One of the two pieces of fish in the fish and chips dinner
    Peter M.

Mr. Fish and Chips, is a very small and cozy, Mom and Pop eatery on Cochran, in Simi Valley. It is part of a strip mall and its location is really hidden from the main view. However, there is a steady stream of customers that come here to dine in or pick up. Of course, I came here for the fish and chips, even though they had fried chicken, oysters and other fare on the menu. After ordering and paying at the counter, I asked to use the restroom, which was only accessible through the kitchen section. On my return, I witnessed the lady (one of the owners, I presume), vigorously whipping up batter in a large cylindrical container. It explains why, when the fish pieces came out to me, they were crisp, non oily, not smothered and flavorful. The two fish pieces were rectangular (processed fish a ha), but surprisingly, the fish was flaky, moist and tasty. Actually, if it was shaped better, you would never have guessed it was not fresh. The French fries were also prepared to order so they came out hot and delicious. I am glad I stopped by. After all, we need to patronize small businesses, in and around our neighboring communities.

Pan Fried Cod Fillet w/ Fried Zucchini and Rice

Got the Pan Fried Cod Fillet w/ Fried Zucchini and Rice. 10/10 and love that the fillet is fried in egg. I've never had that before and thought it was fried egg until I bit into it and realized the fish is inside. The zucchini is tempura style and probably the best fried zucchini I've ever had. Can't wait to come back. Thank you!

Great lunch specials. It's like inflation hasn't hit this place yet.

For the price, I can't give this anything less than five stars. It's an Asian take on fish and chips which means they also have an Asian menu with things like dumplings and eggrolls, but they use the tempura style batter for the fish, which is quite an interesting fusion. From someone who has eaten fish and chips in England and Ireland, I have to say this is pretty top-notch and while the dipping sauces are probably the weakest point overall, a lunch special starting at $8.99 is few and far between to find in this economy. Give this place a chance. It's one lady running the whole show, taking your orders, making the food - so great way to support local business in the Simi area and have some delicious fish.

Super friendly service. The prices are reasonable. I got to say the cold slaw here is fabulous! The fish and calamari strips tasted pretty fresh. The fries were ok they tasted like they were cooked in old oil if that makes sense. We might be back when we are craving greasy food.

2 piece fish dinner for $10.99
    Vijay C.

Nice little small restaurant tucked away in simi valley right off the 118 freeway. I ordered the fish and chips dinner which came with 2 pieces of fish, fries, tartar sauce and coleslaw. The cost was $10.99 plus tax. Food was delicious, made fresh to order and the employees - I assume owners - were pleasant and welcoming.

    Inside looking out.

The restaurant is in a strip mall so lots of parking. A cute patio outside and a small cozy interior. They have a small bar with a few chairs so I opted to sit there and not take up a table. I had a beer and waited for my order. They food was ready fairly quickly. People were already starting to come in and the phone was ringing constantly, they seem to be busy. My order was ready quickly. The ravioli was my favorite dish. A creamy marinara with sun dried tomatoes, asparagus and basil. The sauce was outstanding. The chicken Parmesan was 2 good size breaded chicken breast topped with cheese and marinara. A side of spaghetti marinara was served with the chicken. The meatballs were maybe 3 oz each. Fork tender and had a great herbaceous flavor. The lasagna was rich in flavor and a hearty portion everyone loved the food. I think we have found our new go to for Italian food. Would love to comeback and try other dishes.

The cheesy run is super delicious. My only complain about the last time, my cocktail definitely felt water down and not strong enough. So I'd probably stick to wine, neat drinks or beer. Steakhouse Prices, Worse Than Cafeteria Food…read more Spider webs on the dining room lamps and food stains on our tablecloth were the first things I noticed during our first visit. Not exactly the first impression you'd expect from a steakhouse restaurant. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms appetizer. It arrived with plates but no silverware. We waited several minutes assuming our server would return with utensils, but she never did. We had to flag her down and ask for them. I also ordered a glass of wine that never arrived. The restaurant was slow, and by the time our entrées were served, I was still waiting. When we reminded our server, she just said "oh the wine yes!" She completely forgot! The food was even more disappointing than the service. The loaded mashed potatoes tasted extremely sour, no cheese, just shredded raw onions and sour cream with burnt top. How can you call this loaded baked potato? The mac and cheese was dry, bland, and lacked any real cheese flavor. Even the green beans had to a burnt pieces mixed in.None of the sides were at edible level. The steak was the only thing on my plate thats tolerable and even that left my stomach uncomfortable after my meal. The biggest disappointment was the food. For steakhouse prices, we were served loaded potatoes overwhelmed by raw onion, mac and cheese that tasted like cardboard, burnt green beans, and an average steak. The service and cleanliness issues only added to the frustration. We usually dine at Larsen's but decided to try support local businesses. After this experience, we'll be sticking with Larsen's. This will be our first and last visit.

