Was in town for my brothers graduation and my brother decided to take the family to his favorite steak house. I can see why he loves it so much. The price for everything was great for the quality of the meats and large selection of cuts. I went with a 20 ounce medium rare prime rib with a baked potato and some French beans. The sides weren't great but still tasty. The prime rib was delicious and tender. I was blown away by the price of it too, 20$ for a delicious pound and a quarter steak! The appetizer sampler though wasn't up to par with the rest of the food, and plating. In the sampler, my favorite would have to be the potato skins. The crab stuffed mushrooms were a little on the salty side and couldn't taste much crab. The shrimp tasted good but being placed in a simple hot sauce didn't make it anything special. Their salads weren't great but they weren't bad either. The table-side customizable salad was visually interesting, but it feels outdated and out of place in 2018. The complimentary bread they give you taste like complimentary bread. I enjoyed the complimentary bread a lot but it tasted something I make at home all the time. Their steaks and main courses are obviously their strongest attribute and what I would come back for. The service and ambiance was great the food was great and for the price it was totally worth it. We ordered a lot of food and the bill came close to 160$, after tax and tip. I live in LA and I didn't know going to a steak house could be so affordable. WOW. These folks know how to cook steaks. Consistently on point. Quality meat, properly seasoned, served at the temperature you ordered. This is not the case at some other local establishments, so take note. This is where you can get steak done right. The atmosphere is welcoming, with lots of seating and fireplaces you can cozy up to on a cold night. Decor is dated, mauve and green with a hunting theme, but this is not a major issue for us. The wine list is adequate with appropriate emphasis on cabernet sauvignon, with single offerings of malbec, zinfandel, and other varietals to round out the options a bit. The cocktail list runs sweet for my taste, and there are a half dozen or so beers on tap to suit your needs in that area. The steak is the star, but in true midwest fashion, it comes with a ton of other food. A highlight for us was the loaf of freshly baked brown bread brought to the table to start. You also get soup or salad; we both opted for the table-side salad bar, where you build your own from a tray of options and get exactly what you want. The housemade whipped red wine vinaigrette was delicious. You also get two sides with your steak - we each ordered potatoes (mine baked, his garlic-mashed) and the vegetable of the day, which was grilled asparagus. Delicious, but who has room? He ordered the New York strip, and I had the filet mignon. They were both cooked exactly as we ordered them and they were perfection. The filet had that velvety texture, and the strip had excellent flavor. We did not attempt dessert, as we were stuffed. We made steak & eggs the next morning with the leftovers we took home. One might think it is hard to find good food in West Lafayette, In. I am one of those. Mountain Jack's was pretty good for the standards in the area. Prices were not too shabby, food was good, parking was awful, and service was just okay. Many food options however, this place can get pretty busy! Suspicious of a chainy look, but encouraged by reviews, we checked out Mountain Jack in the way from Chicago. Freshly spoiled by Chicago restaurants, did not have spectacular expectations, but we were impressed by very solid fresh food and quality of service. The table-side salad bar looks like a giant artist's palette with lettuce in the middle and the choices of trimmings around it (cucumber slices, tomatoes, red cabbage, croutons, mushrooms, cheese, etc). The server makes your salad based on your selections at the table. The house-cut prime rib (1.25 lb) will probably last me 3 meals and is a both delicious and a good value. Wild rice pilaf had very few grains of wild rice sprinkled through its white cousin, but the green beans were impressively not over-cooked. Maybe next time we will pace ourselves better and leave room for the tempting-looking carrot cake. read more

I love this place. It is a local favorite and great for group events. We use this location for business dinners with customers and retirement dinners for work because of their separate rooms. It is also great for special events--my brother's graduation dinner was held here as well as several celebratory dinners for my husband & I through the years. I enjoy their table side salad bar, because the wait staff will build your salad as you would like. It's a neat addition and they often leave the extras at the table should you want to add more later. Their website shows a picture of this as well. You can eat well and not destroy your bank account. My husband and I will usually get an appetizer and entrees and walk out of there for less than $60. For a nice, intimate setting I feel this a great deal. I normally get the salmon mentioned on the specialty menu and my husband will get steak. Their side options are yummy (especially the mushrooms) and they offer various sauces/toppings for a small up charge. The host extremely well for large groups and are attentive to a table of two. I didn't get any pics because I was too busy enjoying my daughter's birthday and the amazing food at Mountain Jacks's! We started with a bottle of wine and a sampler platter. We loved everything on the sample platter but especially the sauce the shrimp were in. It was like a spicy kind of buffalo sauce but not buffalo