Wanted to try this place because I love this style of food and Mr. Chopsticks was voted Best of Denton 2022. But in all honesty I am unsure how it won. My girl order the beef pho and it had 0 flavor, usually there's some spice to it or some Sriracha would come with it but it just tasted like water and noodles. I on the other hand order the volcano roll and it was ,in better words, horrendous. I know the volcano roll is just a California roll topped with spicy crab mayo, it's a sushi dish I order everywhere. But in this case it tasted like the California roll with just miracle whip thrown on top. Last but not least we tried to send the food back because we disliked it just to find out that they have a policy to where if the food is brought out to you, you have to pay for it. No matter what. A terrible policy to have for people who don't enjoy the food that was givin. read more

Absolutely terrible food. Ordered online. Orange chicken, spring rolls and vegetable tempura. Every thing was very, very bad. Orange chicken-Served in what looks like a frozen TV dinner tray. soggy chicken chunks swimming in an extremely watery sauce. Zero flavor or spice. None. Literally could not eat it. It was like soup with soggy breaded chicken chunks in it. So bad. Spring rolls- cold and completely flavorless. Literally spit it out. Had a distinct odd smell to them. Inedible. Vegetable tempura- very greasy and the vegetables inside the tempura were under cooked. Also inedible. Overall, unbelievably bad food. I brought my husband up here for a college nostalgia trip and specifically brought him to Mr Chopsticks and it's JUST as good as it was back then, if not better! Mr. Chopsticks was once a really good place to eat and meet. However, lately the quality went way down and the prices way up. Ordered spicy tuna roll sushi today and it tasted horrible. There was a funky aftertaste and no soy sauce in the world could have helped. The tuna looked and smelled funny, I asked the server if it was canned tuna, he said frozen for sure. No Mr Chopsticks you cant serve frozen (or canned fish) that will be eaten raw, not for $9.75! I can go to Krogers and get a can of tuns for $1.00. Place a pick up order. When I got home I found out I only had vegetables and no rice. Called the restaurant but it was just before they closed. All they said they could do is give me free rice on a future order. I don't know what good extra future rice is supposed to do for me. I now just have a dinner of sauce and vegetables. Mr Chopsticks in Denton was a decent Asian restaurant. The menu is pretty large and has cuisine from many countries. I think if the menu was a little more focused, maybe the flavors would be better. Mr Chopsticks has been around for a long time and I don't think things have changed. This used to be my favorite restaurant in Denton ~5 years ago and unfortunately it's not what it used to be. Service was alright but the orange tofu I ordered (which used to be my favorite item on the menu) had zero flavor. Tasted like it was cooked in water. It had been nearly two years since I had come to Mr. Chopsticks. Denton doesn't have much to offer in Chinese cuisine, decent Japanese and Thai, but the best Chinese that is offered is fast food. I honestly used to love this place. I've been eating here so long that I remember when they had delivery, didn't offer it and then started using delivery services. Service has always been hit or miss, so I usually ordered delivery when it was available. Eventually, with service sliding downhill, the food followed and after several truly terrible meals, I just stopped giving them any business at all. Recently, I saw some picture from a trusted fellow Yelper and decided to give them another try last month. I don't regret it, because it was better than my last three experiences had been and I am glad that I know that. I don't know why the sign says fine dining, it's not, and that's okay because that's how I like it. This is a seat yourself place and very casual. I was actually helped reasonably quickly and my server was pleasant. Off to a great start! Overall, the experience was A-OK, hence the 3 stars. On a side note, I know they can be better because I've had better from them for many years, so still waiting for that. I ordered the salmon nigiri for $5.25, the chicken tempura plate for $9.75 and 3 almond cookies for $1. I of course started with the almond cookie, this used to be my favorite thing about this place and something I missed a lot when I got fed up with their sliding quality. I am a strong believer in dessert before and after your meal anyway. This was dry and brittle instead of a buttery, soft and