano & got the worst tongue burning in my life. It can do serious damage. I have learned my lesson & will pay better attention, but for the sake of the bakery I hope they will serve them at a temperature we're they won't get sued. lovely ambience, and by appearances, a fabulous selection of items! The chef was lovely and helpful when he popped out for something else. And the staff somewhat helpful, tho not so excited to be helpful or generous ‍. As it was a somewhat chilly day, I came in hoping for a London fog tea latte. that not being an option (all good) I opted for a regular cup of tea. Sadly it was quite weak/diluted. I'd ordered the large size cup and when I'd asked for a second bag of tea and was going to be charged the full price ($4+) of another cup of tea. obviously a first world problem and not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Just a bit of a bummer (being a day off) Hoping for a nice fancy cup of tea and basically had a large cup weak diluted tea :-/. As a solution, would be awesome to offer 2 tea bags when selling the larger size, as many tea/coffee shops do! (Btw this may be only 1 of 2 or 3 reviews I've ever felt inclined to make. Moulin is exactly what I imagine a bistro in France is like. The atmosphere is vintage-esque, transporting you to a different era. The workers communicate in French, even when greeting patrons. And of course, the food is great, ranging from pastries to popular breakfast items. I got the Le Croque Monsieur, a grilled ham and cheese sandwich served with salad. But it's more than just a regular ham and cheese sandwich. Quality and authenticity are important to them, and it shows. The Monsieur is something so simple, yet so good. It's also calorific, so I thank them for including some greens on the side. The omelet was great as well, especially with a serving of fresh fruits. Some of the melons weren't fully ripe, but I think it was out of season. My mother thought the crepe was fine. She was expecting a little more on the inside, but no complaints on taste. We had a great brunch experience, and would love to come back again when we're in the area. read more