sauce. I can't describe it but it was sooo good!!! We all got the table salad not only was it yummy it was actually pretty fun having it made at the table. My daughter doesn't eat red meat so she got the Barramundi fish. I tried it. It had great flavor with a very soft texture. My husband got the porterhouse steak and he said it was the best he's ever had. He eats his med rare so, I didn't try it but he definitely doesn't say something is the best if it's not. I got the ribeye. It was tender with amazing flavor and a nice crisp outside. Loved it! I almost don't have words for their delicious homemade bread. I believe it may be a sour dough. Oh my, this could be dangerous for me if we lived closer! I've only eaten at two restaurants in Lafayette. One was East End Grill and now Mountain Jack's. I liked East End Grill...especially their truffle fries but there's no comparison to Mountain Jack's. I've heard nothing but great things about Mountain Jacks. My husband and I just moved to the area so we're excited to find a "go-to" resto. Unfortunately, we didn't exactly get the service we had anticipated. After ordering our bottle of wine we barely had any visits from our waitress. In fact, after she took our appetizer order, we were even rather upset that the waiter tending the table beside us was so attentive and outgoing with his patrons! Where he had explained the specials and visited often, our waitress didn't really care for our table. She then took our app dishes, forgot about our utensils and left us alone for the duration with no proper utensils. 20 minutes later my husband just asked for the check and we promptly walked out. We had a 5 star treatment at an Irish pub 4 miles away earlier that afternoon and then paid twice as much for dinner at Mountain Jack's to get this awful service. We had a great time over thanksgiving lunch at Mountain Jack's. All 3 of us had the Turkey dinner. I typically eat only white meat Turkey but tried the dark meat on my plate just because of the raves by my husband and he was right. If all dark meat Turkey was this delicious I would eat it all the time. The other sides were so fresh and delicious. We also had the salad prepared table side which was a nice presentation and also very good. Lastly the service was amazing. We come to Lafayette from Dallas every so often to visit family. In the past, we always had dinner at Hour Time but that restaurant is now closed. We drove by Mountain Jacks each visit and family often told us that it was the best steakhouse in Lafayette. We decided to try it out this time with mixed results. Despite what we read in other reviews, parking was ample and the hostess was very friendly. We made a reservation in advance but it probably wasn't necessary. We started with wine for me and a Yuengling for my husband. He was so excited they had it on tap! It's his favorite beer but unfortunately not available in Texas. The stuffed mushrooms appetizer was nice and the highlight of my meal. We both opted for the tableside salad bar and it was pretty cool. We chose our dressings beforehand and they were brought out with the mobile salad bar which resembles a color wheel. There were lots of choices and we both ended up with large portions of side salad. Nothing special taste-wise, but a neat concept overall. I probably could have stopped here because I was so full, but we forged ahead with our entrees. I had the 7oz cut filet with the whiskey peppercorn sauce. The sauce upcharge wasn't worth it. I was hoping that the whiskey would add a nice flavor but I couldn't taste it. It was more like a bland gravy with peppercorns. My filet was cooked perfectly and the green beans were very good. I also chose potatoes au gratin but never tried it as I was too full. I added on three scampi shrimp to my plate and they were ok too. My husband opted for the prime rib and it was delicious. It came with au jus and a horseradish sauce. He also had the mashed potatoes and broccoli. I stole all of his broccoli, but otherwise I had a ton of leftovers. Overall, the food was just ok. read more

Then we waited about 20 minutes for our table. I overheard her saying to another host - Why does that woman keep looking at me. Celebrated my 21st birthday here with a group of my close friends. The waitress knew what she was doing and was very helpful. Mountain Jack's has some of the best steaks I've eaten and I was very pleased to choose this restaurant. They gave me a private room for my party even though there were only 8 of us. The atmosphere was outstanding. I would strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone who's looking for a chill evening with family, friends, significant other or in a mood for a delicious and memorable dining experience. The only minor complaint I have is that when I visited it the second time it took forever for us to be seated, even though we had a reservation. Promptly seated at the bar... greeted immediately, drinks came just as fast. The stuffed mushroom and the coconut shrimp apps were huge and very flavorful. Next was the mushroom soup- thick, creamy, perfectly seasoned. Ribeye with sauteed mushrooms, baked potato and fresh green beans could not have been better! We didn't get desert because we were full, bit the selection was gorgeous! I felt the meals were priced accordingly, they aren't cheap but you won't have to sell a kidney either to eat here. We go here 3x a year when visiting our Boiler. We were there just a couple weeks ago, and Anthony took great care of us. We asked our son if he's like to try something new on our last trip down there. He said, "the food and service are always good, why would we go anywhere else?". Actually, I rate this 1.5 but it is