Soooo very angry. According to google maps, the Mountain Lyon is 96 miles from my house, which, on the morning of my visit, was almost enough to cause an apoplexy. You see, in an attempt to keep myself from looking like a water buffalo, I am only allowed to eat chicken fried steak when I am over 100 miles from home. What a difference four miles can make. Compounding my lust for deep fried yard bird on this particular morning was the dozen or so cocktails that I had accidentally consumed the night before, and the patent insensitivity of my companions, nearly all of whom ordered the c.f.s. just to piss me off. They may or may not have been blurry or spinning around in circles while enjoying my forbidden fruit; this is a point of contention among the group. The skillet that I ordered (repeat with sausage, gravy, etc.... I'm sure it was SOO much better for my health) was outstanding. The service was great, which is rather odd for a mountain cafe with a hippy vibe, and the prices are very reasonable. I'll be back, maybe even before they move four miles down the road.... But I don't have to be happy about it. P.S. the chicken fried steaks on my companion's plates were glorious. Like blue. read more

First time eating at the Mountain Lyon Cafe. Prices are reasonable, portions are large for breakfast- even my teenaged son couldn't finish his meal. Our server was very pleasant. Unfortunately the kitchen got my order wrong twice... I ordered the Mountain Lyon omelette, minus the onions. First time out it was a Denver omelette. Sent back to kitchen, no explanation for the mistake. Second time around, the omelette was the correct type (mushrooms, chorizo, tomatoes, cheese), but they had left the onions in. Our server actually said when she brought it, "... and if they left the onions in, they're gonna be in big trouble!" And of course there were tons of onions of multiple types: green, red, yellow. I was hungry and the rest of my food was getting cold, so I ate around them as best I could and didn't say anything this time to our server. Overall I was frustrated and disappointed. Would give just one star, except for the fact that the rest of our food was very tasty. Coffee was just so-so. read more

When I worked in the hills north of Silverthorne there was a must stop breakfast joint just north of the factory outlet stores. Great food, good people, and just the kind of way to start your day off right no matter what it is you're going to do (yep even work). Luckily now I stop in when I'm headed up to the hills for a little fun or relaxation. Hearty breakfasts from the griddle cakes, omelettes, egg bennies, chicken fried, (do try the home fries) to the sandwiches and specials at lunch time, nary a miss. They only do breakfast and lunch so be advised. This is a locals hangout, so go easy on a good thing. Think of it as a National Food-life Preserve kind of place that we want to keep around. (Their competitive BBQ at Frisco's Q contest was awesome. We took home three racks of bones to savor later. Kudos.). read more

Swiss Pancakes... wow! I'm not a huge pancake fan, but these were out of this world! Almond slices, fresh cut apple pieces baked right into the pancake with swiss cheese on top. My better half, had a skittle breakfast that an army could eat. All fresh ingredients and lots of coffee! Probably my new favorite place to eat breakfast at in Summit County. read more

Places like this make you hate yourself if you ever find yourself at Denny's. Why can't they replace every crappy Denny's in America with a Mountain Lyon Cafe? If I ever find myself looking over a plate of Moons Over My Hammy, I'm just going to think of happier times, when I found myself in Silverthorne with the wife, enjoying the awesome brunch, featuring the Green Chile gravy. Dirty water glass and a smock/torture kind of thing on the woman bussing tables got me grossed out from the start. A really nice waitress helped bring it back but the Reuben had too much dressing and the onion rings were bland so not enough to bring a decent rating. Might be a good spot if you're hungover and looking for the proverbial greasy spoon. read more

Wow- so much better than it appears! Deliciously spicy and fresh-tasting vegetarian black bean chili. Want to come back and try the fries and chips, which looked good on the passing plates. Okay..this place is amazing! Friends and I were getting off the Continental Divide Trail, and to be fair, we did have a little hiker hunger going on, but it was still incredible! Patty meIt, bacon cheeseburger, mushroom swiss burger, fries...YUM! Great burger joint! We enjoyed it so much, we went back the next morning for breakfast for a second helping. Came for 11am brunch with a party of 5 on a Monday morning (1/2/12). Though it was full we waited only 5 minutes and were promptly seated. It has the small town cafe vibe, a place where you know you'll get solid breakfast fare, nothing super fancy, but incredibly tasty. I had the Mountain Lyon omelet with home fries and a biscuit and found it delicious. My companions felt the same. My father-in-law got blackberry cobbler (w/ cream on top) to share and it was DELIGHTFUL. Can't go wrong here! read more