delicious. Bummer. Minus a star before we even start. Kidding... sorta. The nigiri was fine. It was average quality and tasted decent. The chicken tempura plate was something I ordered a lot, and it wasn't as good as it used to be, but ok. The veggies all had different cooks which was disappointing. The chicken was cooked fine, but a little bland. However, the portion was good for about 2 meals. My tea had a strange flavor, but I think they use some sort of mix. My server checked on me and offered me a to go container and a to go cup, which a lot of places neglect to do. Glad to see the service is good! Unfortunately, I wasted it by forgetting my left overs on the table, oh well. Honestly, I didn't feel my meal was worth $22 in terms of enjoyment, but perhaps it was close in terms of portion. Regardless, I was glad that they were turning things around. I can also see someone who never tried them before giving them a solid 3 or 4 stars off this one experience, due to the lack of options in the area. Went there for dinner last night and not, one, not two, but three servers saw us sitting at our table and no one bothered to come over and wait on us. After 15 minutes, we walked out. Mr. Chopsticks is as authentic Denton as one can get. It has been a staple in the community for decades. Although it's been around for years, the quality of its food and service have remained true. I have traveled and have never found Sesame Chicken that can touch Mr. Chopsticks'. It's just perfect. There is just the right amount of breading on the chicken, zucchini, carrots and okra. The light, soy sauce has just the right hint of flavor that leaves you begging for more. You have the options of white or brown steamed rice, fried rice or noodles. The fried rice is a unique twist and my fave. Did I mention this was the first place I tried Sriracha?? Before it was cool??? Before Sriracha was Sriracha??? That's how fantastic this place is! Try the Thai Basil with chicken and a fried egg on top...the egg makes the dish from phenomenal to out of this world! The Pad Thai is great with chicken, pork, tofu or beef. They don't make it with egg, which makes the flavors stand out more in my humble opinion. Their crab Rangoon is a long time fav with consistent crisp wonton skin and creamy, chunky crab/cream cheese filling. You can't go wrong with any of their appetizers. I noticed they recently changed their tempura breading, which wasn't my fav but you can't be perfect all the time, right??! Oh! I almost forgot! Their veggie options rock the roost! They have a great selection so you don't feel like the menu is only for carnivores! They have a nice beer, wine and sake selection. The sake flight (see pic) was killer good. Don't forget to check the special menu board...the wait staff forget to tell you the specials sometimes. So, if you make a trip to Denton you can't go wrong in stopping in at Mr. Chopsticks. I'm not understanding where the high ratings are coming from. I'm pretty sure the locals are just brainwashed by this places legacy. The tab was $56.00 and this is what we ordered: Fried soft shell crab Ichiban roll Mongolian beef Chicken pad Thai One Tsingtao beer The Ichiban roll was very good but not worth $13.75. The pad Thai was delicious and was by far my favorite thing there. The crab was divine but you only get 5 pieces for $7.00. Everything else was meh. Service I called in my order. The young man on the other end of the phone was courteous but (English as a first language) spoke very fast. Also, I was a little disappointed when I asked him whether they'd make a dish not listed on the menu - eggplant with garlic sauce. Without hesitation, he said "No.. I don't think so." Perhaps he answered me honestly, or he just didn't want to ask. Who knows? Still, this is my opportunity to say "No.. I don't think that's exactly top notch customer service." -- He was very polite at the pick-up window though. The Food The Hot & Sour Soup is good. Some tang and some heat. Perfect amount of white pepper (the true heat in traditional Chines-style hot & sour). The egg and tofu are there, but no pork strands. What's up with that? Still, I'd order it again. It's a good soup. Vegetable eggroll - Not bad, but not exactly outstanding. It's heavy with something sweet, and not exactly packed with cabbage. It's definitely institutional food. I'd probably not order this again. Pork Dumplings (steamed) - Consistency is good. Nice firm dumpling with good filling. Not well-seasoned, but nothing that a dip or two in some soy sauce can't fix. Sweeter than the average dumpling, but not bad. Hunan Beef -- First, this isn't a bad dish. But there are a couple