This reservation took a full year to secure and I would gladly wait another year to experience it again. The hardest reservation in Ventura County? Without a doubt. Worth it? YES doesn't even begin to cover it. Dining at Sushi Tanaka is an experience in itself, especially in the presence of a legend like Chef Sei Tanaka. He is warm yet serious, focused yet playful and his dishes speak volumes. Every bite is layered with personality and skill. On the night we came in, my dearest friend Leslie and I had the entire restaurant to ourselves. I can't explain how we had an entire seating to just us but it was magical and intimate. We dinned on 18 courses, each one a surprise more delicious than the last. You just sit back and the chef chooses each bite for you. We've never had octopus so impossibly tender it melted in our mouths. Ice cold sake, warm fish soup, literally I could go on and on about this meal. Choosing favorites feels almost wrong because every course was exceptional, but if forced, the Santa Barbara uni on wagyu, Japanese scallop, Sea bream, and Toro with uni were some of the most impressive and unforgettable bites I've ever had. Never did I imagine that the best sushi I've ever experienced in Ventura County would be found in Simi Valley, but here we are. What an absolute treasure this city holds. I truly hope everyone gets the opportunity to support and experience this extraordinary omakase at least once in their life.

The other night we checked in for our reservation & the hostess proceeded to take us to our table. She initially took us to a table set for 6, meanwhile we were a party of 7, so she motioned for us to sit at the next table, which was set for 7 people. Upon walking to our table & pulling out our chairs, a man in a suit, who I presume was the manager, asked if we had been helped. He completely caught us off guard because we hadn't even sat down yet. I answered him yes, & then he proceeded to tell me that usually someone from the front would walk us to our table (as if we had just walked into the restaurant & sat ourselves). What?! I responded & told him the host did. In actuality, she walked us to the vicinity of our table, not right up to our table, but that's a discussion for him to have with the hostess. Being we were customers & this was a nicer restaurant in comparison to a more casual or fast food place, the way in which the manager confronted us & handled the situation was completely unprofessional. Anyways, the rest of our party soon joined us & after ordering drinks & a couple of appetizers, we ordered our food. Well, out of the 3 medium well steaks we ordered, all 3 were brought to us rare (red & much more raw inside than we prefer, or ordered). We sent all 3 back & when they came back, they were better, but still not medium well). This is surprising because being Larsen's is a steakhouse, I would think the cooks would be able to gauge the temperatures more accurately. Needless to say, the seasoning they use gives their steaks a delicious flavor, so we did enjoy that. Another issue we encountered was our waiter, although very nice, took the initiative of charging our party for extra kids chicken tenders, simply because our friends' daughters were sharing them & had asked for an extra plate. While that was a kind gesture, he should have asked their parents if they would like extra tenders, not just do it & then charge us. Also, my friend's husband ordered 2 sides with his prime rib, thinking it came with 2 sides. When the bill came it reflected the $10 additional side, so he asked the waiter about how it, to which the waiter responded that the menu clearly states that it only comes with one side. I understand that & our friend's husband clearly didn't see that (nor did we pay attention when he ordered it, we were talking), but typically in cases like this, the waiter would let the person know that they would be happy to accommodate their request, but that the extra side will be an additional charge. After being at the restaurant for over 2 hours between the slow service, issues with our steaks, & discrepancies over the additional charges (which the waiter did take care of), we left a little less than satisfied with the restaurant, & the waiter was clearly not happy with us. Although the waiter took care of everything, not once did the manager come back to our table to apologize or ask how everything was. Usually when there's an issue, the manager will stop by the table to check in. I don't know that we'll be returning to this location.