not an option. First experience was three hostesses staring at you blankly when you ask for coat check. General Manager was also there but only stared at us also blankly. It was uncomfortable and uninviting. This was for my birthday so I was using the membership club coupon. This was definitely not well received by our waiter, Kevin, as was the fact my friend, was made to feel like a pariah because she did not want a drink other than water. The service, I only saw our waiter, Kevin, give, was horrible, incomplete and a poor excuse for a restaurant of this style. It was border line disrespectful! There were other wait staff and runners that were very kind, inviting and an asset to this establishment. This waiter was not it. Mountain Jacks is probably my favorite restaurant in the Lafayette/West Lafayette area. I've been here several times throughout my time at Purdue and the food and service has been consistently good. You have the option of either a cesar salad or to make your own. If you choose to make your own they come over with a large tray with all different salad toppings that you can pick. Their dressings are home made and delicious. Their calamari is delicious and not too heavy. I have had their lobster and salmon and both are really good. Their prime rib is supposed to be really good too, I've never had it but other people I go with always get it. Lastly, their deserts are the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. They always have their signature dessert which is a really large portion of a mud pie. I've had their creme brulee too which is creamy and delicious. Their food is fine dining quality without the price tag and you don't have to dress up in your best to fit in. It has a very homey feeling to it which I enjoy. read more

Mountain Jacks had a few locations around Indy, so when we decided to take my mom to Lafayette for her birthday, we were thrilled to see one still existed! We were promptly seated in the quiet dining room. Decor needs a little updating (old mauve wallpaper and duck photos everywhere), but that doesn't distract from the fabulous food! I got the Chicken Kiev Linguine, which was cooked perfectly, creamy, and wonderfully flavored with red peppers and asparagus. The broccoli, which might seem silly to rave about, was delicious and perfectly cooked (you'd be surprised how hard it is to find someone who cooks it perfectly). I ordered it with the au gratin potatoes which were layered and then covered in cheese and flavored with rosemary. The salad alone is worth going for, though. The server comes to your table with a giant tray and a big lazy Susan full of cups of ingredients (cabbage, carrots, banana peppers, cheese, croutons, sunflower seeds, cucumber, etc.) and you tell them which ingredients you want them to put on your salad. No more salad buffet loaded with germs! My mom ordered the tempura shrimp, which was perfectly cooked. Tempura batter was much too thick, but still tasted great. She ordered it with wild rice pilaf and onion strings. My partner ordered a perfectly seared and seasoned strip streak that came out the perfect temperature and was likely the juiciest steak we'd had in a while. Once the dinner was over, the servers come to your table with a plate of deserts to see what is on the menu. The owner of the restaurant, a surprising delight, came by the table and checked to see how our meal was and talked to us about the previous two restaurants in Indy. Great experience. I can't really rate this place as a steakhouse, since neither of us had steak, but it's certainly a good restaurant with prices that are pretty reasonable given the large quantity of food you receive. I had the baked walleye ($20). The fish was a little overcooked, but the breadcrumb lemon butter topping was excellent, and I really enjoyed the sides I chose (crispy onion strings and potatoes au gratin). My husband had the chicken kiev linguine ($18). It was good but not as good as my entree. It also wasn't what I would call chicken kiev, which is a chicken roll stuffed with herb butter. This was just a breaded piece of chicken, but it was still pretty good. The sauce the linguine was in was a bit watery. In addition to two sides of your choice, the entrees come with a soup or salad, plus bread. I didn't think much of the Caesar salad. I also had a chocolate mousse cake for dessert (I can never resist dessert at places that have a dessert tray as opposed to a dessert menu!) and it was pretty good, but a little too sweet. I would definitely come back to try other things, especially the prime rib. Reservations are a must, at least on weekends. It was absolutely packed. The food does take quite a while to come out. We had two courses plus the free salad, but we were in the restaurant for more than an hour and a half. Part of that was waiting about 10 minutes to be seated (slightly annoying since we had a reservation), but most of that was waiting for our entrees to come out. Also the restaurant is FREEZING. The 3 D's--dark, dank and dirty. Had I used the restroom first I would not have asked for a table. This is supposed to be a nice steakhouse? Then clean your carpets, and paint your walls, they are filthy. Now as for the service--well, it wasn't horrible. Butt it wasn't friendly either. The food? Get a new chef because the owner is paying for a really bad one. Let's start with the appetizers--they tasted like they came out of a box in the freezer section. The salad was over dressed and tasteless. There was a rotten spot on my baked potato. The prime rib was sliced very thin and the veggies over cooked. It's sad really because a little town like Lafayette could clean up with a good restaurant and decent chef.