of things worth noting. Number one: Mr. Chopsticks doesn't use traditional 'Hunan' sauce. This is very thin sauce. Not bad. But not what I expected. (I honestly feel like this is the hippy drive-thru guy's interpretation of Hunan sauce, and he smoked at least 3 joints before we arrived to pick up our order). Also, this place must've bought the Sam's Club-sized can of bamboo shoots, because there are enough in this dish to start a bamboo farm. Green onions too. Was there a sale on green onions at Sack & Save? I'd also like to introduce the cooks at Mr. Chopsticks to a commonly-known method known as 'velveting.' It makes for tender meat and it's easy to do (just check out my food blog -- it's in my profile). Bottom Line - Denton is a college town and, as expected, there are many social causes around here. First and foremost, get the damn tip jar away from the drive-thru window (see photo). I called in my order. You told me "No, I don't think so." Then I drove to your restaurant to pick up my order. And you deserve a tip because? Also, please shave if you are going to be serving me my food. We do not live in a third-world country and the drive-thru guy just struck me as dirty. Went there Monday evening (1/2). Food was great (as usual), but the service SUCKED. Not crowded, so we got a table right away. We were a party of 5, got 3 glasses of water, 15 minutes later took our drink order, then got 2 more glasses of water... 15 minutes later took food order... 10 minutes later got drinks, about 20 minutes later got food (we did get a couple of assurances that food was 'on the way'). My husband and I have ordered take out from Mr. Chopstix a few times over the past few years and were always happy with the food. However, we recently decided to go eat inside and I was disappointed. It was not very clean, unfortunately. The wall decorations were coated in dust, and the air vents were filthy. Black and coated in dirt and dust. Doesn't make you feel great about eating there. I've given Mr.Chopsticks the benefit of the doubt this past decade, but at a certain point it's inexcusable. Inconsistency in quality and service should not be the standard expectation for this place after a decade of experiences, but that's where we are. Sometimes the service or quality of food is good, but more often than not, one of these is severely lacking. Servers acting unprofessionally or ignoring you, to-go orders taking an hour long, food tasting different every time, etc. Even when it's good, the food is just OKAY for the most part. The food here is by no means authentic for those who are looking for that, but it's had its own place in my heart for some time. Their egg drop soup and chicken fried rice have been my go to for over a decade now. When it's good, it's good. Unfortunately both were really bad the last time I went. I prefer my food saltier than most, but more often than not their egg drop soup is too salty for the average consumer. I actually love their egg drop soup for this, but my last experience was salty to the point of inedible. This wasn't the level of salty that one might write off as "oh smoker cook" or purely preference. No-one in my party could handle it. I'm assuming they make these soups in a batch, which makes me believe they aren't tasting the food they make. If they are tasting it, that's even more concerning. On the opposite end, my last chicken fried rice was severely under-seasoned and the chicken tasted funky. It's frustrating because I'm often ordering my food to-go. It's a good 15+ minute drive away, so I can't just send it back to the kitchen when it's bad. In the past I would've advised finding one of the few dishes they do well and sticking to it. I would've suggested trying their chicken fried rice, egg drop soup, ginger chicken, stir fried green beans, chicken wings, etc, and I would've suggested avoiding their pho, lomein, sushi, etc. Now it's a gamble no matter what you get. Their inconsistency even in the good has been a recent change within the past few years (or at least with my experiences). While I've loved Mr.Chopsticks for so long and I still have friends/coworkers that suggest them for outings, I can't see myself gambling on their meals anymore. read more

Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese all at one place? You jest. No, it is true and apparently it works out pretty well. I had heard about Mr. Chopsticks quite some time ago but never knew where it was. It's not on a main street so you have to hunt for it. It is hidden by UNT and it is a good find. The constant flow of people give credibility to the place. As for the food, we had one Chinese and one Thai item and both were decent. I had pad see yoo and it was different from all the ones I have ever had at Thai restaurants. Not the best but not bad either. The noodles were good but not broad like I am accustom to and no egg like I normally see. The beef and the bok choi were tasty and the soy based sauce was sweet. The atmosphere was what you would expect near a college campus, a melding of Asian and college styles going on, wood floors and local artwork on the walls. Some of it from elementarty schools too. The prices were all reasonable (all under $10) and the plates were large with food. So, leftovers! It is a good place and I will be back to try other items and other cuisines. Enjoy. read more

This is a no-frills, long-standing restaurant appealing to college students...but that doesn't mean they don't have good food. The menu is quite varied, encompassing Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai dishes. I got the Tom kha soup, which was bobbing with mushrooms and heavy on the spice (especially as I reached the bottom of the bowl); the coconut milk flavor was practically an after taste. My friend enjoyed her pad Thai, a huge plate of noodles, veggies and tofu. Our youthful server was polite and on the ball; good job. This is a tale of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde as I have eaten at Mr. Chopsticks twice and the first time was 4 stars and the 2nd time was 1 star. I ordered egg rolls and they came out burnt smelling of old frying oil....I don't think they were burnt even though they were black I think they just needed to change the cooking oil. I ordered the hot and sour soup... the first time it was perfection...the second time I ordered the waiter forgot to order and he said he would remove it from the bill and I told him I wanted it, so he brought out some kind of watered-down soup that didn't resemble what I had the first time. I ordered the Kung pau beef with rice noodle stir fry dish. The first time was mouth-watering, but the second time it was lukewarm and when you moved the noodles....the noodles on top had sauce and the noodles below that level were white and bland....it was clear it had not been stir-fried. The first time was during lunch and the disgusting second time was during dinner...maybe when you dine matter...right now the second time was so nasty, I don't think I will give it a second chance. read more

Came for dinner. Walking in, it's seat yourself. A bit dated/dark on the inside but had patio option with a coue of tables... has drink deals under $5 where u get a Japanese beer and shot of sake. I've never left a bad review before because I'm just not that kind of person but I had to save someone from ordering from here. The Tom Kha Gai soup was so disgusting I actually spit it out. The broth tasted like it was made with dishwater (not an exaggeration) and I don't think there was any coconut milk or lime juice in it. The egg drop soup and sesame balls had no flavor whatsoever. The food was very mediocre if I'm being polite. Flavorless and low quality, but the prices are decent and you get a lot of food.

Dont get the schetzuan walnut stir fry. You cant go wrong with the price. I had the schetzuan walnut stir fry with pork. It was really missing something. Probably spice. Since it was the most bland schetzuan ive ever tried. Chicken or tofu wouldve probably been the best match for this dish, so my protein choice didn't do it any favors. I felt an entire green bell pepper added to the blandness, and made using a spoon difficult. Its was also off putting by how watery it was, and the walnuts didnt help with the blandness on top of everything else. I think the normal green beans for a schetzuan wouldve made things a little better. The very least, cut the bell peppers in half before slicing them. Thicken the sauce some, and add some heat. Schetzuan is supposed to be spicy. Instead of dumping walnuts from a bag on it, roast or pan sear them, or pair candied walnuts with a spicier version to give it some kick. The vegetable tempura was good, only complaint was instead of using carrots, i think sweet potatoes are the better offer. read more

Saw this had good reviews and decided to check it out. I was a little worried after we saw filthy windows and some disrepair as we approached. Went to sit on the patio and the general unkempt theme continued. Dead plants in hanging planters, spiderwebs in all the patio rails, sticky menus. Would have left, but I was starving! Too bad for the general malaise of the place, because the food is pretty good. Probably won't visit again. Unkempt front of the house really concerns me about what the kitchen looks like! read more
